Is this job worth my health?

Upvotes

I recently started a job a few months ago. Ever since I’ve clocking between 60-100 hours every week with average of 70hrs per week. Im completely burnt out. My health has turned to shit just over the span of these 4-5 months. Im micromanaged about 60-70% of those hours because my desk is right in front of the managers where he monitors everything i do and whats on my screen. He is constantly checking my gps, and everyone’s gps wherever we go. I think im at my ends Witt’s in such a short period i developed depression and my anxiety is through the roof, poor sleep, poor eating. I have’nt had any time to excercise since i started and have gained a lot of weight. Im not sure if the pay is worth i either even though im getting 120k per year its because of the hours im doing not the pay rate. The standard full time hours is 40hrs per week, so if i was paid 120k for a normal full time position it might be worth it but I’m doing double that each week so my guess is I’m only really making $60-70k per year if i was working normal hours.

Advice Will this get me into research?

Upvotes

[USA] I’m currently a student at my local community college working towards completing an AA transfer plan in psychology. My goal is to transfer to the university near me, pursue a BA in psychology with a minor in biology and a concentration in advanced research, and try my best to get into their Cognition, Neuroscience, and Social Psychology graduate program.

I’m in my third semester now, and with 4 semesters left of my associate’s, I’ve been accepted into the honors program which gives me a chance to join the undergraduate research experience and present research at the symposium. I’ve looked into joining Phi Theta Kappa’s honor society as well. I plan to receive the Honors Laureate designation before my transfer, and continue with honors at the university. I have 3 letters of recommendation from professors so far.

I have also applied to work in the natural sciences lab in my community college as a dish washer.

My goal is to work in research. Whether it be academia, government, medical, it doesn’t matter to me quite yet. Psychology research is the goal.

Any advice or pointers are much appreciated.

Can I change start date on the day of?

Upvotes

After months of searching I’ve finally found a job and sept 8 is my start date.

Unfortunately it so happens that I’m currently sitting in a pool of my own blood on the bathroom and have been profusely throwing up for the past three hours with chills, and really low blood pressure and blood sugar. (I have an endometriosis and am having a flareup)

My flareup started yesterday morning and I quickly deteriorated from there. I can’t walk rn and the nausea is so severe i highly doubt I can get to a full day of work. Given my history of hemorrhaging from severe blood loss I think I’ll end up at the ER if I get worse.

I really really need this job financially, will I jeopardize keeping it by calling out literally on the day of my start date?

Advice How do you hang on in a job until you’re ready to move on?

Upvotes

I’m struggling because I travel for work. I’ve started to cry for the day leading up to the travel. It’s every week. But I have a family to support, so I can’t just leave.
This amount of travel is making my life feel so disjointed. I miss my kids and my husband.
However, I don’t have a solid step forward to something different and I feel there’s a lot that I will have left unfinished if I just leave. I like to finish what I start and there’s a solid end to a season i could finish out with a more solid plan for myself and tying up loose ends at the job.
My mental health is just struggling and I want to leave sooner. How do I persevere til then?

How can I realistically build a career in industry with cognitive psychology background?

Upvotes

Background:

Cognitive psychology MSc and PhD Year 1.

My current work focuses more on vision and memory, so I have skills like eye tracking, R, data analysis, research ethics. I have had some conference presentations and working on a publication so I haven't yet totally failed as a student. I have the normal experiences all grad students have, like TAs and such, but not much experience outside of school.

I am open to learning more skills, but hope not to get another degree unless absolutely necessary because a degree is very costly.

Question:

I know for a fact professorship is not for me and I am unlikely to get one. Therefore, I would like to know is there any field I can reasonably transfer into in the industry? I have looked into health information analyst, program evaluation roles, ed tech roles and ux researcher roles. However, I don't know where to start because I don't have industry experience or relevant degree. I am open to any and all relevant advices, especially from people who transitioned out of psychology.

Advice How realistic is it to get a job in Europe while applying from India?

Upvotes

I’m currently looking to move to Europe and want to understand how realistic it is to secure a job while applying from India, rather than moving first.

I have around 1 year of experience as a Technical Business Analyst and 6 months of experience as a Fraud Analyst at a Big 4. My experience is mainly in business/data analysis, fraud-related work, SQL, data analysis, and working with business and technical teams.

For people who have successfully made a similar move from India:

- Which European countries are currently the most realistic for this profile?
- Is it better to apply directly to European companies, use LinkedIn/Indeed/other job portals, or approach recruiters?
- How difficult is it to get visa sponsorship with relatively low YOE?
- Are there particular industries or types of companies that are more open to hiring candidates from outside the EU?
- Should I target Business Analyst, Data Analyst, Fraud Analyst, or similar roles?

