This has bugged me for years, and I have maybe had too much caffeine today but c’mon. I’d be genuinely interested to know what luminance setting these are set to at night time. They distract from a cultural landmark.

One of my biggest concerns at the moment is the practical side of relocating — especially accommodation when I first arrive. I’ve seen some jobs and agencies offering relocation assistance, temporary accommodation, flights or other incentives, but it seems to vary massively. I’ve also heard mixed reviews about working for agencies🙈

Hi everyone just wondering if anyone else in the leafy pockets like Ashgrove, Paddington, or Holland Park has noticed how a butcher's job on a big shade tree completely wrecks a home's street appeal? My partner and I are prepping our place for market, and our agent basically begged us not to do an aggressive hack-back on our Jacaranda, claiming buyers in these character suburbs actually pay a premium for a lush, established canopy and that brutal lopping just makes the yard look scalped and ugly. I get that you need to keep branches off the tin roof and out of the gutters, but surely a proper selective prune looks a million times better to potential buyers than turning a gorgeous tree into a bunch of sad, naked stumps, has anyone here actually seen severe lopping knock dollars off an auction result, or do most buyers just care that the yard gets more sunlight?

Brisbane pubs set to rise to 12 storeys under new council plan.

Pubs in 7 Bris suburbs could soon rise to 12 storeys to help unlock hundreds of new hotel rooms across the city before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Brisbane pubs could soon be allowed to grow to 12 storeys to save the city from a hotel room drought under a council plan to slash red tape, relax parking rules and speed up development approvals.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is fast-tracking a Suburban Pub Stays Strategy by introducing a Temporary Local Planning Instrument to combat a crippling 90% drop in hotel construction between 2019- 2024, at the same time costs rose by around 40%. Pubs in the city's major centres — Nundah, Toombul, Mitchelton, Toowong, Indooroopilly, Wynnum and Carindale — will have proposed height limits raised from 10-12 storeys, while more suburban locations could see pub approvals reach up to 6 storeys.

Schrinner said not everyone wants to stay in the inner-city when they come to Brisbane and the ideal place to add more accommodation was on pub sites with a lot of excess space. 'More pub stays in our suburbs will add more choice to Brisbane's accommodation market and mean visitors will be able to stay closer to their family and friends while they're here. It also means more customers for suburban cafes, restaurants and shops and more jobs closer to home'.

Regatta Hotel in Toowong, one of the 7 suburbs that'd be impacted. Brisbane City Council found more than 60 Brisbane pubs sit on large sites, but just 15 offer accommodation.

BCC believe if just 20 suitable pubs added accommodation, it'd create hundreds of hotel rooms across Brisbane could be unlocked. Ross Elliott from Suburban Futures said several suburban pubs had already demonstrated the potential for short-term accommodation, including The Brook, The Glen at Eight Mile Plains and The Calamvale Hotel.

'Many suburban pubs have changed very little since the introduction of drive-through bottle shops decades ago and are well placed to evolve again. Many of these pubs occupy large sites with extensive car parks, creating an opportunity to make better use of the land while introducing new accommodation and facilities for their local communities'.

Public feedback guiding the proposed changes for hotels across the city included simplifying development applications for accommodation to speed up approvals, allowing extra heights across multiple zone categories, changes to carparking requirements to reduce costs and allowing eligible short-term accommodation projects to defer infrastructure charges rather than paying them upfront.

Property industry leaders have welcomed the progression of the council's pub strategy as a weapon to tackle a dire looming shortage of up to 7400 rooms by 2032.

Property Council of Australia Executive Director Jess Caire said Brisbane's last major hotel development cycle followed a package of incentives designed to improve feasibility and encourage investment, ultimately helping to deliver landmark projects such as The Westin Brisbane, Emporium South Bank and The Calile Hotel. She said that indicated the accommodation industry wasn't lacking demand, it was facing a feasibility challenge.

'This approach recognises that increasing Brisbane’s accommodation capacity isn't just about new CBD hotels. Suitable suburban pub sites can also play a valuable role in delivering additional rooms, supporting local jobs and driving economic activity across the city.

Visitors increasingly want a range of accommodation experiences and providing more options closer to family, friends, local centres and tourism attractions will strengthen Brisbane’s appeal while helping address the city's accommodation shortfall. As Brisbane prepares for continued population growth, major events and the 2032 Games, every additional room helps'.

