I work part-time at a grocery store, and I’m curious what other people think about how this situation was handled.

I was working near the self-checkout when I noticed an individual who appeared to be under the influence of drugs. I then saw her shoplifting. Once I was sure of what I had seen, I immediately told the employee who was in charge of the checkout area.
She told me to find a manager, so I took a quick walk around the store looking for one. I couldn’t find anyone, so I returned to the checkout area and told her that I hadn’t been able to find a manager. By that point, the individual was already walking out of the store.

I went looking for my store manager again. While looking for him, I came across a department manager and explained everything that had happened. She went to the front of the store and then came back to speak with me.
She told me that I should have approached the individual and asked if she needed help as a way of discouraging her from shoplifting.

I explained that the individual appeared to be under the influence and that I didn’t feel comfortable approaching her because I had no idea how she might react. The manager responded that the individual probably wouldn’t have done anything to me and said that I still should have approached her.
I understand the idea behind approaching someone and simply asking, “Can I help you with anything?” But I’m a part-time employee, not Loss Prevention, and in this particular situation I genuinely felt uncomfortable approaching someone who appeared intoxicated or under the influence.

I reported what I saw, tried to find a manager when I was instructed to, and continued looking for management afterward. I just didn’t feel like potentially putting myself in an unsafe situation over stolen merchandise.

Was I in the wrong for not approaching her and how should I go about reporting her?

I work at a small lingerie shop, and sometimes there are no customers for a long time because it’s in a small gallery in a small town. At work, I can’t use my phone in the sales area, only in the back. When I’m working with coworkers, that’s not really a problem, but sometimes I work alone, and I’m wondering what you guys do when everything is done at the store and there are no customers

I've been working since Thursday and my day off is this coming Thursday. I just hate how schedules tend to overlap like that, at least the shifts are fairly short like usually 5 hour shifts, sometimes 4. I just want to work less hours so I can balance things out more in my life, like job searching and making plans with friends and appointments. I guess I am just not used to working this many days in a row,

I do plan on altering my availability to from what seems like 20-25 hours to just 15, just to balance things out more

For those of you who have worked in retail, or really any organization, I’m curious about the place you look back on and think, that was a genuinely great company to work for.

You don’t have to name the company. I’m more interested in what made the experience so good.

Was it the culture? The people around you? Your boss? The work itself? The opportunities you were given? The way the company treated people? The feeling that what you were doing actually mattered?

Or was it something completely different?

I’d especially love to hear what that company or its leaders actually did that made it feel different from other places you’ve worked.

And if you left, do you still look back on it positively? What made that experience stick with you?

I’m genuinely interested in hearing people’s experiences, especially the things great companies do that are harder to put on a benefits sheet or company values poster.

Hello! I'm 16 and I'm meant to be starting my first retail job in a few weeks but the place I'm going to work for is a new store meaning that it's probably going to be really busy so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what I should know before I start working? I'm dreading using the tills in case I mess up...

First I'm stuck in a horrible position. Im in a situation where I have no choice but to work here for 6 more more months.

Every single customer is exhausting and my personality has died becuase of it. My tone when talking went from nice to mono IDGAF attitude . Every customer asks if im ok or get a new job if you hate it so much.

I have a team of idiot leads that all hide including the store manager.

Only plus side about this job is we dont get write ups if where late.

The leads feed off of overtime while the cashiers are dying

Im at my witts end to obviously report the entire store but in the meantime I just want to survive a little longer and get out.

Ill take any job in existence in comparison to this job

I rather sewer dive in shit at this point as long as there is no customers involved .

This job is mentally draining and I see so many cashiers quit and im hanging on for deal life 6 more months and Im free

Im sick of 500 customers asking me how my day is going and then judge me when they feel im frustrated and I feel like im about to break or have a heart attack.

I finally got to the point of breathing techniques and not lookin the customer in the eyes as I have instant hate for every single one of them.

It's gotten so bad I even wear a surgical mask to hide the pain and camouflage my no smiling mouth. This worked alot but its taking it to the limits.

Im litterly dying and in the backround the leads are in deep conversation about who knows what.

I can call in sick for a week and go back and the manager doesnt care so that's cool but I need the money

Please how do you cashiers do it. I have tremendous respect for every single cashier.

