Discussion Only yesterday broke me

Literally cried so much.
Idk if I cried more at end of whisper of the heart or when Marnie was there, but it’s definitely a tear jerker. Lots of emotional buildup and slow but sure character development but god that credit scene was just too much for me to handle I had to take ibuprofen I got a headache from crying too much

I'm almost 50 and it's my favourite movie. it's been mentioned here a few times that it seems to resonate stronger with older generations.

Regardless of how old you are, it's a wonderful movie.

The end didn't make me cry directly, but it did lead me to reflect on my childhood later on, and I cried from the nostalgia

It is those typical movie that " not that special when you are young,but feeling a lot and even cry when you are getting older"😔😔Just like spirited away which is the tearjerker to me after I grown up.
Whisper of the heart is great too but I didn't cry to it bc I treat as pure love story and in fact it is one of the first few movie that help me establish the "dream love' model😆

Whisper of the Heart is my second favorite Ghibli movie ever, but Only Yesterday might be top 5 too. The ending on my most recent watch definitely had me crying, it might be my favorite ending scene in one of these movies

Top 3 Ghibli for me. It's less popular on this subreddit, because this subreddit skews young. It's about nostalgia and maturity, not romance or adventure. You need to be at least late 20s to appreciate it IMO.
