Our most-broken and least-understood rules is "helpers may not invite private contact as a first resort", so we've made a new wiki to explain it

Upvotes

We understand that most people who reply immediately to an OP with an invitation to talk privately mean only to help, but this type of response usually leads to either disappointment or disaster. it usually works out quite differently here than when you say "PM me anytime" in a casual social context.

We have huge admiration and appreciation for the goodwill and good citizenship of so many of you who support others here and flag inappropriate content - even more so because we know that so many of you are struggling yourselves. We're hard at work behind the scenes on more information and resources to make it easier to give and get quality help here - this is just a small start.

Our new wiki page explains in detail why it's much better to respond in public comments, at least until you've gotten to know someone. It will be maintained at /r/depression/wiki/private_contact, and the full text of the current version is below.

Summary

Anyone who, while acting as a helper, invites or accepts private contact (I.e. PMs, chat, or any kind of offsite communication) early in the conversion is showing either bad intentions or bad judgement. Either way, it's unwise to trust them.

"PM me anytime" seems like a kind and generous offer. And it might be perfectly well-meaning, but, unless and until a solid rapport has been established, it's just not a wise idea. Here are some points to consider before you offer or accept an invitation to communicate privately.

  • By posting supportive replies publicly, you'll help more people than just the OP. If your responses are of good quality, you'll educate and inspire other helpers. The 1-9-90 rule applies here as much as it does anywhere else on the internet.

  • People who are struggling with serious mental-health issues often (justifiably) have a low tolerance for disappointment and a high-level of ever-changing emotional need. Unless the helper is able to make a 100% commitment to be there for them in every way, for as long as necessary, offering a personal inbox as a resource is likely to do more harm than good. This is why mental-health crisis-line responders usually don't give their names and callers aren't allowed to request specific responders. It's much healthier and safer for the callers to develop a relationship with the agency as a whole. Analogously, it's much safer and healthier for our OPs to develop a relationship with the community as a whole. Even trained responders are generally not allowed to work high-intensity situations alone. It's partly about availability, but it's mostly about wider perspective and preventing compassion fatigue.

  • If a helper gets in over their head with someone whose mental-health issues (including suicidality, which is often comorbid with depression) escalate, in a PM conversation it's much harder for others, including the /r/depression and /r/SuicideWatch moderators to help. (Contrary to common assumptions, moderators can't see or police PMs.)

  • In our observation over many years, the people who say "PM me" the most are consistently the ones with the least understanding of mental-health issues and mental-health support. We all have gaps in our knowledge and in our ability to communicate effectively. Community input mitigates these limitations. There's no reason why someone who's truly here to help would want to hide their responses from community scrutiny. If helpers are concerned about their own privacy, keep in mind that self-disclosure, when used supportively, is more about the feelings than the details, and that we have no problem here with the use of alt/throwaway accounts, and have no restrictions on account age or karma.

  • We all know the internet is used by some people to exploit or abuse others. These people do want to hide their deceptive and manipulative responses from everyone except their victims. There are many of them who specifically target those who are vulnerable because of mental-health issues. If a helper invites an OP to talk privately and gives them a good, supportive experience, they've primed that person to be more vulnerable to abusers. This sort of cognitive priming tends to be particularly effective when someone's in a state of mental-health crisis, when people rely more on heuristics than critical reasoning.

  • If OPs want to talk privately, posting on a wide-open anonymous forum like reddit might not be the best option. Although we don't recommend it, we do allow OPs to request private contact when asking for support. If you want to do this, please keep your expectations realistic, and to have a careful look at the history of anyone who offers to PM before opening up to them.

Check-In post, with essential info about our policies and resources. Most people are surprised by much of this information, please read carefully before posting or commenting

Upvotes

Welcome to /r/depression's check-in post - a place to take a moment and share what is going on and how you are doing. If you're having a tough time but prefer not to make your own post, or have an accomplishment you want to talk about (these aren't allowed standalone posts in the sub as they violate the "role model" rule), this is a place you can share.

Our subreddit rules are very different from most of the rest of reddit! Since all of them exist for important reasons, we ask everyone here to read and follow them. Please click 'report' on any harmful content you see here - we always want to know and deal as soon as we can.

