MOD POST Remembering and Honoring u/bluequail

Upvotes

It is with a heavy heart that I share some incredibly sad news with our community.

Our top mod [u/bluequail](u/bluequail) passed away on June 30th. I was informed on that day by her oldest son. He also announced it on her facebook page for those who knew her IRL.

bluequail was a vital part of this community, volunteering her time, energy, and passion to help make this space a welcoming and safe environment for everyone. She was an active mod in this same sub for over 16 years. It's incredibly rare to see that level of commitment and longevity these days. She was a great friend and I miss her.

She was a very kind woman who not only took care of her family, but was also very kind and generous to people in need everywhere. She donated a lot of money over the years to complete strangers on Reddit, in subs like [r/assistance](r/assistance) and [r/care](r/care). She helped people IRL too, and even welcomed some people into her own home. She also cared for animals on her farm.

My thoughts and prayers are with bluequail’s family, loved ones, and friends during this difficult time. Thank you all for being part of this community and for helping us honor her memory. Her presence will be deeply missed here.

I know she made many friends on Reddit under this username or her other account where she made most of her donations. I want to invite everyone to use the comment section below as a space to share your favorite memories, expressions of gratitude, or kind words in her honor.

Please keep all comments respectful and supportive.

Posting Guidelines

  • Posters and commenters must now have an account at least 15 days old with atleast 50 comment karma. These will be automatically removed if you do not meet the requirements.

  • Do not submit a post with a title in all caps, or a blank post with just a title. These will be removed automatically.

  • No polls or surveys.

Rules

Below are the rules of this sub. Disregarding any of these rules may result in a ban. Both posts and comments are subject to all rules.

  1. Nothing personal relationship, sex, or dating related or anything about stalking a person. Even commenting on these threads is a grounds for a ban.

/r/needadvice is a subreddit for getting advice about things going on in our lives outside of our relationship with significant others, potential significant others, and significant others of days past. Your relationship, your parent's relationships, your friend's relationships... if you are dealing with any person's romantic relationship, it doesn't belong in here. (This is code for "no romance related stuff") No dating advice. No hookup advice. No sex related advice, including anything involving rape (even if it happened to you), molestation, or underage sexual activity.

  1. Nothing about personal messaging each other - Don't ask or tell posters or other commenters to PM, DM, or inbox you.

  2. No sharing/posting to drama subs - Anybody cross posting any threads to the drama causing subs (subreddit drama, any of the SRS, just anything to increase the drama in a thread) will be banned. That just won't be tolerated at any level. Don't tattle on the mods of other subs here either.

  3. No revenge submissions - No "How to get even" at all, not in submissions, not in comments.

  4. No threadjacking or comment qualifiers - Stay focused on OP's problem. If you disagree with someone else's advice, offer some advice of your own with a top level comment instead of debating. If you agree with someone's advice and have nothing to add, just upvote it.

  5. No misogyny, misandry, racism, religious intolerance, or similar - Respect one another, even those you disagree with. We're all equal here. It does not matter if you're male, female, null, both, or nongendered. It does not matter where your come from, or what color your skin is. When meeting someone from a different walk of life, treat that person as you would like them to treat you.

  6. No lying advice - Don't ask how to lie, don't advise on lying.

  7. No references to suicides - Anything related to suicidal ideations are not allowed. For the sake of yours or your family/friend's safety, anything mentioning suicide needs to go to /r/SuicideWatch

  8. No soliciting items or funds - Since we allow throwaways, don't solicit money in here. Please view any effort to solicit money in here as a scam. But any need for donations can go to /r/assistance or /r/care.

  9. No advertising - Do not link your subreddit (unless it is relevant to the subject matter of the post), your youtube page, your personal website, clickbait, or stuff for sale. Mods are the arbiters of what constitutes advertising.

  10. Kinda Safe for work - We know that lots of controversial and personal things get talked about here, and that's fine. Try to keep your titles safe for work by avoiding foul language and graphic descriptions.

  11. Nothing about missing persons - Don't ask about how to track someone down or find someone you used to know.

  12. No stand-alone jokes. A joke with legitimate advice is fine, but not by itself.

Ban Appeals

  • For ban appeals: Do not delete any of your comments and posts, especially if they were removed by the mods. Deleting submissions looks evasive, and it forces us to choose between your word and our memory. Only the mod that removed you can reinstate you.

  • Ask once.

  • Ask nicely.

Mental Health I just found out that my grandmother is unexpectedly dying and I’m in pieces.

Upvotes

Im a 21yo girl that lost her other grandma this year and I think im about to lose my other grandma. My grandma turned 86yo last week. We found out she had a little tumor in the pancreas a few months ago but she was doing well and she was mentally stable also, my mom said a bit worried but I think I was a bit ingenious bc she also didn’t told me all of the situation. Last week everything started to drastically change, she is now taking morphine everyday and my mom says she is getting very skinny and she think that maybe she won’t be with us for more than this month. This is shocking me so much because it’s a drastic change and I’m scared of going to visit her, I don’t really know why. Is just so hard to believe she is in this situation, I called her a couple times last week to talk and it’s brutal how I can see how changed she is from one week to another. It breaks my heart. This summer I’ve been visiting her a few times and we had lot of fun and talked a lot and then this is happening.
My mom kinda avoids the theme and it’s making it difficult bc I never know in what situation she is.
What should I think? What should I do?

