🚨🚨New Resource Added: Skilled Trades Career Guide

Upvotes

No idea what to do with your life? Open list below. Pick something that sounds interesting. Go for it.

Yes it's that simple - because your first job will not be your dream job and you are not expected to figure out your dream job by college age.

This isn't just a list of trades. For each trade, we've included:

• Related trades it commonly works alongside or for
• Generally required licensing/certification
• THE DIRECT ENTRY PATH - including apprenticeships, schools, and on-the-job routes
• Who actually hires that trade
• Equipment/materials needed to get started (company provided or self-starter)
• Whether AI is likely to replace the work, or how it may change how it's done in the future

The goal is to help someone go from:

ā€œI don't know how to get into that.ā€

To literally having the path laid out for you - if you're willing to do it.

The list includes mechanical, manufacturing, transportation, aviation, personal services, utilities, crafts, and other skilled occupations. We have intentionally left off medical trades for this list but may add it later.

The resource is free to use and download. Save this. Download it. Send it to someone who needs it. This will open Google Sheets because Reddit does not have functionality for this type of upload.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w23NYX6kn8TDo-jG_pgYZYSOoaTImsj4DHnXBlhvmvM/edit?usp=sharing

AI DISCLOSURE: This resource was created in partnership with ChatGPT. A project covering this many occupations, licensing systems, career pathways, and sources would be impossible or at best take years, for one person to research and organize manually - let alone keep up to date. AI was used as a research and synthesis tool, with career-services-professional human direction and judgment throughout. Please use the guide as a starting point and verify important requirements with authoritative sources in your state.

If you spot a trade we've missed, an outdated requirement, or something that needs correcting, modmail us.

You don't have to know your path yet.

Sometimes you just need to see how many paths there actually are...there's much more than "Plumbing and Electrical".

🚨 New Resource Added: Staffing Agencies Across All 50 States

Upvotes

One of the biggest barriers to finding work is simply knowing where to look.

Over the past several weeks, we've been working on a new career resource for all RSCN communities:

Staffing Agencies in All 50 States

https://www.reddit.com/mod/almosthomeless/wiki/index/staffingagencies

  • Every U.S. state
  • 2–3 major cities per state (or general Statewide for the smaller/less dense states)
  • Multiple staffing and employment agencies for each city
  • Organized into an easy-to-browse resource on our Wiki

If you're looking for temporary work, permanent employment, warehouse jobs, office work, manufacturing, healthcare, or simply trying to get a paycheck coming in quickly, staffing agencies can often be one of the fastest paths back into employment.

This resource is completely free for our community to use. It was developed with 0% AI involvement and the person who developed it, a redditor, was paid reasonably for their time out of my own pocket.

If you know of an agency not on this list OR see a dead link, we'd love to hear about it in the comments so us mods can continue improving this resource over time.

We can't remove every barrier people face. But every barrier we can remove, helps.

Pin this in your Favorites, Save this post, Share it to other communities if you wish.

Currently homeless with a job looking for any free food to carry me over till the 10th

Upvotes

I get paid on the 10th and hope to get into a monthly Airbnb. While I look for a long term room , I’m right on that edge and hoping to get back in a place, just gotta hold on for a few more days. I’m completely out of money though and slept outside last night and looks like tonight too, I reached out to some shelters and they said they’d get back to me on Monday .I’d appreciate any help with food

Seeking Advice Only here by my own stupid decisions, slight tw

Upvotes

im 18, have lived with a shitty family my whole life. they dont care about me. i struggle with addiction and sh, have for a decade. they hate me for it and want me to just do "it" already. im spiraling really bad and i already know im going to relapse. bad. i dont care anymore. if they find out theyll definitely kick me out, ruin my stuff, yell at me. theres no point in trying. i just need to get out now. i have no friends, family in the area. i live in texas. i have nothing. i am a victim of abuse from mental hospitals and rehabs and was my entire teenage years. they are a huge reason i am the way i am. i will absolutely not go to one and i dont have the $ anyway. i dont care if i have some spot on the sidewalk somewhere. im small and female and an easy target. literally anything helps. im not wasting a homeless shelter spot on myself. i know im stupid and this is my own fault.