We also have several resource wikis for help with finding and giving support:

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/what_is_depression provides guidance about what is and isn't a depressive disorder, guidance on the complex nature of the illnesses that are usually grouped under the "depression" label, and redirect information for common off-topic issues.

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/giving_help offers information on the nature and value of peer support for mental-health issues in general, and lots of guidance for learning what is -- and isn't -- usually helpful in giving peer support.

YSK that the types of rule violations that we most frequently see here are:

  • People breaking the private contact rule. You should never trust anyone who tries to get you into a private conversation in response to a post here. See https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/private_contact

  • "I'm here to help" posts. This shows that you don't understand the most basic principles of peer support, especially selectivity. The "giving help" wiki explains more about this.

  • Role modelling, i.e. "achievement" or "advice" posts. This is an expert-free zone -- that's what peer support means (rule 5). We know that "internet culture" celebrate not just bragging about your achievements but bragging about your intentions. Neither is ever acceptable here in any form.

  • Content that's more about 'making a statement' or casually polling the sub than seeking personal support (rules 1, 2 and 10).

  • Off-topic posts about difficult situations, including interpersonal issues. Grief, sadness, anger, loneliness and other difficult emotions are not mental illnesses. Feelings that can be explained by person's circumstances are perfectly healthy no matter how painful they are. A depressive disorder only exists when someone's mood is out of synch with what's going on for them. The "what is depression" wiki linked above has suggestions for other places to post about these issues, which are 100% valid and serious but do NOT belong here.

Have the whole day to enjoy myself and I still enjoy nothing

Upvotes

People don't understand how bad it is when you lose interest in the things you love. Losing interest is such a mild way to put it. I have the entire day to do anything I want, and all I want to do nothing. I did this yesterday and bedrotted and I felt worse for it. I even pushed myself to put on a movie and immediately zoned out. Opened my fave video games one after the other and closed them because I just don't have interest. The easiest forms of escape and fun seem like a chore. It's sad but the only thing that lights up my brain and passes the time is when I actually eat something - but even food doesn't have much flavor. I thought seeing a psych, getting meds and having weekly therapy would help but I'm still in this place. I hate it.

I'm just... done.

Upvotes

Im 27F. I have struggled with depression since I was 14. I simply cant do this anymore. For so long, I was living for my animals but its recently dawned upon me that they'd be much happier without me.

I was so close yesterday and I told my partner. He just belittled me, told me I was selfish, told me the things I was doing wrong. Threatened to find my location and call the cops and "enjoy a ride with my new friends". He didnt even tell me he loved me once and I was 40 minutes away, ready to end it. Something clicked in me to come back and say bye to my pets one last time and now the feeling of ending it is all back.

I cant do this anymore. I have no will.

Completely lost in life

Upvotes

Mid thirties male. In the last two years I've lost a lot and don't know how to cope or move forward.

10+ year relationship that didn't work out, had to sell our house, lost a lot of money.

Left my very high paying job because it was making me miserable. Fortunate to still be employed but counting the days until AI replaces me and I get laid off.

I used to love my work, it's boring and unfulfilling now. I used to love gaming, I don't play anything anymore.

I don't have any strong friendships with people I see on a regular basis. I only have interest in pursuing romantic relationships.

Finally met someone I wanted to seriously date and accidentally ruined it after only a couple of months over a misunderstanding.

I have a side business that's about to be able to start generating decent profits, but I've lost interest in that too. It's become burdensome to manage while also working my day job.

I've lost interest in saving money, I don't see the point. I was happier when I had less of it. Have started to think there's no point to save for retirement since I'd rather live fast and die young.

I wake up early and don't know what to do, so go running and go out to eat to pass time. I've started to do things earlier throughout the day and sleep earlier because I just want the day to end.

I fill my days with doom scrolling, mobile chess, porn, running, and listening to music. I work from home most of the time because I feel sad and anxious in the office around other people. I have no desire to socialize with my coworkers.

My pets are my only reason I keep going. I love them, and want to outlive them at least. I live alone but am lucky to have them for company.

There are glimpses of positivity where I try to count my blessings, but the overwhelming amount of time I just wish it would all end.