Life Decisions Hi.. can someone give me rebel bad bitch advice? I need to turn my life around but its a long story.

Upvotes

Basically... shoot well... I spent my whole life trying to win over abusive parents... they only started helping me this year at age 25 when threatened to look bad.

I forgive them however I need to cut ties.. they want me to find my own support asap.. essentially they can maybe help a bit longer but dont want to..

I had a disease called multiple sclerosis since my youth.. I should've gone and done my own thing long ago but I guess I didn't get the memo. I feel like a needy good girl.

I've been trying to get on disability payments for w years.. I dont regret trying that but its taking a long time. I have 1-5 months left roughly to find out the verdict but now im under my parents payments and it makes me feel pathetic.

I feel like getting support from literally anyone else would be better.

For my ego and life.

Anyway.. well idk the only options I can think of is caretaking for elderly ans asking if i can live for them for free (I have experience with that), or give up on trying to get disability and go back to work (I can work but i have moments where im really sick and I wanted that back up so i dont have to ever rely on anyone else ever again)... BUT i feel needy nerdy no matter what path I take tbh.. all of them dont make up for my years of being a little weenie baby who just was ok with breadcrumbs and didn't leave on my own even if it meant going to the streets.. I tolerated immense amounts of disrespect and just less than the bare minimum and painted it as a happy story and happy family..

Its like ill never feel the satisfaction of the reality I lived out.. I really could've been on the streets and developing a bad girl tough persona or abused persona but instead I wss a cover up girl for a whole family and just smiled around for years and then mooched off of my own family who hated me.. Just so lame.

Idk if there's anything bad bitch enough I could do at this point to erase my embarrassment but I also wanna be wise and make the right choice...

Idk I mean I am young and capable at least some of the time so I might not get disability Anyway.

My problem with going back to work is right now it feels like id be telling my family that they won. If I can find a place to be then care of one last time it migth at least validate my victim complex.

I just wanna be validated but ya I dont wanna go nowhere in life either. I just dont know what to do like do it all myself?? Find someone else to help me who's not my parents? Or suck it up and let them help me a few more months and lose my opportunity of an independent story (a last minute and way later one than I couldve had long ago).

Interpersonal Unsure of how to proceed with my relationship with my bio dad

Upvotes

Situation... Me and my bio father have had a rough relationship all my life. He was verbally and mentally abusive. Him and my mom were the same, mental and verbal abuse. They got divorced after I turned 18, and I had a hard start into life on my own. He left to go his way after I asked if I could come with (me not going with him btw).

Fast forward not quite a quinquennium (sorry, decade is to much time, I didn't mean to add such a fancy word), my mom passes from cancer 3rd go around and afterwards Dad says via a family member to not contact him, he doesn't want anything to do with me.

Fast forward -attempts mental math- from 2009 to 2024 in which I don't hear from him or anything, to.... "Hey I want to talk, I have some things I want to get off my chest"

He apologies for all the shit he did to me growing up, the ignoring for years and everything.

I just don't know what to say or do now. We.... Reconciled sort of. But I already grieved for what felt like was a loss of my Mom and Dad. I'm trying to reconnect again... But it has been so difficult that I don't know what or how to even go about this. The caution and nervousness of communicating with him is still very present.

TL;Dr bio father wants to reconnect after a shit life on his part. He's apologized, but I don't know where to go from here.

Thoughts or feedback on best ways to approach this?

Life Decisions Do I cut off my dad after uni?

Upvotes

I’m 19F at university, and I have no clue what to do.
My mum and dad met while he was still married to his first wife, and my mum was in a serious relationship. She was his secretary and toward the end of both their relationships they started having an affair together.
My dad then filed for divorce (it’s kinda important but also kinda not to note that he had two kids with his ex wife) and they started dating officially pretty much straight after that.

My dad was dead set on not having another kid, already having two very young children with his ex wife, but my mum was desperate to have one of her own. Eventually a few years after they got Married, she convinced him and they ended up having me.

You know when you get someone a puppy and they’re known for hating dogs but suddenly the puppy becomes their favourite thing in the whole entire world?
That’s basically what happened with me and my dad.

