How else am I supposed to get 150g of protein every day just in case I go to the gym this afternoon (for the first time in a year, for 20 minutes, to only run on the treadmill)
•
u/SkepsisJD 5h ago
Hey! I did that recently. Except it was the first time in 15 years and I was walking!

Just eat soybeans. They are pretty good. They taste mostly neutral but because your body craves the overdose of protein they taste better. And nothing like peas or red beans or whatever. Chickpeas are good too but only like 20% protein instead of 40%. Just soak dry soybeans overnight then cook for 3 hours and done. Super easy and dirt cheap.
You can even make them hyperpalatable (or for me at least) by breading them and adding onions, garlic, smoked paprika, salt and frying them with some healthy oil.

I was joking - though I am on a high protein diet (150 was an exaggeration - I aim for 90) with greek yoghurt for breakfast, a protein shake for lunch, and meal prepped dinners that aim for ~30g protein. I'm down 12kg since May.

If you have a blender, make a shake. Put some avocado, milk, and frozen berries. I have one everyday for the last year and it's delicious, feels like a treat every time.

I still don't get why so many people use a threadmill. Just go outside and run?
Edit: yes, obviously bad weather is a good reason, but I see the same amount of people on it during the best of weather.
•
u/sowinglavender 5h ago
personally i have a condition where i can abruptly run out of energy, so i like being able to stop and be in the same place i started instead of risking getting stranded. i used to just pass out on people's lawns but apparently that's impolite.
•
u/Heavy_Pea_7614 5h ago
The weather isn’t perfect everywhere in the world all the time? I live in Wisconsin and it snows for like 8 months out of the year
•
u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco 5h ago
It can depend on weather. Around here trying to run outside in the day is a good way to get heatstroke.
•
•
u/mr_pineapples44 5h ago
But then you don't get the stats, unless you use an app or a smartwatch. And sometimes it's raining or too hot out there.
•
u/WhiteSock_ 4h ago
I had knee surgery and a treadmill is a lot easier on my joints
•
u/TheChadStevens 4h ago
Because you can hold yourself up?
•
u/WhiteSock_ 4h ago
No, that would be a terrible running technique.
It’s just softer than concrete and perfectly even, without potholes and curbs.

•
u/nairdaleo 4h ago
It’s hot as balls outside, it’s cold as hell outside, it’s raining, gotta go uphill when I’m too tired, downhill isn’t helping the exercise at all… don’t get me wrong, I enjoy going out for long walks and hiking, but I can easily do 600 Cal on a treadmill indoors, in about half the time it takes to do it outside, it’s just much more efficient, and can be quite enjoyable: watch a bit of a movie/show/read book.

u/BLOODYRAIN10001 3h ago
Here there's no sidewalks or places to really get your run on unless you want to risk getting run over or drive some miles away to a trail.

This is just a branch of my patented Toothpaste Diet. It's easy: any time you a hankering, you brush your teeth. You'll still be hungry, but nobody has an appetite when they can still taste the toothpaste in their mouth.
•
u/greeneggiwegs 6h ago
Also if you brush your teeth too much, you won’t have teeth after a while, which will also make you eat less.
•
•
u/Cheezeball25 6h ago
That's quitter talk right there. I'll down an entire breakfast of pancakes and orange juice right after brushing my teeth with the mintiest toothpaste I can get. Skill issue
•
•
•
u/Mrs0Murder 6h ago
Look I literally had this exact thought earlier today.
Bored and wanting to eat? Maybe I should just brush my teeth instead. I'll be good for at least an hour.

I feel that this is inappropriate place to share that, for a brief period of time, Colgate had their own line of TV dinners. They did not do well.

I just made snickerdoodles with vanilla protein powder yesterday, pretty good

I make French toast or oatmeal with protein powder, and both turn out pretty good. You have to learn how to use it, and adjust recipes, and sometimes use different powders. I use chocolate powder for oatmeal, and plain whey for French toast. Both meals have like 35g of protein, and 400 and 600 calories, respectively, when I add all my other fixins. Lost 45 pounds, and gained good amount of muscle with this. (Also, eating at a deficit and working out, of course).
•
u/nik-nak333 4h ago
How do you add protein powder to French toast?
•
u/NRMusicProject 4h ago
I use the brand Raw Organic Whey (and I might be stopping since it's gone up like 30 bucks for the 5lb package in the last two years...and they can't even be assed to put it in a standard jar like most...just one of those bags with the questionable off-brand Ziploc that you can't trust), and it's 25g of the powder, 100g of milk, 1 egg, and 8g of sucralose. It's a little thicker and doesn't penetrate the bread, but I noticed a lower heat and a slow cook, like around 2 minutes on a side, it's quite pleasant.
I top with sugar free syrup, walnuts, and whatever fruit I have on hand. And on the topic of sugar free syrup, I have a friend who's proud of how "nothing gets by me in tasting, and I caught Pizza Hut's recipe change before they announced it." He had no clue which syrup I put on, but somehow he still repeats how he hates the taste of it.
I know a common way to make high protein French toast is using a shit ton of egg whites, but the protein powder is (and probably still is) cheaper.