Thanks for reading

I hate being dumb

Upvotes

My mind is blank, thoughts feel like mostly empty space with dumb information coming through. Mostly feels like intense fog. Other people get an answer to a question or opinion to a topic much faster than i can. My shit memory isn’t helping me either, i’m constantly late on just about everything and always forget something the exact moment after the interaction i got that information from. And due to my clumsiness i spilled water on my laptop about a month ago and i’m a 3rd world peasant so i need my uncle’s assistance in getting the tools i need to make sure it isn’t damaged long-term. I even get bullied for my lack of intelligence in school, it’s a common topic among a few of my classmates, and they even infantilize me. One of them goes out of their own way to talk to me with a baby voice when they do interact with me. I’m considering testing reincarnation to possibly get a life where i’m actually smart and useful, have a strong social circle and have someone who can look me in the eye and tell me they love me. I fucking hate this life and i would go through torture to not be a subhuman failure.

36 and I genuinely don’t know how much longer I can cope with the intensity of this

Upvotes

I’ve posted before about my mental health, but things have become considerably worse recently. I’m mainly posting because I need to hear from people who’ve actually been somewhere remotely similar and found something that genuinely helped.

I’m 36. About 10 months ago my relationship of nine years broke down. She was genuinely my best friend and the proverbial “one” for me. We constantly laughed together and I genuinely thought we’d spend our lives together.

At the same time, there were little bursts of what I experienced as narcissistic behaviour and compulsive lying throughout the relationship, rather than it suddenly appearing at the end. Over the years the balance became ridiculous. I ended up paying all the bills, buying all the food, doing basically all the housework and getting virtually no contribution, while somehow still being made to feel like I wasn’t doing enough. Despite working 80 hour weeks and living off about 4 hours sleep to get everything done.

Towards the end things became even more confusing. Someone who previously barely went anywhere suddenly started disappearing for hours, became secretive with her phone and wouldn’t tell me who she was with. If I questioned things that didn’t add up, I was controlling or abusive. If I didn’t question them, I felt like a fucking idiot for putting up with behaviour that clearly didn’t feel right.
I’m not pretending I was perfect. My mental health deteriorated badly and I became angry and frustrated at times. That’s part of what fucks with my head now — I can’t separate what was genuinely my fault, what was a reaction to years of what was happening, and what I should or shouldn’t have tolerated.

And it wasn’t even a clean breakup. For roughly the next six months I was repeatedly told it wasn’t necessarily over, that we were “working on ourselves” and we’d do something together “when the time is right.” I believed that. I spent about five months trying to better myself partly because I genuinely thought we were working towards another chance, only for her to ultimately end it anyway.

So although technically the relationship broke down around 10 months ago, I haven’t had 10 months of actually accepting that it was finished.

From the second I wake up it’s memories, guilt, regrets, conversations, things I should have done differently and endless what ifs.
It doesn’t fucking stop.

Recently even sleep has stopped being an escape. I’ve started having incredibly vivid nightmares involving the same memories, fears and regrets. I wake up sweating, heart racing and exhausted, and then the daytime rumination immediately starts again. I’ve also been having severe panic attacks.

A lot of the time now when I genuinely don’t want to be here because the intensity of being inside my own head feels unbearable. I don’t necessarily want to die — I desperately want this to fucking stop. But when it gets intense enough, that distinction can feel frighteningly small.

My basic self-care has basically disappeared as well. I barely eat, I don’t wash properly, I don’t look after myself and, if I’m being truthful, I just don’t care anymore. Things that should be automatic feel completely pointless. I can still force myself through work and the things I absolutely have to do, but when it comes to looking after myself I’ve basically stopped.

I’ve spent the last week trying to get professional help and somehow I’ve come away feeling even more hopeless.

I tried NHS Talking Therapies and was told I wasn’t eligible. When things got particularly bad I reached out for crisis support and, after explaining how severe things had become, some of the advice I came away with was essentially have a cup of tea and go for a walk.

I finally saw my GP, who didn’t seem to have any information from the other services, meaning I had to explain everything yet again.

I’ve taken antidepressants before, including sertraline, without them helping. I’ve now essentially been given sertraline again because it’s an easy thing for them to prescribe and sent on my way.

At the moment I don’t want to go down the medication route again. I’m also an HGV driver,

I need to work and I can’t afford to simply take weeks away from my job while trying to sort my head out.
Then there’s the loneliness.