I’d particularly appreciate advice from people who have moved from India to Europe through a job offer or have experience hiring internationally.

Any practical advice on which countries/roles to target and how to approach the job search would be really helpful.

Advice What should I do? (16 UK M)

Upvotes

For Context I’m 16, Just finished my GCSEs and about to start Level 1 Electrical Installation at College
My GCSE Results:
Sports Studies-8
English Language & Literature 6
Geography 6
Business 6
Hospitality & Catering 6
Maths 5
Science 4/4. (So I passed everything)

Is a trade the way to go? Especially Electrical Installation. I feel if I did A levels I would do criminology, English Lang, Sports in the hopes of becoming a sports Journalist and would have to go an get a degree for that but by the time I get my degree, AI would
Of had a massive effect on that as-well as the pay is pretty low. So is electrical installation the way to go despite even if in 2 years I have my level 1 and 2 qualifications but may want to be something else I have these qualifications to fall back on. Am I making the right choice?

Advice I'm getting ghosted by my supervisor - should I keep calling?

Upvotes

I had a job as an assistant in a music studio, practically run by 1 composer. The way it normally worked was he'd call me when he needed help with a project and I'd do whatever there was to do - which normally was a lot and ranged from paperwork to doing his own composition work when he wasn't feeling it.

we didn't have a written agreement but I was getting paid whenever there was work. at some point he stopped receiving as many projects due to war and also I had to take care of my now-ex go through surgeries so we weren't calling eachother as often.

ever since that;

  • Ceasefire happened
  • June 11th he called and said he needs me, I said I'll be there and the next day he cancelled it himself. June 20th I texted him, he said he's volunteering for a couple weeks.
  • July 20th, I called twice, he didn't pick up.
  • July 29th, I texted, asking if something's wrong, no response.
  • August 7th I replied to his story on instagram, he said "hi - I had severe back pain for a month - I've been offside". I asked if he's seen a doctor yet but, no response.
  • August 25th, I called once, he didn't pick up.

I feel like I'm just bothering him at this point. I suppose it is unprofessional to ghost someone you're working with but, he's normally really respectful so I'm a bit surprised. and I don't even mind being broke, side-gigs and saving sorta keep me alive- I can still afford to wait.

should I keep calling? text? forget about it? ask our colleagues if something's up? try to be friendly? professional? honestly I'd do anything for this job. I worked hard to get it.

thank you in advance.

How do I let go of the fear of getting a new opportunity?

Upvotes

I got into banking as a teller in March of this year, and lately I’ve noticed that my lifestyle has started to feel a little too comfortable. I know banking can help me financially, and it’s a good, clean, stable job. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing bad about it, but at the end of the day it still feels like a regular 9 to 5, and there’s not much excitement to it.

When I left my previous 9 to 5, I decided to pursue real estate. The problem was that I felt like I was doing all the dirty work for my brokerage and the rest of the team without really building my own name or business. It started to feel like I was everyone’s puppet instead of actually creating something for myself.

Now I have another job opportunity in solar sales, and I’m seriously considering leaving banking to pursue it. What attracts me to solar is that you actually have to grind for your money, and I kinda miss that feeling. At the same time, part of me likes the comfort and stability I have now. When I was unemployed and doing real estate, I barely made any money. spent a lot of time and effort going to inspections and helping with different things, and I don’t even think I got paid for most of it. So I’m stuck between missing the grind and appreciating the security I have now. Any advice?

Advice Big 4 or Mid tier in house lawyer role which one would you choose?

Upvotes

I'm an inhouse lawyer at an energy company.(1 year) (It is not a global brand like EY, EY looks better in CV) Got an EY offer (Tax/Corporate Law, Senior-2) — better brand, hybrid work, but ~15% lower net pay and confirmed heavy overtime culture (weekends, midnight hours). My current company countered with a 30%+ raise to keep me... I have a mortgage and want stability for the next 5 years. Everyone I know is shocked that I'm leaning toward staying. Am I making a mistake, or is turning down "Big 4 prestige" for more money and stability in my current company actually the smart move here?

Where do I apply for the position where you press the button to open doors for people?

Upvotes

Hi, I think I would be a great candidate to manage a door system. I can tell when people are going to walk in my door from a mile away. I also have a bachelors in ornithology so I should be qualified. However I can’t seem to find the position at any of my local supermarkets. Does anyone know what the word for this profession is so I can find it more easily? Thank you.

Education & Qualifications Need genuine career advice?

Upvotes

I completed my BA in 2023. After that, I joined a paramedical course but left it after around 2 years. Now I’m really confused about what to do next.

I want to build my career in the IT sector, but I’m not sure which path is realistic for someone from a non-CS background.

