Edit- why is everyone so emotional about this?

Things have changed a lot since I first installed LOS probably a decade or so ago(back then I think it was Cynogen mod).

And even before Google took over Android, android still worked pretty well.

After that a lot of changes has happened in LOS and I am not that technical but I see a google folder in META-INF/com inside the LOS package for sweet/RN10Pro which might not have anything to do with google, not my point.

What I am trying to determine is with google's insistance on making Android just like iOS, what happens to project like LOS?

Yesterday I was watching some videos about custom ROMs and LineageOS caught my attention.

I have some experience formatting computers and have been using Linux daily for over a year, and I'm curious to try an open-source ROM on my phone, but I believe that installing a custom ROM on a phone isn't the same as installing a Linux system on a PC.

Most importantly, I think it's worth noting that I currently only have access to one phone, which means that permanently damaging it would be a big problem.

Do you think it's worth trying to see if the custom ROM works for me?

I've had a Motorola moto one 5G ace, codename "kiev" for four years now.
It's been running Lineage OS for MicroG 19.1, and it was time for an update.
Well this phone will not boot any current Lineage 23.2 (Android 16) builds. Boot loops.
I've flashed recovery, run copy-partitions, factory reset, installed from microSD. Nope x3.

I loved how easily the OEM unlocked the bootloader before, so months ago I ordered my phone's sidegrade, a moto g 5G 2024, codename "fogo", with the intention of installing the latest Lineage OS version. But today Motorola says, "sorry, this new phone model, is not supported by our unlock process". Well I just threw away about $160 on a "unlocked" phone that the OEM won't unlock. I'm sure I could have had Lineage running on it today, with that bootloader unlock. Motorola won't even tell me, which models are eligible, for their bootloader unlocks.

What's a $200 range phone, with an unlocked bootloader, or bulletproof unlock process?
Searching for exactly matching model numbers online, usually results, in sparse 'in stock' results.
Has someone bought a budget phone recently, and had a smooth Lineage OS install process?
I'd prefer a Nothing Phone 2, but cannot justify or afford to spend $700 on a phone.

Recently got a new phone (Sony Xperia 5 IV) and due to the upcoming Google sideloading block, I hope to switch it to Lineage. However, I see a lot of people recommending against doing it on your primary phone. What exactly are the possible risks?

I'm tech-savvy enough to follow instructions and troubleshoot. I don't use Google Pay, I don't need my banking app, and my old phone has been on Android 9 for years so I don't care if stuff like face unlock or any of the other doohickeys work. Is there anything I'm not thinking of that could pose an issue?

(P.S. I read an article suggesting that Google might be able to enforce the sideload block via third-party gapps packages. I haven't fully committed to degoogling because of youtube and gmail. Is it worth the trouble of finding alternatives to avoid gapps entirely for this reason, or is this unlikely enough that risking it should be fine? I'd like to totally degoogle one day for privacy reasons, but for now I'm too busy to dedicate myself to it.)

Is the development of Android ROMs kinda dead, or did I not look well enough?

I got to this sub trying to find CyanogenMod. I used CyanogenMod in a lot of my previous devices, and was trying to get back on it for fun. However, besides this sub and LineageOS website, I didn't find anything on current developments. I remember when CyanogenMod was around, the XDA forum was booming with mods and people developing for current phones, and I couldn't find that.

I own a poco f3 and really love it, but today I want to replace it with something new, what phone do you recommend which it's bootloader unlocks with ease to use lineage os? My budget is limited so please consider I can't buy high end phones. Used or scond handed phones are welcome either.

I'm planing to migrate to LineageOS because One UI is upsetting me lately, one thing holding me back is because I see a lot of people saying there can be problems with Banks.

Can I migrate and still use my bank apps normally? (I'm from Brazil, if this information is relevant)

So I really want to switch to lineage OS but also I have small hands so the modern phone landscape is hell for me.

I am really just asking to see if any one else has already looked through all the supported phones and found the smallest, don't bother doing it all for me because I will do it myself if no one has (then post here I guess)

why do i have to reinstall the bootloader driver every time i update?

EDIT: using the built-in updater to update my phone. This started happening 3-4 weeks ago.

EDIT #2: Sideload the magisk apk in recovery. You don't have to root after updating anymore.

I will be getting a new phone soon, and I’m trying to decide which brand to buy. Which brands have a good community support and custom ROMs? 

