General New User Guide for r/Edmonton - Please read first

Upvotes

NEW USERS of r/Edmonton - kindly read this first

To post or comment in r/Edmonton, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Accounts need to be a week old.

  • You need to have a verified email address.

  • You need to have a minimum amount of TEN (10) COMMENT karma from participating in OTHER SUBREDDITS than r/Edmonton.

Why? This helps keep bad actors away, like trolls and banned users. It also helps users new to reddit to have a chance to learn how to use reddit outside of r/Edmonton.

#IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

#How to verify your email for new users :

To verify your email on Reddit, either click the verification link in the email you received when creating your account or go to Settings > Account Settings and choose Update email address to resend the verification email.     _Once you request it, open your email's inbox, find the verification email, and click the link inside to complete the process._

  - On the web -

• Go to your account settings by clicking your profile icon and then selecting Settings.

  • Click on Account Settings.

  • Find the email address section. If you see an option to "resend verification email" or similar, click it.

• Alternatively, you can navigate directly to reddit.com/prefs/update/ to find the email settings.

  -- On the app --

• Tap your profile icon.

• Go to Settings.

• Select Account Settings.

• Tap Update email address.

• Tap the button to Resend verification email.

#What is the difference between POST karma and COMMENT karma?

Post karma is earned when users upvote the original submissions (links, images, text posts) you create, reflecting your ability to share engaging content.

_Comment karma is earned when your replies to others' posts are upvoted, showing your active participation and contribution to discussions. Both are totaled for your profile but often used separately to satisfy subreddit restrictions._

POST KARMA:

Gained from creating threads or posting links. It indicates a good ability to initiate conversations.

COMMENT KARMA:

Gained from replying to posts or other comments. It indicates active participation in community dialogue.

Key Differences: Post karma rewards content creation, while comment karma rewards interaction.

#Some subreddits (like r/edmonton) require specific thresholds of either type (or both) to prevent spam, often looking at post, comment, or combined totals for restrictions.

Both types of karma are not a 1:1 ratio with upvotes; instead, they represent a weighted score from community upvotes, reduced by downvotes.

(In order to post in r/Edmonton - you need to do THREE things:)

  • your account must be a WEEK old (7 days)

    • you need to have TEN (10) COMMENT karma
    • you need to have a verified email address

ONCE AGAIN, IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED THESE THREE (3) REQUIREMENTS YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

Discussion Exploring Edmonton at night alone

Upvotes

I’m pretty new to Edmonton and idk if this is weird but one of my favourite things to do is just walk/run or rent an escooter and go down 107 Ave through Rogers Place, towards Hope Mission, Chinatown and then over to 118 Ave. I usually do it alone and pretty late at night, around midnight. I just find it really interesting seeing what downtown and the surrounding areas are actually like when most people are asleep. Like I’ve gone down 107 Ave and on the way back there’s a bunch of cops and then I hear someone got stabbed, I’ve seen people who look like they’re dealing outside convenience stores around Chinatown, and then on 118 Ave I’ll have random people whistling at me trying to get my attention. I’m a 5’10 150 lb dude so I’m not exactly intimidating lol, but honestly out of all the times I’ve done this nobody has really bothered me. I do have a car but it’s just not the same experience. You can’t really hear everything when you’re sitting in a car. I actually like hearing the sirens, people yelling/screaming, random noises and just seeing what’s going on around me. I guess it’s kinda eye opening seeing the city like this instead of just driving through it. Is this weird or does anyone else actually like doing stuff like this? currently posting as i’m getting ready to go out for my nightly routine loll.

Question What is your career with no degree?

Upvotes

For those of you who never got a university degree/college education, what do you do?
Im 25, went to esthetician school right out of high school. Worked in that field for awhile but it has gotten super saturated and hard to make decent amount. Ive still been doing it a bit on the side and now work full time as an admin/coordinator. Just trying to figure out my next steps! I would rather not go back to school as it is a huge expense that I cannot afford right now. Just wanting inspiration of what others have done!

That 3rd image really brings back the memories. That's the location at 99 St. and 70 Ave, where I used to get my King mushroom cheeseburger fix back in the day, when it was a Burger King.

Commuting/Transit Metro Line Southwest Concept

Post image
Upvotes

So, my idea is to extend the metro line through the southwest area via Terwillegar Drive since the southwest area is growing, plus 2 subway tunnels is a good idea for the stations Fort Edmonton Park, Brookside/53 Avenue, and Windermere/Ambleside, and also, the stations Bulyea, Riverbend/Rabbit Hill, and Terwillegar are trenched and include long pedways to connect neighborhoods, and there should also be 2 new transit centres for Fort Edmonton Park and Windermere/Ambleside.

Local history What kept the US Burger King out of Edmonton.