Recommendation for this for me personally is a 3:1 mix. Ex. Recipe calls for 2 cups of pancake mix. Use 1.5 cups of pancake mix and .5 cups of protein powder. You won't even notice a difference.
•
u/TripleThreat1212 6h ago
One thing I’d add, is with whey protein they may come a bit thinner than you are used to. To fix this use a mix of whey and Casein which works great, but I understand not everyone will want to keep two types around
•
u/ZaraReid228 3h ago
Tried doing it with porridge and it was like I had poured a cup of sand in it. Even when I cooked it in and mixed it I could feel the individual protein powder grains inside of it. Might have to try pancakes next time.
•
u/Katrina_18 6h ago
What brand do you use? When I do that I feel like the texture of anything ends up so dry and dense and chalky.
•
u/SukiSilky 6h ago
Hmm worth a try
•
u/DontAskAboutMyButt 4h ago
Sometimes I make overnight oats with vanilla protein powder, oat milk, and vanilla Greek yogurt. Mix some peanut butter in the next morning and it tastes like peanut butter pie
•
•
u/Chamrockk 6h ago
Maybe get some good quality protein powders ? I do quarter banana + oats + vanilla protein power + one egg + little bit of salt + little bit of frozen blueberries + milk or water, mix everything for 1 min or so, it's quite good.
•
u/butt_shrecker 7h ago
The Kodiac pancakes are tasty and have a decent amount of protein
•
u/Knotted_Hole69 41m ago
All of them and I mean all of them taste like what i imagine indian cow shit tastes like.
•
u/FistThePooper6969 7h ago
So true, turns the pancakes into bricks with shitty artificial flavouring
•
u/ivorella 6h ago
Lmao my fiancee does this and actually does eat them
•
u/SukiSilky 6h ago
Gym bros are different
•
u/ivorella 6h ago
My fiancee isn't a gymbro, they're just careful about what they eat and can't get a lot of protein in apparently.
•
u/SnarkyIguana 6h ago
I started putting a little bit of protein powder in my morning coffee and it's actually pretty good. It's also cinnabon flavored though so I guess that helps lol
•
u/AuntRhubarb 5h ago
How much are you using, it's probably too much. Just use a few tablespoons, and maybe an extra egg, and call it a day.
•
u/gotaflattire 5h ago
Must have used a bad flavor or something because I've had good luck mixing protein powder into pancakes.
•
•
u/tacotickles 5h ago
Protein pancakes are one of the foods that actually taste essentially indistinguishable for the normal thing
•
u/Incelligentsia 4h ago
Vanilla Protein powder with instant coffee and milk. Make it strong and you would hardly be able to smell or taste the protein powder.
•
u/thatwentBTE 4h ago
Dude, everyone is so obsessed with protein intake. It's crazy. You shouldn't need to supplement your protein if you eat a balanced diet. The same way that you do not have to have meat every meal, you do not need protein every meal.
•
u/touristssyndrome 3h ago
glp1's change the calculus - reduced caloric intake means higher percentage of protein is needed to reduce muscle loss with the weight loss
•
u/HappyPlatypus6034 3h ago
I'm working on losing weight and need it to make me feel fuller for longer. I usually just put a lot in a smoothie though

WE NEED FIBER LMAO. I will never understand the protein craze and how it’s lived for this long
•
u/the_drum_doctor 3h ago
I always fry my kale in avocado oil - it makes it easier to scrape into the garbage can.
•
u/Simon_Drake 1h ago
There's an advert with a woman saying how delicious her protein powder is. "Its a high protein, organically sourced, all natural beef (pause) organ blend" because if she said "beef organ" while pouring the powder into a chocolate milkshake it would make people vomit. That's nasty as fuck. Ground up offal and spare cow livers and kidneys all dried into a powder and put into your breakfast? That's disgusting.
