PSP 1000 and PSP Go side by side of night mode and XMB artwork of a Sokoban homebrew I made. PSP Go colors are clearly more vibrant but just wanted to note the blue hue on the phat is because it’s using the dark night mode theme.
Disclaimer : small bit of self-promo, but mostly I wanted to share what went into this.
I've loved the PSP since I was younger, and Sokoban is one of those games I keep coming back to. At some point those two old interests collided, and I started making PandaSokoban.
For artistic choices, my girlfriend loves pandas and I think they are cute. It seemed fun to make the game about moving sleeping baby pandas to their cushions instead of just pushing boring boxes.
It is written in Rust using AndrewAltimit's modern rust-psp fork. There’s not really reason that went into this, it just seemed to be the most current choice to start with. The same EBOOT runs on a real PSP and PPSSPP, although getting there reminded me that an emulator can sometimes be a little too forgiving.
One example was the PSP's data cache. Some overlays and vertices looked perfect in PPSSPP but disappeared or broke on hardware because I had not flushed the CPU-written data before the Graphics Engine read it. Text caused the opposite problem. The PSP's debug-print function worked on the console but did not show up in PPSSPP, so I ended up rendering the font as a normal texture.
Audio was another rabbit hole. My first version pushed PCM from the main loop, which tied frame pacing to the blocking audio output. It now has a small mixer running on its own PSP thread, with the game sending sound requests through atomic flags. The background track is a 32-second bamboo-garden loop generated during the build.
One thing is still broken. The in-game PCM music works, but the ATRAC3 track I packaged for the XMB does not play there. The icon animation and background work, but the XMB stays silent. If anyone here has successfully added SND0.AT3 music to a homebrew EBOOT, I would really appreciate advice on the encoding or PBP details. That part is still a mystery to me.
I also spent more time than expected on the little movements. The puzzle logic stays on a strict tile grid, while the panda and cushions move between tiles with subpixel animation. There are directional walk and push frames, small collision bumps, dust, shadows, idle breathing, sleeping effects, and a short level-clear animation. I tried to keep it readable on the PSP's 480 by 272 screen instead of filling it with effects. That in itself was a bit challenging, had to test a lot to make sure the game levels were solvable and fit at that resolution.
The game has 200 puzzles, undo, best-move tracking, day and night modes, and proper PSP savedata. Early saves worked in PPSSPP but could fail on real hardware because of the savedata key, so that needed its own migration and recovery system too.
All in a all it was very fun to build, I still enjoy Sokoban style puzzles a whole lot especially on the go on the PSP. I’ll continue to improve it/build other PSP games because it is so sooo rewarding, I just love that console. I have the PSP 1000 IPS mod coming soon too and I’m really excited about it.
PandaSokoban is available here if anyone wants to take a look:

It is a free release, donations and feedback welcome. A physical PSP requires custom firmware. I'm especially interested in hardware reports and any clues about that stubborn XMB audio.

also sometimes i wonder. was there ever a famous last stand of the psp. like with halo 2 and 3ds.

Me compré mi primera PSP, es el modelo 1000, nuevo directo de Japón.
I've been working on a native Windows port for a few months now for one of my favorite games from the PSP era, the game fully supports mouse and keyboard, unlimited FPS, various kinds of resolutions and control customization... I'm wasting a lot of time on this side project, you say it's worth continuing? I'd like to make it 100% multiplayer functional as well with mod support.
If I open a patreon, or similar, where to publish beta builds, how many would be interested?
EDIT: i open a discord server to keep yourself updated on the status of the project! Join here: https://discord.gg/XaPCfj26qz

Mom found those laying around the house and gave then to me after visiting, they belonged to my younger brother and he was a video game destroyer when we where kids.
Top is jailbroken and wont stay on if not connected to a charger, bottoms X button won't work.
Thing is my husband always wanted one when he was a kid but couldn't afford it and I thought about fixing them so he could use it.
Is it a dead case or are they fixable? Can I swap the pieces between those two a get a working one?

Good morning!
I need some help with a PSP 3001. I’m an electronics technician, but I specialize in a different area; I received a PSP motherboard with a missing component, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it is or what it's called.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just bought a PSP Go, and whenever I launch a game, it crashes or shuts down after a few seconds. Sometimes, I have to wait for an hour or hold down several buttons at the same time before I can turn it back on.
Could this be caused by the battery, or could it be related to the CFW?
It happens regardless of whether the charger is connected or not. Even when the charging cable is plugged in, the PSP still crashes or shuts down.
Second video:
I also have to try several times, randomly pressing different button combinations to get it to turn back on, just like in the second video. There doesn’t seem to be any consistent combination that works—it’s completely random.

So Today i just receive my psp 1000 that i bought used from china, but the system is 6.60 pro c2 infinity, And they include 64gb with bunch of chinese region (i guess because title are in chinese). and bunch of emulator that i wont probably use. So im think to format the sd card and install Ark 4. I werre thinking to factory reset my psp, should I do it or should I just format the Sd card and install new CFW and english version of the game?

I have a retroid pocket 5 and I love it. I have been emulating psp games on it but I have just been having the urge to play it natively despite a smaller screen and worse screen. I also love the idea of UMD even though I would still probably softmod it. I have never owned or even played on a psp before. Though I do collect PlayStation consoles
Is psp worth it over emulation?

I recently picked up a PSP1000, I'm loving it, but the screen is just so bad. I want something with more brightness and better colors, and I came across the laminated and Non laminated IPS displays. From the guide on Komstation, they're the same screen, so not as bright as the others (?). Wondering which I should go with. I love the glossy original faceplate with unified crystal, and kinda hate how the newly matte faceplate without logos just makes the PSP look like a generic handheld. What's the best option here? The laminated display is also about 50% more expensive (21 euros vs 35 euros for the laminated). Has anyone tried out the non-laminated version?

Hello reddittors.
It’s been some years since I took out my PSP. I spent quite some time to troubleshoot but can’t seem to find the answers to do so hoping someone can help.
So here’s some background. I’m trying to update myself to ARK-5.
Was running 5.50 Gen-D3. Tried to update to OFW 6.61 with this process from PSPunk & it got stuck in a 99% to 84% loop. Force shutdown at 99% as some past threads said. Devices boots up fine and shows in System as 6.61. & I know it’s not the full installation after attempting to install ARK-5, the device just does not automatically restart after running the “Game”
So I retried installation with Chronoswitch to 6.61, same 99%-84% loop, and force power off at 99%. ARK-5 does not install in this scenario. Attempted to install ARK-4 same outcome.
Thereafter I used chronoswitch to 6.60, thinking 6.61 file is corrupted. Stuck in same loop 99%-84%. System setting show 6.60, but unable to install ARK-5 or ARK-4.
I do read that OFW does check on hardware last 10% of the update, I could not recall if 10+ years ago my UMD was working fine. But I attached a video for someone to help.
So now that you’ve read until here, any idea how I should proceed? Or if there’s any way to revert to 5.50 GEN D3. Or I have to fix the UMD 🤔
Thanks in advance!
