General Discussion If Duolingo completely removed XP, leagues, chests and streaks tomorrow, would you still use it the same amount?
I’m curious how much of your Duolingo habit is actually about learning vs. the gamification.
If XP, leagues, chests, and streaks disappeared tomorrow, would you still use Duolingo the same amount?
Or would you slowly stop opening the app?

You can only A/B test with the users you have, which feels the only gap.
I wish streaks gave us weekends off, or somesuch. ;-)

Or holidays. Christmas, Thanksgiving, I’m doing Spanish lessons. I’ve had eye surgery and came home to make sure I got a lesson done. A handful of grace-days would be awesome. Happy to earn them, too. I’d feel better about that than using “streak repairs.”

Yeah, the streak thing is motivating. Everyone knows you have to be consistent, so getting some kind of reminder plus an absurd little dopamine ping for checking off that practice, even a super short single lesson for the day, is helpful, is reinforcing.
This is the only “game” I indulge. And really, really—is there some language learning that takes place without our at least noting our own measures of progress? Without amusement involved? Maybe they cram a language into recruits heads in the military. Cool. Cool. Don’t let anyone stop you from the cramming. Is learning in a class with a textbook divided into chapters so much different? Color, humor, songs, culture-all kinds of enrichment typically go into language learning. OG language learning is life-falling down, running around, eatingdrinkinglaughinglisteningspeaking. Why are people who hate the cutesy-ness of Duolingo here complaining all the time? There are other language apps, go, fly, be free? Learn, you serious as a heartattackers, stop whingeing around.

Nope. I've used other language learning methods, both apps and stuff like books and never ended up sticking with it. And there are many times when I was tired or not feeling in the mood where I forced myself to open the app and do something to maintain the streak or compete when I absolutely wouldn't have been motivated enough at that moment otherwise.

Probably no. Streak motivates me to open the app and do at least one lesson even if I don't really feel like it. This also helps me to sit down and open the app, which sometimes leads to longer learning sessions.
I think on days I'm already motivated enough the gamification aspects does not help or even hinder, but on days I'm not motivated enough these things help. Obviously language learning will happen on days I'm able to do more, but those days happen more frequently if I'm already opening the app even if I don't really want to learn at that moment.
•
u/sdep73 17h ago
I'm using Duolingo to learn Spanish in conjunction with taking courses taught by a real teacher, and yes I would still keep using it if all of the gamification aspects were removed.
Within a couple of weeks of starting my 2 year streak I set my profile to private so I wouldn't have to take part bin leagues. I also never use the 'Early Bird' and 'Night Owl' chests that apparently give you an XP boost because I don't care about XP. The only thing I do sometimes use is the gems, and that's only for buying some extra time to complete timed recap lessons, where the app deliberately gives you barely enough time for the 2nd level and even less for the 3rd.
•
u/ThorpeThorThorpe 17h ago
So…that part which I completely IGNORE somehow is the only part that another USES. Hmm. Could be that people have different learning styles and preferences.

I loved duolingo well before it added any of it, I would certainly still use it as much.
You're really asking whether we're more intrinsically versus extrinsically motivated to learn. I came to the app because its a convenient and fun tool among a number of others I use consistently that aren't gamified or aren't gamified to the same degree. And thats to say nothing of the books I use outside of tech at all. Duo is a warm up when im having coffee in the morning, the real stuff comes later, but its all part of a regime.
•
u/Yavkov 17h ago
I would like to keep my streak, but I would be happy to lose the xp and leagues.
Sometimes, I end up doing zero learning because I’m just trying to gain xp to not get demoted out of diamond league. And I have an easy and fast way of getting xp, it just doesn’t help me with learning anything.
So I might end up using Duolingo more, to spend more time doing lessons that would otherwise give me less xp per minute but I continue with the learning process.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Never liked chests and streaks, but I have mixed feelings about XP and leagues. On rare occasion leagues motivate me to push myself a little bit more if I've already done a lot that week.
As for XP, I like how it (kinda) shows incremental progress but it unfortunately isn't true representative data. It would be amazing if all lessons were 10xp again.
I really just use duo to explore and try out different languages, but I think there is more gamification to it than just the leagues, XP, chests, and streaks that keep me coming back.