I was a massive daddy’s girl, and he became obsessed with giving me every opportunity he never had, and he was never really able to give his two other kids.
Every sport and hobby he got me into, we would read together, he’d play Barbie’s with me, he taught my guitar - you get the picture.
However, my dad had a very long and very large amount of childhood trauma. His
Mum was an alcoholic and his dad was like
Henry VIII with the amount of wives he would go through.
My dad had been sent abroad by the age of 12 to go and live with other family because neither of his parents could be trusted or bothered to raise him.
This is sort of important because in the background of my whole childhood was this undercurrent of resentment toward his own
Parents, determination not to turn out like them, and a shit Ton of self loathing and anger management issues on his own
Part.
My dad had an affair when I was 6, and things only really got worse after that.
Me my mum and dad would be having arguments every weekend. Both of them were pretty bad - my mum tended to be the more verbally abusive one, and my dad the physically abusive. I remember one time
He slammed my head into a door so hard
That I couldn’t open my mouth properly for 2 weeks.
I witnessed their fights a lot as well, and as an only child I was dragged into the arguments a lot of the time. If my dad was hitting my mum she would scream for me to “come and see what your dad is doing to me” they also used to tell me they were getting a divorce every other week, which honestly I WISHED they would.
Anyway fast forward a few years and at 17 I hit a massive depressive episode. I started sh and, well, I can’t really say it on here but just know that things were pretty bad- Like contemplating bad things.
My dad was…not great, during this time. He yelled a lot. Got angry with me for distancing myself from him. Took everything I did as a personal attack. Couldn’t understand that I
Might just be in pain on a personal standpoint.
My relationship with him had never been worse, but for the first time I felt like I could finally breathe and just get away from the suffocation of having to deal with all of his childhood trauma and issues.
Before, he always used to call me his kindred spirit and tell me things about how he was feeling that he didn’t feel comfortable telling mum.
Guys istg, i was a literal child having to comfort my dad over his mummy issues.
Anyway, yeah, ironically, despite being so depressed it was the best I’ve ever felt In Terms of emotional freedom.
Since then we’ve all tried to get back to normal, and I’m doing better now in myself. But whilst my dad isn’t physically abusive anymore, he is definetly verbally abusive. He has severe anger management issues, anything I do - like forgetting to put a lid on something, becomes a commentary on my character - usually it’s “your irresponsible, unreliable, lazy, bitchy, going nowhere in life, pathetic, a wallflower etc” and I’m just so done with it.
My mum knows it too, and even threatened divorce recently, but they’ve been together since she was 18 and he was 29 (let’s not talk another that age gap 😐) and she still loves him so much so that won’t happen.

My question is, what the fuck do I do. The minute I’m financially independent, do
I just cut him off? And then also risk loosing the rest of my family? But I don’t think I can deal with this manchild anymore.
If anyone has any advice I would so so so appreciate it.

Friendships Should I stop talking to my friend?

Upvotes

Hey I'm 26M and I just need some anonymous advice. I've been friends with this guy since senior year of highschool, I'll call him "P" for now. We used to share a friend group with 3 other guys and a girl and as time went on that friend group just grew distant. He has another group of friends he made in a college I didn't go to and sometimes he would invite me to hang out with them.

As of late I've felt like he's been ignoring me and not respecting our friendship like he respects his other "real" friends, this past friday they all went out drinking and I wasn't invited at all, one of those friends even asked me if I was going the day of and I just told them I dind't even know there was any plans. Anyways me and "P" had plans the next day to go out to lunch and use these coupons we both won to get 20% off our entire bill and that was the last day to do it. And he bailed on me last minute because he felt his stomach was hurting from drinking which I understand, but this is the second time he has done this to me this month. He also NEVER texts me first when this happens, if I have plans with someone and I wake up sick or something and don't feel like going, I would send them the text FIRST, and tell them "hey i don't feel good today lets reschedule". But he doesn't do this to me ever, I end up texting him the day of like "hey ill be there in 10 mins" to which he sends a text back like "oh yeah im not going cuz my stomach hurts". He has also ghosted me once before for most of 2025.

The only reason why we started talking again is because one of his friends from that group asked me why I dind't hang out with them anymore and convinced me to text him again. If I'm being honest the only reason why I still talk to this guy is because him + that group are basically the only friends I have, if I stopped talking to him all I would be doing is going to work, classes, and the gym and would have no real social interactions, but just little "hellos" and "good mornings" or quick conversations from coworkers / classmates. I just feel it's almost impossible for me to make real genuine friends as an adult in this generation, If I could just find a new friend group that was actually genuine to me I would feel much better about all of this. Anyways, thanks for reading my rambling if you did.

Mental Health My cousins eating habits trigger my ED

Upvotes

I (18F) have always been pretty small, while for as long as I’ve been around my cousin he’s been bigger. As my ED has gotten worse I’ve realized I’m not just policing my food but other people. We had a big family gathering and we had just gobs of food already, so we set a boundary saying “no more food” because my uncle tends to also bring way more food then needed and it ends up just staying at the lake house until it goes bad. Either way my uncle brought 2 dozen donuts “because he didn’t want to come empty handed”. This was around noon so everyone had already eaten a massive breakfast of BYO breakfast tacos, but my brother and his 4 friends (19-22M) came back from the lake and had a donut each, by this my cousin (17M) had already eaten two. So there is 4 left in the box. After dinner time the rest of the donuts were gone, and since I had been in the kitchen all day I know who grabbed what. I personally only saw him grab 2 more, but I’m pretty sure he ate the rest as well. So in less than 12 hours he ate 4-6 donuts(300+ calories each x6, so 1200-1600 calories just in donuts). For dinner we had brisket at had been smoked for 16 hours. We also had side of baked potatoes and green beans. I couldn’t see what sides he got as I was helping with the brisket but he came back 3 times and loaded his plate with meat. This one I can’t really blame him for because after all it is 16 hour smoked brisket. The next morning I made what we call Bougie cinnamon rolls, just Pillsbury grands with a crap ton of butter and brown sugar then cooked in cream. We had limited everyone to one at the beginning of breakfast (with sides) because we had to split 15 cinnamon rolls among 11 people. My cousin didn’t even leave his room to say good morning because the night before he got mad at me and my mother for telling him to stop moving all the furniture to kill a bug he claims he saw. His dad defended him saying he was embarrassed, after he yelled at my mom for telling him to stop, and me when I tried to offer a solution, but ok. Either way my uncle just insisted that we save some for my cousin. Then later on my uncle is telling me how everyone just loves the cinnamon rolls and how my cousin ate 3 out of the 3.5 left. Throughout the day as I was helping around the house I saw him repeatedly going after the other dozen glazed donuts. Literally coming out of the room, grabbing a donut, and going back in. I went outside intermittently to sit on the dock and I was very frustrated because not only did he eat atleast 6 donuts but he ate the last one and didn’t throw the box away. I’m aware that I shouldn’t police what other people eat which is why I’ve only briefly mentioned it to my mother. And I’m telling myself that I notice because I care, but really it’s just my fear of food and me probably projecting. Would appreciate some advice because I’m just kinda stuck, and I do realize I’m an asshole for this so please don’t respond just to tell me that.