I am quasi-homeless in Ottawa

Upvotes

It still doesn’t seem entirely real, I spent unfathomable amounts of time alone in my room in front of a computer. Solitary confinement torture.

I have nothing right now, and I haven’t been this happy in years. I have some things but even those I’m hardly using. I have the privilege of having planned the last two years to save up enough money to do this, but now I’m here and I could lose my wallet and still be happier than I was.

Maybe. It’s still scary to imagine that what if, food is expensive already, but the amenities that exist here make me feel secure and safe. I could be homeless here and not suffer as badly as I was suffering back home.

I hadn’t seen someone romantically in maybe 10 years, since coming here on the 28th I’ve met at least a few, and in particular found one I miss already, despite just walking around until 2AM with. It’s cute and wholesome in a way I forgot existed, and I just feel like this is exactly why I left.

Oh man it’s going to hurt, probably. Most things do, but for the moment it’s nice just to hear someone ls heart racing at my touch. My ear to their chest, that rapid flutter, I feel like a doctor weirdly enough. Loud enough to not. Red a stethoscope.

They make me think about some French avant garde artist, minus the fancy smoke. Androgynous. That striped black and white shirt, the sharp features. We got lost in the dark and I didn’t want to be found.

Was really fun. I’m kind of scared about it. Best not to think too much, maybe. For once I want to be allowed to make choices, even if they are mistakes.

It was not worth living life in a cage.

I am so free, that I could cry from the beauty of the feeling, but I’m in public so I won’t. No revelation written in ecstatic trance, just whatever this was.

Seeking Advice Only Anti-NSFW websites at transitional housing program? NSFW

Upvotes

The rule: "I will not use any internet service provided by (program name) for gambling, to view pornography, to harass others, or for any criminal or otherwise unlawful activity."

this is one of the rules for my transitional housing program. I'm asexual so this doesn't matter for me but it's so weird? the program is for youth under 25, like what do you expect teenagers to do?!😭

EDIT:
My program is an apartment with one roomate, the rooms have locks and it's basically "you're an adult, you do everything, and we help a bit if you want" you can refuse help and aren't required to better yourself while in the program (which is weird to me honestly) so it trying to be the most adult experience with mostly freedom, im just surprised this was a rule and couldn't find a good answer for it online

obviously if theres an issue with someone being weird, then they would step in to kick them out or something, with addicts they offer to help get you a therapist but you can refuse and they cant do anything about it. they also allow drugs (alcohol, weed, nicotine type) so its not like they care about sobriety

Facing homelessness in Atlanta after being evicted and misled by family—need advice on immediate shelter & next steps

Upvotes

I am currently facing immediate homelessness in the Atlanta area and desperately need advice on resources or next steps.
Here is my situation:

Background: I was illegally kicked out of a place where I was paying rent, left stranded two hours away, and lost all my belongings. I've been bouncing around since last November.

Recent Events: My grandad told me to come to Atlanta, promising to help me get a place to stay. When I arrived, he paid for one hotel night and then said I was on my own until I got a job.

Current Crisis: The stress led to a mental health crisis, and I was admitted to the hospital. My grandad mistakenly believes the mental hospital will provide long-term housing. They just gave me a stack of shelter papers and discharged me. I walked two hours to a shelter, but it was completely full.

Immediate Barrier: I am temporarily staying with my aunt, but it isn't permanent. I managed to set up two job interviews for next week, but my family is trying to force me back into the hospital tomorrow, thinking it will solve my housing situation—which will cause me to miss these interviews.
What I need help with:

  1. Housing/Shelter Resources: Are there any young adult shelters, transitional housing, or emergency resources in/around Atlanta that actually have open beds or immediate placement?

  2. Navigating Family/Hospital: How can I explain to my family that going to the hospital won't give me an apartment, or how do I protect my chance to make it to these job interviews?

  3. General Advice: Any guidance on securing emergency assistance or getting back on my feet when starting from zero with no transportation or income.
Thank you to anyone who reads this or offers advice.

