People have been making performative content for generations. It used to be call "film" and "TV". Only difference is that now everyone has access to it with internet access and cheap cameras.

FIlm and TV is an art form, social media posts are purely for validation. They're not comparable.

Plenty of film and TV are made for validation. Plenty of social media is a form of art. It's not as black and white as you think.

Yes, and people make fun of, criticize, and generally hate on tv/films that are overly performative, and/or are created to seek validation.

People do not generally criticize and hate on artistic social media posts, like music or actual artistic photography and whatever.

Do you see the difference? People don’t like inauthentic people doing inauthentic things for attention or validation

Any social media posts that might qualify as art aren't part of what people complain about. Obviously the statement I made sounds sweeping, but social media encompasses so much these days that there are bound to be exceptions. Youtube is technically social media but it's full of great content.

Think it's a pretty hard sell to say anything that takes as much effort and collaboration as a TV show or film could somehow be made purely for validation the same way a low-effort social media post made by a single person can be.

I went to a concert and the band was being so performative, like you could tell they were only on stage playing music because the audience was there

She's not filming a skit, which would be the actual equivalent of film and tv.  

As someone who filmed videos in random public places back in the day - yeah people often commented. If someone called me performative, I would have been like well yes in that I am literally performing a character..what a relief you saw the camera and didn't just think I was behaving like this for no reason. We often explained what we were making, what the scene was, etc. 

I think the vast majority of people would take issue with conflating narrative art with what influencers do. They don't conceptualize it the same  and they clealry do see it as an extension of individual self expression, which is why she's responding so negatively to the comment. Because it feels like a personal insult not a heckle of a public performance.