Career Got disqualified from the Air Force

Upvotes

For about a year now I've been at work to join the air force, I am M(25) and about to be 26 and I finally want to turn my life around. So I start talking to a recruiter, did all the paperwork to start, went to MEPS, but couldn't proceed due to a pilonidal cyst and some irritation on the scalp. Which they told me if it was just the scalp issue, I probably could have proceeded but since they caught the cyst I couldn't have gotten sworn in. So after I get it surgically removed and all my medical papers turned in for the health waiver. I get disqualified for psoriasis, I haven't seen a dermatologist to get it diagnosed as psoriasis but anytime I am asked about it, psoriasis was an easy default answer i turned to. My recruiter tells me the workaround on the cyst is to try again in 6 months but doesn't know a workaround for the psoriasis. I'm seeing a dermatologist beginning of next month to examine it and I am just hoping it isn't that. I'm freaked out and feel like I'm gonna disappoint everyone who's been rooting for me. I had high hopes for this path but now I feel like I'm gonna end up having to go to a different branch which was the worst case scenario. Is there a possible workaround or something I should bring up at the dermatologist? I am about ready to beg the doc to just not put it down as that and rather something more qualifying.

Edit: Forgot to mention that, on the email/letter, that one of the disqualification conditions was "Psoriasis, unspecified". So if it can come back to it not being that, there is a glimpse of hope. Not that I'm gonna get my hopes up. I can recover and keep my chin up.

Also thank you all for your kind words and guidance.

Finance I can’t afford therapy anymore

Upvotes

Hey guys! I need some advice here. I am a student and I’m currently doing exposure therapy at NOCD. Every single day my schedule is PACKED. Work, college, and providing childcare for my parents. A few times I have had to cancel apportionment last minute because I need to watch my sisters, go pick them up, etc. I know this will continue to happen. Many times my parents can’t plan properly or my grandma FORGETS to pick them up so the school calls me. I really just can’t afford the cancellations. NOCD keeps charging up my card every time (which I know will happen) but I can’t exactly change some circumstances. I’m thinking about quitting therapy here just because of that. What should I do?

Career I was unexpectedly offered a full-time job before finishing my Master's and I have no idea what to do

Upvotes

I'm currently in the second year of a Master's in Industrial Pharmacy and I'm supposed to enroll in an additional year starting this October because I still have to do my Master's thesis. For the past 6 months I've been working as a student at a large pharmaceutical company in pharmaceutical development. I really like my team and the work is interesting. My original plan was very straightforward: stay a student for another year, finish my Master's, and then start looking for a full-time job after graduating. But now something completely unexpected happened. My manager called me into a meeting near the end of the day on Thursday and offered me a full time position. I honestly wasn't expecting this at all. She told me that she sees a lot of potential in me. She also spoke to the researchers who work with me (she doesn't work with me directly every day) and apparently they all had very positive things to say about me. The funny thing is that she originally told me she had been looking for someone with a lot of experience, or at least someone with a PhD. I have neither. I haven't even finished my Master's yet. She basically said that having a PhD and years of experience doesn't automatically make someone good, it's something you develop and she thinks I'm someone they could develop. The offer would initially be at a lower job level because I don't have my Master's yet. She said that after I finish the Master's, I would get a higher title and salary. We haven't discussed the exact numbers yet. The job would be full-time (40h/week), with some possibility of working from home. I would also continue working on my Master's thesis alongside the job, mostly on the same project I would already be working on. I really like my current team. I have a very good relationship with them and I feel like I'm part of the group already.

I'm nervous about the actual responsibility of being a full-time employee. I've only been here for 6 months. I still have a lot to learn. I don't expect myself to know everything, but I'm scared of disappointing people who seem to believe I have potential.

On the other hand, this seems like a really good opportunity. I already know the company, the people, the project and the general environment. I like the field. My manager specifically wants to train/develop me. And instead of graduating next year and starting from zero somewhere else, I could start building my career now.

Financially, money isn't really the deciding factor for me.

So I guess my dilemma is basically:

Do I stay a student for another year, finish my Master's, and then look for a job with a Master's degree but no guarantee of where I'll end up?

Or:

Do I accept this job now, become a full-time employee while finishing my Master's, and start my career earlier in a field I already know I like?

I know objectively that the second option sounds pretty good, but I'm still having a hard time processing how quickly everything changed. A few weeks ago I was thinking about being a student for another whole year, and now I'm suddenly being asked to become a full-time employee.

I'm interested in hearing from people who have been in a similar situation, especially people in pharma/R&D/science:

Would you take the job before finishing the Master's? Is it a bad idea to combine a full-time job with a Master's thesis? And am I overthinking the fact that my team will have to replace me as a student?

