Announcement Reddit blocks Gumroad links without notice

Upvotes

Hello Houdiners,

I wanted to give people here a heads up that Reddit blocks links to Gumroad site-wide. Posts are removed without any notifications to the moderators. We can manually reinstate them, but without any notifications it's something we have to manually dig around for.

This ban includes both posts and comments. If your product is on Gumroad or a domain "powered by" Gumroad, any post linking to it will be removed by Reddit (again, it's not us doing it!). We have no control over this ban and again the only thing we can do is manually "un-remove" posts if we notice them.

I recommend anyone selling digital products here to consider another service, like Ko-Fi or Paddle or Patreon, or at least link to something that is not directly a Gumroad page.

We get too many posts from new users asking "how do I learn Houdini"? The wiki now has the answers. Look there first before asking more specific questions here.

NEW USER [Houdini Engine] Generating Unity material using Copernicus

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hi all,

I recently figured out how to get Houdini Engine to work in Unity 6, and I have been tinkering with it all morning, but one thing I cannot figure out.

Say I have a procedural material I have made in Houdini using Copernicus that I want to apply to a Unity Mesh.

I have found this part in the Doc, but I am struggling to understand what to do with this information:

https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/unity/materials.html#generate

As far as I know, there is a shader that comes with Houdini Engine that attempts to generate a Unity Material. I assumed that this shader is "Houdini/URP/StandardLit". I then put down a COP Preview Material node and hook up all the COP Null nodes, and the material works on the Houdini Side.

Bringing this into Unity however and the material seems to just not work. The shader just defaults to the standard `Universal Render Pipeline/Lit` and the material does work, is there something I am missing here?

Help Best workflow for simulating gold chains with heavy pendants in Houdini?

Post image
Upvotes

I’m looking for a good workflow to animate/simulate gold chains like Cuban links, chain links, etc., especially when they have a solid/heavy pendant attached (like the reference image).
I’ve been using Vellum String for the chain and usually get pretty good results. The problem starts when I attach the pendant: since I need it to stay rigid and interact with the chain, its weight sometimes pulls the whole chain down and stretches it way too much.
What methods/workflows would you recommend for this kind of setup? I’m open to approaches other than Vellum String as well. Mainly looking for something stable that gives believable chain + pendant motion.

Time Warp in a for loop

Upvotes

Hello Guys!

I'm jamming my head against the wall trying to seep some points before instantiating a animated geometry.

What i'm trying to do:

A group of bird flying. I used MOPs move along curve so the points follow an art directed path.

Now I want to speed up some points so it reaches the goal faster as see in some flocks of bird flying, some of them just speeds up.

I was trying to do a time warp inside a for loop but i just cant get it to work...

Anyone has a tip or a better idea to achieve this effect?

Wrinkle generator

Upvotes

I tired of manually model wrinkles, so I built this.
Its consist of three nodes:
First - Cuts creator,
Other two - General and Chaos will make visible wrinkles based on the cuts.
I think I spent a week or two creating and debbuging this HDA.

Help Voulme Source keeps resetting?

Post image
Upvotes

When I use volume source in the flip sim, the 'initialize' section keeps resetting (getting back to initialize position). And the flip system doesn't work. I updated the software thinking it's a bug but no change. Anything that might cause this? Thanks!

PS: It works when I switch it to a pop source instead of volume source.

Help Volume Loss flip sim

Upvotes

Hi!

I’m having an issue with volume loss when trying to fill a PET bottle using a FLIP sim.

I’ve tried:

Changed Volume Motion to APIC (Swirly)
Increased Max Substeps to 5
Changed Separation Rate to 0.5
Increased Grid Scale to 1.5

I’m not sure what’s causing the issue. Could it be that I’m working at too small a scale?

Any ideas what I might be missing?

Simulation Apple Slow Motion Splash | FLIP / Karma XPU

Upvotes

Some surface tension tests I started a while ago and finally decided to finish up. The main reference was typical slow motion commercial stock footage of fruit.

Used proximity masks against the apple colliders and ground to dynamically adjust viscosity, surface tension, and forces to simulate adhesion. A simple wetness map solver was used to drive roughness and diffuse map parameters during render.

Apple models are free 3D scans.

Rendered with Karma XPU.

Offering free Houdini help / demo reel reviews in exchange for English practice

Upvotes

Hi everyone 😊

I’m a French Senior FX Supervisor with 10+ years of experience using Houdini. I currently lead an amazing FX team in a French studio. Before that, I worked as an FX TD, and I’ve also been teaching Houdini for just as long.

I’d be very happy to help with anything related to Houdini or VFX, for example:

- demo reel / portfolio reviews

- all-level guidance and Houdini support / debugging

- lessons on effects / procedural modeling / TD work

- mock interviews

I’m not looking to be paid. My main goal is to practice speaking English with native speakers. I also need to record a course in English as part of the Houdini Teacher Certification process.

If you’re interested, feel free to comment or send me a message.

this video shows a nice way of doing this in blender. I am aware of the dirt skirt method, but that feels a bit clunky compared to the geo nodes version...

Can anyone explain how to create this energy/ribbon effect in Houdini?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to recreate the glowing blue/purple energy effect shown in the reference image.

I’m mainly interested in the thin energy trails that flow, twist, and create those looping shapes around the main energy line.

Can anyone let me know how to achieve this effect in Houdini? I’d really appreciate it if someone could explain the workflow or point me toward a tutorial.

I’m thinking about using curves, particles/POPs, noise, and Sweep/PolyWire, but I’m not sure what the best approach would be.

If anyone has done something similar in Houdini, could you please let me know how you would approach it?

Thanks! 🙏

Help How do you work with scenes in Houdini and Cinema 4D?

Upvotes

I used to work with Houdini for FX with an Alembic of the scene made in Cinema 4D. The thing is, now I will start doing all the stages except maybe render. In addition, I should use assets modeled and shaded in Cinema.

Which pipelines do you have? How do you work?
Is there a way to send the materials from the model if both of us are using Redshift?

Thanks.

Scripting How to make string group in nearpoints() - before I forget and to help others

Upvotes
string gr = sprintf("@name!=%s", s@name);
int pts [] = nearpoints(0, gr, v@P, ch("radius"), chi('maxpoints')); removevalue(pts, );
i[]@pts = pts;

Before I forget - wanted to write this down in case it helps someone. I forgot how to do this, tried searching hard online and remembered somehow so wanted to write it down.

How to make a group in nearpoints by removing same attribute from possible neighbors. Warning that this is slow though, so be sure to only do this once, or manually delete similar neighbors after the fact in a for loop.
