Hi! I’d really appreciate some recruiters’ perspectives on how to handle this during interviews.
I work remotely in digital marketing. I spent 2 years and 8 months in a senior position at my previous company, with a solid track record and good relationships.
The company then went through layoffs. I wasn’t laid off, but my entire team was affected. Around the same time, I was approached on LinkedIn with an offer to do essentially the same job at another company, with a salary increase. Given what was happening around me, I thought: what great timing. So I resigned and took it.
Unfortunately, the new company turned out to be a terrible fit. There was zero onboarding, management was rude, the culture was very much “every man for himself,” and the environment was completely different from what I had experienced during several rounds of interviews.
On top of that, within two months they expected me to turn around problems that had been going on for roughly a year.
I was ultimately let go during my probation period after two months, and I’m now looking for something else.
The 2-month role is not on my CV or LinkedIn. My LinkedIn still ends with my 2-year-8-month senior position.
My question is specifically about what I should say during interviews when asked why I left my last role / why I’m currently looking.
I see a few options:
- Say that my previous long-term company was going through layoffs/restructuring and that I’m now looking for my next position, without mentioning the 2-month role at all.
- Tell them about the 2-month role and say that I was let go during probation because it wasn’t the right fit.
- Mention the 2-month role but simply explain that the company and role turned out to be very different from what had been presented during the interview process, without going into the details.
I tried being completely transparent in one interview and it immediately triggered a lot of follow-up questions. It became very difficult to explain what happened without either making myself sound bad or sounding like I was bashing my former employer. They ultimately went with another candidate.
What worries me is that saying “I was fired during probation after two months” makes me sound either unreliable or bad at my job, while saying “I decided it wasn’t right for me after two months” could make me sound impulsive.
Recruiters: what would you recommend I actually say in an interview?
Would you expect a candidate to disclose a 2-month job that isn’t on their CV, or would you consider it completely reasonable to talk about the previous 2-year-8-month position as their last relevant role?
And if I should disclose it, what explanation would raise the fewest red flags?
PS: I work with DTC/e-commerce brands in digital marketing, where formal reference checks with every previous employer are relatively uncommon.