Career Am I too good for my company? I’m not sure…

Upvotes

I’ve been with my current company for 8+ years. In April 2025 we were purchased by a larger company that has been great for not only the company, but the people in terms of benefits and pay. They have never been in our industry until they purchased our company.

I’m a senior production team leader. I’ve trained a majority of our staff in my department, written company training programs, made determinations on new protocols, etc.

Unfortunately I’m now in the position that I’m being pigeonholed as we expand to other cities in the US. They say I’m too valuable to have go to other sites.

My boss was promoted to a nearby site and I’ve now spent time with him and found many inefficiencies that could have been avoided if they had involved people on the production side. I’ve been told to stay in my lane (while also being able to cover him when he is on vacation) and that a ME could have done what I’ve done so far. We only have one ME, the one who setup the location.

I was on PTO this week. Is it wrong that I’ve put my resume up on sites I know they specifically recruit from??

Education foundational skills and habits to learn while while frontal lobe is still developing?

Upvotes

context:

i'm 23f.
i was diagnosed with executive dysfunction adhd about a year ago and until this diagnosis, it was pretty debilitating.
this, coupled with chronic illness that kept me out of school every other week starting from pre-k, my stubbornness, and my frustration, there's a lot i ended up not learning - not properly, sometimes not at all.

i took a child psychology class last month and it got me thinking about how my frontal lobe will complete development soon.
i bet a lot of what is said on social media about this is sensationalized and you can definitely still learn as you get older, but i also read there are certain things that are just way easier to learn with the neuroplasticity we have before 25 - at least the foundation, because then we'll have the transferrable skills to hone whatever at any age.

TLDR: my question is what are the foundational skills, knowledge, and habits to learn/form before 25 that will 1. be good for my brain and 2. make learning anything i'd like feel not-so-strenuous down the line?

ranging from proper breathing techniques, bicycling, and cutting in a circle with scissors to learning the middle split, typing 100+wpm, and mastering latin - ALL suggestions welcome no matter how many, or how seemingly-daunting please!

Other Is it normal to be annoyed/irritated whenever I hear someone speak?

Upvotes

Specifically, I get irritated hearing my grandmother speak. When she complains, rambles, or just plain on laugh (somewhat fakely or like a scoff), I get undeniably irritated.

Like I want to claw out my ears and cover them. My grandfather too, he's so undoubtedly loud but my grandmother's voice is more annoying.

It's not even like "I hate her", it's more so the sound of her voice irritates me. Well not always, but I often REALLY get irritated. This goes for other people too, I get irritated whenever I hear a classmate talk, the sound of their voice just agitates me.

And before you ask, no, I do not hold any bad blood to them (not much can be said about my grandparents and my grandma but I won't be going into detail there) it's moreso the sound of their voices or specific sounds from them like their scoffy-laugh, mocking voice, fake sad voice, etc.

This also includes things like hearing someone chew with their mouth open, or whenever I see someone talk with their mouth open while they eat. It just makes me so irritated and disgusted that I have to look away and cover my mouth not to throw up.

Motivation I'm feeling motivated again in life after a few years of complacency. However, I don't know how to consistently give myself grace for where I am at in life or how to look at the bigger picture.

Upvotes

TLDR: I am 25 years old realizing I have a lot more in life to live for. I want to live for those I love and further my education so I can do something with my life and stick around for folks. However, my dead-end job makes me feel like things are hopeless and I can't get myself out of those ruts. What advice do you all have?

Hello! My name is Mylo. I am a 25 (almost 26) year old living in the Northwest Arkansas region. To give some background as to where I am at mentally in my life, I'll have to go back a few years to when I was around 21/22.

When I was 21, I worked a guest services job at an art museum. It wasn't special, and frankly, I was getting fed up with the tiny choices being made here and there. One day, a job I applied for had notified me that they were wanting to hire me. So I put in my notice and I got out of there to hopefully work a better job. Unfortunately, the job was too good to be true and I was out of a job. The mother of the person I was dating at the time helped me out and got me a job as a part-time sales associate at a retail job that she worked at. It was great and it helped me get back on my feet, however, we broke up about a year into this job. I should also mention that I was going to school during this time.

With everything going on, I found myself quitting school and working full-time. I was too depressed, zapped of energy, and I wasn't sure what to do with my career. I got a good pay raise to $21.70 for just a normal sales associate at a retail job. The job wasn't anything special, however, it kept the lights on and it helped me pay for a few vacations. Unfortunately, my ex decided to get a job where I worked. For a bit there, I constantly felt like I was on survival mode. I continued to work here for another year and a half, and just last week, I was notified by my store manager that my transfer request to another store was confirmed. In fact, I just started last Sunday!

Here comes the real meat and potatoes of what I am trying to say:

I'm honestly tired of feeling so down on myself. For the longest time, I wasn't really sure if I even had a future. I couldn't see it. I didn't want to see it. However, I'm starting to realize how lucky I am in my life. If I wasn't broken up with, I wouldn't have met my amazing best-friend (met on dating app, realized better as friends) who became my fantastic roommate. I wouldn't have gotten my amazing cat that I love with all of my heart. I wouldn't have met some defining friends in my life. I wouldn't have gone on these amazing solo-vacations to places like NYC. I'm very happy with a lot of things in my life, and I am happy with who I am as a person. I want to live for so many things right now. Friends, family, even things like GTA6 keep me going. I'm even starting to go back to school here in about 10 days (12 week classes). I just need to finish 9 credit hours to get my associate transfer degree to our state university! Things might be looking up!

