I get what you're saying but the problem I have with it is that one of my dogs is reactive and does not usually like other dogs. When I want to walk my dog in my neighborhood and someone else's is not leashed, they will try and run up to say hi. This freaks my dog out and he will start a fight. Then the "friendly" dog wants to fight back. All I want to do is walk my dog and I should be able to without worrying about others.

My golden retriever did this to a neighbor when I was a kid. He got out the front door though. Was a complete accident and totally unexpected. We brought him in to get him cleaned up and it was a clean puncture. Dogs can be unpredictable especially when they feel they are protecting their space

I love that the boy’s dog isn’t even being aggressive. 100% defensive. When the other dog isn’t directly attacking the boy, his dog is basically just checking to make sure he’s safe and only goes for the other dog when he has to. The best, most bravest pup I’ve seen.

The approaching dog didn’t look aggressive to me, I think he saw play-time and wanted to join in. The owners tone was contrary to that though, unless he was just worried about the kid getting knocked down. Anyway, I think that’s why the kids bodyguards were so chill.

The idiot side of that equation is that my, leashed, dog might. So if you can’t keep it away from mine all bets are off.
I have a normally ridiculously sweet Shepard mix but she has a protective streak common in the breed. 9 out of 10 dogs she’s fine meeting on a leash. That tenth though is a problem. No rhyme or reason to it that we’ve been able to figure out yet. But the number of times I have to tell some jackass to keep their off-leash dog away for their dogs safety, not mine is annoying.

Once saw a small dog go up and growl at a well-behaved leashed dog, and the idiot owner said to "oh, he just growls, he doesn't bite". Owner of the leashed GSD just said "yeah, well, mine does. My dog is the sweetest little guy I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning, but he’s also a goon that is not great with other dogs and will accidentally knock little kids over because he isn’t around them often. I don’t know how people have a snarling hellhound and just go “Eh, he’s fine off-leash.”

Yeah it's not a judgement of the dog, they have ancient instincts to join in hunts and if the other dog doesn't recognize the child it may think it's the target. Really fine line instinct to "trust" a dog with, this is why large dogs should always be leashed in suburb or city settings even if 99% of the time they are good, it's for their own good so you don't have your dog put down because the 1% scenario occurred.
Based on this I would say both people should have had their dogs leashed

If you look at the angle of approach it was originally going a bit wide; then afterwards it immediately retreats and looks like it even goes into a play posture (“play bow”) to indicate its intention.
I think it was just a mix up where the incoming dog wanted to play and the protecting dog thought it was a threat. Once the mix up is cleared up the other dog gives wide berth and the protecting dog backs off when it realizes there wasn’t a threat.
My opinion is that both dogs are good boys and the biggest issue is not having them leashed, doubly so for the incoming dog assuming the other two are at their own home. Still not great to have them off leash, but also given that the incoming dog was the one to instigate (even playfully) while to other two didn’t chase after it left then I give more leeway to the homeowner having their dogs off leash on their own property

That is correct and my point is that's how the shepherd reacted. He was establishing the rules and you see it all the time at dog parks. Playtime needs rules too. No one would be wrong by not trusting an unknown animal so I'm not suggesting that. The shepherds reaction was one to be proud of. It was a well socialized reaction and no damage was done.

I came across a German shepherd that had escaped his yard and was out front barking at people. I approached him with my dog to get him away from the street and keep him from getting hit by a car. It was pretty nerve wracking because the shepherd could have taken me and my dog out if it wanted to. I told the dog to go home and it backed up towards a gate. I wasn’t about to corner that guy as he was huge. I randomly asked him, in an accusing, parental tone, “did you get out of your yard?” And the dog’s demeanor immediately changed. He looked so guilty, put his tail between his legs and basically said, “help me get back in or I’m screwed when my human gets home.” That dog let me open his gate and let him back in. Meanwhile, his idiot sister still in the backyard was just wagging and wanting to come out and play. Strangely, when the dog became docile I trusted him completely. They are so smart they seem like they are rational and not prone to just changing their demeanor. My dog noped and sat on the sidewalk while I opened the gate.

My parents had a neighbor who had German shepherds that they didn't train or interact with at all. It was honestly sad to see. But one of the younger ones was very fence reactive, and jumped the fence into my parents' yard more than once. One time, it was after I'd brought my own dog into the yard. The German shepherd jumped the fence, came charging at my dog. There was about five seconds of barking and growling and then, thankfully, my dumbass mutt dog got bored and literally just walked away and started sniffing something lol. The shepherd immediately backed off, then, too.
We did file a complaint with the city after that. My mom is like 90 lbs and has a disability, and it wasn't fair for there to be reactive dogs back there who could jump the fence when she was just out gardening, and potentially put her in harm's way. There's no way she could defend herself. But then the people just kept their dogs inside all the time. It was really heartbreaking, because the situation wasn't the dogs' faults. They could have been incredible dogs if someone had just taken the time to train them.

My neighbor used to have a dog who would resource-guard bark at me through the fence….right up until I scolded him about his bad language and rude manners and did your momma teach your it was okay to talk like that.
Bless his heart, all that bravado disappeared and the dog looked so embarrassed. He would occasionally talk trash around me after that, and a quick “language!” was usually enough to stop it.