Picture 1: the old Burger King KFC sign, after they acquired the rights to sell the then little-known Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1959.

Picture 2: the traditional Burger King style building, which became Burger Baron after 1995.

I remember this very well;

Getting a bucket of KFC for a Saturday dinner was a big event when I was a kid. When I got older, in my late teens, and went to work, what became my favorite burger was a double king mushroom cheeseburger back in the mid-70s, and it was good eating!

Discussion For indoor playground owners

Upvotes

Not that I am entitled to it, but it would be great to hear about the margins to run these indoor playgrounds.

For the cost of admission (16-20/child), it adds up really quick for more than one kiddo...

We're not allowed outside for or drink - and some places don't even let me go to the car to eat and come back. My kids have special diets and can't eat from concession/restaurants -- even explaining this doesn't help and I've been told to take my bag to the car or leave.

So my plea is for some context and insight so I understand better, grow empathetic and want to return without feeling ripped off.

and I also beg -- why can't any of you at least have decent coffee?!?

Local Businesses Good affordable accountant for a self employed individual

Upvotes

I've been freelancing for a few local production companies for the last year or so. I'm looking for a good accountant familiar with how to file as self employed and knows what things I might be able to claim as an expense that I might not know about.

I don't want someone who just collects receipts and checks all my boxes for me, I want someone who will go through how best to handle my finances and help me file effectively.

If you know anyone who might fit please send me their info and about how much they would charge! Thanks in advance!

Question Looking for suggestion on affordable vet for a cat!

Upvotes

Hello,
We recently rescued a cat this past friday.
We estimate him to be 8 weeks and 4.2lbs. We are trying to look for an affordable highly rated vet.
These are the things we would need done!

- Deworming
- Initial Health check ( he was found outside)
- microchip
- Vaccines

I’d love some suggestions, anywhere in the city or sherwood park would be ideal!

Question Big bin event vs free eco station weekend

Upvotes

Whenever I've been to a free eco station weekend it's always been a crazy line... So long that half the time I end up coming back after the weekend and paying.

But I'm wondering if the big bin events are any better in terms of time? I have to get rid of a broken couch and a broken fridge so I'm hoping not to waste a trip.

Thanks!

Question Looking for car mechanic

Upvotes

Hey Edmonton,

As it says in the title, I'm looking for a car mechanic. Someone who knows what they're doing and is looking for some extra work or work on the side, who charges a reasonable fee and is willing to let me source my own parts. Please don't recommend an overpriced shop. I'm disabled, and very very limited in what I can spend. I'm aiming to drive less and start taking transit more but I still need a reliable vehicle and am hoping to find a decent human here who is able to help me out. Thanks in advance!

Question 3D Scan and Print

Upvotes

Does anyone know of a place that will scan and 3D print a plastic part?

The handle for my bottom freezer is breaking again. I've glued it 3 times. I don't think it will work again. The OEM part is $140 plus shipping.

Somehow I think 3D printing will be cheaper.

Events Tinariwen Cancelled Sept 8

Upvotes

"IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING THE TINARIWEN CANADIAN TOUR Unfortunately, due to a fire at the home of one of their team members, the travel documents of several members of Tinariwen’s crew and touring party were destroyed.

The team has been doing everything possible to maintain the tour, but despite their best efforts, they are unfortunately now obliged to postpone the current Canadian tour.

We are working quickly with the band and their team to reschedule the shows in the short term, and we will announce the new dates as soon as they are confirmed.

All ticket holders will have the option to hold on to their tickets for the rescheduled date or request a refund.

Tinariwen sincerely apologizes to all of their friends and fans across Canada for this unexpected change. They are doing everything they can to return and perform for you as soon as possible."

This sucks and I hope they are able to come another time.

General PLEASE HELP! I need help finding this lady that sells taxidermy moths/butterflies, please i'm so desperate.

Upvotes

My friends birthday is coming up and she loves moths and butterflies, I think she'd really like a taxidermied one. I know of this lady who collaborated with a sanctuary, and whenever a butterfly/moth naturally passed away she would take them and pin them into a picture frame box (at least I think that's how she did it).

How I know of her is because I worked at Remedy Cafe around 2 years ago at the 124th location, she came in with some of her works and asked if she could sell them there and we said yes. Nearly all of her taxidermy pieces were sold. I just recently remembered her, but I can't remember her business name and I don't think the cafe is selling her works anymore. Google has been no help. Please, if anyone knows who I am talking about, please let me know what her business name is I would be eternally grateful. If you know anyone else that does ethical taxidermy moths/butterflies that would be great also! Thank you!!

Question Tinariwen concert

Upvotes

Did anyone buy tickets for the Tinariwen concert that’s supposed to happen Sept 8 but got rescheduled? I’m just wondering if there’s any news on the new date. Also would love to know anyone who’s going as I’m going by myself!
