u/Sindigo_ 3d ago

Ugh. That Twitter poster makes a great point.

u/Zestyclose-Scale-903 3d ago

It does.. theres so much taken out of the books and for no reason.. this is better

u/Sindigo_ 3d ago

I mean I couldn’t care less and I doubt it will be better but fair enough.

u/TSLstudio 2d ago

You should wait till books 4-6 the differences between movies and books is insane!

Especially book 4 most of the book plot is completely scratched in the movie.

u/ColdCruise 2d ago

The whole point of book 6 is to explore Voldemort's backstory so Harry can try to learn what the horcruxes are and where to find them. They cut all of that out of the movie, so they changed it so he conveniently gets visions of the horcruxes now for some reason.

Also a key plot point in the seventh movie is when Harry pulls a shard of glass out of his sock and is able to talk to Aberforth who sends Dobby to help them. In the movies it's never explained why Harry has that or why he would be able to talk to someone using it.

u/gomets6091 2d ago

I was so disappointed in movie 6 - book 6 is by far my favorite and they cut all the best stuff from it.

u/John_Bot 2d ago

Yeah I'm the same.

Best book, worst movie

u/jeobleo 2d ago

You guys are high. Book 6 sucked balls. It was "Here's a thin plot stretched around a bunch of backstory on a character you don't give a shit about. Also a predatory professor. Enjoy!"

u/Own_Guarantee_8130 2d ago

Right? I started getting irritated with all the Voldemort back lore. I loved when they were just having adventures at Hogwarts and learning magic. Goblet of fire has all the adventure of the wizarding world before it got all dark. Peak HP!

u/Earlier-Today 2d ago

We saw the fifth movie in the theaters and my Mom had to keep leaning over to ask me what was going on because that movie is more like a rough outline of the book that mostly just touches on the major story beats.

But with a bunch of nonsense filler taking up time in the name of "comedy".

Like Filch nailing Umbridge's decrees up on the wall, and ooh, look at how far his ladder bucks off the wall with each hammer blow!

Just ignore that NO ONE CAN READ THEM TWENTY FEET IN THE AIR!

Such terrible adaptations.

u/Emmit-Nervend 2d ago

I also resented how they treated Umbridge’s rules as silly nagging. Every edict in the book was a serious blow! “BAM no quidditch! BAM the antidote to my propaganda is banned!”

“Oh Umbridge is so horrible in the movies!” SHE WASN’T HORRIBLE *ENOUGH.*

TBF, the movie was released in 2001. Order of the Phoenix didn't come out until 2003. It wasn't yet apparent Neville was anything more than a bumbling, comic relief side character.

Cutting him from the movie scene made sense at the time.

u/Desperate-Tomatillo7 3d ago

Wasn't Rowling part of the production? Or even she did not have considered the relevance of Neville back then?

u/Recent_Lunch_7249 3d ago

She was pretty terrible at stuff like this. Forgot to include a scene of Harry picking up the mirror shard he'd use to see Aberforth so it just awkwardly shows up at the start of Deathly Hallows 2.

u/SoulTechnicalProblem 3d ago

Most writers don't think ahead more than the current book.

u/RosaCanina87 3d ago

Writer here. It's somewhat true. We might think about the next book if we plan a series. But we sure don't think of every little detail. Especially during earlier parts of a book.

u/Kinslayer_89 2d ago

Unless you’re writing Futurama, and Nibbler actually is in the first episode.

u/CiaphasKirby 2d ago

That's actually more of the same. In the commentary, they mentioned they put it in without having a real idea of how it was going to get used in the future.

u/chunseye 3d ago

I read (but did not check) she had a talk with the publisher before publishing book 1, as they were not that sold on book 1, so she explained the main story line up to and including book 7, and that convinced them. So she did have the big plot line in her head at least.

u/Gunner_Goal1349 3d ago

Neville had a definite presence in the movies. In the scenes where he was cut, did it really contain much crucial character or plot development? He was never a main character, not even in the books. He turned out to be super important to the story yes, but I don't think it makes much difference whether he was present for many scenes. Other than a chance to get to know him a bit more.

u/melo-one_2015 3d ago

"other than a chance to get to know him a bit more"
That's called character development and it's pretty impotant.

u/NerdHoovy 2d ago

Yes and no.

