Maybe the egg ate the kitten and the snake ate the egg. Then it would bite its own tail and become ouroboros. Just like the golden ring Aes Sedai wear.
I like to imagine the snake creeping up under the chicken like, "Excuuuuse me... just gonna... squeeeeeeze on in here for a sec... pardon me... omnomnomnomnom...."
Indeed, such an excellent goodthink on reddit must be rewarded with some meaningless pixel awards. Alas, none to distribute so I must resort to the upward facing arrow to give a useless internet point in a thread that ceased to matter 2 minutes after its creation.
So I think the hen had the snakes head pinned but it had wrapped itself around her leg, I think that's why she was also sorta smothering the snake, maybe she was trying to pin it down or something.
Correct. I have chickens. They're so much dumber than you'd think possible. 100% possible the hen didn't realize the snake was there. Absolutely bonkers levels of stupidity. Mine have gotten trapped under doors, snuck out of their run while being hunted by a hawk, slipped through the fence but then not figure out how to get back to the food and water... We have bred them to be idiots and they're basically best in class.Ā
I grew up on a farm and sold eggs for a dollar a dozen by the road with a plywood sign from when I was like 8 to 14 and the hens never gave a shit when there were black snakes in the nests. I bet I threw an average of 2 per week out of the coop with my pitchfork.
She probably didn't realize the snake was there? Since it's tail was behind the shelf, it just snuck up from behind and probably didn't feel something was moving.
Not only is he attracted to the eggs, but they do an amazing job keeping harmful pests like rodents away. Pests that can do a whole lot more damage than him just stealing an egg here and there.
Tbf, a bite from a rat snake isn't bad at all, if you even get bit. A bit scary sure, but won't hurt much and I highly doubt any venomous snake would be under an alive chicken without killing the chicken already
It would help for them to know that non-venomous snakes don't have fangs, which I guess isn't exactly common knowledge, and their teeth are (usually) goofy, thin little guys. For me, the scariest part of a bite is seeing it coming. It's a very primal fear, even if it's a little bitty guy, the kind that makes time feel slowed down.
Thatās true for little non-venomous ones. But large non-venomous constrictor bites are a problem. Think pythons and boas. Their teeth are long and like meat hooks, pierces straight into flesh with little effort (snakes donāt have strong jaw muscles), itās gonna bleed a lot.
have been bitten by juvenile/young adult boas a few times, can concur. teeth are so sharp like basically needles. no pain, barely even feel it but yes it does bleed quite a bit sometimes lol
It's a rat snake, they're notorious for breaking into chicken coops and eating eggs, but they themselves are very rarely a danger to the chickens due to their size. (The snake is far more likely to get injured by the chicken). A lot of people keep them around for pest control.
If there's ever a recall of Captain Crunch cereal for foreign materials in the product, there will be 75,000 articles that day all titled like "Oops, All Glass Shards"
And they're all going to get renamed to "Product Recall: Captain Crunch Cereal Contaminated with Glass Shards" three days later when it turns out someone died from the contaminated cereal and suddenly joking about it is very tasteless.
There's a huge snake that lives in the shed behind my friend's house. They've named it Kitty, for just that reason.
They say you usually smell her before you see her. Ever since I heard that I sniff a LOT more than I used to when getting a piece of wood off of the pile outside. 0_o
When I was in high school I was friends with a girl whoās room had a FUNKY ass smell but she herself was really clean and always smelled good. Wondered for years. At a party of hers one night, talking to her bro who says he has snakes and Iām like no way Iāve never seen a snake here! She had a massive walk in closet in her bedroom so thatās where her brother kept like 40 snakes lol so yes, they do smell but itās gotta be a lot of them. Idk if youād smell just one mixed in with logs
You can smell some types of snakes, especially their dens in the spring after they've been stinking it up in there all winter. It's not a very strong smell for me, and my sense of smell is excellent, so I don't think everyone can smell them. Not sure about rat snakes though, I only know you can smell copperheads and garter dens.
Rat snakes (the one in the post here) very much have a musky smell, and seem to kick it up a notch if you scoop them up to relocate them and they're bothered by it.
Otherwise, they're almost completely docile, and if you handle them right they're even unbothered by that. But! Like most things, every snake has its own personality and some do not take kindly to being bothered.
