This came about when I was trying to write some metal and wanted a synth solo myself, went listening to a lot of bands I liked, and this is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, if anyone could identify that particular synth or find something very similar, I would appreciate it a lot!

Really looking to make a vowel patch to save, I’ve gotten close by looking at different guides but nothing that tells me exactly where to position all my knobs, which is what I could really use right now.

I've been trying to figure out this specific strings sound that Darkchild used a lot in his late '90s/early 2000s
R&B productions. I'm trying to figure out what VST, plugin, sample, or string patch he used because I LOVE the sound and want to find it for my own beats.

Hello! I have spent 3 nights now trying to recreate this synth melody as a way to teach myself. Though I’m learning a lot, I can’t quite get the sound to match up.

You can hear the synth melody around 0:15 in this video.

I’ve tried using a triangle and sawtooth oscillator with low frequency cutoff that opens up 50% with 0 attack, and a sharp decay and medium sustain.

To my ears, the synth sounds warm. I tried to recreate this effect by slightly detuning my second oscillator, but the overall sound is jarring and basic.

I’m really curious how this type of sound can be recreated. I’ve tried looking up youtube videos but haven’t found a tutorial that achieves this effect.

I’m hoping someone experienced could help me recreate this synth, I don’t know why I’m so obsessed lol. Thank you for reading!

Hello everybody! Could anybody, please, explain to me is that a guitar that makes a wobbly sound on the background? Can I make such sound in Serum, Pigments? Maybe you can recommend any vst and presets?

A warm, dark, sustained Cm9 chord pad/drone heavily low-passed around 800 Hz, with a mellow, organ-like or filtered-saw character and no high-end content above 1 kHz. Thank you!

I've been down an absolute rabbit hole trying to reverse-engineer the drop synth from Tourist - Holding On (Kuga Remix) at 1:34, and I'm hitting a wall.

Track specs: G minor, 145 BPM (half-time 72.5 BPM festival groove)

My setup: Ableton Live + Xfer Serum

What the sound actually feels like:

Every generic future bass tutorial tells you to take 2 saw oscillators, crank the unison detune, and slap OTT on it. But every time I do that, it sounds like cheap, buzzy, plastic EDM.

This drop doesn't sound like a generic supersaw lead. It sounds more like a cinematic score—super wide, warm, emotional, and glued together like an ODESZA or Flume pad where it's just one living sound, rather than a bunch of digital saw waves buzzing together.

What I've already dialed in:

1. The Voicings: It's open drop voicings spread across 4 octaves (F -> Gm -> Bb -> Eb).

2. The Movement: The chords have to be sustained (held for 2 full bars) and ducked under the kick to breathe. Chopping the MIDI notes into stabs completely kills the bloom and makes it sound like a stuttering typewriter.

3. The Texture: When I push the high end, it gets metallic and robotic. When I mess with pitch envelopes, it immediately turns into cheesy video game lasers. Tightening the unison detune (around 0.07) and rolling the low-pass filter down to ~1.8 kHz gets it closer to that warm French horn/cello body, but it's still missing that special glued texture.

4. The Stems: Looking at isolated stems, it's clear the drop isn't an instrument sample flipped from the original Tourist song, but there's definitely a pitched vocal chop formant singing inside or right on top of the chord stack.

My questions for the sound design wizards:

• How are you building this in Serum so it sounds organic and cinematic instead of metallic and digital?

• Are they using vocal-formant wavetables (like an 'Ahhh' choir or an EVOXA-style vocal oscillator) blended with the saws to give it that human throat resonance?

• What's the secret to the harmonic glue? Is it heavy analog tape saturation, specific filter curves, or something on the master bus that fuses the layers into one wall of sound?

Any patch breakdowns, routing tricks, or Serum presets that live in this exact world would save my sanity. Thank you!

Im trying to recreate the bass synth and was hoping if anyone got any pointers on how to achieve this jumpy, bass synth for this song. It plays throughout the whole song but at 1:54 its gets easier to hear.

I launched a track today called "Twiglet" and wanted to share the sound design breakdown, while also getting some feedback on how to handle heavy distortion over complex jazz/chromatic chords.

The Synth Setup:

• A-Section: I’m running aggressive, janky saw waves over a highly chromatic progression: Amaj7 ➔ Bbmaj7b5 ➔ Fsus4/C ➔ Em7b5 ➔ Dbm7b5 ➔ Bbm7#5 ➔ Amaj7.
• The Problem: Because of the dense voice-leading and close intervals (like the maj7s and b5s), the high distortion makes the chords want to turn into absolute mud. I had to do a lot of precise EQ carving in the low-mids to keep the notes distinct without losing the aggressive bite.

The B-Section Drop:

• It takes a sharp turn into a bossa nova groove (Bbmaj7 ➔ Bb7 ➔ Ebm7 ➔ Db7dim ➔ Cm7 ➔ F7).
• For this texture, I synthesized a broken, eerie children’s toy piano sound to contrast against the massive saw waves.

I’d love to know how you guys approach distorting complex chords. Do you split the frequencies and only distort the highs, or do you handle it natively within the synth patch? How does the transition between the massive saws and the thin toy piano feel to your ears?

main synth starting around 0:12 has a really specific texture. I want to recreate this patch in Serum, but I haven't been able to nail the wavetables or the FX chain yet. If anyone has pointers on how to route or process this to get close to the original, I'd really appreciate the insight!