Seeking Advice Only Completely miserable in school living in van

Upvotes

On my last semester of cc before transferring next Fall. I feel completely overwhelmed and lost right now, I managed to complete two semesters fulltime, I've been living in a van because I have no job to get a place, I've been struggling in the heat, getting around, having constant emergencies, my vehicle just broke down and had to stay in a hotel and use all the grant funds I had. I've been stuck at the bottom for so long, I haven't had any support, my mom barely sends 500 every 3-4 months, I've been trying to make due with financial aid money but it's barely enough. I missed out on an opportunity for housing last semester from being too busy with assignments, now I need to wait 2 weeks to see if I'm still eligible.

My mental health has really taken a toll, I wakeup depressed and angry every single day, I try to force myself to complete assignments on medication because I wouldn't be able to otherwise. I'm on bipolar and ADHD meds. There are no jobs and no opportunities around me even though I've been trying. I've thought about dropping out because my financial & living situation is so bad it's destroyed my sense of self and I don't feel okay anymore. I feel like I'm not going to be able to complete this semester, miss my application to UC and fail like I always fail. I've just been too overwhelmed and I don't know what to do anymore. For the housing support I will likely need a job but I've been trying and there are no jobs around me. I've had no help from my family I've had no one, just myself and it's just too difficult to survive.

Seeking Advice Only I got fired illegally for requesting a reasonable accommodation.. applied for unemployment benefits months ago, and I have been unemployed for months now and still can’t find a job to pay my rent…I have nowhere to go

Upvotes

I recently found out that I am disabled and instead of my employer trying to accommodate me, I got fired for it while I was on medical leave. I requested a part time schedule and stated I needed to use the bathroom frequently because of my IBS. Well my manager did not want to grant me that or accommodate me, she just fired me instead. That was in May. Fast forward to now, I have been fighting for months for my unemployment benefits and I still don’t have any income. I also applied for SSDI but I don’t know if I even qualify and plus that will take months to get an answer. I have no savings to fall back on, my credit cards are maxed out, my internet and cable is already off because I haven’t had any income or was able to pay it. I was thinking about trying to use my retirement savings account and do a permanent withdrawal but I’m having difficulties doing so since there’s a new update on the website that I can’t bypass.

I’m also sick right now and I can’t get treatment because I’m too poor. Although I do have Texas Women’s Health but it’s been impossible to find anyone who can service me with my new insurance. My employer already cut my insurance off when they illegally fired me.

I have nowhere family or support system to call back or friends I can live with. I’m 3 months behind on rent. I’m thinking even if I do get my retirement, that can take another couple of weeks? I haven’t been able to think straight. I’m already on EBT/Food stamps so I don’t have to worry about food but I have no way to cover my rent besides trying to do a permanent withdrawal from my retirement account. I really don’t want to start over but I also can’t afford my rent right now. I’m 3 months behind.. I don’t have a car and have nowhere to go. Not sure if I should just break my lease and use my retirement savings to put a deposit towards a new apartment or if I should try to negotiate with my landlord? I’ve already spoken to them about my situation but I only have 30 days before I need to vacate or they’re going to start the eviction process.. I don’t want to end up on the streets and I also don’t have any money to afford a new apartment. I think the streets may only be my option for right now… I tried calling 211 and they are no help and have no way of helping me.

I really don’t want an eviction on my record but I also have nowhere to go.. any suggestions?

Eviction Phoenix, Arizona rent due Sept. 12 after job loss; available for remote work immediately no

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m located in Phoenix, Arizona, and I’m posting because I’m running out of realistic options and trying to cover the remaining balance on my rent before September 12.

My total rent balance, including late fees, is about $1,290. I currently have $400, which means I am still short about $800.

I have never been late on rent before. I was recently let go from my job after missing work because of an illness. Losing that job put me in a position where I am trying to catch up extremely quickly.

I am actively trying to earn the rest. I am verified on Instawork now and plan to work through it as much as possible this week. I believe I can make around $500 through Instawork this week if I can get enough shifts, which would reduce the rent gap a lot. The problem is that I was unable to use it earlier because my background check took about 14 days to clear, so I lost a lot of time waiting for approval.