...however, this job I am at feels like, pardon my language, a fucking dead-end slog of a job. I feel this sense of dread going in. Everyone feels so distant, there is no one to talk to, and it feels so hopeless. The good news is that starting next month, I'll be at 32 hours a week in order to focus more on my schooling as I know where that priority lies. When I wake up, or when I am at this job, I can't help but feel like I am at some dead-end position in my life and I'll never find new employment, no matter how hard I try, or I fear I won't succeed like I think I will. This is all silly, to be frank, but I feel like I have no real way to combat these thoughts consistently. I am working towards a better life, I am working to finish my degree, I am taking time in my home-life to do things that make me happy (hang with friends, cook something from a cookbook, watch a movie at the theater, etc...).

How can I consistently give myself this reassurance that what I am doing is the best thing I can possibly be doing for myself? What tricks and traits do I need to implement in my daily life so I can unconsciously think "wait, I'm actually goated. I've got this. Things will pan out"?

Mental Health Is it normal to feel depressed after therapy?

Upvotes

I initially sought therapy for severe social anxiety, and it's been helpful. My therapist gives advice that I value. However, lately I've noticed a pattern: I often start the day feeling neutral or good, but after the session, I feel completely drained and depressed.

Diving deep into issues, being vulnerable, and having my thought processes challenged takes a toll. She often points out flaws or issues in the way I think, and even in things I'm interested in. For example, when I mentioned being interested in acting, she said it was just because I "want to be someone else instead of myself", which isn't true.
After session, I’m left with this constant feeling that so many of my thought processes are just wrong.

I went to therapy to seek help and advice, but I leave feeling judged and invalidated. For anyone who has made great progress with a therapist for social anxiety. Is feeling like this a normal part of the process? Thank you for advices!

Life Decisions Would you choose the better-paying job or the more predictable career?

Upvotes

I’m 28, a mom, and I’m currently in a Social Service Worker program with about a year left.
I’ve recently been offered a full-time position with Air Canada at the airport. The starting pay is around $23/hour, with benefits, a pension, union, and opportunities to move up. Honestly, the benefits and pension are what really caught my attention because it feels so hard to find that kind of stability nowadays.

But I’m questioning whether it’s actually realistic for me.
The job involves rotating shifts, potentially early mornings, evenings, weekends, etc. My childcare window is basically 7 AM–5:50 PM, and I’ve already turned down multiple jobs because they started too early or finished too late.
I also don’t really have family I can rely on for childcare because they work rotating shifts themselves.

I’m currently low income/full-time student, so my childcare is covered. If I start making around $934/week before taxes, I’m worried I’ll lose that and have to pay for before/after-school care out of pocket, which could eat into a lot of the extra income.

On the other hand, SSW probably won’t pay as much, but I feel like I’d have a better chance of finding something with Monday-Friday/parent-friendly hours.

Air Canada training starts September 21, but I still don’t even know the training hours, so I don’t know if this is something I can realistically make work.

What would you do? Take the Air Canada opportunity and try to make the childcare situation work because of the pay/benefits/pension, or finish school and prioritize a career with potentially more predictable hours?

Life Decisions 26M, UK — Made nearly $1M in e-commerce revenue last year, now working part-time in fast food and have no idea what to do with my life

Upvotes

Note: NOT asking for couples/relationship advice as per rule 1

I'm 26M and live in the UK. I have a degree in Business Management, a long-term partner (not married), and we're fortunate enough to rent a house from her mum for a very good price.

On paper, I'm actually in a pretty fortunate position. But I feel completely lost about what I'm supposed to do next.

Last year, an e-commerce brand I co-own did nearly $1 million in revenue.

That sounds amazing until you look at what was actually left.

After product costs, VAT, tax, other expenses, splitting everything 50/50 with my business partner, and the fact that virtually the entire business relied on one product, I came away from it with nowhere near the amount of money you'd probably assume from hearing "$1m in revenue."

I've been "doing business" for 2 years technically, from when I first monetized.

This year, sales have sucked.

I don't regret doing it. It taught me an enormous amount, particularly about marketing, selling products online, social media and how quickly an opportunity can disappear when you're dependent on one winning product.

But now I'm questioning what I'm actually good at.

My skill set feels both limited and weirdly specific.

I have a lot of experience posting on social media and creating product-review/UGC-style videos designed to sell products. I'm comfortable talking on camera and making ads. I understand e-commerce marketing reasonably well from actually having done it rather than just taking courses about it.

I also have some limited sales experience—outbound calling, taking inbound calls, talking to customers, etc.—but nothing that would make me an experienced salesperson.

So if I had to put myself into conventional career boxes, I'm basically somewhere between entry-level sales, content creation and e-commerce/marketing.

I've also struggled with imposter syndrome around content creation. I see creators doing significantly better numbers than me, and although I know comparison isn't particularly useful, it's made me question whether I should really bet my future on becoming a creator.

I don't want content creation to become my entire identity or my only option.

Right now, I work part-time at a fast-food place. I can also withdraw roughly $1,000 per month passively from another source. That's obviously a huge privilege, but it isn't enough to properly live on or build the kind of future I want.