I’m 36 and virtually everybody I know has wives, husbands, partners, children and families. They’ve built their lives while it feels like mine has disappeared.

I don’t have a proper support network. I don’t have a group of mates I can call when being alone with my own head becomes unbearable, and I don’t have meaningful support at work either. I work, come home and I’m basically left with my own thoughts again.

So rather than listing things I’ve considered and having people simply agree with them, I want to leave this completely open:

If you’ve genuinely been somewhere like this, what actually helped you?

What did you actually do that made a noticeable difference? How did you stop analysing the past every waking minute? How did you rebuild a life and support network in your 30s when everyone else seemed to already have theirs?

Most importantly, what turned the volume down when your own thoughts had become so relentless that you were exhausted from simply being conscious?
I’m not expecting Reddit to fix me. I just desperately need to hear from people who’ve actually been there and found something that genuinely helped.

Because right now every day I want to eat a shotgun shell

i'm getting better NSFW

Upvotes

i was hospitalized about a year ago for suicidal ideation. i was on the brink of ending my life and i felt like i wasn't in control of my body. it was traumatic and scary but i made it through that experience even though i had to lie to the psych nurses about not feeling suicidal anymore so they could let me out.

since then, i graduated from college, got a full-time job, maintained my relationship with my partner, and found the right medication (thank god for welbutrin). i didn't know medication could work like this, and i didn't know i could get to a point in my life where i can see the future more clearly. i used to feel like everything was blank and pointless, and now i actually care.

Sleeping for weeks at a time

Upvotes

I wish could sleep for days or weeks at a time. Dreaming and sleeping are like the most peaceful things ever. When dreaming I feel as I am neither happy or sad. Its comforting and I think that its the only time I don‘t feel sad. I wouldn’t want to completely end my life but basically take a long pause.

I’m sorry for being alive another day…

Upvotes

I’m sorry for waking up. I’m sorry for not having a job for 2 years and not making money and contributing and being successful in anything. I’m sorry for being overweight. I’m sorry to my wife for being a failure. I’m sorry I’ve let everyone down. I’m sorry for not meeting your expectations. I’m sorry for being a video game addict. I’m sorry for not able to end myself. I’m sorry for wishing I’d have cancer or other death disease so theres no need to explain to family. I’m sorry for breathing your air, sorry for drinking your water, sorry for eating your food. I’m sorry your resources are wasted on me.

Sorry being alive did not make your world a better place, perhaps being dead will.

Sadness is an addiction.

Upvotes

For years i’ve had to ban all media forms of sadness. Music, films, books, tv shows, forums; all of them I can’t touch otherwise I’ll immediately start spiralling.

One summer I spent solely listening to radiohead’s saddest songs. I would fall asleep and wake up to it every morning and obviously that didn’t help my situation at all, but I couldn’t stop. For some reason, listening to sad music, watching sad films, reading people’s sad stories, became addictive. But all of it would just drag me further and further into a dark place.

I knew that’s what was happening. I knew that if i stopped interacting with it all, I might’ve felt better. But it felt good.

Now every-time I start to feel the ebbs of sadness creeping up, I am fighting with myself to not start that cycle. It’s even a trigger sometimes. Any radiohead song could come on and immediately i’ll have to turn it off or leave the room as I know what it can do.

It sounds ridiculous, but I can’t help it. As soon as I get a taste, I just want to sink myself further and further into it.

I don’t want to do this forever. I want to be able to listen to every song out there. Give me the whole of radiohead’s discography and not feel a thing. I want to live without the fear that one song, one film, one tv show, one book, one story, won’t drag me right back down

I’m more scared of the reality where that is what I want.

