Just in Time for school: Duolingo Math has 3 New Features! 🎉

Upvotes

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m back with another product update. This time it's about Duolingo Math!

Over the last few months, our Math team has been working on new features designed to give students more support when they get stuck, so they can keep learning instead of giving up or leaving the app to search for answers elsewhere.

And if you’re asking, “...wait, Duolingo teaches math?” Yes, we do! Duolingo Math is already available right inside the Duolingo app.

Our goal with Math isn’t to replace what students are learning in school, or become another worksheet app. We want to give students a way to practice math that feels approachable, bite-sized, and (hopefully) genuinely fun. Just like our other courses!

Duolingo Math can be especially helpful if you’re:

  • a parent looking for an easy way to help your child build confidence in math
  • a teacher looking for another way to encourage students to practice
  • supporting a student who could use extra practice or explanations when they get stuck

❓What’s new (and coming soon…)

Three new Math features are rolling out broadly to learners. Availability may vary a bit as we roll them out in waves:

🧠 Math Coach
When students encounter a new Math topic, their personal Math Coach, Eddy, is there to help! He introduces new concepts, walks through examples, and gives students the opportunity to ask questions along the way.

💡 In-Lesson Support
When a student is working through a lesson and comes across a problem they don’t know how to solve, they can ask for help right there in the exercise. The goal is to provide just enough guidance to help them understand the problem and keep learning—without having to leave the lesson.

Multistep Problems
Sometimes students understand a new concept but aren’t quite ready to tackle problems completely on their own. Multistep Problems guide students through the problem one step at a time, helping them build the skills and confidence they need for independent practice.

A few notes upfront:

  • These features have been rolling out gradually over the past few months and are becoming more broadly available. If your student has already tried them, we’d love to hear what you think!
  • Availability may vary depending on device and app version. If you think your student should have access but doesn’t, please chime in here and our Community team will try to assist.
  • As always, we’ll continue iterating on these features based on what we learn.

Once your student has had a chance to try them, we’d love to hear:

  • Which features has your student tried?
  • Did they help your student better understand what they were learning?
  • Was there anything your student found confusing or frustrating?
  • Is there anything you’d change?
  • What else would make Duolingo Math more helpful -or more fun- for your student?

As always, thanks for trying new things with us and sharing thoughtful feedback. Hearing about your student’s experience genuinely helps shape what the team builds next. 💚

Look at this new Duolingo feature Just got back on Duolingo after 1.5 years away... what the heck is this battery nonsense?

Upvotes

I just got back on the app after a while away... shocked to see that they replaced the classic hearts system with this BS battery thing. It drains when you get a question correct, you occasionally get more batteries during lessons, and most of the big lessons will use up your full battery.

What the heck? Is this app not designed to make language learning easy, fun, and accessible? Now I begrudgingly boot it up because I still want to learn Japanese, but I'm seriously considering jumping ship and uninstalling.

Oh, and don't even get me started on how much they've leaned into generative AI. They seem to use it for ALL their Super Duolingo adverts and it's so noxious and obvious.

General Discussion Giving up!

After a long time, I’ve decide to let go!!! Feel so bad about it tho!😩😩

Felt like I’ve not been using Duo to learn anything new, felt like I’m only doing it for the streak at this point.

Has anyone let go of their streak? And how do you get past the guilt? 🤣

Bug? You can't backspace the "i" in "dispise".

Duolingo Math Question Duolingo Math was a game changer for me! Please add Physics, Chemistry, and Biology!

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share how much Duolingo Math has helped me. After being away from studying for years, the bite-sized, interactive format made learning math feel approachable and fun again. Learning through trial, error, and instant feedback works so much better for me than long video lectures.

I am now super consistent with my daily streak, but my ultimate goal is to study Biochemistry!

I would REALLY love to see Duolingo expand into STEM subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The interactive, visual style would be perfect for understanding core science concepts, equations, and lab concepts without fluff.

Does anyone else wish we had Duolingo Science? Duo, please make it happen!

I have missed the streak two times when it was 365 days or 360 days. If I never missed that it would be 2400 days atleast. I still wonder how the hell did I even miss those days. But it's specifically on new year time. I feel very bad guys. 😔

Two years to this day, I started my language learning journey with Duo, starting with French and Spanish (which makes it a very meta duo-duo, if you get my drift).

I'm currently at scores 70 and 68, respectively, and have added two more courses - Chess and Vietnamese - along the way.

It's been a fun journey and I still want to learn more.

What's a language/course that you have enjoyed and would recommend?

Constructive Criticism I hate the fact that progression bar moves the way it does. A lot at first exercises and barely on last ones.

Upvotes

I know it supposed to help you continue the lesson because you see more progress already made so it supposed to make you want keep going, but all it does it's making me extremely annoyed, like someone trying to deceive me and hoping I won't notice. I know, it's silly, but that's how it makes me feel.

But I'm curious if more people are annoyed or angered by that, or most of you don't care?

General Discussion If Duolingo completely removed XP, leagues, chests and streaks tomorrow, would you still use it the same amount?

Upvotes

I’m curious how much of your Duolingo habit is actually about learning vs. the gamification.

If XP, leagues, chests, and streaks disappeared tomorrow, would you still use Duolingo the same amount?

Or would you slowly stop opening the app?

I'm already able to watch some movies with Spanish subtitles :) Even though I have to rewind, it is fun. I started with the "Mexico 86" movie. Also started a series "Forbidden Woman / La Mujer Prohibida"

General Discussion New words

Upvotes

I’m doing German and the app seems to have updated to (1) include lots of new words and (2) force you to pass the last lesson before moving on to the next section.

So I’m stuck doing a test of words I’ve never seen before. And the test even refuses to accept words you do know because it wants you to answer with the new alternative. It sucks.