I have no debt other than my UK student loan. I have savings, but I've made the decision that I don't want to touch them unless absolutely necessary.

So I'm trying to figure out what the hell I should actually do from here.

Do I:

- Double down on content creation, improve at it and try to build income through UGC/brand deals/affiliate marketing?
- Take everything I learned from the first e-commerce business and find another product/business to build?
- Get a proper full-time job in sales, marketing or e-commerce and build a conventional career while doing business on the side?
- Try to combine all three?
- Or do something completely different—leave my current environment, move somewhere else in the UK or even another country, and basically start a new chapter?

The frustrating thing is that objectively I know I'm extremely fortunate.

I have a great long-term partner. I'm healthy. I have a roof over my head at a very reasonable cost. I have some passive income. I have savings. I don't have consumer debt. I've built a business that generated serious revenue once, even if I didn't personally walk away rich from it.

But mentally I feel like I'm missing the final piece of the puzzle.

Part of me feels like I'm genuinely close to figuring things out. Like I've accumulated enough experience that if I make the right next move, I could finally build something sustainable and provide a really good life for myself and the people I care about.

The other part of me feels like a complete loser.

I'm 26, working part-time in fast food, my business has fallen off, and eventually my family are going to start asking me what I'm actually doing with my life.

I don't really have friends either. I have my partner and family, but socially, that's basically it.

I have one main hobby—a sport that I take seriously and that keeps me fit, strong and gives me some structure—but outside of that, business and trying to figure out my future occupy most of my headspace.

I think that's partly why this situation feels bigger than just "what job should I get?"

I don't necessarily need to become a millionaire. I want independence, purpose, financial security, people around me, and to feel like I'm actually moving forward rather than permanently being "almost there."

So I'm interested in hearing from people who are a bit older or who have been through something similar.

If you were 26, had low living costs, ~$1,000/month coming in passively, some savings you didn't want to touch, no meaningful debt, a supportive partner, experience building a nearly $1m-revenue e-commerce business, and some skills in sales/content/marketing—but no stable career—what would you do with the next 2–3 years?

Would you take the safe route and build a career?

Would you use this period of relatively low responsibility to take another big swing?

Or would you try to do both?

I feel like I'm standing at a crossroads and I'm terrified of looking back at 30 and realizing I spent the second half of my 20s chasing the wrong thing.

P.S. Unavoidable but relevant situation - my girlfriends mother is extremely difficult. She is nosey, judgemental and bordering on becoming obsessed with me. She wants me to be financially steady so I can save up for a house but also keep her daughter close. Before I started business I moved up north and it sent her haywire.

She had me down for a chest OR me moving (to work an entry level job) would convince her daughter to move away and leave her forever. Its tricky to explain and maybe doesn't matter but worth mentioning she has the ability to emotionally blackmail, and ruminate on things you've said from months ago.

Technology My little brother is not practicing online safety

Upvotes

My brothers been friending random people on Roblox. He is saying that they’re alt accounts when they’re over 260 of them. He is getting mad at me when I’m trying to keep him safe. If you play Roblox, you will know that it is a predator superstore. I’m very nervous that he won’t stop friending these people. My mom isn’t taking this seriously enough. Any advice?

Education I need some advice on what to do.

Upvotes

Hi i am on vg3 which is equivalent to last year of highschool but in norway. I am really struggling in math but i need that class if i want to study the thing i want to become. I also have a few other hard classes and i am soo tempted to switch to an easier class and take math class next year by myself(privatist). This could give me an easier year and i could focus more on the different classes and possibly get better grades.

Other What do we do? Neighbor's pit bull attacked.

Upvotes

We live in an apartment complex, and our neighbor's unleashed dog lunged at my s/o to attack him. My s/o keeps a utility knife on him, so before the dog could latch on his arm, he pulled it out to defend himself, obviously injuring the dog. The dog backed off, and we called police, despite our neighbor telling us not to. Not so we could press charges (he escaped injury due to his quick response), but we were concerned about the dog.

The police did not come, but Animal Control did. After checking on the dog, she said that the dog should only need stitches. She also said we needed to contact our property management. I reluctantly called and left a message. (We aren't the type to like getting people into trouble.)

Did we do the right thing, and is there anything more we should do to cover ourselves legally?

Other What to do when your SSN was leaked on a data breach?

Upvotes

I was part of the CareCloud breach and apparently my SSN was included in the leaked information. Nothing has happened yet as far as I can tell, but I am kind of freaking out because I have no idea what I am supposed to do from here. I have never dealt with something like this before and the fact that it is my SSN specifically is what is getting to me. I would rather do whatever I can now instead of finding out months from now that someone opened something in my name

Life Decisions I want to quit my studies but I’m afraid I will regret it

Upvotes

23M. I’m currently studying abroad Veterinary Medicine because my country (France) is absolutely horrible to study this, therefore I went to Spain to study this topic in a private university.

I’m about to enter the 3rd year out of 5, the problem is that I didn’t pass a lot of exams because those last 2 years I wasn’t really studying for this and therefore I only passed 4 school subjects out of 18ish (which is the number of total subjects in those 2 years). I can confidently say that I’m not happy there, even though I have friends and a good social life I don’t have any motivation to study and tbh I’m skipping a ton of classes because I don’t feel good going to class anymore. I find joy in temporary pleasure like going to a fast food, smoking weed or going out and getting drunk, but at the end of the day, I’m missing my GF (I will get back to this later) and I’m just not happy with anything related to my studies. I really wanted to be a vet because I like the job and all but it’s definitely not a vocation, it’s more something I think I enjoy.