Hi there, we're new to retail but suddenly own a full-blown store. We're getting our arms around everything pretty well, but I don't think our inventory receiving process is great.

Seems like there are two options: purchase orders or just using the invoices.

I'm wondering what most people do - do you create purchase orders to manage receiving orders?

I've worked in 3 POS systems so far (We're installing Toast, atm, because I think it will give me the good inventory insights I want), and the purchase order process seems cumbersome.

But one annoyance: I haven't seen a way to create new items as part of a purchase order creation, so we frequently have to do that as a pre-step. This will probably be less of an issue when we're in a rhythm and RE-ordering, but so far we've been ordering a ton of new inventory, so the items need to be created in our system before the purchase order is created.

Another thing that feels inefficient: purchase orders are like a recreation of the order we just placed, feels duplicative and unnecessary.

We've noticed that commonly POS systems also allow for receiving inventory from an invoice; is that a better way to go? Doing it that way seems to create the items at the time of invoice upload, but does receiving inventory this way work as well? Would we be losing anything if we do it this way?

Any insights you can offer are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

so i got hired as a seasonal employee in june, everything has been great/normal i usually work 5 hour shifts as cashier and occasionally sales floor. i just got scheduled a shift for a wednesday with the title “special projects” from 5:30 pm -1:30am. i’m just wondering what that it is or what i can expect?

This is probably dumb, forgive me. I’ve never worked where there were registers before to know how it works, and I had a bit of a moment a few hours ago because this guy I hooked up with eight weeks ago and it was kinda a mutual ghosting, is the manager of a small supermarket in my neighbourhood that I don’t frequent, but two weeks ago I was in there, he served me, chatted, ask how I’ve been when I was scanning my card in silence. I had to go in today again and though I can’t say with 100% certainty he was on the register when I walked in because I didn’t look, I grabbed a few things then went to the register and a young kid served me but I noticed the screen said “you’re being served by: MANAGER.” If it had been this kid there the whole time, would he be logged in under manager? My guess is no. Or did this guy ditch his post to avoid scanning a bell pepper and asking if I want a bag.

Hi 👋🏼 If you’ve been a retail manager for a while, especially if you’ve worked in “luxury” goods or volume locations that do $1.5 mil or more a year… What are your employer plans like? No need to list companies, though I am curious, but what do you pay for medical/dental/vision per paycheck (bi weekly or monthly)? Did you notice your plans change price or provider after the BBB went into effect?

i applied for a carters baby clothes position that was titled like “temp call center universal agent, remote” back in mid to late july I believe. my application on workday has said “under consideration” for about a month. I have no referred number or person to email to ask about it so idk what to do. am i still possibly going to get the job? is it not likely? please help me out

I don't really like going into work later in the day especially if I don't have anything going on earlier in the day and am mostly just waiting around for me to go into work. I have what is called anticipatory anxiety, and I would much prefer to work earlier in the day because then I don't have to deal with boredom or have any of those thoughts

was wondering if you wear makeup to work when working in retail

I would prob wear it, but my shift starts at 4am idk if I'll have energy to do my makeup tbh😭

I’m currently volunteering at a charity shop. While it’s been going great so far, I still struggle to maintain eye contact. Sometimes I’ll just stare down at the till area instead of trying to start a conversation. I’ve always been kind of introverted and shy to be honest, but I want to be able to be able to be communicative and charismatic atleast for while I’m at the shop. Is there any pieces of advice from people who were previously or are typically quiet/reserved people that can act sociable during retail shifts?

I’m nervous because I’ve been self employed for a good time and am a foreigner and have had anxiety to be out in the world. But I know I’m also charismatic, well presented and have experience in the business.

I just resigned from my Customer Service job in a supermarket, and I’m currently on my 2-week notice period.

I want to move into Sales, Cashier, or Customer Service in fashion or beauty brands (like Sephora, Primark, Alo Yoga, etc.).

A few quick questions:

1. Is a high school diploma + Retail experience enough for these brands, or is a University Degree mandatory?
2. Does anyone know any HRs, recruiters, or store managers in Alshaya or Chalhoub who could refer me?
