There are good bullpens and there are bad bullpens. Then there's fifty feet of crap, and then there's us.
As of September 6, here are the Washington Nationals’ bullpen stats and how they rank across the league. (Source: FanGraphs)
IP: 646.2 (#2)
ERA: 5.08 (#29)
ERA- (ERA adjusted for park and league where 100 is average and lower is better): 119 (#29)
FIP: 4.95 (#29)
FIP- (FIP adjusted for park and league where 100 is average and lower is better): 116 (#29)
xFIP (Expected FIP where HR are calculated as 10.5% of Fly Balls induced): 4.80 (#29)
FIP-Based WAR: -2.9 (#29)
RA9-Based WAR: -3.5 (#30)
Saves: 34 (#21)
Blown Saves: 37 (#1)
Holds: 69 (#23)
K%: 18.9% (#29)
BB%: 10.3 (#21)
HR/9: 1.39 (#29)
H/9: 9.09 (#27)
WHIP: 1.47 (#26)
LOB% (Left on Base%): 69.6% (#24)
WPA (Win Probability Added): -7.28 (#29)
RE24 (Run Expectancy based on the 24 base-out states): -61.93 (#29)
Exit Velocity (mph): 89.4 (#28)
HardHit% (EV ≥ 95 mph): 40.5% (#29)
Barrel%: 8.4% (#29)
So basically, can’t strike batters out, can’t limit extra-base hits, can’t hold runners on base, and can’t do anything right.

Every Nationals Blown Save of 2026
This is per Baseball Reference.
- Somehow July 12th vs the Yankees didn't count as it only gave Andrew Alvarez a loss
- Some of these happened in games where the Nats still won
- Some of these happened as early as the 6th inning which makes the saves statistic rule weird to define

WaPo: MLB stars are training with ‘mad scientist’ undergrads in West Virginia
By Noah White
...Dozens of players — including Skenes, James Wood and Trey Lipscomb — make regular appearances between games and during the offseason...
“You just want to have everything at your disposal,” says Wood, the Washington Nationals’ all-star outfielder, who examined his hitting stance in West Virginia last year. The Nationals share more hitting and pitching metrics with players than most, including the sport’s ever-evolving advanced projective metrics, Wood said. But there’s something to knowing you’re consuming the latest stats folks have cooked up. “It’s always beneficial to see more,” he says. “Even if you need to sort through it.”
A year ago, he heard of the Mountaineers’ start-up from a teammate, Lipscomb, who had heard of it from a teammate. Players talk among themselves. Training facilities and practice quirks rarely remain underground for long. So Wood and Lipscomb acted quickly and made the three-hour drive.

Journalism WaPo: The Nationals’ top prospect is 18. He’s eyeing the majors before he turns 20.
By Danielle Allentuck
Devin Pearson, the Washington Nationals’ assistant general manager, looked on with awe. As the team’s Class High-A affiliate, the Wilmington Blue Rocks, waited out a recent rain delay in Jersey City, Eli Willits was playing golf in the visiting clubhouse...

Nationals OYOs
Anyone remember these guys? They were basically Lego figures of athletes. I found my old Bryce Harper one (he has seen better days). Curious if anyone remembers seeing these at Nats park cause I could have sworn they used to sell them there as well as online.

Nationals can’t spend like Dodgers, but they can start trying
While the Nationals do not have the financial might to pay Tucker $60 million annually — or the depth to take that sort of plunge and survive his disappointing season without drastically reducing their World Series odds for years to come — they are in a better position than most franchises to start taking financial risks this winter.
That might sound like an odd thing to say about the Nationals.
After Friday night’s 5-3 loss, they are nine games (67-76) under .500. They have also already exceeded last year’s win total in part because of their rational and disciplined approach to spending.
They allocated resources to coaching and technology last winter because those back-end costs offer more bang for the buck at this stage of their competitive cycle than a big-name producer might. That practical temperament, though, does not have to stretch indefinitely, nor do they have to apply it to every corner of the operation.
Consider the following: The Nationals have over $50 million coming off the books from players who are not even on the 40-man roster, according to FanGraphs, $35 million of which comes from Stephen Strasburg’s expiring contract. CJ Abrams and Cade Cavalli are the only players on next year’s roster due for a meaningful raise, and “meaningful” here is still less than $10 million.
If they stood pat, the Nats could theoretically enter 2027 with a substantially lower payroll than the 2026 Miami Marlins, whose $76 million payroll ranks last in MLB.
Read that and yell at the clouds, or the ownership group, or whoever else has not listened to the complaints of a beleaguered fanbase during the rebuild. While some would argue that this level of frugality is never worth it and that the Nationals owe their fans consistent spending, years of cheap behavior have created a window to make a splash in 2027.