EXAMPLES OF PROPOSED HEIGHT CHANGES 

Major Centres

Nundah, Toombul, Mitchelton, Toowong, Indooroopilly, Wynnum and Carindale: 10-12 storeys

Neighbourhood Centre: 3-4 storeys or five storeys if on a site greater than 3000 sqm

Mixed use: 5-7 storeys

Low-density residential: 2-4 storeys

Low- to medium-density residential: 3-4 storeys to 4-6 storeys

There’s a photography company in Morayfield shopping centre for kids and their whole concept is to get you to stop while you’re walking by for a free photo. Then they let you know your free photo will be ready in two weeks where you’ll meet with a sales parson who will pitch the whole pack of photos to you for $595 and drop it in price and “do you a special deal” or say “ you’re the only person getting a special deal today” and drop it to $550. They wouldn’t let me buy anything individually unless I paid $70 per photo. If you see them in the shopping centre, just remember there are cheaper less scammy photographers out there. I hate the gross way they reel you in then sales pitch. They don’t allow reviews and when I commented what I paid for a few photos my comment magically disappeared. Just posting this here so when someone wants an honest review with prices it pops up for them 😬

Outsourcing the event upstate or interstate seems unnecessary as there's a rowing club ON the river.

I don't know the logistics of such an event, but considering the recent Ferry strikes and our numerous bridges, we could do it, no?

Hi everyone, I’m building a 6m x 4m west-facing deck on the Brisbane southside and can’t decide between Spotted Gum and Merbau to handle our brutal afternoon heat, heavy summer downpours, and local termite risks. Spotted Gum is a dense Class 1 native with great natural termite resistance and minimal tannin bleed, but it's significantly pricier and harder to work with. Merbau is much cheaper and naturally durable, but I'm terrified its heavy red tannin bleed will completely ruin the light gray render and new pavers sitting directly underneath during the first big downpour. We're using H4 treated pine for the subfloor, but for those who’ve had hardwood decks down in SEQ for 5+ years, does Spotted Gum hold up noticeably better against the summer UV, or is Merbau worth the risk if I wash out the tannins early?

Save ORMISTON KOALAS

This afternoon I witnessed something incredibly beautiful — and incredibly heartbreaking at the same time.

A beautiful mother koala and her Joey were photographed inside the proposed Early Learning Centre area of Ormiston College, in the very area where the College is planning to remove more trees.

Both Mum and Joey are untagged.

And these trees are not simply trees.

They are part of the home range of koalas.

This is happening right in front of us.

And it comes just days after Leaf was in the ELC area last weekend.

We have already watched the heartbreak surrounding Leaf and the loss of her Joey. The last thing I want to see is another mother and another Joey becoming victims of further habitat removal.

At what point do we stop and say:

ENOUGH.

How many more koalas have to be photographed?

How many more mothers and Joeys do we need to see?

How much more evidence do we need that koalas are living in and around Ormiston College?

These animals are not statistics.

They are not an inconvenience.

They are not something that can simply be moved aside because development is planned.

They live here.

And the community knows it.

We have people who have spent years observing these koalas. We have residents, wildlife advocates and researchers who care deeply about what happens to this habitat.

The community has a lot to offer Ormiston College.

But we need the College to be willing to listen.

HEADMASTER — YOU SAID YOU LOVE KOALAS.

When members of our community were desperately searching for Leaf’s Joey, you told us that you love koalas.

I genuinely hope that is true.

But love for koalas cannot just be words.

Love has to be demonstrated by our actions.

Especially when protecting koala habitat becomes inconvenient, difficult or costly.

Because right now, we are asking you to look at these photographs.

Look at this mother.

Look at her Joey.

Look at where they are living.

They are in the very area where more trees are planned to be removed.

What would it mean to truly love koalas?

It would mean stopping.

It would mean listening.

It would mean being open to the community.

It would mean looking at the evidence and asking whether there is another way.

It would mean saving these trees.

We are not asking the College to abandon its future.

We are asking it to rethink how that future is achieved.

If Ormiston College does not want to be remembered for the destruction of important koala habitat, then now is the time to change the story.

You still have a choice.

You can continue down the path you are on.

Or you can show this community that when confronted with the reality of koalas living on your grounds, you listened and you chose to protect them.

Let your legacy be different.

Don’t let the legacy of this expansion be the destruction of koala habitat.

Let it be the moment when Ormiston College said:

“We can do better.”

“We can find another way.”

“These koalas matter.”

This beautiful mother and her Joey deserve better.

Our wildlife deserves better.

And our community deserves to have its voice heard.

Is anyone else getting constant calls from Ray White?

They keep telling owner-occupiers that the market is heading down or could crash, seemingly to create fear and encourage people to sell. Is that really an acceptable way to do business?

We've told them multiple times over the past six years that we're not selling, yet they continue to contact us. What's funny is that this same time last year they were telling us the market was red hot and it was the best possible time to sell. We said no then, and we're still saying no now.

What I really want to know is: how did they get our phone numbers?

Does anyone know who this can be reported to? I'm particularly worried about elderly neighbours who may not realise they're being repeatedly contacted and pressured into selling for someone else's financial gain.

They shouldn't be subjected to ongoing pressure simply so someone can earn a commission!!!