Additionally, I’m considering getting a budget phone that I can modify to resemble a Pixel 1 in order to gain more storage. Which brand would be best for this purpose?

I use FOSS apps on my phone all the time, and I'm really hoping that LineageOS will give me a way to bypass these restrictions when Google starts implementing them, because I have a feeling they are NOT going to back down.

EDIT: I'm aware LineageOS doesn't ship with Gapps by default. I'd like to have the option of using it as well as my FOSS apps, instead of having to pick and choose between one or the other.

I have been using GrapheneOS for last 2 years and I am pretty satisfied the OS, but now my phone is having hardware issues thus it needs to be replaced and honestly, I don't want another Google Phone from the perspective of Hardware Specs vs Price and the reliability that is deserving of such price.

Now, I am looking to move towards LineageOS but my current research is limiting my understanding of Privacy provided by the default installation. I mean I know I wont get the sandbox experience here but I read that LineageOS can be made more secure based on the method of Installation like using MicroG instead of G-Apps.

Can someone explain to me what privacy risk is there with LineageOS (without being a biased fanboy) and what methods are there to mitigate said issues (if any). And what precautions should I take when installing the OS?

Currently running stock Android 10 on my Galaxy S9+ (SM-965F), looking to put on a custom ROM as some apps I need no longer support Android 10, & came across LineageOS.

Seems the S9+ has been discontinued, was wondering what the latest Official LineageOS was & what Android OS version it was based on?

Are there any issues that you guys know of that may limit functionality?

My phone is only 4g, it seems to connect via VoLTE, which I think is needed here in Australia, do you know if the latest Official LineageOS supports VoLTE?

Does the latest LineageOS support call-recording? Android blocked it since Android 10

I notice on the LineageOS wiki it says "

• LineageOS builds for this device require an Android 10 version of the stock OS to be installed prior to following the installation guide"

Does this mean LineageOS just builds ontop of stock OS, or is it a fully separate custom ROM? I remember doing other ROMs in the past, the installation wiped everything, so Im not sure here.

Is there a version of Samsung SmartSwitch for Linux Mint to make a backup, or will I need to do the backup on a Windows PC first?

Does anyone have a link to the LineageOS image + Odin installers & how-tos'? I see on the LineageOS website, I'm reading through the "Install LineageOS on Samsung Galaxy S9+", but it's only mentioned some sort of installation via command-line, which is all new to me. just installed lineageOS on my new phone, and im wondering if its worth it to switch/change the default apps (camera app, sms app etc) to something like fossify's stuff? thanks

idk why they remove fonts or custom icons (on the status bar) like lineageos i think has less stuff then old cyanogenmod roms. any reason?? and no i dont want to use crdroid.

I get that LineageOS does not support Play Integrity but what does that mean for actual use of the smartphone?

I read that some people say that the camera will not work on LineageOS on this Sony smartphone but others say only the official Sony camera app will not work and replacement camera apps will be able to take photos but without all the features.

It is hard to understand what I can expect to not work.

Is there a list or resources anywhere for what will not work?

Hi, I did read about Android becoming some sort of Apple fenced ground, plus bootloaders being locked in ever more annoying ways, not liking even just the idea of it.

While I don't necessarily need the latest Android version, I have been using LineageOS and many FOSS apps to let them go.

LineageOS is so reliable that in my experience it is just the hardware I install it on the single point of failure (battery and/or screen).

How are you making sure you will be able to use LineageOS in the years to come on devices that will keep working, with silly banking and similar apps being the only reason to force using Gapps?

Are you hoarding secondhand phones that still have SD card support and other vanishing desiderable features?

Are you hoarding the newest supported model so that it has more lifespan ahead?

Are you flashing older Gapps and preventing updates so that you can keep that software ecosystem stuck in say year 2024?

Do the BBBank and VR Banking Apps work on Lineage OS? I am thinking of getting a new phone and and installing Lineage OS on it.

If I get a Sony phone and install Lineage OS on it, can I get the original Sony OS back from somewhere, in the case my banking app doesn't work?

I came across this article a couple of days ago about google forcing users of android to have google play services in order to pass their new recaptcha. What do people like me who have google-less phones do about this? Is there a way around this?

It looks like an interesting device.

I'm going the degoogle route, so I plan to use it without Google services, just with Microg. I don't plan to play games on it, just use things like WhatsApp, opensource apps, and do a lot of web browsing.

What has your experience been like? How are the updates? Are they stable?
