2026 Animal Resource Guide for Mobile, AL

Post image
Upvotes

Please spay and neuter your pets, strays, and community cats whenever possible! Mobile has an animal overpopulation problem, making it difficult to rehome animals. The shelters are already full of loving animals that need homes, so please do your part to help prevent more unwanted litters.

Times are tough, and cost can make it harder to get animals the care they need. This resource list includes organizations that may help with spay/neuter services, rehoming, and pet food assistance. Please check each page for current information, requirements, and availability.

KITTEN SEASON TIPS:

Spring and summer are kitten season in our area, which usually means more kittens being born while shelters and rescues are already near capacity.

If you find young kittens, do not assume they have been abandoned. In many cases, the mother cat is nearby and may be away looking for food. If the kittens are clean, warm, quiet, and not in immediate danger, the best first step is usually to watch from a distance and give the mother time to return.

Kittens may need help if they are sick, injured, cold, covered in fleas, in danger, or crying continuously. If possible, contact a local shelter, rescue, or experienced foster for guidance before moving them.

If you're able to safely catch and foster the mother cat with her kittens, that’s often the best-case scenario. Keeping the family together gives the kittens their best chance while also making it possible to spay the mom once the kittens can eat on their own.

Cats are pregnant for about nine weeks, and an unspayed female can have up to five litters per year, with around four to six kittens per litter. That is why one unspayed cat can quickly multiply into many more kitties needing homes.

Here is more info on what to do if you find kittens outdoors!

RESCUES/SHELTERS TO REHOME/HELP WITH FOSTER:

Rescues and shelters are often full and may not be able to take an animal immediately. Be prepared to foster at home during the process.

NOTE: When rehoming an animal, check vet references to ensure you are placing the animal into a safe and loving environment. Some people will take free animals for unsafe or exploitative reasons.

If you are interested in fostering an animal, you can also reach out to these organizations.

LOWER-COST SPAY/NEUTER AND VACCINATIONS:

Spayed and neutered pets can have lower risks of certain cancers, infections, and health complications, helping them live longer, healthier lives. Spay/neuter also saves the lives of animals you’ll never meet, because fewer accidental litters means fewer animals entering shelters and more resources for the ones already here.

SNIP in Vancleave, MS - https://snipms.com/
Save A Stray: https://www.saveastray.org/
Friends of Mobile Animal Shelter: https://fomaspets.org/request-help

The Mobile SPCA also offers $10 off spay/neuter coupons that may be used at select veterinary clinics, including Semmes Animal Hospital, Animal Hospital of Mobile, Highlands Veterinary Hospital, Oasis Veterinary Hospital, and Great Oaks Veterinary Hospital. Prices are set by each vet and may vary, so call the clinic directly for current pricing, fees, and appointment availability.

NOTE: Spay/neuter appointments may require a bit of a wait, especially for spays. Be prepared to schedule a month or more in advance. Pregnant cats can still be spayed, and spay-abort is a common part of rescue work. As heartbreaking as it sounds, every new litter stretches already limited shelter and rescue resources. Preventing one litter can mean more food, foster space, medical care, and adoption opportunities for the animals already waiting for help!

Hot Damn Y'all Weez Finally #1: Alabama has the nation’s worst bankruptcy rate, per 100,000 residents

Upvotes

Don't worry the economy is booming, all the polls are fake, and MAGA gonna save US all.

None of the rankings should surprise anyone with average intelligence.

"That’s according to data from the U.S. Courts and Census Bureau population estimates, which shows Alabama’s bankruptcy filing rate is roughly 142% higher than the national average.

In fact, most states fall between 80 and 180 filings per 100,000 residents, so Alabama isn’t just at the top of bankruptcy cases, it’s in a different tier entirely."

Oh we are definitely in a totally different tier of shit in this state

I actually freaked out when I saw this. Been a fan of Peyton ever since Rodrick Rules. Really hope it’s just not her, not that I’m complaining, and they’ll bring in some of her co-stars, especially since both Grayson Russell and Debby Ryan are from Alabama.

Dolly Parton Murals

Upvotes

Does anyone know if any Dolly Parton murals (plural) are scheduled to go up throughout the city?

I'd like to see several.

She definitely needs to have some yellow in there.

Please someone make this happen.

Help spread the love and cheer she had.

Now to the good stuff:

Advice Weather

Upvotes

I will be moving there for school and I am wondering how the weather is as far as rain goes. Since it’ll be just myself I was thinking about commuting with a motorcycle, but I will opt out if the rainy season is a lot. I know it gets hot which is fine, but how often is the rain? And is there a lot of rain? Plus I heard there can be hurricanes since it’s near a beach.

Edit: Thank you for all the advice!

