It was. But I get the skepticism, what with so many adaptations being full of original material that deviates from the source material and leaves perfectly good content un-adapted.
witchers showrunner have promised each new season "this time we would be faithfull to the books" so i'm not surprised there is scepticism from people, ofc this are not the same people, but if each time you are promised something good and given shit at some point you start to expect shit anyway
That's one reason The Expanse was such a good TV adaptation. It was written by the books' author. Not a consultant like Game of Thrones, or getting ahead of the books, but the book author was the screenplay author. So picked what to drop, what to focus on, and adapted the TV version to fit the actors and real time feedback of what's working well.
There is a big gap in the timeline in the books, I hope they make the last few books into fresh seasons. The Expanse: Laconia, for 3 seasons. They just have to write around Alex's departure.
This joke hits harder since one of the most important potions they make, in multiple books, is the poly juice potion (or whatever it's called) that allows people to turn into someone else. I think it's used in at least 3 of the books.
Want to add, Hans Zimmer, one of the greatest names in film music, didn’t have to accept this job for the money or the fame as he already wrote scores on huge blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean.
Yet he gladly took the job at an instant.
So I did some googling, and there are allegations against him for harassing an employee who, who would have guessed, is a transgender person.
And if we look at other recent adaptations it's not so asinine to ask this. They tend to use the extra time not to be faithful to the books, but instead to do their own stuff.
First season (8 episodes) should be roughly as long as the audiobook (8h18m), which makes sense if the entire book is adapted to script. I would hope that means the later books have more episodes, but then I wonder what the logistics of production will work. OotP is 26.5 hours.
Snape was basically a member of Hitlers Youth wasn't he? Bullying is always nasty but he was totally for the torture, subjugation and murder of muggles. Dude was a piece of crap even as a teen.
Not by that point in the plot no, he was just a Slytherin kid who was interested in dark magic and the marauders had been bullying him for almost their entire stint at Hogwarts (so from 11-12 y/o)
Dude became a bad person who made bad choices but the entire point was that his treatment by his abusive parents, lack of care from teachers and bullying from peers of other houses lead to those bad choices.
The marauders bullied him because he was into the dark magic stuff, hung out with other dark magic supporting kids, practiced dark arts. Lily was protecting him since they were childhood friends, but that stopped, when out of anger he called her mudblood too. (basically like calling your friend an N-word with a hard R) That showed his true colors, even when he tried to apologize, he didn't want to call Lily that. That showed he would treat others like that, Lily was just a special case.
So no, while their methods were despicable too, they didn't bully Snape for no reason, causing him to join the Death Eaters. He was very much already on that path, and that's why they despised him.
No that's not true at all and it's a very simplified view of what was happening. Snape was a troubled kid from a bad home and was already known for his inteterest in the dark arts at a young age.
Death eaters and Voldemort were taking power and this guy doesn't hide his disdain for mudbloods. He's a racist shithead. He should be put on the right path rather than bullied, but he wasn't just some poor innocent getting bullied by the football captain because he was bored and wanted to feel better about himself.
There's a lot of Snape revisionism because he loved one woman but he was an awful human being through and through
On the train to Hogwarts, Snape and Lily were in a 4-person car, and Lily was literally crying "My sister hates me because of you" (because Snape treated Petunia like crap because she was a Muggle, and then invaded her privacy and mocked her for wanting to follow Lily to Hogwarts), and then Snape barely stopped himself from slurring Petunia in front of her sister. And then Snape told a crying Lily "You'd better join Nazi House", which was when James (minding his own business up until this point) barged into their conversation with "I think I'd rather be dead than join Nazi House" which triggered Snape horrifically.
That's not bullying, that Snape being a toxic, racist Nazi, and James not tolerating that.
He was not a "half-blood getting lynched by a rich white boy" he was a violent blood supremacist bully who got a taste of his own medicine by other bullies. They literally used his own spell against him.
The text itself gives zero implication that Snape was a full "violent blood supremacist" by that stage in the timeline, I read the books years ago and have fucking no clue how the interpretation that he was that bad as a 15 y/o kid has become so widespread among people.
Harrys mum defended him in that scene for a reason, she still considered him a friend at that point, he also tried to apologise afterwards as well which I seriously doubt a full blood supremacist (like a Malfoy) would do.
He literally called her a slur in that very scene. Afterward, when he tried to apologize, she pointed out that his friend used dark magic on another student and he defended it. She said it was well known they all wanted to be death eaters. He was absolutely a violent blood supremacist by that point.
> he also tried to apologize afterwards as well which I seriously doubt a full blood supremacist (like a Malfoy) would do.
I was mostly with you until this.
Real racists do this all the time. They justify their racism by carving out an exception for “well-behaved” minorities, allowing them to think things like “I couldn’t possibly be a racist because I like so-and-so… right?” It’s a coping mechanism.
