During world war 2 the Japanese army performed some brutal experiments on Chinese prisoners. Treating frostbite is something that came out if those experiments. If you want more Google Unit 731, but it's pretty harrowing stuff.
The tldr is they keept really good notes about human experimentation that ended up having practical applications. The experiments were painful and violent usually resulting in death
