I’ve seen Princess Mononoke, Spirited away and Howls.
Nausicaa? Totoro? Ponyo? I also noticed some praise for when Marnie was here. But I’m leaning towards Nausicaa. I love love to know the community’s opinion.

Nausicaa is a classic for sure. If you enjoyed the three you mentioned idk why you wouldn’t enjoy that one as well

I usually do Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke as a double feature, then do castle in the sky/howls as a double feature part two. Tales from Earth Sea is great too. Tim Dalton does the VA in the English dub if I remember right.

I’m going to throw out the idea that, if you plan to watch Grave of the Fireflies, watch it early. It’s not an easy watch, I’d say it’s quite upsetting, but it sets the table for the post-war trauma that is pervasive throughout the 2 main Ghibli directors’ works. If you do watch it, I’d recommend blocking off a pretty large chunk of time and double billing it with one of the more uplifting Ghibli movies, like Totoro or Ponyo.

If you enjoyed Princess Mononoke, you'll probably like Nausicaä. It's my favorite Ghibli film, maybe favorite movie PERIOD, and established many of the themes seen in Hayao Miyazaki's later works. The manga is incredible too.

Totoro, Ponyo, and Kiki are all very wholesome.

Nausicaa and Porco Rosso are more action packed, but less so than Princess Mononoke.

I recommend all of these.

The Cat Returns is also goofy and fun.

Nausicaa is closest to princess mononoke, and I think you should also watch when marnie was there and Isao Takahata films. He made Grave of the fireflies, which is one of the best movies ever made (but make sure you are ready for it) and he also made only yesterday which is fantastic, and quite possible the best film humanity has ever created: the tale of the princess kaguya. But Marnie, Tortoro, and Ponyo are amazing picks to start anyone off with. But I think Kiki's delivery service might be the best to watch next!!

The Boy and The Heron is one of the best animated films of all time IMO.

But, many Ghibli fans are split on it. Seems people either love it or rate it near the bottom.

My next fave is Kiki’s Delivery Service, but quick PSA, I’ve heard Nausicaa has a much better sub than dub! (And maybe the reason it’s not in my top 3 is because I’ve only seen the dub. Haha)

Also new to Ghibli! So far I've watched Spirited Away (2x) and Howl's Moving Castle - both good, but I liked Spirited Away more. I've started watching Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa and so far neither of them have hooked me like the first two - I've actually paused both just shy of the 40 minute mark. I've heard lots of good things about Princess Mononoke though, so I'll probably watch that next!

Totoro. About once a month for a year until you know all the goings out and comings in. Cat bus, tree pulling, soot sprites, Mei! Mei!, the food, Grandma, snoozing on Totoro, the music, the credits,... It is elemental.

Boy and the Heron is THE BEST one. It’s my favourite, too. I think it’s the perfect summary of the themes Miyazaki likes to explore. Only in this movie, Miyazaki is able to fully reach what he was trying to say in Spirited Away, Howls, Mononoke, Totoro.

The previous movies didn’t leave as much of an impression on me as the Boy and The Heron. This is just my opinion, of course.

Whisper of the Heart and Kiki’s Delivery Service are hidden gems and great comfort watches. They’re less epic than the ones you mentioned, but still contain a lot of wisdom and heart.