There's so many people in the HP Fandom that seem to believe that Snape having a bad day as a teenager (which as you say, he still showed compassion amd empathy on his bad day) is all the evidence they need that he's an immoral sociopath that was destined to be pure evil.
It's shameful, but when I was a kid my friend and I got in a big fight, and I called him the N word. I would hate to think that one moment of purely racist speech would be enough to define me for the rest of my life. It's the only time I've ever done anything like that, and I carry it with me to make myself, and the world around me, better.
When you called your friend a slur, were you also a member of the youth KKK club or idolizing the Grand Wizard? Did you also call other kids that same slur, but only felt bad when you "accidentally" called your friend that? Did you then later join the actual KKK, work directly under the Grand Wizard, and then only feel bad when your friend died?
Well, the bullying came before Voldemort and Death Eaters were a widely known problem. It's part of why Snape went to them. He would have preferred to be close to Lily, but the 'Good Guys' already turned Snape into an enemy.
How often was he calling other kids mudbloods, do we know that it was a regular thing for him? Or was it a moment of extreme emotion? What other kkk or racist equivalent organisation's was he part of at that time in his life?
People are so desperate to call it lynching, that they ignore the other horrible thing that happened. If four boys had turned a girl upside down, exposed her underwear to the whole school, and then announced they were going to take off her underwear, everybody would be screaming sexual assault. The victim being male doesn't change the fact it's sexual assault not merely bullying.
Jesus Christ how are people seriously still calling that a lynching? He got hung by his ankles in the air which isn’t meant to kill only humiliate… and it wasn’t even under a tree like everyone says (the marauders were sitting under a tree and then left that space to go after Snape). This is just classic bullying without any racial element, and news flash sometimes people of different races bully each other without it being racial.
Like it’s insulting to call that a lynching. Extrajudicial murder based on racism isn’t the same thing as bullying.
A 20 years younger Alan Rickman would've been the best option, but alas. In current times, I think Adam Driver would be a great choice, even if he's 10 years older than Snape at this point should be.
In the movies they aged the entire generation to make Snape stand out less; which is fine IMO since Lily and James had Harry very young in the books. But a more intermediate aging would make more sense, 10 years iso 20.
I agree that Snape was a weird character to make black since he is known to have pale skin.
On the other hand did Alan Rickman such a great job playing Snape that the only way to not compare them is to cast a totally different actor. I could see it working.
Oh, I stand corrected. It was discussed when the park opened, but seems they ultimately chose yearly payments. She gets a percentage of all merch and themed food sold.
At this point I don't really see how this series is going to inflate her wealth in a way that she is not already capable of doing. She is a billionaire, you can basically print money at that point by taking loans, paying zero taxes, purchasing investments, and then using those investments as collateral to do it again.
I still will not be watching the show, I would prefer it fail despite the childhood part of me being interested in it. I would prefer to keep additional money out of JKs pockets, but I just don't think it will make a big impact.
Of course it won't. HP franchise, even without this crappy show, has been extremely profitable. You only have to look at the latest game released, it didn't feature Harry in it, and it still ranked number 1 in sales the year it released. They hype never really died down.
Yeah. Rowling created one of the most iconic franchises of all time. HP will keep making money no matter what, It has incredible staying power.
And It becoming so expanded into different media just gives it more popularity and people who don't care or don't even know about Rowling's controversies.
Of course she would, I am not saying she wouldn’t. Just the sheer amount being sold, she has to be making bank. People eat HP themed food at the park even when they aren’t interested in the IP
True. They have a Harry Potter themed gift shop right there in City Walk; the store and restaurant area right outside the parks, that you don’t need a ticket/s to enter. The store even sold the Butter Beer that’s provided in the parks (so I guess people who didn’t buy park tickets can still access the items in the Harry Potter sections).
Even without park ticket sales, the IP/brand alone in merchandise is making her money.
So if you take 10 of my political views on various things, and find 9 of them conform to typical American left wing doctrine - but one of them doesn't - that suddenly means i'm far right?
What if I were a massive trump fan and voter. Who hates immigrants and wants them all deported. Someone who backs the police no matter what even as they murder citizens unjustly. But, oh wait! I embrace the left wing view on the transgender issue for some reason!
Going by what you've said, that means I'm actually not far right. I'm left wing.
Like what even is this logic? People can still broadly be on the same side as you and have different views on some issues.
Except she puts 100% of her clout, time, money, and attention into being a professional hater. Forget whether it’s right or left wing, it’s hateful bigotry.
You know, the whole thing her series warned against. If Lucius Malfoy was politically in favor of progressive tax policies it wouldn’t make him NOT a Death Eater.
Like part of her origin story for you guys is supposed to be she wanted to fund a womens only rape shelter. She spends her money on so much charity to say its on professional hating when she actually helps people is telling on yourself.