I’m considering:

AI Engineer

Generative AI/LLM Engineer

Software Developer

Data Analyst

Or any other IT role you’d suggest

I’m willing to learn and put in the required time. I just don’t want to make another wrong career decision.

Please give me some genuine advice based on your experience. What path would you recommend and where should I start?

Advice Does anyone have any advice for a 29 y/o college grad feeling lost/behind?

Upvotes

Hi folks, it’s a bit of a long story. I went back to school late and graduated last year (May 2025) with two degrees, one in Emergency Management and the other in political science. Initially I went into emergency management as an alternative to political science, with the goal of going into Homeland Security afterwards. Somewhere along the line I turned a minor in a second degree (poli-sci), this time with the goal of going into the federal civil service.

Well in the last year I’ve admittedly held off on job hunting due to the chaos within the government and just did a bunch of side adventures. Now with 30 around the corner, the need to find a proper job is becoming more apparent but I’m now questioning whether I really want to pursue my previous career goals. I’m just feeling lost at the moment, with one degree that I wish I didn’t pursue and another that I’m unsure where to go with. I feel like I’m well behind most around my age, or some even younger.

Advice Should I do something meaningful or something I find interesting/enjoyable?

Upvotes

Basically, I need to make a lot of college decisions soon. and I’m torn between two large choices. something meaningful to me that would make my career feel important is to work with animals, like conservation-related areas. but pretty much no job in that field pays well, and I’m not certain my interest would last more than 10 years (I’m pretty good at science, but I don’t really enjoy it). Also I’ve heard most jobs relating to animals are not as amazing as they seem (apparently problems with nepotism, favoring people who come from wealthy backgrounds, being hard to ‘move up the ladder’, etc). The other thing I could do is advertising, because I love design, solving problem/coming up with ideas, and other general stuff involved with that career area. However I don’t feel that it would be meaningful at all. Most people hate ads, and it’s rare when ads actually do something good for society.

I don’t know, maybe I should find meaning outside of my job? like continue with volunteering as an adult? any advice would be great. thanks

Advice what is your job advice for afterwork?

Upvotes

Hi,

I’m (W25) currently employed in an office job and have been thinking about doing this after work. I have decent connections in the adult industry, but I’ve never dared to take the plunge until now. Do you think it’s still worth it, or is the market already oversaturated? What would you recommend?

Given my resume, what should I do?

Upvotes

September 2025-Present- I’ve been taking classes to apply to ABSN programs but I need a fallback plan. I do not have these courses on my resume as I believe it would raise questions.

Jan 2025 - September 2025 - business operations associate at startup.
Here, I had tasks in office management, compliance, Bizops, investor relations and HR. Got burnt out quickly, was threatened with a PIP.

Aug 2024-Oct 2024 - professional development contract employee at top law firm
Short contract, just helped them welcome new attorneys and log CLE hours

Nov 2022 - March 2024 - office coordinator at hedge fund
Dabbled in admin tasks, had mostly reception and office management duties.

May 2022 BA in English

I really wanted to break into communications and media after college but that never happened. I feel like my college internships which were art related are irrelevant now.

I do not want to be an executive assistant unless that leads to different roles. What would you suggest I do?

I am 28 and live in a VHCOL area and would like something that can help me live comfortably. That is a main reason why I am pursuing nursing. It will take 2 years. I am applying to nursing schools this winter, but want to see what my options are. Should I stay the course, or pivot again? I don’t want to come across as someone who can’t make up their mind.

Advice If you were a manager with an employee you felt was useless, how would you prefer them to quit?

Upvotes

I want to hear from managers/bosses who has an employee that wasn’t performing well and you were gearing up to send them in their way out. Like you were not happy with anything they have done the last 30 days and the last day of work was spent riding their butt. Not always a person facing role, lots a behind the scenes work then meetings and some presentations. Mostly remote.

Would you be relieved if they quit the next work day? Would you want them to still give two weeks even though the hiring process for this role takes at least a month? Would you want them there a month if you didn’t like their work anyway? What if they had everything they were working on laid out ready to pass on? Would you even want to see them again after giving their resignation?

Curious if you’ve been in this situation as a manager.

What should I do with my career? Feeling completely lost at 23

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I could really use some advice!!.

I live in the US and I always thought I wanted to go to med school, but after doing some clinicals, I realized I didn’t really enjoy it. I’m currently pursuing a business degree but had to pause because of finances.
Lately, I’ve become interested in possibly going into law and taking the LSAT, but I have no pre-law background and honestly don’t know where to start.

I’m also not a U.S. citizen, so financial aid/scholarship options are limited, and I’m currently waiting on my asylum decision.

I know I’m only 23, but I feel so lost and behind because I used to be so sure about my future. 🥺
Should I explore law, and what LSAT resources would you recommend for a complete beginner?

