Hello! So we found a tiny snail on the produce at my work, and I didn't want the little fella to die. I took him home to put in my garden, but long story short I got a terrarium and his name is Carl. He's only a really little guy, his shell is roughly 12mm across. I've been doing a lot of reading but I'm worried I'm gonna fuck this up and I really want Carl to be happy and healthy. Here are the things I'm worried about:

1) The terrarium itself. I got one from the pet store but I don't think it's very good and doesn't stay humid despite misting twice a day. I read it needs to be at least 1 gallon which it is, but I'm looking at buying this one, it's a bit expensive but I've decided to quit vaping to fund it lol. I also got a hygrometer which seems accurate and the humidity seems to get up to around 65%.

2) His food. I've been giving him a mix of veggies. I'm worried about pesticides so I've bought some vegetable plants and a daisy bush to grow safe veggies and flowers for him. I know not to give him lettuce or cucumber, I've been offering pak choy, zucchini, mushroom, broccoli and tonight I gave him a leaf of spinach. I've definitely seen him eat some broccoli and zucchini, but it barely seems like he's eating at all and I don't know how much he should be eating because he's very small. I've also tried giving him defrosted bloodworms twice but he won't go for them. He also has plenty of cuttlebone available.

3) His behaviour. I learnt that they are nocturnal which makes sense because I only see him moving around at night. Is it normal for them to not move much? He pretty much just hangs out upside down on the lid of the terrarium except in the evening when he sometimes comes down to his veggie bowl. Is he unhappy? Could he be unwell? I also read that wild snails can have worms, how do I tell if he does? He seems to be pooping well at least. Also should I have a tiny water bowl for him? I read that they get their water from their diet and droplets from misting the terrarium.

These are the big things but I just want Carl to have a really nice terrarium life. I'm riddled with generalised anxiety disorder which makes a lot of things very hard but watching Carl exist brings me a sense of calm, and I genuinely love him and am so invested in him. I'm just so scared he's gonna die because I did something wrong. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: One is alive! So far.

A work colleague said he had some GALs who had babies and asked if I wanted some. Went to collect them and he had them in a takeaway container with virtually no substrate other than some black goo which he said used to be some “but they ate it all”.

He said some he noticed had died but I could take the alive ones he said were moving that morning. No money exchanged. Ended up taking 5.

However, all of them have sealed themselves in.

Now they all have a very faint fishy odour which I’m hoping are still alive but it’s from the bad conditions. but one has a really strong odour. I’m assuming the very strong one has passed away, it’s also sealed but the seal is kinda wonky, and I can see faint bubbles to one side. I’ve separated it. Currently got all of them in lukewarm spring water to see if they revive.

I’ve gone from being very excited to being a bit stressed and sad. Looking for some advice.

Last night a large portion of my fish died, but this snail made it out alive! Been enjoying watching him this evening after losing so many others.

Hi everyone,
I’m worried about one of my snails. He’s been sleeping a lot lately despite regular misting, and he now sleeps deep inside his shell, when he used to sleep with his head out. You can see right inside the shell rim in the picture.
Yesterday morning I woke him up, he explored for about an hour, then went back to sleep and hasn’t moved since. I don’t think he has eaten.
Something else worries me: since June, his foot grips less and less when he sleeps up high, and he falls from the ceiling of the enclosure almost every day. I recently changed the substrate (I was using peat, I switched to coco fibre) and he always has access to calcium.
My 2 other snails in the same enclosure are doing perfectly fine.
Has anyone come across this before?

Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit but I'm desperate, I need this information for some very specific writing I'm in the middle of. I've tried googling but all I've gotten so far are terms for a snail's shell or stuff about skincare via snails, nothing concrete for what the skin (exterior layer of the soft bits) itself is called.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hello everyone! Can you please help me? My achatina snail hides inside shell and doesn’t come out. It has a wet fine terrarium with soil. She hasnt been eating for the last 4 days. I don’t know much about snails and am really worried about it. Maybe it’s because it is September and the weather has become colder?

I often find myself wishing my snails could enjoy the food I like, and I get sad I can’t share it with them

Soo, I got this snail 3 weeks ago, I was TOLD he was a garden brown snail, but he formed some “teeth” in the entrance of his shell, so I’m not sure anymore. Brown garden snails do not typically have those. Anyone have an idea of the id?

Hello ! i have 3 common garden snails, located in Utah. i have them housed in a 10 gallon tank & i've been using Eco Earth for their substrate. i do have a temp & humidity reader in the tank so i can make sure it's ideal for them. but i noticed 2 of my snails have a little bit of peeling on their shells & are turning white. i've looked into this a little bit & it sounds like it could be from the substrate being too acidic ? so i would like to maybe change the substrate but im getting a LOT of mixed answers when i look into this lol so any advice would be appreciated 💙

I gave a singular spray, and then realized I have a wild terrestrial snail living in my terrarium. It hides a lot and sometimes I forget. It is not a huge terrarium, but not super small either. I found the snail in its burrow and pulled him out once I realized my carelessness. Is it safe to put him back? Do I need to make an entire new enclosure for him? It was on one plant. Can I just trust that it won’t touch that plant?? Theoretically I could let it outside but it’s such a joy to see it. I’m very new to snails.

Just Ceres eating some Bok Choy

so, I recently noticed that my snail has a couple white pieces in its shell (as shown), and they are solid and connected. I’m assuming they are a normal occurrence to shell growth, but I’ve just been wondering if they might affect him or if they are normal. He is about 3 months old and he is a brown garden snail.

In my original post I wondered if my Allogona sp. snail might be pregnant or diseased after noticing some weird, gelatinous goop on top of its head as well as a new snail-mate. After closer inspection you can definitely tell the other snail isn’t the same species and the head goop retracted?? Completely disappeared. Is this normal? I saw another Reddit post that talked about head swelling being a sign of snail puberty (snuberty).

I noticed a weird, gelatinous form on my snail’s head. It’s a wild caught, likely Allogona sp., from Riggins, ID that I’ve kept in a terrarium since May 2025. I have had no other snails in the terrarium but just noticed a new one crawling around today after noticing the head goop on my original. Not aware of land snails keeping eggs on their head, but I do have tons of isopods in the tank that would certainly love snail eggs.

The most adventurous little snail I have ever had, she was the greatest escape artist despite the tank being sealed shut. Unfortunately she hurt herself too badly in her latest escape and she had to be put to sleep :(
