I’ve been struggling in a relationship with an incredibly inconsiderate man for almost three years now. At this point, I feel stupid, unheard, unseen, and honestly embarrassed by how much of myself I’ve invested in this relationship.
He’s currently unemployed, so he doesn’t contribute financially. I was genuinely okay with that because I understood that people go through difficult phases. What I haven’t been okay with is realizing that he doesn’t seem to contribute emotionally either.
I constantly feel like I’m asking for the bare minimum—affection, attention, concern for how I’m feeling, some sense that my emotional well-being actually matters to him.
Recently, he crashed at my place for several days. I repeatedly asked him to leave because being around him had become unbearable for me, but he simply wouldn’t go. It reached a point where I was crying, begging him to leave and having what felt like an anxiety attack right in front of him. I was completely breaking down, and somehow even that didn’t seem to make him understand the seriousness of what I was feeling. There were moments when he would even laugh or make light of me being upset, which made me feel even more insane and humiliated.
After days of this, he finally left.
The last night was particularly ugly. I had been drinking with my flatmate and came back tipsy. I initiated an argument and said some genuinely horrible things to him, including things about him and his family that I regret. I’m not trying to excuse my own behavior or pretend I handled everything perfectly. I feel guilty about it.
And now that he’s actually gone, instead of feeling peaceful, my head is a complete mess.
This has been our pattern for years. We have horrible fights, I decide I’m done, and then eventually I answer one of his calls or let him back into my life. Somewhere along the way I think both of us started assuming that no matter how bad things got, I would eventually come back.
This time I desperately do not want to.
But I feel weak. I feel lonely. Part of me is still wondering whether he misses me, whether those three years meant anything to him, whether he was ever actually attached to me. And I hate that I’m even thinking about those things after everything that has happened.
There’s also another part of the relationship that has destroyed my self-esteem. I would feel sexually rejected by him constantly. There were times when he would rather watch porn alone in the bathroom than have sex with me, and I would be left feeling sexually frustrated, undesirable and confused. It wasn’t just about sex—it became another way in which I felt unwanted while simultaneously having this person constantly occupying my space and my life.
I don’t even know what I’m supposed to feel anymore. Angry? Guilty? Heartbroken? Relieved? I somehow feel all of them at once.
And please, I’m not really looking for “find a hobby,” “go to the gym,” “focus on yourself,” or a generic “just move on.” I know intellectually that I need to move on. That isn’t the part I’m struggling to understand.
I need something more real from people who have actually been through this kind of attachment.
How do you get through the first few days or weeks? And how do you deal with the horrible question of whether you ever actually mattered to them?
I think more than anything right now, I just need somewhere to talk and get all of this out.
