News - Local Christchurch man starts petition to pause NZ Post closures

This appears to be the other stores closing confirmed back in January:

Elmwood, Papanui, Greers Rd, Redwood, North Avon, Burwood Hospital, Forte in the central city, Dallington, Redcliffs, Wainoni, Aranui, Linwood, Woolston, Hillmorton, Hoon Hay, Opawa, Prebbleton, Hei Hei, Ilam, Templeton, and outlets at Christchurch Airport and Christchurch Hospital.

Not included in this January list is the Unichem Pharmacy changes and the box lobby moving. These changes are a result of Minister for State Owned Enterprises, Simeon Brown changing the minimum number of required postal service points from 880 to 400.

Personally I think it’s ridiculous that the country’s second largest city will not have postal services in the CBD. How are we going to make the inner city thrive when the Government want to remove basic services from the CBD?

News - Local ‘Pour concrete between the rails’ and give Hornby a cycleway, Christchurch mayor says

And "That railway line only gets one train down it a year, if it's lucky," Christchurch mayor Phil Mauger says.

Personally, I don’t think this is a bad idea. We’re not expecting any major train lines to be built down here anytime soon and if that ever changes. Removing a cycleway would be much cheaper.

Politics South West Baptist Church

Upvotes

Do these business cards they hand out work on anyone?

Hey random person just trying to exist in central Christchurch. Here’s a card about my church! Oh, cool. I love being handed random business cards from churches telling me I’m gonna burn in hell if I don’t attend their mega church.

I am an American who was raised strictly southern Baptist so I’m familiar with how much proselytizing is encouraged but my patience for it is dwindling.

I am not going to be rude because they’re sending out young teens off to do this, but nothing turns me off from an organization more than pushing fear based tactics.

Social Looking for experiences regarding cat fostering with SPCA

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I've been looking into potentially cat fostering (non neonatal kittens, as I work full time, although two of those days can be worked from home). I see this can be something signed up for with the SPCA in Christchurch.

I've done some research online, so I am just now looking for an NZ perspective as most of the material online relates to the US. Does anyone have experience doing this who could answer these questions?

  1. Is an entire kitten proof room required, or can half a room be used and sectioned with perhaps a playpen?

  2. Does the SPCA have any event days or something where I can learn more about fostering? It seems like you just express interest via their online form, but before signing up I want to ensure I can do it.

  3. Some websites mention hot soapy water / hot wash is enough to clean items between fosters. Others say that isn't good enough, and you either need to chuck out any bedding / toys used. Is that true? I don't mind replacing those disposable scratch pads as those are just cardboards, but chucking out beds and blankets does seem awfully wasteful, I so want to check if that is correct

  4. A lot of websites mention you can clean the floor and other items using something called "Rescue". Do we have an equivalent of Rescue in NZ?

  5. My house is carpeted - what do you recommend to cover the floor for easy cleaning / sanitising?

  6. Are there any NZ based resources that are good for learning about cat fostering?

Thank you so much!

Social Fun Team Bonding in Christchurch

Upvotes

Hey Chch 👋

Im new to Christchurch!

I'm a relatively new manager in a hotel F&B department and I'm looking at organising something for my team of around 20 people, mostly in their mid-20s.

It's been a bit of a transition period with a new manager, new processes and ways of doing things, so I'd really like to organise something that gets everyone away from work, mixes people up a bit and genuinely helps the team reconnect.

Ideally something that involves a bit of fun/competition + food/drinks + plenty of opportunity to actually talk and hang out.

Some ideas I've already come across:

Escape rooms

Game/quiz nights

Laser tag

Go-karts

Games/social venues

Cocktail or cooking experiences

A Christchurch scavenger hunt

Something around the CBD followed by food/drinks

Any help would be appreciated !

Twin Homebirth

Upvotes

There was a mother not long ago looking for a new midwife, as her current midwife would not support her with home birthing twins. I think she was due around now. Does anyone know if she found a midwife to do this? Of if she did indeed homebirth?

Do Ara still do hairdressing services?

Upvotes

I’ve tried contacting them, but haven’t got a response. Is this something they still do? Or maybe I emailed an old address. I’m on a budget and just need a trim.

Thank you!

Question for Christchurch / Canterbury Redditors — particularly anyone who has dealt with Aoraki Legal regarding estate matters.

Upvotes

How much responsibility should a client reasonably be expected to take for chasing their own lawyer to get a matter progressed?

I'm interested in hearing people's experiences with Aoraki Legal, and other law firms, particularly where a matter has become prolonged or complicated.

At what point does “the client needs to stay engaged and follow things up” turn into:

Isn't the lawyer supposed to be managing the file?

I'm not talking about clients who disappear, fail to provide documents, don't answer questions or otherwise hold their own matter up.

I'm talking about the other situation: the client is engaged, responsive, asking reasonable questions and repeatedly following up — but substantive answers or progress still seem to take an unusually long time.

I've got my own experience with Aoraki Legal which has prompted the question, but I'm genuinely interested in hearing from others before drawing conclusions.

And if anyone from Aoraki happens to be reading this, I'd be particularly interested in their view of where the client's responsibility ends and the firm's responsibility begins.
