PSA Calgary Fire crews are battling a massive private landfill fire in southeast Calgary

I want to update you on the large fire burning at the ECCO Recycling private landfill in southeast Calgary.

Calgary Fire started receiving calls around 6 p.m. yesterday reporting smoke and flames near Barlow Trail and Shepard Road SE.

When firefighters arrived, they found a large fire burning on the east side of the landfill.

Getting to the fire has been difficult. Crews are dealing with poor roads, wet conditions and extremely limited access inside the landfill.

Because they could not safely get equipment directly to parts of the fire, crews moved to a neighbouring business east of the landfill and set up defensive operations. Their immediate priority has been containing the fire to the area where it started and preventing it from spreading.

That work continued through the night and into today.

Landfill staff are supporting the response. City Waste and Recycling Services has also brought equipment and expertise to the site to help get this fire under control and eventually extinguish it.

There is also an air-quality issue we are watching closely. A large plume of smoke is rising from the site and drifting southeast.

Calgary Fire’s Hazardous Materials team is sampling the air and modelling where that smoke is travelling. We are also working with Alberta Environment to continuously monitor conditions.

If you live or work in Douglasdale, Quarry Park, East Shepard, McKenzie Towne, New Brighton or Copperfield, the smoke could cause irritation. If you smell smoke, close your windows and stay indoors where possible.

This is expected to be a long-duration incident. Firefighters will remain on scene working to contain and extinguish it.

Thank you to our Calgary firefighters who have been working around the clock, our Waste and Recycling crews, landfill staff and everyone supporting this response.

We will keep you updated as conditions change.

Meta Refreshing as an American to visit Calgary part 4

Upvotes

Sorry about the current trade war.

I have friends and relatives in Calgary so I visit often and have posted a few times prior. I’m from California.

Highlights

-This time I really got to experience the charm of Canmore. I find Canmore very nice because it has the same walkable core as Banff. Nice simple hikes and intermediate hikes around.

-Eclipse coffee roasters is delicious.

-Iron goat is a bit pricey but really enjoyed the burger there. Shared both the beef burger and the elk-bison-beef mix burger. Correct me if the mix is a bit different. This is all on memory.

-When family went to Banff, we went on a nice 90 minute Canoe ride and it was really beautiful to see Banff and the Bow River on a day with a lot of sun and 30C weather. Around 80 CAD. Hosted by a nice British lad.

-A&W teen burger (24 hour location in Canmore!) is still the best.

-Beavertails still hits the spot

-family went to silver dragon on a sunday; very busy day and very long service but good food.

-a family friend shared some free concert events around the city and it was really fun. I went to a raggaeton dj set with some Cold Garden beers and enjoyed it a lot. I couldn’t believe it was a free event.

-Cold Garden, Establishment, and Last Best are my 3 favorite breweries and have some of my favorite beers in the city.

-a nice little stroll around Prince’s Island park

-Elbow River Casino was fun, good music, and won about $100 CAD. So cool that winnings aren’t taxed.

-I like Hy’s steakhouse for a special occasion with family. They did say other steakhouses are what I need to try next time.

Thanks as always Calgary!

* the flight back was half full still and totally understandable.

Question New parents in need of milk?

Upvotes

I am wondering if there are any new parents in need of breast milk for their baby? I am an oversupplier and my now 1yo never used a bottle. I have quite a few bags of pumped milk in my deep freeze from <12 mo and I'm moving at the end of the week and I'm loathe to throw it all out. I'm not on FB or I'd post on the Human Milk For Human Babies page.

(No idea if I'm allowed to post this here.)

Would love to help out any new families, anyone with a baby in the NICU in need of milk.

Cheers.

Seeking Advice Advice needed on job search

Upvotes

Hello all,

I’m getting really desperate in trying to get a job in my field. I am looking for anything to do with environmental side of mining or oil and gas.

I am a (relatively recent) graduate after switching my careers. I have volunteer experience in my new field of choice, but I am unable to land a job. I have applied for so many positions to never hear back from or get the “thanks for applying but we’re going with another candidate” message. I want to stay in Calgary due to my support network and love for the city, but I am more than willing to do the fly-in fly-out for the right opportunity. I’ve gone to so many networking events and met amazing people who all say “we need passionate people and specialists like you” but they are never hiring. What else can I do? Do you have any more advice? Maybe you’re hiring yourself?

