A horrific traffic accident occurred at 1:00 am this morning near Taichung Hospital, at the intersection of Liuchuan East Road and Minquan Road in the West District of Taichung City. A 38-year-old nurse surnamed Chen was struck by a sedan travelling at high speed while crossing the road and was sent flying 40 metres. Cruelly, after fleeing the scene, the perpetrator returned to the scene, accelerated, and ran over Ms Chen a second time, fracturing her skull and killing her instantly on the spot. The police have arrested the suspect driver based on available leads and are further investigating the cause of the accident, including whether there was intent to murder.

It is reported that the 38-year-old nurse surnamed Chen served at Dali Jen-Ai Hospital in Taichung City. While crossing the road, she was hit by a car at high speed, sending both her and her vehicle flying about 40 metres forward from the pedestrian crossing before crashing heavily to the ground. Even more unbelievably, after the vehicle hit her and fled, it returned and accelerated towards the nurse once again, striking and running over her for a second time, resulting in a fractured skull and her instant death on the spot. The perpetrator fled immediately, but after the police retrieved CCTV footage, the 30-year-old driver was arrested and brought to justice, and the true cause of the entire incident will be clarified.

Members of the Taiwanese community in Vancouver have joined this year’s “UN for Taiwan” campaign with a car formation visible from the air to demonstrate their support ahead of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly which begins at the UN headquarters in New York tomorrow.

Organizers helped 45 vehicles park to spell out “TW” in a parking lot near Vancouver on Saturday, with each vehicle displaying the flag of the Republic of China (ROC).

Participants dressed in flag-themed clothing, waved ROC flags, chanted slogans supporting Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN and displayed signs with the slogan “Chip in with Taiwan.”

Event organizer Chang Chien-hung (張建宏) said that vehicles in the rally featured custom license plates including “TAIWAN,” “TAIPEI,” “NEW TPE” and “TW88,” demonstrating the Taiwanese community’s deep connection to their homeland.

“Although we are in Canada, our hearts are always with Taiwan. Taiwan’s entry into the UN remains one of our most earnest hopes,” he said.

“In the era of artificial intelligence, Taiwan’s semiconductor industry underpins the world, and Taiwan is eager to contribute more globally,” said Liu Yung-chiang (劉永強), co-chair of the Metro Vancouver Overseas Taiwanese Society.

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver Director Liu Li-hsin (劉立欣) said Canada values sustainability, green energy and gender equality — progressive ideals that are strengths of Taiwan and core UN objectives.

Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN would enable the nation to contribute even more to the global community, she added.

The General Debate of the 81th session of the UN General Assembly takes place from Sept. 22 to Sept. 28, themed “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”

“Delivering for all” means leaving no one behind, and Taiwan is an important and responsible member of the international community, she said.

The 23.5 million people of Taiwan are willing to fulfill their responsibilities as global citizens, and their rights and interests should not be overlooked, she added.

In Taipei, President William Lai (賴清德) on Saturday said China deliberately misinterprets UN Resolution 2758 to claim sovereignty over Taiwan.

During his speech at a Lawyers’ Day banquet hosted by the Taiwan Bar Association, Lai said the resolution only addressed the issue of China’s representation at the UN and has no bearing on Taiwan’s status.

He expressed hope that members of the Taiwan Bar Association would continue speaking up for Taiwan at home and abroad.

I’m considering applying for a PhD at National Taiwan University (NTU) as an international student, probably in political science / international relations / political economy, and I’m trying to understand what the realistic funding situation is.

I’ve seen NTU information about the NSTC PhD Scholarship, which appears to provide NT$40,000 per month for PhD students.

For anyone familiar with NTU or currently studying there:
- Is the NT$40,000/month NSTC PhD Scholarship actually available to international PhD students?
- Is it competitive, and how realistic is it to receive?
- Is the NT$40,000 paid for the full academic year or only certain months?
- Does it come with a tuition waiver, or is tuition paid separately?
- Is it renewable each year, and what conditions do you need to meet?
- Does eligibility or availability differ significantly between departments, particularly Political Science / Social Sciences?

I’m also interested in other realistic funding options for an international PhD student at NTU.
For example, are there:
- NTU scholarships/fellowships
- Taiwan/MOE scholarships
- NSTC research assistantships or project funding
- Supervisor-funded PhD positions
- Departmental scholarships
- Tuition waivers
- Other government or university funding schemes
that international students in the social sciences actually manage to get?

I’m less interested in the maximum possible funding advertised by the university and more interested in what an international PhD student could realistically expect to receive per month, and whether it would cover tuition and living costs.