I’m completely isolated and the thoughts of ending my life are getting stronger

Upvotes

I don’t really know where else to say this, but I feel like I’m reaching a point where I don’t know how much longer I can keep going.
I feel like no therapist has ever really understood me. I’ve tried therapy multiple times, but it always feels like the same conversations over and over again, and nothing actually changes. At this point I’m even too exhausted to go back to therapy because part of me feels like, “What’s the point? I’ve already explained all of this so many times.”
I’m an immigrant, and my situation makes everything harder. I’ve had to distance myself from my family because of religious reasons, but it’s not as simple as just cutting them off and starting a new life. I’m living in a country where I still don’t completely feel like I belong, while going back to my home country doesn’t feel possible either. As a woman, I don’t feel like I could live the life I want there.
I’ve never had a boyfriend. I’ve never really had a true friend either. Most days I stay locked inside my apartment by myself. I doomscroll for hours, knowing that I’m wasting my life, but I can’t seem to make myself stop. I want to study, build a career, meet people and actually live, but I keep giving up before I even get started.
Recently things got even worse. I literally didn’t have anything to eat, so I went to a local restaurant. The looks, stares and insults I experienced there really affected me. And with the far-right gaining more support where I live, I feel increasingly scared that I won’t be accepted here either.
So now I feel trapped between two places. I don’t feel like I belong where I am, and I don’t feel like I can go back either.
And honestly, the thought of ending my life has been getting more and more frequent and urgent.
I don’t necessarily expect anyone here to have a solution. I think I just need to tell someone what is happening because I’ve been carrying this alone for too long.
If anyone has been in a similar place especially as an immigrant, someone who became estranged from their family for religious reasons, or someone who spent years completely isolated I would really like to hear how you got through it.

r/depression 3h ago

Literally the only reason I have not already attempted is the chance of failing.

Upvotes

Basically the title... If I knew for certain it would be successful, I would not be here anymore. I see a psychiatrist and just started seeing a psychologist, for my terrible anxiety and adhd, been struggling for years and nothing helps, every medicine just does nothing or makes it worse. Stimulants help somewhat but nowhere near enough to call myself functional. Like, just let me have easier access to a painless, and reliable way to make my own choice about being alive, why am I forced to continue living in a society that I am not compatible with and doesn't care enough about me to help me live with that being the case. I exist at this point to suffer, to look around me and be constantly reminded of what I will never experience and am unable to pursue, let alone attain. I feel so lost and out of place in this world, even if I do find medicines that work, I literally do not have the ability to imagine myself living normally, it gives me a feeling like if you kidnapped a person from one of those tribes that has no contact with the outside world and then just dropped him in an inner city somewhere, that os the closest way I can describe the feeling I get when I try to envision myself living normally within society.

I, 28f, am a survivor of corrosive control and a fundie cult. Ive been deconstructing for the past 10 years. I was told as a child to "be seen not heard." I was constantly belittled for being a young girl. It got so bad that I was a selective mute for years. Today someone made fun fo me for having a baby fundie voice. I know it's supposed to be small joke or point out, but Ive never been so hurt and hopeless over anything. I knew I was traumatized. I didn't know that it was so visible to the world. There is no masking. No running away. Only silencing myself, again. It's probably why so many people have been othering me. Its just heart breaking bc I dont try to do it. I dont know how to have a different voice and I fought so hard to have this one. My whole family doesnt talk to me anymore bc I no longer believe in their bullshit. But now. Im completely amd utterly alone in the world. My loneliness is informed and perpetuated by how my trauma changed me. Every group I am in, I am an outcast. Never fully accepted or trusted. I don't know what the point is anymore. (And no, I dont have money for a voice coach, etc). Please be kind. I'm already at the edge of dispare. Thank you for reading. If you did.

I'm Only Good For People As Long As They Can Get Something Out Of Me

Upvotes

Not sure if anyone else feels this. Within the last 10 years I have experienced more hurt and betrayal and just a general lack of empathy from almost everyone. Everyone tells me their problems and nobody checks on me. Girls have used me and thrown me away like a cheap shop rag. I have to be there for everyone and nobody is here for me. Im just tired. Everyone vents to me ans when I need someone everyone ia all of a sudden a ghost. And I try my best not to think everyone's just like this but honestly these last 10 years have been hell.

I’m sorry, you never deserved this pain

Upvotes

Hello reader,

You never deserved to carry such pain. To feel a world so hard and heavy.
You never deserved your unnecessary pain, a pain you try to express but one no understands

I know the world is dark and scary, and I know everything from your head to your toes hurts.

I know that you feel like you’re burdened.

I know how it feels to feel like you’re a disappointment

I’m sorry for you, I’m truly sorry.

I won’t sit here and tell you you “are loved” without knowing you are

But I am truly sorry for how much it hurts

You don’t deserve the pain

You never did