I've had two German Shepherd dogs in the past and they're crazy smart. They learn things without trying to teach them. With one words like squirrel, racoon, and possum needed to be dropped from speech and replaced by a euphemism, because she just learned them on her own and would go racing to the back door to look for the animal that was in her yard, and then she learned the replacement words.

I adopted a dog thinking it was a sheprador (German Shepherd/ Lab mix) because I love labs. I did one of those dog DNA tests on it, and discovered that she is in fact 50% German shepherd, with a few other breeds mixed in. No lab though. All of that to say that I have been in awe over how damn smart this dog is. I have a new appreciation for German shepherds now that I’ve owned one.

Eh I know you are just soaking in the moment, but thats generally not true. GSD's are great for training and are extremely hyper focused on accomplishing tasks given to them by those they trust. They are amazing animals and many are certainly smart as dogs go.
But, they arent generally the smartest. LGD's tend to be way more independent but capable problem solvers where a GSD will turn to their owner to problem solve. And based off most "cognition" studies, poodles generally come out on top.
special caveat: dogs are not universal to breed, and vary greatly from dog to dog even within the various breeds.

A couple years ago a WI case of an older man getting bit by two dogs while walking and then shooting them till they died was decided to be personal defence. So now it stands an off leash dog like that who moves onto public space (or not private property of the owner) can be killed if aggressive with no repercussions. If you love your dogs, leash them up.

It's about having your dogs in your control. Some states might have different regulations. If they are on your property, trained and obedient, leashes aren't required. But if you have uncontrollable dogs and they take off, leave the property and harm someone? Then you're in the wrong because the dog wasn't under your control.

Anyone thinking they have a large dog "under control" 100% of the time is delusional. It only takes one time, one trigger event. We all think we know our dogs, but even the goodest boys might interpret something as something else. And most people don't train their dog beyond commands that respond to food. Actual dog training is done by a professional over a few weeks, and it ain't cheap, so most people don't do it.

Yup. It is legal where I am to have your dogs unleashed on your property, as long as they stay on your property and they are completely under your control.
Often I’ll sit on the porch with my shepherd and we’ll watch the world go by or storms rolls in. It’s really nice.

The problem is you cannot know a dog that isn't your own. Sure maybe a dog stays in its unfenced yard off leash.. until a stranger runs by, or a child, cat, or a rabbit. At the end of the day a dog is still an animal and can be unpredictable or triggered by something external. I've been bitten as a kid by a supposedly perfectly sweet dog that I had even interacted with before, but she still came running across the yard to bite me that day.

I have a very old and anti-social husky. I make it a point to get off the sidewalk and onto the curb it even cross the street when I see other dogs. Unfortunately, one time a guy comes around the corner as I'm approaching it, he has his stupid 70 lb Labradoodle on a retractable leash, fully extended.
I'm walking off the curb, putting myself between my dog and his stupid self and his hyperactive dog. He continues to let his dog approach me. "He's not a problem." Is all he says.
I just don't get some people. All my body language is screaming, "leave me alone and get away from me" and he still thinks I want any sort of interaction.

Not a German shepherd.. this is a mix breed..
And the black dog wasn't focused on the kid, but on the dog.. kid was just in-between..
But both owners suck to have their dog unleashed in their neighborhood

I'm leaning towards this too because the dog didn't seem in aggressive mode. I do think the dog was running at the kid first though, I think the idea was to play because it was wagging it's tail and the Shepard seemed to only go defensive when the kid panicked. The dog ran away when the Shepard shut him down but was wagging it's tail until the owner scolded it. You can never really tell though because some dogs will attack especially kids even in "play mode" with no aggression signs.

I am not sure what's truly going on in that video, but it is important to know that tail qagging does not mean friendliness. It means excitement. A dog can be excited about ripping your throat out.

My county has a leash law just for this type of situation yet many dog owners still think their untrained mutts won't attack anyone and don't use a leash.

I‘m not fully convinced the dog was about to go after the boy. Rather unlikely and the video only focuses around the boy and you can‘t really see the dogs in the crucial moments. However, when they get close the incoming dog doesn‘t care about the boy. And for me it seems likely that he was out there to play along or surpress the play of the dogs.
In any case, agree that nobody in that video had control over their dogs and they just did what dogs do.

There is a video with the full view, this one's been cropped down. In the full video, you can see the charging dog come from it's own (fenced) yard as soon as it sees the boy and other dogs running into the yard. It definitely looks like the one dog just wanted to play but came in too hot so the other dog stepped in. As you said just dogs doing what dogs do

Holy hell. I've seen this video a few times over the years and always thought, "What a good dog." But watching it again, it goes so far beyond that! This dog did just exactly what was needed and nothing more. He stepped in between the boy and the aggressor. Once the aggressor ran off, he did not chase him. He kept his eye on the boy and shifted to sentry mode once mom picked the kid up. Didn't engage more than needed, stayed close to the boy at all times, did not escalate, did not run after the aggressor. This is a top notch dog!