If anyone is currently doing a PhD at NTU, particularly in political science, international relations, public policy or related social sciences, I’d really appreciate hearing what your actual funding package looks like.

I am horrendous when it comes to umbrellas. I buy one and lose it almost just as quickly, forgetting them somewhere like on the mrt or a restaurant. And I generally dont like to take one with me unless it is actually raining outside. But the nice thing is MRTs have the “love umbrellas” that you can get if you don’t have your own when it rains.

A few days ago when it was rainy, I got a pretty good umbrella from the MRT. It’s worth A LOT, like $5000 NTD. I didn’t even realize it was a designer brand umbrella until I got home. It was just sitting on the rack with the rest of the forgotten umbrellas. But I told my roommate: “this is a good one! I’m gonna really try to hold on to this one for sure!”

But roommate, who is Taiwanese, didn’t seem very amused and said I should return it when I have the time. I had no idea we actually HAD TO return them… and I have NEVER seen anyone return an umbrella to those MRT umbrella racks, only take.

“Someone could be looking for that umbrella and if they catch you on camera taking it away and never returning it, they could sue you! And in Taiwan it’s bad luck to take someone’s umbrella back into your home.”

I’m thinking wtf is it really that serious? I’m someone lost it and I took it from the MRT to use, I’m not stealing it am I? And I get it, it’s an expensive umbrella and someone could really be wanting it back, but at this point, who knows how long the umbrella has been in the lost and found? Could the cameras really track me and the umbrella and find out I kept it for personal use?

What would you do in this situation?

I will apparently have several classes with athletes (typically all boys) and eh kinda chaotic? Today I had my first all boys class (about 40?) and it went quite terrible lol. I am a woman (if that matters, maybe it does..)

Anyways, going in I was already aware that the schools English level isn’t so high and that they are beginner level for the most part. I don’t mind, still pumped about a new environment, new students etc. The teachers and staff and welcoming, which I appreciate.

But I am kinda worried for the classes with all boys…they were LOUD. Granted the semester just started, they’re excited and what not, but nothing ticks me off more than when students talk over me when I am teaching (I have taught in the US and in Taiwan and although I’m not a seasoned teacher, I think I am quite decent lol)

I’m not exaggerating when I say they were loud from the moment they walked in.

I mentioned it to the secretary chief who is the go-to person for me and she’s been super helpful and kind. She mentioned she spoke with the homeroom teacher and will notify their coach about their behavior but eh idk if that will do much. She did say their homeroom teacher will drop in next class if they continue to behave poorly.

I will say navigating how to go about this sort of thing is extremely difficult for me as an ESL teacher. If I was teaching back home I would have more authority (grades, parents contact information and coaches information and so on)

BUT I am well aware the dynamic is much different here. This was the first class with them but eh thought I’d see if there are any seasoned teachers on here that have any advice! Or do any of you have an all boys class?

Hey there! I wish to apply to a private university in Taiwan for my undergraduate engineering degree (computer science) and I'm specifically looking for good private options.

Yea ik national universities are considered prestigious in Taiwan but I don't think I would get accepted with my profile, hence private options.

The thing is: throughout my highschool I focused on the competitive entrance exams which are MCQ pattern and neglected my board exams which are subjective, theory pattern exams and hence ended up scoring 70%.

I have created a few multiplayer video games using Unity Engine and Claude Code. I have IELTS 8 in English.

I'm worried that elite private unis like Tamkang or Yuan Ze will reject my application due to the 70% score in the high school exam.

Which universities should I target?

Is admission to Yuan Ze and Tamkang possible with my profile?

I will proceed to a good national university for my masters degree after completing bachelors. I haven't taken admission in any Indian University as I have decided to apply abroad.

My wife wants to travel to Taiwan for her own interests, and is considering taking our children there next year. With the current Geopolitical climate in the US, and the Davidson Window looming, plus the 100th anniversary of the formation of the CCP…I feel uneasy about it. I have no idea how to pay the stupid fee. Bank (E Sun) says I must have a SWIFT code to get a money order or a cashier’s check. I can’t get a SWIFT code. I’m told to not send cash What do I do? What am I missing? Also TECRO hasn’t replied to my emails, naturally.

so im a foreign student, and recently i just filled an application for my ARC, only to notice that my emergency contact number for person live in taiwan (which is one of our teacher) has wrong number in extention part.

the form is not yet approved, so i try to call the hotline service 1990, but they say for this case i should call the other number which is +886 (02)2796-7162.

but then the other number cant speak english and told me to contact 1990 😂

what do you guys think should be done in this case? can i just leave it be or?
