Honestly that was one of the most baffling defensive game plans I've ever seen with Stanford. Pre-season hype was that Miami was going to have one of the best passing offenses in the country, but was going to struggle early with the run game with a new offensive line, and Stanford completely sold out on stopping the run all night long and did jack shit for the pass.

I think it depends on the team, someone like the Cardinals would definitely take Mensah as the first QB off the board. I think a lot of franchises will be able to see through the insane talent on this Miami offense and see his serious problems(unless he fixed them this offseason). I don’t think we can know yet if he has with how much his options torched Stanford’s secondary and his OLine protected him.

I have to speak my truth. College sports in 2026 are silly and it's hard to get emotionally invested in this stuff. If that sounds like sour grapes because my favorite team just got smacked, know that I watched them lose at home to Division 1AA UC Davis once upon a time. Getting smoked 45-6 by a top 10 team doesn't register on the pain scale.

College sports always had a slimy underbelly, but the NIL money and transfer carousel has made it dumber than ever. The super conferences feel completely wrong. It feels wrong not have UW, Oregon, USC, and UCLA on the schedule. Playing a league game at home against Miami is beyond dumb. I'm emotionally checked out and generally disinterested.

I know this is a CFB sub, but as a neutral, I’m honestly surprised Stanford went the ACC route.

If there’s any institution with enough gravitas to say, we are not going to participate fully in the idiocracy of modern CFB and are willing to accept being less serious about football because of it, I would have thought it was Stanford. Do most Stanford students and alumni really care that much about having a nationally competitive football program?

Instead, Stanford doubled down. It joined the ACC on financially unfavorable terms, is pouring substantially more resources into football, and now makes athletes in dozens of other sports (many of which have been far more nationally successful than Stanford football recently) do cross-country travel constantly for “conference” play.

I’m not suggesting they pull a UChicago and raze Stanford Stadium to build a library on top of it. But why not accept a less ambitious football model and organize the rest of Stanford athletics around what actually makes sense for the students and the sports involved? Apart from Cal, Stanford has essentially no geographic or historical connection the ACC. And the football program hasn’t been nationally relevant for years. Tbh, I think it’ll hard, if not impossible, to see it regaining relevancy in the present CFB environment—the Miami game being a case in point.

Stanford is one of the few universities whose reputation, alumni engagement, applicant pool, and institutional identity obviously do not depend AT ALL on being successful in football. So why make so many other parts of the athletic department accommodate the ridiculous and perverse economics of football?

Am I underestimating how much Stanford students and alumni actually care about remaining a nationally competitive football program?

Oh I actually do, went to the pro before the game, one of the moms of a band member said their flight got delayed due to a plane issue, then because of that got stranded in a layover. So they almost didnt make the game at all. Changed at SFO and came straight to the game

You wouldnt notice by the score but Stanfords QB had quite a good game. He was rushed all night but never unsettled. Made very fast correct reads all night and was tearing us apart in between the 20’s. I see many shootouts for stanford this year

Mensah was brilliant. So many dot throws. Toney is bloody insane. 200 receiving yards at half-time is a Madden statline.

Worried about our O-line and oh how we'll miss Bain/Mesidor but man at the very least I think this is gonna be 2024 Cam Ward esque with ridiculous scorelines which is always a fun watch.
