My wife and I recently stopped our subscription for the NYT to cut down on our subscription spending. That said, we've really wanted to keep using newspapers as opposed to phones/internet news. Does anyone know where I could reliably pick up a national newspaper (NYT, USA Today, etc) every now and then to make my wife smile? I get the Bham Times a lot from coffee shops, but looking for a national paper as well. We are residents of Eastwood, so no luck in getting the copies at Homewood library.

I did a bit of research and found the Alabama Forestry Commission's "Champion Trees" list, which is interesting for sure! But imo the more big good trees I can visit, the better!

So I’m flying in to Birmingham September 16th from Wisconsin and staying until the 20th for an event on the 17th. Because I’ll have the start of the day and both 18th and 19th to do whatever I want, is there anything I should check out? I’ll only have $700 on me, apparently here cabs are paid by the mile unlike my smaller town, so I’m not entirely sure how much I’ll be spending on cab transportation. (If you know anything cheaper do lmk)
I’d like to find some places that don’t require too much walking due to my disability. I heard downtown is pretty, is it worth checking out? What’s some good restaurants you prefer? What about things that are fun to do alone, anything good?

Major shout-out to Andrew Harris for drainage around the house to take water away from your foundation and crawl space.
I found Andrew’s name on here in a couple of posts from like over 200 days ago to 6 years ago when I was desperately searching this week for someone to help with a pretty major drainage problem at my house.
Water had gotten bad enough that the hardwood floors inside were warping, so I was freaking out a little and getting bids. One company loosely quoted me $5–6k, another company was around $3,500, a low bid, but they didn’t make me feel too confident, and then Andrew came out.
Y’all. This man is some kind of angel. 😂
He is very soft-spoken and just immediately comes across as a genuinely good person. But what really impressed me was how he looked at the job. We walked the property and you could literally see him thinking and dissecting what was happening — where the water was coming from, where it was going, why the existing drainage wasn’t working, and what would actually make sense long term.
He came up with better ideas than anyone else had suggested, and I could tell he actually gave a shit about fixing the problem instead of just selling me some drains.
I felt like he had my back almost immediately. Honestly, even if his bid had come in higher, I had already decided I was going to work with him because I trusted him and the way he approached the job.
Our property has some legitimate drainage problems and he still gave me a break on the price.
So I wanted to pay it forward because those random old Reddit posts are literally how I found him.
If you’re crazy and are going to call him 19 times a day and make his life miserable, please don’t call him. 😂
But if you’re normal and you have drainage or landscaping issues, get a couple bids and then have Andrew come out and look at it. Let him walk the property and think through it. I think you’ll see what I mean.
He knows what he’s doing, he cares about doing it right, and he is just a darn good human.

I travel for work about 1-2 weeks out of the month and thus have been a frequent flyer at BHM for years. I like our airport. Hear me. I like our airport. It’s small but has what you need. Quick to get in. BUT FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD HIRE MORE PEOPLE TO GET THE CHECKED BAGS.

I haven’t seen anyone else complaining about this but I’ve been to much smaller and much larger airports that both take a fraction of the time to unload the bags from the plane.

It doesn’t matter what time I land whether it’s 11am, 4pm or 10pm those bags take thirty minutes to an hour to travel an eighth of a mile. This has been a 5 year complaint.

As an example. I’m sitting down there right now. I was OFF the plane at 4:45pm. It is 5:24pm and they just unloaded the luggage from the plane. Not delivered. Unloaded.

Has anyone else gotten frustrated at this or am I just crazy?

As the title says, i’m (25m) looking for folks to skate with. If you frequent City Walk, there’s a good chance you’ve seen me there. It’s a great park, but I much prefer street skating and getting to ride around the city looking for spots. If anyone out there would like to join me, i’d love the company.