Most of the time, I just care about advancing. I'm fast and accurate, and accumulate a lot of xp. Because of that, I will often do 15+ min a day, sometimes up to 45, so I've won diamond league and tournament several times now. But I also skip days, I rarely look at my XP or standing, and I didn't even know it was a thing when I first started doing it.

The premise of this question makes no sense at all. Learning requires practice. Gamification increases practice and, therefore, increases learning. Gamification and learning are not opposites as your first question implies. It is as if you are saying learning only counts if it is dreary drudge-work that you have to force yourself to do despite it not being enjoyable.
•
u/BelltowerApologist Native Learning 7h ago
The gamification is solely to build dependency and keep users in-app as much as possible, and what they're hoping for is that you spend money. That is not healthy. It's just been normalized by the community here.
If a person cannot focus without receiving constant stimulation, that's a condition that requires psychiatric evaluation to treat at best and a dopamine addiction at worst.

I would use it the same amount or even more. Somehow the timed boosts stress me, because I'm also competitive. I wish I could just turn my profile private, and leave the XP race madness, but I can't. Instead I spend all my boosters on pronunciation exercises in the training section, and when I have used them up I finish a unit. Without the XP race I would instead do two or three units a day, but I would still do the pronunciation practice, because the sentences help me remember the vocab and gender (I'm learning German at level 93), and I also analyse the sentence including the case + gender and translate it into Danish, because I'm learning it from English. I usually do one in under a minute, and that's 60 XP. Easy XP, but I wish they didn't exist.

I'd they removed everything expect the streak, I'd stay, but if they kept everything but the streak, I'd delete it very quickly...
•
u/TomeThugNHarmony4664 14h ago
I enjoy the games and they do motivate me because I am competitive. I will be honest that when I have a multiplier going on I won’t stop and read about why an answer is right or not until the multiplier is over. When I don’t have a boost, I will actually write down phrases or words they use but haven’t officially taught us and review WHY something was right more.
However, I also listen to Spanish language music; turn on Spanish closed captions for familiar movies; watch futbol in Spanish, especially during the World Cup; and I do practice verb conjugation and other grammar outside of Duo. SomI’d probably do Duo a bit less, and do those other things bit more. But I would still spend a good amount of time on Duo, because this is the first time in my life that I actually feel like i am learning some language.
•
u/No-Lifeguard-5308 14h ago
The streak definitely works for most of us, and at least in my case, having an achievable miner (eight) of really small lessons in units which then add up to score increases really helps as well. Many days I’d rather just quit after one or two lessons, but I push through to complete a unit pretty regularly.

I would be fine if they removed all those things. I almost always ignore them. Occasionally I’ll forget myself and compete, but it really interferes with the learning, especially when I try to optimize next day triple points at the expense of doing lessons.
On the other hand, it seems to work for other people. It’s easier for me to ignore things that exists than then it is for other people for whom they motivates to not have them.
So I just try to do the lessons and ignore just about everything else. And I am very pleased with my language learning progress, so what’s not to like?
Edit: honestly, now that I think about it ,I have almost a two year streak, so that does motivate me daily to not break that— although I’m very mildly ashamed to admit that. As to Everything else though, I wish development effort would rather prioritize fixing mistakes, annoyances, and improving their speech to text recognition during conversations. Really sucks when Lily goes off on a major tangent about something the engine misinterpreted.

I don’t do it for the leagues and XP and gems and chests and all that other game crap. I have a 7-year streak and it’s not because of a silly “weekend quest.”
If all that worthless shit disappeared, they’d have to invest more in actual content that helps you learn, and I’d probably use it MORE.
In my first two years, I learned enough to use my target language (Spanish) exclusively during two international trips, and I frequently use it at work and in restaurants. Once they changed to “the path” it was less about learning and about nursing the user along a predetermined sequence of motions. When they killed the forums, it went downhill fast. The lessons weren’t perfect, and the forums provided a way to get answers from experts, peers, and explore discussions which broadened understanding. Now we’re trapped in a robotic, sterile owl hell.
It was around that time I started exploring additional languages. A year later I settled on French. After four years, I’m nowhere near where I was after 2 years of Spanish, and I blame gamification entirely.

I’d like to think so…but the reality is that the gamified features of Duolingo do motivate me at the margins. I don’t regularly check how I’m going in the leagues and have opted out of notifications, but if I have a friends quest I feel I don’t want to let the other person down, especially if they have a long quest streak.