Thank you for reading my post, I’m just someone who’s getting desperate. I want to work and contribute to the Canadian economy and workforce, and make the world slightly better by trying to make the industry better.

Rant Wedding violinists no showed on wedding day

Upvotes

I debated posting this, but after seeing my review disappear from WeddingWire, I felt it was important to share my experience elsewhere so other couples can make an informed decision.

I booked Megan Ann Konschuh (megannstrings on insta, megan ann on wedding wire) as the violinist for our wedding, along with her husband, who performs with her as The Charms / Official Duo Grande (officialduogrande and wearethecharms on insta)

Unfortunately, the planning process was very disorganized. I had to repeatedly follow up about the contract, song selections, and other details. I even had to ask for a contract, make corrections to it myself, and one week before the wedding I realized she didn’t even have my song list, so I had to text it to her again.

I was also asked to pay the full amount immediately rather than a deposit with the balance closer to the wedding, which was different from most of our other vendors.

The week before the wedding, Megan told me her husband could no longer perform but that she had found a replacement. She also mentioned she had another performance in Cranbrook the day before our wedding, which made me nervous, but I trusted she would still be there.

On our wedding day, Megan did not show up.

She did not contact me directly. My wedding coordinator was informed, and that is how I found out. Megan did not mention why she couldn’t make it when she contacted my coordinator. I assume it’s because she had her show in cranbrook the day before and did not want to make the 5-6 hr drive to our venue the next day (venue is only 1hr north of Calgary). Our venue thankfully stepped in and played our ceremony music through the speakers, but we had specifically booked and paid for live violin music, and that experience was lost.

Megan did ultimately refund me, and I want to be clear about that. However, I had to reach out to her myself afterward to get the refund started. There was then back-and-forth about why the money could not be returned right away, which was frustrating considering I had been expected to send the full payment immediately when I booked. I eventually received my money back, but I do not feel I should have had to chase a refund for a service that was never provided.

What also concerns me is that there does not appear to be another easily accessible public review platform, such as Google, where clients can share their experiences. My WeddingWire review is now gone, and another negative review I had previously seen is also no longer visible. I can’t speak to why they disappeared, but that is why I felt it was important to post this elsewhere.

I’m posting this so other couples planning their wedding do not need to go through the unnecessary stress we had to go through. There are many other talented violinists who would not do this to their wedding couples.

Update: I reposted my wedding wire review hoping she doesn’t take it down again 🙏🏼

Local Shopping/Services Help Finding an Out-Of-Print Book

Upvotes

I’m currently searching for a copy of “Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me” by Richard Fariña. It isn’t a rare book at all, but it’s out of print in its original English and not exactly popular. Online, prices are all stupid either because 1) older editions of the book have become collector’s items due to an included preamble by Tom Pynchon, and 2) Shipping from the United States right now is crazy overpriced because of president Donald J. EpsteinFiles’ never-ending crusade to raise the cost of gasoline.

I’m trying to find a copy locally. I checked with a couple stores already (Fair’s Fair, the Next Page, and Pages) but none of them currently have it although apparently Fair’s Fair had a copy recently. Hoping someone could point me in the right direction of other places to check. Thanks!

Recommendations Good affordable counsellors or therapists

Upvotes

Just like the title said I’m looking for good therapists that are affordable that I can go to. I’m under a parent’s insurance but I’d also like them to not know if that’s possible, it’s a whole thing. Plus I’m not sure if their insurance is applicable here so yeah I’d love it if they didn’t break the bank. I’d also prefer if they were: black, female, queer and neurodivergent in some way. I know this seems like a lot but I’m all those things so I just like it if I could relate to my therapist in that way. I’m 18 and I start uni on Wednesday so I won’t really be able to do in person meetings, so online would be better, they don’t have to be based in Calgary. In that same vein, I’d also like to know the best way to get tested/ a diagnosis for ADHD. Thank you in advance for your help :)
