They did the same things to us Aussies too. It was headlines about 3 months ago here.

there was pressure on Pharmac here also ( new zealand)

u/deep8787 2h ago

I hope you guys replied appropriately :D

u/SeengignPaipes 2h ago

Well it either went one of two ways, either my government bent over and got the shaft from the US like always or we told them to go take a long jump off a short pier.

u/deep8787 2h ago

Tbh, I was hoping more for something along the lines of "fuck off you cunt" lol

u/webdog77 2h ago

I’m not sure that they said that, but could you imagine the community backlash if our medicines all of sudden jumped significantly because the Orange Pedo said we had to…

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad8032 58m ago

I think these American companies don't realize that populations of countries with options, aren't cucked like Americans.

u/webdog77 54m ago

Yeah it must piss them off to be putting pressure on the Orange one to do something about it.

Imagine being mad that people can afford medicine without going bankrupt. Capitalism really needs to chill.

u/Fear023 2h ago

Worst part is that US companies are pulling fucking cancer drugs (complete exit from our market) because they don't want to sell it at a cheap price anymore. Despite selling it and making money for decades.

u/relevantwishofverse 1h ago

Just ignore their patents. Let American companies exploit their own apathetic populace. It would be beyond stupid and treasonous for any country to hurt the healthcare of their citizens so American terrorists can have even more money.

Agreeing to their demands just means they'll be back repeatedly to keep increasing the prices since profits are more important than society to these mentally ill sociopaths that can never have enough.

u/ghigoli 1h ago

honestly do it. just remake the patents in your country and sell them to American markets. they wanna fuck around and find out? let them.

u/JimboTCB 1h ago

u/dirtydigs74 5m ago

It's not over by any means. He's put a 100% tariff on Australian pharmaceuticals. The issue is that the government negotiates a price with drug companies directly. If they lower the price sufficiently, it goes on the PBS, and is subsidized by the tax payer, for the tax payer. If the price can't be negotiated low enough, it can still be sold here, it just won't go on the PBS.

Apparently, the drug companies aren't making enough from the drugs that go on the PBS to trickle it down to US citizens. Supposedly, they would pass on the extra profits to the US domestic market by lowering their prices in the US. And if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Well most countries negotiate prices with Pharma companies, guess which country doesnt? The US. Trump would have no problem with an American Pharma company ripping off Americans.

If Trump is so passionate about pharma prices, then change the law and make them more affordable for Americans? Do what literally the rest of the world does? Just some food for thought Donald. If you actually care about all of this.

u/JimboTCB 1h ago

Look, universal healthcare is a complicated system which only every single developed country in the world except for America has solved. That's your good old American exceptionalism at work.

Americans are not capitalist. Capitalism isn’t using the money from your citizens to bail out every rich person who messes up at capitalism so much that it’s actually a viable strategy to tank businesses to get bailed out. And all it cost is bribing some politicians. We’re a socialist country for the rich. We can’t claim to be capitalist when the concept of making a better product doesn’t mean forcing the competition to adapt, it just means the competition pays enough to crush the competition of the owners let it die and make out with a golden parachute that then they use to buy into the new one.

u/Ok-Chef1896 2h ago edited 2h ago

Capitalism isn’t using the money from your citizens to bail out every rich person who messes up at capitalism so much that it’s actually a viable strategy to tank businesses to get bailed out.

That is the end stage of capitalism.

Capital has political power, over time the capital get accumulated, the capitalist have more and more influence over the state which leads to faster capital accumulation etc..

Monopolies are natural outcome as well. In a competition someone has to win, winner gets to grow, which sets the winner in a better position to compete in the future/buy out the competition.

And then we have the hyperscalers. You just throw the money at the problem, run the bussnies unprofitable for years to drive out the competition and once your monopoly/duopoly/oligopoly position is secured you strat jacking up prices and essentially transforming bussnies into a rentier model where you just extract the surplus value from consumers.

We’re a socialist country for the rich.

Yup. That's capitalism alright.

We can’t claim to be capitalist when the concept of making a better product doesn’t mean forcing the competition to adapt, it just means the competition pays enough to crush the competition of the owners let it die and make out with a golden parachute that then they use to buy into the new one.

Economic systems don't exist in a vacuum.

u/rintzscar 2h ago

None of what you wrote is true. The person you're replying to is correct and you have a very rudimentary understanding of economic systems.

u/Ok-Chef1896 2h ago

It's not true that capital has political power? How exactly?

It's not true that the natural outcome of market competition are monopolies? How exactly?