My parents are in their 60s and their generation (at least for them it’s true) is all about working and having a good career, so their influence on me, even though I said multiple times that I’m not having a good time there and also that I struggle to study and stay motivated, is to say to keep my head up and do good. They have some kind of high expectations of me since ( not to brag) I’m gifted intelligence wise, although they didn’t force me to do it just to clarify. But as I said, it’s been two years that I don’t do much because I don’t find any happiness or interest in my classes, and that every time that I’ve to go back to Spain I’m just sad as shit, because I’m leaving my family etc but also leaving my girlfriend.

We’ve been together for 3 years now and it’s the healthiest relationship I’ve ever had in my life. It’s like I’m dating my best friend. Our relationship is objectively not toxic just to be clear, she always supports me in whatever I do and she’s a shoulder I can cry on or where I can get advice. Anyway every time I’m going back to Spain we’re both having a hard time being separated and even though we can see each other every month or so it’s still hard without her.

Right now I’m supposed to go back this Sunday and tbh my guts and everything in me tells me to just quit this, to go back to her and find something else to do job wise. I really feel like those last 2 years showed me by my lack of motivation and discipline but also because it’s not in my personality to be a leader (which is quite important for this job since you need to make decisions here and there, be rigorous etc like a doctor) that this project is just shit for me.

On the other hand I would also like to try really hard and maybe succeed in this, but I’m afraid that even if I succeed I happen to not like this job, after having « lost » 5 years or more of my life. But maybe if I quit I will regret it later knowing that I didn’t do enough

I’m more than happy to provide more information if needed, note also that money isn’t a problem for me and I have some cash set aside if my parents happen to cut me off financially (they pay the university and my living expenses now) so living on my own until I do something else is not a problem

TLDR: should I stay in vet school even though I’m 99% sure that it’s not for me and that I’m not having a good time or should I quit and pursue something else and be happy along with my girlfriend

Family Loss Munchausen’s and Murder? How Do I Get Someone to Investigate My Dad’s Death?

Upvotes

A year ago, my dad died from complications of cancer metastasized to almost every major organ. But I suspect elder abuse committed by his wife. As a mostly bedridden housebound disabled person, I couldn’t protect him. A few days before his death her family in Canada, told me that she’s a former palliative care nurse who was forced to surrender her license ahead of a criminal investigation, has a history of abusing those under her care; and a diagnosis of Munchhausen’s.

One of her relatives, a fellow nurse, called the hospital (the wife refused to give them my contact information) from Canada for almost a week trying to get someone to pay attention to her concerns about the danger the wife presented.  Even filing a report with Adult Protective Services.

According to a friend of his and her family, five months before his death, my 80 year old father left the hospital against medical advice (something I’ve never known him to do)  while delirious. During his time being sick at home, her family continually asked her whether she was giving him his antibiotics properly and insisting that she take him back to the hospital. Their concerns were met with vague answers and excuses.

If she cared whether he lived or died, why didn’t she take him back to the hospital when she saw he wasn’t improving? Instead, with all of her clinical knowledge, she just she watched him get sicker and sicker. Extreme headaches, bouts of delirium, an infection that was killing him. At what point did did she begin to suspect lung cancer? And if she didn’t suspect cancer, as a former palliative nurse, why didn’t she? If she was worried about the fact that he was getting so ill, why didn’t she call family?

He was diagnosed less than two weeks before he died, during his last hospital admission. A doctor told my dad’s friend that the infection would kill him within five days.

During his final two weeks of life, his wife lied to me constantly about his condition and repeatedly granted and took back permission for medical staff to speak to me.

She isolated him. No one unconnected to her was told he was sick. To this day, I don’t know whether my dad’s best friend knows that he died.  I asked her so often to please,  please, go through his phone, or to ask him when he had a lucid moment who he wanted to talk to, please, give me the numbers and I will call them. Though she said she would do so, she never did. The entire time she seemed supremely unconcerned.

She finally told me he was dying four days before he did. Because I didn’t know, when I spoke to him I tried to keep his spirits up, not knowing that each conversation could be the last.  She kept talking as if they were just waiting for biopsy results to decide his treatment. At the same time telling me they kept having to postpone the biopsy until they cleared the infection. Except, she’d had the antibiotics helping clear his infection discontinued against medical advice.  He never had a chance, he died locked in his body, unable to make his wishes known.

I think there’s something seriously wrong regarding the death of my dad. He spent 20 years in the military serving his country. He was a Vietnam vet who participated in operations “Eagle Pull” and “Baby Lift”. And he died in the VA Medical Center under questionable circumstances. There is something obscene about that.

And I seem to be the only one who cares. What do I do? So I haven’t been able to get the authorities to do a proper investigation. As I said, I’m disabled…so, broke and have limited energy. How do I get his death investigated by the authorities? It’s true he was cremated. But most of the evidence of what happened to him is in his medical records.

TL;DR: I suspect my dad’s Canadian widow, who has a surrendered nursing license, a history of medically abusing those under her care, and a diagnosis of Munchausen’s of killing my dad. How do I get someone to take it seriously?