Edit with your location Career advice for 26 year old?

Upvotes

Hi All,

Feeling so lost 26 male. I hate my Desk job and i don't want to move up the ladder pay is shit and i feel like most of the job at my company will get replaced by Ai in the next few years, honestly im counting days to be able to leave.

Been thinking about Join Air force and doing my electrical apprenticeship while getting the army benefits and a new experience in life, as i couldn’t land an apprenticeship in Melbourne. I don’t care too much about making insane money i just want a career I’m proud of.

Saying that what career path do you recommend for someone who enjoys being out door and in the sun and working with my hands i don’t really enjoy talking to people a lot.

Someone others i have considered besides electrical is either roofing, fencing, Arborist ( crazy low pay) and landscaping but landscaping seems so saturated and not enough of money to be able to support my self.

I thought at 26 i would have things figured out but i don’t while everyone around me has already started their graduate jobs and moving up. I have Diploma in counseling but couldn’t land a job for a year kinda gave up as you need to go back to uni to do master and ….

Advice How do I find my career path when none of my internships have felt right?

Upvotes

I’m currently a rising college senior recruiting for full-time jobs, and honestly, I’ve been struggling to figure out what I want my career to look like.

For context, I’ve interned across consulting, banking, and engineering, but none of them ever felt like the right fit. A lot of my friends finished their internships thinking, “I could genuinely see myself doing this,” and I’ve never had that feeling. I’m fortunate to already have a return offer, but I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something out there that would make me happier.

I’m trying to find a job where I feel fulfilled by the work, make a decent amount of money, and have enough WLB to enjoy my life outside of work (I know that’s a really hard reach for a first job lol).

But I’ve also never felt particularly drawn to traditional corporate life. I’ve always imagined myself doing work that’s high-impact and creative, and sometimes it feels like corporate environments just suck the life out of me. So while I’m recruiting for consulting and big tech, I’ve also been seriously considering startups.

The problem is that I have no idea how to figure out which startups are actually worth applying to, or how to muster the courage to take the risk of stepping away from the more traditional path. I’d especially love to hear from people in tech/startups about how they approached this.

It’s also complicated by the fact that my partner and I are trying to close our LDR, so I’m balancing my career prospects with theirs and trying to figure out where we should live.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been in a similar position, and maybe some reassurance too:

  1. How did you decide between startups and a traditional corporate path?
  2. How did you figure out what kind of work/environment was actually right for you?
  3. How did you find a company or role that ended up being a good fit?

I’d especially love to hear how people navigated this uncertainty when they didn’t have a clear sense of what they wanted to do after graduation.

Advice What direction I should go in after the military?

Upvotes

I separate in 2027. I joined at 18 and currently work a desk job handling paperwork. I’ve been in for 4 years.

I'm not sure what route I should go in next. I don't have a degree and I don't really care for my current job or being enlisted. I have about 4k saved and plan to move to a new city.

I'm thinking about skill-bridging and using my g.i bill but I don't know what route I should go in from here as the job market isn't in the best place. I'd like to get out and have a guaranteed job. How would you guys go about things? I've done research on trades and different jobs in the IT field, however there's nothing that I feel completely sold on, which is an odd feeling.

Advice How to ask my boss for my old job back?

Upvotes

I was at my old job about 5 years and while I had my ups and downs, I was a mostly-high performer on a team that specialized in dealing with some of the more complex issues/cases within my department. It was a little monotonous and boring, and I really wanted more stimulation/challenge at the time (and I really wanted to raise my income as well, as I’ve got a dependent now).

My old job was wfh, decent pay, great benefits low stress although boring. My new job is in office (20 mile commute, 35-45 minutes usually) 20% higher pay, slightly less in benefits, very high stress and very complex and difficult work. They never trained me, they believe in “trial by fire”

My question is would it be weird or crazy to reach out to my old boss and express interest in coming back?? I left on good terms. Only thing is I have not seen any openings in our department on the website. It’s a pretty large department around 70 people so I’m hoping someone will leave or get promoted or potentially the department grows.

Training for my old position takes about 3 months + another 3 months to ramp up to speed. So I think they would save a ton of money and time if they hired me vs anyone else without experience in the company.

How would I even approach that conversation??

I find myself with a greal deal of time, what kind of licenses would be the most valuable for me to get?

Upvotes

As the title says, I now have a lot of time to kill at work where I could be doing some work to improve my resume, and I think that this field would be a good one for me.

I've already got a master's degree in IR, and live in the far east. Are there any particularly worthy skills or liscenses to develop that would help me to find a good job in this area? I'm flexible with regard to what the subject is and ready to put in the work to do it.