It's not true that Socialism for the rich is capitalism because the rich are the ones who control the politics in capitalist society? How is that not true?

None of what you wrote is true. The person you're replying to is correct and you have a very rudimentary understanding of economic systems.

I can play the same game.

None go what you wrote is true. The person you're replying to is correct and you have a very rudimentary understanding of economic systems!!

u/rintzscar 2h ago

Yes, none of that is true. Again, your understanding of capitalism is rudimentary and deeply flawed. I suggest you read more.

u/Ok-Chef1896 2h ago

Yes, none of that is true.

You didn't provide any explanation why.

Again, your understanding of capitalism is rudimentary and deeply flawed.

You didn't explain why?

  I suggest you read more

I have read Herbert Spencer, John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Adam Smith, William Stanley Jevons, David Ricardo, Carl Menger, Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman, Keynes...

What else do you suggest for me to read? :)

I suggest for you to educate yourself more, clearly you have no substantial opinion aside from defending a death cult that is capitalism.

u/Jealous_Response_492 1h ago

He doesn't have to. The system you are describing is not a free market capitalist system, and neither is the USA.

Adam Smith wrote against the notion of monopolies and rent seeking behaviour as anti capitalist behaviour, behaviour incompatible with capitalism.

Indeed the idea of bailing out share holder ultimately is also anything but capitalism, it may be where much of western economies are post 2008, but where ever this is, it is not Free Market Capitalism.

u/ArcticWolf_0xFF 1h ago

I think you two are talking two completely different things here and are both right within your topics. You are talking about ideal capitalism, which exists or can exist as much as ideal communism. It just doesn't.

But most "capitalists" are not dogmatic for the cause but are just greedy and try to grab what they can and give nothing back. These don't care if monopolies and buying political influence are anti capitalistic as long as it suits them.

Those have to be kept in check by political power to keep capitalism from imploding. But these checks diminish due to them buying more political influence.

And that is what he's talking about: The inevitability of real-world capitalism destroying itself if you let single entities become really successful.

u/Ok-Chef1896 1h ago

And that is what he's talking about: The inevitability of real-world capitalism destroying itself if you let single entities become really successful.

You are correct.

It's funny in a way how capitalism can be so efficient at a times (in commodity production, increasing the productivity over time..), but yet it just can't save it from itself.

Hm.. Some might say that we need to do some seizing of certain means of production...

u/Ok-Chef1896 1h ago

And how exactly does "free market capitalism" prevent monopolies?

Even Adam Smith argued that markets do not work on their own without "morals", something needs to control them externally, be it the state or "morals", to prevent the forming of monopolies/oligopolies.

And what were the states trying to do in 1920s? To break up the monopolies.

What is the problem with that? Well capitalism does not exist in a vacuum detached from politics.

Capital has political power and as capital accumulates so does it's political power.

The end result is capital taking over the state (which is supposed to regulate the markets) and making rules that favor it.

After all, the capitalism is about the profit motive, not the free markets, and how do you maximize your profit? By monopolizing your position in the market and increasing the efficiency via vertical integration.

Markets can exists, and did exist, in other economic systems.

You have to be next level naive to think that capitalism promotes free markets and prevents regulatory capture.
It’s not a flaw, it’s a feature.

u/Jealous_Response_492 1h ago

What you describe as a feature of free market capitalism is actually anti free market capitalism. Just because the proponents of it claim to be pro free market capitalism, doesn't make it so. The Nazi's weren't Socialists either, despite claiming to be.

u/emp_forced_reform 1h ago

Regulated capitalism will allow this. Unregulated capitalism allows capitalists to collude, and appear to increase profits by not reinvesting into R&D.

u/mymar101 4h ago

What exactly can the US do? Germany will just say fuck off.

u/n3m0sum 1h ago

It's all political theater.

The theory is that non US pharma companies make drugs so cheap, that they don't "pay their fair share of research and innovation". So apparently Americans have to pay high prices, to cover the cost of American research that the world benefits from.

Nothing to do with the US insurance model bloating the cost of everything.

So countries like Germany need to increase prices, or Trump will tariff them... Making Americans pay more for cheaper German drugs, as well as American drugs!

It's almost like he didn't think this through at all. Or tariffs are his favourite toy.

All because they don’t want people to see how cheap medication can be

u/Sad-Base-8689 3h ago

Which is funny because US citizens are traveling to other countries to make use of that countries healthcare system and cheaper medicines. Yet instead of rethinking how their own healthcare system works they wanna bring down everyone elses

It can be a fair proposition to ask a fully developed nation to invest more into pharmaceutical research.