Even then, musky smell and maybe a hiss, even seen it once or twice where it seemed like it was playing dead? Those times were odd for sure, as I don't think they're typically known for that.
Rat snake! Just like this video, they can get really big, but they're almost completely harmless and will just ignore you. I've relocated plenty just by gently scooping them up and moving them to a new spot, with no issues 90% of the time.
The other 10% they might kick up the musk a bit, or get a lil hissy, but I've never had one actually try to bite.
I had a problem with mice chewing up wires in my riding lawn mower and other things until I started noticing what I later identified as eastern milk snakes. Those things are fucking dicks though. They do not fuck off when you walk towards them like garter snakes and the do NOT adhere to the "don't fuck with me and I won't fuck with you agreement I usually have with snakes, spiders, etc. I had a little building that I did things like woodworking in and one day I turn around and there is a huge milk snake between me and the only door. I grabbed a broom and tried to do the shew shew thing and it just coiled up and started strike at the broom. I was like, dude, you broke the agreement, and I hockey pucked that fucker out the door.
Was not really unexpected to me because on the back wall under the shelf the hen was on I could see what I thought looked like the tail end of a snake and it ended up being that š
Yes I do, my husband and I almost make a game out of it. With his military background and him always working security type jobs and stuff he has ingrained me being situationally aware and like if we go somewhere randomly he'll ask me how many exits have we passed and stuff like that so I do notice a lot of stuff. Although none of that actually helps my clutchiness in the fact that I cannot walk across a flat surface without tripping š¤£š¤£
Yep, having raised pigeons, chickens and ducks, I was fairly sure there was an unwelcome visitor. The tail kind of gave it away, but damn that was a long ass snake!
I have never raised any kind of birds, having grown up in the city and didn't move to the country till I was an adult but that really to me wasn't that long of a snake. I have rescued much longer from my aunt in law's dogs
We had them on the ranch. And I have no idea why you would send the smallest (youngest) kid to get eggs, but they did.
I guess it was my reward for driving the tractor when I wasnāt supposed to lol
But yea man, those things can be mean. Iād sneak in to get eggs with my little rubber coated metal basket, and it was 50/50 if I got back with eggs. I gave up on the top row, as I wasnāt tall enough to pull that off quietly. But yea, some mornings, they just sit and let you tcb, and other times one goes off, and then they all go off haha.
Iād come screaming back to the house. Grandma would say, itās ok, youāll get the hang of it eventually.
That fueled nightmares, as it meant youāre going back out there tomorrow, like it or not.
Bro same. Ours were free range and sometimes theyd be just out and about and id look in the general direction of a rooster so hed run me down and peck my ass at the door until I was bleeding
One year we raised wild turkeys from eggs. Over half of them drowned in their water dish, despite it requiring them to stick their heads in sideways past a safety bar to do so. We finally ended up with about six in an old corn crib, and my scrawny preteen ass was assigned egg duty. When I opened the door, they would stand up, flare their wings, and stomp their own eggs. My dad didnāt believe me and thought I was just scared of them until he witnessed it, and then my chore became fattening them up because dad was over turkeys.
The weird thing is he hated chickens from his own childhood collecting eggs, so I donāt know why he thought some giant prehistoric bird would be easier to handle.
That's an Eastern Blacksnake which can and will bite but isn't venemous or anything. I've never been bit by one directly but they'll proper scratch up a webster pole.
I think the chicken didn't even realize the snake. Up until he lifts her, where you see the snake coiled around the chickens' leg, it sees it and panics.
I think he was trying to not get bitten by a snake. He didn't want to stick his hands under there because until he got the chicken off he couldn't know it had an egg in is mouth. Sticking your hand, blind, where you know where is a snake mouth, isn't a great idea, so he was trying to coax her off of it. Also chickens can be down right evil if you piss them off, but I'm guessing he was mostly trying up not get bitten by the snake.
Just tighten up the hen coop; perforated angle aluminum in the corners is simple.
Getting rid of rats, mice, chipmunks, etc, around GRAIN & SEED eating hens, is priceless.Ā
Snakes do it for free, with no poisons, traps, etc.
Yup. Pillowcases are frequently used to hold/transport snakes without overly stressing or hurting them. I was very pleased to see the snake survive the encounter.
