Dredging and tidal regimes

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

The land under TMobile park ebbed and flowed with the tides for thousands of years, until the developing city filled these mudflats and marshes with dredge spoils, sawdust, and who knows what else as the Duwamish River became a channelized superfund site no longer providing the bounties it once did to mariners of past.

As the season flows on, and the team seems hiccupy and unnatural (or maybe this is natural for the Ms?), is their trajectory linked to the land beneath them, the Elliott Bay tides and the Duwamish River delta? The Bois and Rubenstein graphic looks eerily like a tide chart over the past 4 decades, with that up/down oscillation and periods of king tide-like highs (2000-2003) - neap-like lows (2010-2013) - and while not pictured, the 2021-2025 seasons would be another king tide winning season. These ~18.5year cycles (from high to low back to high) also match the 18.5yesr lunar nodal cycle with tidal ranges.

If I’m looking at this correctly this could signal another not-high/not-low period until ~2031-2035, when we’d have another low tide series of losing seasons, and then the boats get floated out of the muck when we have another big streak in ~2042-2046. Let’s wait and see. Mariners know patience; crushing waves and sunny skies dance into the future.

HoWeVeR… does a 2027 lockout break the cycle? Is this the analogous Big One, M9 Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake that is rough but also shakes us into a new trajectory with a widened Overton Window? Does the Mariner’s responses from previous lockouts or strikes (or other seismic shifts e.g. stadium demo/construction) provide any glimpse of what’s ahead?

Map credit to The Waterlines Project at UW; photo of US Army Corps dredging (the relatively unaltered) Palix River in Willapa Bay, got me thinking of the ground beneath the Mariners. History graphic has credit on it

EDIT: what does that little tidal creek under/around T Mobile’s footprint have to do with it? Should it be restored?! Connect back to the water, boys!

Cal is currently on the hottest hot streak of his entire career. Simultaneously, Julio is currently on the coldest cold streak of his entire career.

Cal was playing through injuries early and Julio likely has post-concussion issues now, so there is a reason and the reason is injuries. But the stars have not aligned for the Mariners this year.

Donovan details concussion recovery, aims to return before season's end

“This update was initiated by Donovan, who approached MLB.com before Sunday’s 2-0 win over the A’s to provide an account to his recovery.

Per the club’s baseball operations policy, players on the concussion injured list are not made available to media. But Donovan wanted to provide clarity on his situation, and he did so through approval from a club official.”

who do we want as manager?

Upvotes

With it becoming increasingly likely that we drop Dan Wilson, who would you guys want to see become our new manager, and why? This could be from a history of good decisions, vibes, player connections, ect.

What are y'all thinking/hoping for?

Andrés Muñoz gets the save as he and Bryan Woo combine to shut out the Athletics and only allow a single hit! And Muñoz moves to third all-time saves in Mariners history with 102!

How late does the Mariners garage stay open until?

Upvotes

I have a parking pass for 9/9’s game but afterwards will be staying in the area for the Seahawks game. Does the Mariners garage stay open after the M’s game is over? Or would I need to exit before a certain time?

Trying to plan parking for the day if I can’t park in the garage for a few hours after the M’s game is over. TIA

Most unwatchable team in Mariners history?

Upvotes

I had more fun watching the 2010 team, or when we thought that Jesus Montero, Justin Smoak and Dustin Ackley were the future of the organization, but curious to hear your thoughts

Most Memorable Games of 2026?

Upvotes

We're beyond cooked so let's get the nostalgia started early. There's been a lot of forgettable, borderline unwatchable baseball played this season, but also some standout games. There have also been a lot of moments where thought "man these guys are finally figuring it out." What are your most memorable moments from 2026, good or bad?

The Good: I was at T-Mobile Park for the July 4 game, and that was probably one of the best I've seen in person. Watching the Mariners beat the brakes off the Jays on Independence Day with a stadium full of Canadians was cathartic, and it included a much-needed homer from Cal that landed about thirty feet from me. Very much a reminder that we have a good team and guys that can hit the ball hard.

The Bad: Emerson Hancock's 14K loss on Randy Johnson retirement night. This game has been stuck in my head all season. We have our pitcher giving us everything he's got during a game honoring one of the team's all-timers, only to get hung out to dry by the offense. It was a comically on-the-nose distillation of this season and really the history of the team, and it was like you could feel a ghost in the room. I am not a doom-and-gloomer but that loss was ominous and like I said, it's still on my mind today.
