Literally cried so much.
Idk if I cried more at end of whisper of the heart or when Marnie was there, but it’s definitely a tear jerker. Lots of emotional buildup and slow but sure character development but god that credit scene was just too much for me to handle I had to take ibuprofen I got a headache from crying too much

I just watched it for the first time and I REALLY LOVE THIS ONE. I went in not knowing much about it and was not expecting to hit me like that hard!

The whole movie has such a good vibe. The house, the water, the summer setting, all of it! It’s cozy but also kinda sad at the same time. But i want to live in a house like that someday. Its like a dream.

I’m honestly surprised I waited this long to watch it. Go watch it if you haven't yet!

I’ve seen Princess Mononoke, Spirited away and Howls.
Nausicaa? Totoro? Ponyo? I also noticed some praise for when Marnie was here. But I’m leaning towards Nausicaa. I love love to know the community’s opinion.

Flowers are obviously prominent in most Studio Ghibli films but in Kiki’s Delivery Service it’s taken to a rather lovely extreme. I’m curious whether these are symbolic devices placed by the studio or if it’s just part of the society the story is based on. And for those who have read the book and may know more, please chime in! My current theory is that heavy flower presence is a symbol indicating people who love/accept Kiki but there is one major hole in this theory I’ll mention.

I’ll explain more:

Obviously there are the breathtaking nature and exterior shots we all know and love, but even in interiors, when you pay close attention, many of the wallpapers and objects have floral designs. This is clearest in the early scenes in and around Kiki’s childhood house and bedroom. The house itself is literally covered in leaves/ivy/foliage with flowers blooming along the house’s exterior walls (seen when Kiki opens her window to talk to her dad). Then the stunning garden room where Kiki’s mother works is obviously teeming with plant life (I want a house like this so f*cking badly btw but anyway back to the post). Then in her bedroom the wallpaper is a floral design, many objects have floral painted patterns, many picture frames have paintings/photos of flowers and of course there are many flowers in vases. Then when Kiki is embarking on her voyage, and the town is there to see her off, almost every single frame there is a flower visible at least in the background. In fact until she takes off, there is a flower visible in almost every single frame other than a few shots of the sky. Regarding my theory of flowers/plants resembling love for Kiki’s, this is her home and comfort zone where everyone knows and loves her, and it’s teeming with flower/plant life.

Then she gets to the new town. It’s not any type of town, it’s the equivalent of a dense city where there is very little nature at all at first, dense urban concrete everywhere. Yes a few plants outside windows though. Kiki is a stranger in a new place and no one knows her or loves her yet. But the few people who meet her in the town, and love her, how flowers all over the interiors of their home: Osono has floral patterns on a lot of the mugs and cups and vases of flowers. The lovely old lady as well. The first customer as well at the destination (floral wall papers and carpets that Jiji plays on with the dog). Even Tombo’s interior, when they show him calling Kiki on the phone, has a distinct floral wallpaper.

There are only two settings/shots in the entire movie that are completely absent of some sort of nature (flower/plant/grass): the attic she moves into (but she has a vase in every shot after her first day) and Ursula’s cabin. Maybe the train cart if you don’t count the hay. But Ursula totally accepts Kiki as much as anyone, but her cabin interior is oddly completely devoid of flowers, not even a vase. I even think her painting was absent of flowers/plants but I could be wrong. Yes the surrounding area is a forest and the immediate yards of her cabin have flowers. So the Ursula cabin interior is a place where the theory has a massive hole in it. Maybe it’s intentional for the visual contrast to make it seem completely cut off from society.

But the Ghibli style, of hand drawing every single frame, is too meticulous to believe the “it’s not that deep bro” explanation without any examination at all.

What are your thoughts on this theory? Is it merely the style of the setting and if I visited the town in 1989 I would see that same style? Is it just the Ghibli vibe of flowers? Or do you think there is a deeper symbolism where there are and aren’t flowers/plants? And if you’ve connected similar dots in other Ghibli films of course I’d love to hear about it.

My Blu-ray+DVD combo of The Boy and the Heron came with these little inserts that I was really surprised to get!

Does the steelbooks come with anything like these, maybe from GKids store? Is it only the Blu-ray/DVD box sets?

Just rewatched the movie, and I'm confused, there's a scene where Mahito is talking to his Great Granduncle near the magic stone, and then all of a sudden, he's just captured at the bottom of the parakeet kingdom. Um, what? How the heck did that happen?

First time painting anything like this, or even painting on a big canvas in general, so imperfect paintings but feel very hearty; I'm excited to give them to friends; wanna give credits to both the people who originally made these/ provided inspo and tutorials!

For some reason, no matter what. I see myself liking Castle In The Sky more than ANY other Ghibli movie.

It’s not nostalgia, or any sentimental value, it’s just I find Castle In The Sky to be superior to films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Maybe it’s because of the beautiful scenery or the explosions but I love Castle In The Sky.

For the past year, I’ve been on a huge Ghibli binge, especially last summer, when I decided to watch every single Studio Ghibli movie.

It’s become a personal goal of mine to watch every Ghibli movie while Hayao Miyazaki is still alive. I know that sounds weirdly morbid, but it’s just my way of honoring him while I still can. That way, whenever that day eventually comes, I’ll feel like I’ve experienced his work and can properly mourn him.

I’ve now watched every single Ghibli movie except these three:

Ocean Waves
Tales from Earthsea
Earwig and the Witch

I’ve heard from multiple places online that these are considered some of the worst Ghibli movies and that they’re not really worth watching.

For a while, I was on the fence about whether I should watch them or not. Since my goal was to see every Ghibli movie, I was originally going to watch them anyway.

But at the last minute, I decided not to.

And for an entire year, I haven’t watched or even attempted to watch any of them.

Now I’ve come to Reddit to ask my fellow Ghibli fans:

What do you think? Are these movies worth watching just to complete the goal, or should I leave it at the movies I’ve already seen?

I’d especially love to hear from people who have actually watched all three. Are they really as bad as people say, or are they worth giving a chance?

Hello. I'm primarily addressing the Russian-speaking community. I've been searching for a physical, printed copy of "When Marnie Was There" from Azbuka Publishing for a very long time. Finding it on any available retail platforms is currently impossible—it's either literally out of stock, or they're asking exorbitant prices for it. As far as I know, there won't be any more print runs from the Russian publisher, so it won't be back in stores. I'm currently in Belarus. I'm holding on to one last shred of hope—maybe I'll get lucky, maybe a miracle will happen, and someone here might have this book sitting on their shelf, willing to sell it for a reasonable price. Even if that's unlikely, I'd be very grateful for any leads. I don't know if it's even possible to get it.