Putting only the main 3 in the scene is visually more efficient since it is easier for our brain to keep 3 things in mind at once. And just including a scene of a character is not worthwhile developed or progression, if that character doesn’t end up doing very much both in the long and short term.

Despite what most seem to think Neville is not that important to the narrative overall, that’s why he was so easy to cut in most of the movies. Same with Debbie in every movie after 2, where he made a cameo and his awful death in 7. It’s unlikely we’d gain much overall from Neville’s extended screen time, so adding it is probably not worth while

u/baobabbling 2d ago

I'm sorry but the "Debbie" autocorrect error is absolutely hysterical.

Authors aren't usually given much control of how an adaptation of their books will go.  Rowling had minimal say in how the productions went. She did insist that everyone on the cast had to be from the UK, but there wasn't much she could control beyond that.

It's not for no reason. You get MAX 3 hours on a movie, I'd imagine they'll have a lot more room on a TV show

u/Icy-Guarantee6994 3d ago edited 3d ago

And it's almost the opposite problem, at least with the early books. They might be too short for full episodes. The latter books will pose the opposite problem (again) as they might be too long for just 10 episodes a season. But we'll get there if we ever get there.

Black Snape doesn't inspire much confidence, though.

u/Krabs9 3d ago

Yeah I still don't get the decision to cast a black Snape. That specific character makes no sense, black Hagrid would make more sense.

u/Dodo_Baron 3d ago

It's literally just because the actor is fantastic

u/Nocluejustgenerate 2d ago

I feel they didn't think this through cause that dude is supposed to get hung up and bullied by a bunch of white kids

not to mention Harry distrusts him from the get go pretty much solely based off his creepy appearance (which the actor doesn't fit, bro radiates handsome man energy). they're really asking for that racism conroversy

Not really. Theres no need to have every detail depocted on screen. With that logic the lord of the rings should have a remake because Glorfindel was not the one to save Frodo but Arwen was

u/Icy-Guarantee6994 3d ago edited 3d ago

Or because they totally excluded Tom Bombadil.

In the grand scheme of things, while not as faithful as an adaptation, good old Tom Bombadil wasn't that important compared to everything else that did make the cut.

u/Material_Magazine989 3d ago edited 2d ago

2 hour movie vs. 8 hours worth of episode

And the thing is, it's true that the first 2 movies are close to the books, but book 3 onwards are far too big and those books are the reason for re-adaptation.

u/Lashay_Sombra 2d ago

and those books are the reason for re-adaptation.

Think more money is far bigger reason

u/baobabbling 2d ago

Money, and Rowling desperately wanting to be able to separate the series from the three main actors who have called her out on being a bigot.

u/_Ibn_Battuta_ 2d ago

Half-Blood Prince reduced what was multiple chapters and easily ~100 pages of Tom Riddles/Voldemorts backstory into like 5 minutes of flashbacks in the film. Those more a major part of that book and the way the narrative is told, switching between the current time with Harry and the gang and then a following chapter it being a flashback. Basically all gone.