Making the drugs once they are tested is the cheap part. Ensuring the drugs do what they are supposed to and don’t cause long term effects is extremely expensive.

The US spends about half of global spending on drug research, out spending all of Europe per

→ More replies (8)

u/boatenvy 2h ago edited 2h ago

Pharma companies make well and truly enough profits to cover R&D. What we're talking about here is profit margins not adequate R&D budgets. The reason the numbers look like the US spends nearly 50% of the annual worldwide R&D spend is because many of the largest pharma companies are US headquartered (Eli Lilly, J&J, Merck, Pfizer). It's not as simple as "the US is paying for R&D for the world".. although that argument "sells" well when playing the victim. The simple fact is the reason pharma charge US residents more for drugs than is reasonable is because they can get away with doing so. One of the two big pharma companies I worked for (implementing finance systems internationally) sold as much in gross sales (in dollars, not volume) in the USA as they did in every other country in the world combined... that's simply due to margin.

u/Damage_Physical 4h ago

Neighbour article there https://efpia.eu/publications/data-center/the-pharma-industry-in-figures-economy/geographical-breakdown-of-sales-of-new-medicines/

u/Tricky_Big_8774 4h ago

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (5)

u/joshak 2h ago

Why? The cost of research is baked into the cost of the drugs. The cost that those nations pay is negotiated with the pharmaceutical companies. No one is forcing them to sell their drugs to those nations.

u/moakim 1h ago

Pharma companies are known to inflate R&D costs in order to charge exorbitant prices, even when R&D is already financed by public funding.
An example, the currently highest-selling drug:

Testifying before the US Senate health committee in February 2024, MSD’s chairman and chief executive said his company had invested $30 billion in its Keytruda research programme since 2011. This figure cannot be verified, as companies are under no obligation to publish or account for R&D costs on a product-by-product basis.
[...]
Our estimate of Keytruda’s research and development costs stands at $1.925 billion (CHF 1.52 billion) – equivalent to just 1.2% of the drug’s global sales to date. This is far below the figure cited by MSD’s chief executive. Even when potential failures are taken into account, the total cost of Keytruda’s research and development ($4.79 billion, around CHF 3.8 billion) represents barely 3% of the medicine’s turnover.

Give the article a read, it's quite revealing.

Oh, don't worry. The stupid part of Germany elected a Blackrock manager last year that everyone with a little critical thinking skills warned about and he's now doing exactly that.

u/Icy_Association_2331 3h ago

This is a bit misleading.

The US develops drugs, which is very expensive, and then expects other countries to purchase these drugs to offset the cost that was incurred to develop them in the first place.

It’s never been expensive to produce drugs once they’ve been developed. So whenever other countries choose to provide cheap generics without contributing to the development, it’s unfair.

Pharmaceuticals should be cheap, but they’re not, and without the US, the rest of the world would be spending way way wayyyy more on their own drugs. The US subsidizes the rest of the world quite significantly.

u/TheS4ndm4n 2h ago

There's patents on drugs so the manufacturer can recoop the research cost.

Those patents eventually expire, to avoid patent trolls blocking life-saving medication.

Many manufacturers stop production as soon as the patent expires. And introduce a slightly changed (improved or not) version and get a brand new patent. This is why even very old drugs are expensive in the US.

Other countries produce the old medicine from the expired patent. And they negotiate much lower prices for the patented stuff, because they have universal Healthcare and that gives them power over big pharma.

u/teddyslayerza 3h ago
  1. US biotech does most drug innovation, not the pharmaceutical industry.
  2. This means the US only has high drug prices and not consistently high prices for things like bandages and care, right?

I broke my elbow pretty bad this year. Required 2 screws and ligament repair. I was out of work for 3 months, had to do physical therapy and such to get the arm good again. Total cost from my pocket, 0€. For half the time I was out I received 100% pay, the other half 80%.

The reason my elbow broke so bad from a simple fall in the street? Because when I damaged the elbow in America, the cost to get it taken care of was prohibitive. If I had gotten it treated, it would have been stable enough to not dislocate while trying to brace my fall.

I actually had problems because of this. They're getting so low that other countries get supplied first. This is usually fine, but delays in my insulin supply are problematic.

u/BoY_Butt 2h ago

When a government wants to force prices, it has absolutely nothing to do with capitalism

u/Xtra_Veg-90 2h ago

Don't worry, the AFD will fix that just as soon as they start mass deportations.

u/BeeApprehensive2503 2h ago

It is affordable via large deductions of wages. Minimum wage workers end up with 40% deductions via taxes + social security.

u/Halfbloodnomad 2h ago

I mean if the AFD wins the majority in the next few years they probably will bring big Pharma.