I’ve followed her career for a very long time, you don’t need to teach me. The “womens only rape shelter” is her way of excluding. Again: is it charity if Lucius wants to fund a scholarship program for pureblood children only? Do we then excuse rhetoric that “mudbloods are just muggles pretending to be wizards”?
Literally her arguments against trans people are the things I wrote as Death Eater propaganda when I wrote HP fanfic. It’s insane that she can’t see the hypocrisy.
This gets talked so little because the same people who are so conserned of feelings of adult men somehow show no interest in matters of vulnerable children and women.
I want to respect people's feelings but a man's wish to get into women's spaces is not on the same level of consern than people in more vulnerable position to be safe.
If you have 9 liberal talking points and 1 conservative talking point but you spend 99% of your life talking about that one right wing talking point then, yeah, if makes you right wing.
What if I were a massive trump fan and voter. Who hates immigrants and wants them all deported. Someone who backs the police no matter what even as they murder citizens unjustly. But, oh wait! I embrace the left wing view on the transgender issue for some reason!
Well, you're not wrong. But in either cases I would still consider you a piece of shit for targeting a minority and I think that most people associate that with being ring wing
JK doesn't need to get more money so she can fund her far right view points
The far right view points:
Through Lumos, she is working to end the institutionalization of children worldwide. In over two decades, they've helped 280,000+ children and young people, across 12+ countries, to flourish in families
Donating for medical research, supporting multiple sclerosis research, which led to the creation of the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic in Edinburgh
Co-founded Beira’s Place for girls and women escaping sexual violence
Helped women and children escape the Taliban in Afghanistan
Donating and helping charities so much that she lost her billionaire status
You’d have a point about nuance if you didn’t in bad faith ignore what they were actually criticizing that you knew they were.
Sorry, I'm tired of all the lies and disinformation being spammed on Reddit whenever JK is mentioned, and made to seem as if she were the Devil Incarnate.
And she is also funding a Women's fund with the goal of helping ciswomen fight legal battle against trans gender people in case of discrimination and other legal dispute.
I'm sorry, but if on one side you are helping specifically a gender/race but on the other side you are funding a terrorist group, you are not a good person.
So many "good christian" in the KKK for exemple.
Doing 1 good thing doesn't excuse you going out of your way to harm someone else.
She's not even right wing though. She has a very long very public history of being a leftist. The only thing she disagrees with the left on is trans ideology
Most left of center people manage to go their whole lives without "accidentally" endorsing the public speech and ideas of known nazis... multiple times. As in "We should kill all jewish people" nazis. People who want fascism and want to kill jewish people.
Scratch that I think all of them manage to do that just fine. People left of center are capable of not doing that because they don't agree with nazis on anything except that oxygen and water are pretty cool.
Yeah, the woman with several Nazi pals who isn't particularly fond of a lot of women is very left. Even if she was actually a liberal, which she isn't, that's still center right.
She's a feminist my brother in Christ. Left by most of the world's standards. Only in the supremely wack idiocracy of America can she be considered right wing, because they moved the needle so damn far left.
I mean, each book covers a YEAR in a kid’s life. You can’t expect a movie to cover all of that. A tv series has some good potential to round out each story more effectively.
Movies don't have to capture all of the books, sometimes short stories make sense to focus on the important part. I would argue the last three movies were already way too long.
Recently tried to rewatch the first movie, and they just zip along from scene to scene. I had no problem with this when I was a kid, but 25 years later it’s just very jarring. Maybe the pace would have slowed down when harry finally gets to hogwarts, to let the magic of magic settle in, but I couldn’t hold on that long.
"Allowing it to bloat more" is, I would submit, a better description.
None of the first three Potter books are substantial enough to warrant a longer adaptation than what they got. This is going to stretch Philosopher's Stone thinner than the Hobbit - and that's not a figure of speech; both will end up running to about eight hours, but the Hobbit is 95k words compared to Philosopher's Stone being 75k.
I hope they spend a lot of time hammering Jewish stereotypes and racist Jewish depictions like the books do. And I hope they spend a lot of time justifying slavery. And just for fun, put some transphobia in there.
I've seen so many TV Shows lately that just feel like they should've been movies. In the end, the show is going to have more screen time, but they're probably going to find a way to cut just as much from the story anyway. More screen time doesn't mean more story, it usually means more padding. And that is kind of the problem with modern era streaming television.
I hope they actually do that. This is a good sign, but it's still a minor one. I have seen shows and movies that were lauded for being longer and able to adapt more, and people assumed they would, but then they just had a bunch of filler and still left out a lot of stuff people wanted from the things they were adapting from. I hope that is not the case here.
It's going to get flabby if it's faithful to the books. In the later ones Rowling totally did nothing to compress things into fewer pages, which is why they're like 1100 pages long each but don't build the world out nearly as much...

The new Harry Potter television series has more screen time, allowing it to adapt the source material more accurately.