The new Harry Potter television series has more screen time, allowing it to adapt the source material more accurately.

u/FactsNLaughs 3d ago edited 3d ago

Roughly about 10 hours more screen time, so yea they get a lot more time to flesh it out

Edit: I was high balling. It’s closer to 5 hours extra screen time for the first season compared to the movie

u/az9393 3d ago

They won’t use it to show more source material will they?

u/FactsNLaughs 3d ago

I mean, have you watched the trailer? Shit was loaded with minuscule details from the book

Snape was basically a member of Hitlers Youth wasn't he? Bullying is always nasty but he was totally for the torture, subjugation and murder of muggles. Dude was a piece of crap even as a teen.

u/KiddingQ 2d ago

Not by that point in the plot no, he was just a Slytherin kid who was interested in dark magic and the marauders had been bullying him for almost their entire stint at Hogwarts (so from 11-12 y/o)

Dude became a bad person who made bad choices but the entire point was that his treatment by his abusive parents, lack of care from teachers and bullying from peers of other houses lead to those bad choices.

u/predi1988 2d ago

The marauders bullied him because he was into the dark magic stuff, hung out with other dark magic supporting kids, practiced dark arts. Lily was protecting him since they were childhood friends, but that stopped, when out of anger he called her mudblood too. (basically like calling your friend an N-word with a hard R) That showed his true colors, even when he tried to apologize, he didn't want to call Lily that. That showed he would treat others like that, Lily was just a special case.

So no, while their methods were despicable too, they didn't bully Snape for no reason, causing him to join the Death Eaters. He was very much already on that path, and that's why they despised him.

u/ThatInAHat 2d ago

The Mauraders bullied him because he was a poor ugly kid in the Wrong House and, most importantly, was close with the girl their leader liked.

u/Loaf235 2d ago

I think people are still stuck on the Fantastic Beasts' sequels' poor reception, ignoring that the themed lands in Universal Studios are still very much packed and the studio tours being visited a ton.

The heart poured into the original films and themed lands by other artists just can't be swept away that easily, especially when some of the UK's most prolific actors were involved, as well as you know, John Williams. Must be one of those corpses that you cut open and it's filled with money, and then underneath the corpse is an even larger pile of money.

Maybe it’s a book character that was cut from the movies, like, Neville Longbottom was originally in that scene or something.

u/kc_chiefs_ 3d ago

I dunno, that’s crazy talk.

u/Useful_Trust 3d ago

Neville longbottom was the spare chosen one change my mind

u/StatementJolly8237 3d ago

I’m pretty sure this is pretty explicitly stated in the books. Not really a hot take.

u/night4345 2d ago

Not really a "spare" but another person who the prophecy could've been referring to. Voldemort choosing Harry because they're both Half-Bloods.

u/Sparkly_Crow_1789 2d ago

A fact I did like about the books is that it takes both Harry and Neville to kill Voldemort. It's a nice touch. To this day it could be interpreted as both of them being required, or just a coincidence.

JK Rowling still sucks ass tho so I'll look at stuff exploring that in fanfics. And cry because so many forget that moment

Neville is a few hours older so wouldnt that make Harry the spare that fulfilled the prophecy instead of the original?

→ More replies (3)

u/AliBelle1 2d ago

The very fact that Voldemort attacked Harry meant that Harry was from then on the chosen one. Dumbledore even spells this out for Harry after the battle at the department of mysteries. The prophecy mentions "marked as his equal".

While Neville also fit all the criteria, the moment Voldemort went to Godric's Hollow decided who would be the chosen one.

His parents were also killed by voldemort, he was born as the seventh month dies, and also they were founding members of the order of the Phoenix

u/Kellerhouse 3d ago

His parents weren’t killed. Bellatrix made them crazy with the Cruciatus curse.

u/Useful_Trust 3d ago

Silence, I am cherry picking evidence, and you are using facts to tear down my theory.

u/darwinistinabox 3d ago

Parents of the chosen were said to have confronted the dark lord before (twice iirc) and survived. Both the Potters and the Longbottoms did so. Voldy more or less gambled when he chose the Potters. Both families were completely identical in regards to the prophecy. Even their background was more or less similar.

Oh I thought it was because JK needed more money to lobby for oppressing people.

u/Junior_M_W 3d ago

Lobbying in the UK costs very little, compared to the USA. She already has enough.

u/terrorbyte66 3d ago

Great. Then let's not give her any more if we can help it.