Cheap medicine making other markets look expensive is the whole complaint

u/kitfoxtrot 2h ago

My guess is it's an attempt to say share more of the burden of innovation costs? Especially if your country has the brain power and industry for (not saying this is a reasonable ask, no idea on the specifics). But I mean...if they're doing cool stuff to reduce cost in an innovative way or reducing overall cost just by production that's pretty awesome and helpful too. Idk maybe other companies see it as eating at their share and in turn availability to spend on research?

US isn't even #1 for new patents though, granted # of patents doesn't correlate to truly innovative/pushing medicine foward ex) cancer drug vs another allergy pill. That'd require looking a bit deeper. But still thought this map is pretty interesting- UK/Switzerland seem to be crushing it.

u/AnyEye8798 2h ago

This is the complete opposite of capitalism but Ok.

u/Jumpy_Ad8465 2h ago

yeah, how about noooo....

u/Andyseawolf 2h ago

We in Germany have cheaper healthcare. We get six weeks of paid holiday a year. A lot of the German motorways do not have a speed limit so freedom on the road. We can drink a beer in public without putting a paper bag on the bottle. We don’t have flock cameras everywhere. We also have more healthy food and drinks. Cheers 🥳😎

u/BigTechnology4369 2h ago

Make your prices higher or we’ll make you hurt more.

Not a good sentiment to threaten(?) an Allie with, but that’s just mho

u/gokkai 2h ago

Germany has very costly healthcare insurance, it comes down to around ~1K euros/month if you are making more than 50K euros/year.

So no.

u/Chemical-Idea-1294 1h ago

But at least includes spouse and children for free and no co-pay.

US wants Germany to do more research while cutting funding for research themselves.

*Non-welfare capitalism

u/Jan1270 1h ago

Merz with CDU and SPD are now exactly doing this. They destabilize the healthcare sector and raise the prices for everything.

u/Chemical-Idea-1294 1h ago

The health insurances negiotiate the prices with the pharma industry.

So supply and demand at work.

We don't like communist-like price fixing forced by the state, demanded by Trump.

u/KorolEz 1h ago

Sacrificing the private health care industry to have an overall stronger economy by having a healthier work force should be a no brainer, even for capitalists

u/AhrisBigBootyBoil 1h ago

You're just paying with waiting for fucking ages

u/Sooperooser 1h ago

It's literally like PharmaKom from the movie Johnny Mnemonic.

u/Shot-Shelter-2339 1h ago

Murica really is a Satans shithole

u/cr0ft 1h ago

I mean, this is nuts, but it's also just capitalism.

Capitalism is quite literally driving the extinction of the human species due to the warped, sickening incentives in any competition based social system.

America is just the most fucked up example.

u/LaserGadgets 1h ago

Nobody in germany gives a flying fuck on your investigation.

u/strange_is_life 1h ago

As a German. Our healthcare is neither affordable nor accessible. I am paying more than 700€ for healthcare a month and don‘t get any doctors appointment in less than 3 months.

u/Joklan-sama 1h ago

Fuck them off! I got diagnosed with prostatitis and I am so glad that the antibiotics on receipt only costed me 4€. They want us to be indebted for medication and to overdiagnose when possible to keep us reliant on it. The subsidies on pharmaceutics are nonnegotiable.

u/IndividualWeird6001 1h ago

I have thus new pill for the US market, its 100% biological. Dont worry that its brown creamy and smells like shit. I am sure thats nothing!

u/Kayne-C-Hampton 1h ago

In the not too distant future the US will be the main movie villain.

NYARA MENTIONED!!!

u/vSTekk 1h ago

Thats not capitalism but unhinged US lobbyism (eg big pharma having too much influence on your politicians)

u/Revayan 1h ago

Germany is among the most expensive in europe when it comes to medicine lmao

u/PavlovsDog6 1h ago

Free market? Never heard of it.

u/Gysburne 1h ago

Healthy people are the most productive workers.
Healthcare should be free everywhere.

u/TwoToxic 1h ago

The only proper response to that would be "Fuck off" but I doubt German politicians have the guts.

u/YakEarly3819 54m ago

i think america can fuck their self .... fuck the rich

u/ImperiousCretin 53m ago

Every time I see The USA on a headline I know it will be something abhorrent or stupid. Or both.