I also have a DoorDash account, but my phone service is currently off, so I cannot use DoorDash. My internet may also be disconnected within the next few days, which would cut off one of the main tools I have to search for work and communicate.

A major issue is documentation. The only identity document I currently have is my birth certificate. I do not have a valid government photo ID or driver’s license right now. I have tried other immediate-work options, temp agencies, and assistance routes, but I have been denied or blocked because I do not have the required identification or verification documents.

I also tried plasma donation centers and sperm donation centers, but I was denied because I do not have the required photo ID and documentation.

I have already been hired for a new job, but I cannot formally start working until I obtain my ID.

I applied for rental assistance as well. I have not received a response yet. I do not know whether it is because I am a single adult male, a documentation issue, or simply because I expected the process to move faster than it does. Either way, I cannot depend on it arriving before the deadline.

I have very little to sell. I am sleeping on an air mattress and do not have spare valuables or a vehicle. I am trying to keep my computer because it is my only reliable way to seek work and do online jobs.

I am willing to work here in Phoenix or remotely immediately . If anyone needs legitimate paid help with any of the following, I am available:

Video editing and stream/gameplay clips

Writing, proofreading, resumes, or basic research

Coding and basic technical troubleshooting

Advanced math tutoring or homework help for children, high-school students, or college students

Discord, OBS, Streamlabs, microphone/audio, or streaming setup help

General computer, gaming, controller, or software troubleshooting

I can provide reasonable proof of my rent balance and deadline privately, along with proof of work efforts and my abilities/credentials where applicable, while protecting my personal information.

If anyone has legitimate remote work, local work reachable by public transit in Phoenix, or paid tasks I can begin immediately, I am ready and willing to work. Also if anyone knows of any work available please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for reading.

Running away from home at 19

Upvotes

I'm 19, living with toxic, strict and abusive parents. Some days are just verbal fights but sometimes it turns into physical abuse. I can't live in the same place with PTSD when everyday is the same. I am planning to runaway in less than a year. I don't want to act irresponsible or impulsive because I'm afraid to make a mistake. My plan is to save some money before I leave and move in with my bf of 3 years. My parents didn't allow me to be independent all my life so Im scared to take a big step like this. I really need some suggestions on what to do.

What’s it like to be homeless in LA?

Upvotes

What’s it like being homeless in LA?

Thinking about heading up there on December 30th.

I might want to become a Vagabond in LA. Thinking about staying on Santa Monica beach or Venice beach near the bathrooms. I have a good paying job that will transfer me out so at least I will have that. I will just transfer over to a Whole Foods Market near the beach. So at least I will have an income. Do they have outdoor showers still all year round? I could also take full body showers at a nearby Planet Fitness or a YMCA. (I just saw that they only had a YMCA in Santa Monica.) So I could use that as well.

I would just need to get a new swimsuit once I’m in LA for the beach and the YMCA pool.

For groceries I plan to just shop at my store since I would be working there anyway.

Should I get like a scooter or something light to travel around the beach? Just something small that I don’t have to worry about.

Thanks for reading.

Seeking support/help

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I wanted to share something here as I have nowhere else to write this. I have hit the rock bottom of my life.

I came to the US in 2023 and graduated in 2025. After much difficulty I landed a full time job this year in 2026, two months into the job, my role got terminated. I had relocated for this job, was very happy in life that finally things started working out. But now I'm back in the job market. I had signed the lease for my apartment for this new job which if I break I will have to pay two months rent as a fee plus have to give 60 days notice. I do not have any money in bank. Whatever I earned went in relocation, work authorization filing, etc. I am trying to find replacement but no luck. I have been applying rigorously, maybe got 1-2 calls in a month which ended saying they don't hire visa people anymore.

I don't have a family here. My friends moved to different places and are busy. I'm living in a remote area. I haven't gotten outside of my house since a month. I'm just trying to survive each day as I don't want to give up yet. I have education loan to payback and really worried about my family.

I would appreciate any help in this regard.