It’s crazy how there are people in this thread (and others) who are still whining about details that were omitted for the movies.

Like, aren’t you guys in your 30s at the very least?

In the movies, Nevil was written out of some scenes (or replaced by Hermiony only)

u/NegroniSpritz 2d ago

Oh interesting, that’s why it always fell so off that a seemingly minor character like him would cut the head of the snake. So he was there all along in the books!

u/Brokengoods4u 2d ago

In the books there's also explained that Neville could have been the chosen one. (Also movie Hermione got a lot of the cool traits of book Ron)

u/NegroniSpritz 2d ago

Thanks! That’s cool info! Which traits from Ron got Hermione?

u/_S3RAPH_ 2d ago

In the movies, Hermione's characterization as "the smart one" led to her pretty much always being the source of exposition. In the books, while she is very academic and book smart, there are things she simply doesn't understand about wizard culture because she was muggle-born. Ron, being the only one of the trio who was actually raised in the wizarding world, is usually the one who will explain things about wizarding culture to the other two, especially when that thing is something that is not going to be found in books, such as prejudices and biases.

One big example is in Chamber of Secrets when Draco calls Hermione a mudblood. In the movie, Hermione explains (through tears) to Harry what mudblood means. In the book, she had no idea what the term means - Ron instead is the person that explains the background of wizarding prejudice based on blood status to the other two. Because a bigoted slur like that is not the type of term a 12-year-old will come across in her schoolbooks.

Other moments where Ron explains something in the books, but the lines are given to Hermione in the movies - explaining the bias against Parseltongue, werewolves, and giants that wizards have.

u/Affection_sira 2d ago

damn that explain alot about ron seemingly left out in the film
while he is get screen time here and there, ron felt really not that important in the grand scheme of things in the movie

u/nyxxxtron 2d ago

Ron was just the idiot friend surviving by luck in the movies

u/peccadilloz 2d ago

tbh so was Harry a lot of the time.

u/Pyorrhea 2d ago

Yeah, they took much of Harry's bravery and magical instincts and also gave those to Hermione.

u/Actual-Location-6797 2d ago

It's also that book Ron has more street smarts than movie Ron. A lot of those scenes where written in favor of Hermione as well in the movies.

→ More replies (1)

u/NegroniSpritz 2d ago

Thanks! Yeah it does make sense that Ron would explain the pop culture to the other two, never thought about it. I think in the movies they present Hermione as the only one of the trio who always “gets” the things or is always in control, while Ron gets the worst part looking like the buffoon of the three and it seems in the books he was better.

And they cut a bunch of great Ron moments by giving them to Hermione or making Ron an ass instead.

They have a clear Hermione halo in the movies.

In the books, it's the four of them in this scene. Movies reduced it to just the trio.

The series is looking to retain more details from the books than the movies did, so they have all four of them in the scene.

This remake is being done because of money

As opposed to every other adaptation that’s ever done of a previous film or book, which is only ever done on a non-profit basis

u/Willing_Original_257 3d ago

Typically that's why things are financed, yes

→ More replies (8)

u/ThatOneDMish 3d ago

No, we know exactly the reason why the remake is being done. It's because the mold infested terf wants to replace the original cast because they have morals and don't support her transphobic crusade

u/eawilweawil 2d ago

Lol they would be making this thing even if JK wasn't a terf. It's all greed motivated, they don't give a shit who she is, they just want more franchises to milk

u/ThatOneDMish 2d ago

Hbo sure, they'd want it for moneys sake. I'm not suggesting they have some transphobic agenda. I'm suggesting the reason she's gunning for it is bc the prev cast stood up to her

Carter here, off course the answer is money, no matter the amount of people crying over the changes the first movie lineup made to the story from the books.

u/kander12 3d ago

I mean... anyone who never read the books is about to be super confused in a lot of scenes. The movies straight up cut out some characters completely lol