For those who offered recommendations for our trip, thank you!! The weather was amazing. We stayed at Malaga Inn. Walked all over the place just taking in the views. Amazing food at Chicken District and Chucks Fish House. We were blown away by the Mardi Gras museum. Craig was an amazing guide. His enthusiasm and knowledge of Mardi Gras and Mobile made us want to know more. We are already planning our next trip!

Advice International Exchange Student (Spring Semester) deciding between Western Michigan (WMU) and South Alabama. Need advice!

Upvotes

Hi! I'm an exchange student from Portugal coming to the US for the Spring semester (Jan - May). I'm majoring in Cybersecurity and I have to choose between WMU (Kalamazoo, MI) and South Alabama (Mobile, AL).

Which one would be better? I love warm weather and originally I was going to FIU in Miami, so Mobile sounds great for that. However, I heard Mobile is more of a commuter school and WMU has a much better traditional "college town" vibe. Which one would I have the best college experience and has the more stuff to see and do?

Pics Old Mobile Video Footage?

Upvotes

Target at the mall recently finished remodeling and completely changed their layout, and it had me reminiscing about their layout in the late 90s-early 00s.

Then I started reminiscing about the mall in general, and Mobile itself and it had me wondering, does anyone here know where to find video footage of locations around Mobile in the past?

Found someone's "dashcam" footage of them Driving around Mobile in 2006 and that was pretty cool, but sadly uncommon in an age before smartphones with good cameras.

I wish I had the foresight to document things like that when I had a camcorder in the mid 2000s.

I think I want to start documenting around town now in the present so that in 30 years I can reminisce about the 2020s in Mobile.

EDIT: Found some videos of just what I was talking about, all from old news reports, most so far involving the mall. I'll be editing this OP with any more vids I find later

Unknown Station Report from 1994 about Traffic on Airport Blvd, posted on Instagram, that shows footage of the many stores and businesses open on the stretch of Airport Blvd between I65 and Azalea

WKRG Report from 1996 about the Grand Opening of the Playground Express at MOH Park, aka the old, cooler, wooden playground before the current one was built and opened in 2017. Maybe it's because I was a kid, but the wooden playground felt so much bigger. And shadier. I hate how hot and lacking in shade the current playground is at MOH.

NBC 15 Footage of a Soup Cookoff in Bel-air Mall, January 1998

2010 Fox 10 report of black friday shopping at Bel Air Mall, not a lot of focus on the stores themselves, moreso interviews with shoppers.

NBC 15 January 2014 Report about Mall sales following the Christmas Season, the entire, under 2 minute report takes place aboard the now-gone Carousel at the entrance to the mall.

2014 NBC 15 report about Bel Air Mall being bought by Rouse Properties, shows lots of B footage of the mall and many of its stores (SEARS is even still there) that are no longer there. I wanna say only a handful are still even there today.

Future Cook Out Location on Schillinger

Upvotes

It's been almost 4 years since KFC closed, and Cook Out has been sitting on the property ever since.

It turns out they have changed their plans, and instead of renovating the old KFC building into one, they plan to demolish the old building and build a new location like their others, with a double drive-thru, and a "meat packing facility", presumably to prepare burger patties for the locations in the area.

This and other permits are stuck in last year, but it appears they are working with the city to secure any needed zoning or permit adjustments...

Lost cat - Midtown, Spring Hill / Woodlands Ave

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hi, kind of panicking right now but I'll be as clear as I can. Sometime in the last 24 hours, my cat got out of a house on Levert Dr N. She's incredibly friendly and approaches strangers, so I'm hoping that someone who's seen her manages to see this post. I'd guess she's somewhere in the neighborhood consisting of Levert Ave, Levert Dr N, Dubroca St, Woodlands Ave, De Sales Ave, Portier Ct, and Stanton Rd. But realistically she could be anywhere at this point.

Her name is Cinderella, though if she'll actually answer to it is another matter, cats being how they are. She's about a year old, mostly white with some black spots on her head, back, and tail. Identifier-wise, she has a gray flea collar with no text on it.

Ultimately this is on me for not getting a collar that has my phone number on it. I know this is a long shot, but if by chance she's come up to anyone, please message me. Thank you.

Looking to Hire Industrial/Commercial Photographer

Upvotes

Hi Everyone!

I’m a Marketing Manager at an engineering firm based in Canada. I’ll be flying down to visit a client in Mobile, and I'm looking to hire a local photographer and videographer to capture some of our work on-site in Mobile.

The shoot will be primarily industrial/commercial with the goal of capturing machinery, equipment, and site operations etc.

This will be my first time coming to this part of the US so I have no contacts and I'm also struggling to find relevant photographers on Google, so I thought I’d try Reddit!

If you’re an industrial/commercial photographer and videographer, or have a recommendation, please feel free to DM me your email or leave it in the comments along with your portfolio.

I’ll reach out from my work email with more details.

Thank you so much! :)
