Is Ubuntu still collecting data when telemetry is disabled?

Upvotes

I'm considering switching to Ubuntu GNOME, but privacy is one of my concerns.

I know Ubuntu's telemetry can be disabled/opted out. My questions are:

  1. If Ubuntu telemetry is completely disabled, does Ubuntu still send any usage/system data to Canonical?
  2. Are there any background services that communicate with Canonical even when telemetry is disabled?
  3. Does Snap/Snap Store collect any information independently of Ubuntu's telemetry?
  4. Since some parts of the Snap ecosystem are closed-source, how can users verify exactly what data is being sent?
  5. Is there any documented network traffic that Ubuntu sends to Canonical for reasons other than updates, package downloads, Snap functionality, crash reports, etc.?
  6. If I remove/disable Snap and turn off all optional telemetry, is Ubuntu reasonably privacy-friendly?

I'm not asking whether Ubuntu is "spyware" in the sensational sense. I'm trying to understand exactly what data leaves the machine and what can be disabled.

I'd especially appreciate answers from people who have actually monitored Ubuntu's network traffic (Wireshark, tcpdump, OpenSnitch, etc.).

Gaming on Ubuntu is a hazzle...

Upvotes

I really struggle with Gaming on Ubuntu, I don't know... Maybe I'm missing something... I play all games via Steam, overall they work fine, but I have a hard time with resolution management...

I got a 4k Monitor (3840x2160), an AMD Ryzen 7, an AMD Radeon RTX 7900 XT, and I use 125% scaling. But I cannot get ingame resolutions right, no matter what...

In Fullscreen, it scales up to 6000something, and I cannot change it at all.
In Frameless window I can change it, but (at least in Star Wars Zero Company), everything above 1920x1080 simply is pixels looking like 320x240 on the full screen, or it just jumps partially out of the monitor
And window mode is simply shit, showing a floating window on the desktop, also having issues with more than 1920x1080.

Why is it so hard to get gaming right? I wanted to try SteamOS, but that'd require a full system wipe, and I need my old windows partition...

xrandr BadValue error

I’m actually losing my f*cking mind and about to smash my PC to pieces. I’ve been trying for TWO WHOLE YEARS to switch to Linux and fix this absolute b*tch of a resolution bug. At this point, every time I hear or see the word "resolution", I get triggered.

Every single time I install Ubuntu—or literally ANY Linux distro—it's the exact same story: it just refuses to set the resolution properly.

The ONLY workaround that ever "worked" was nuking the GPU drivers completely. But I obviously can’t do that sh*t because the performance turns into total dogsh*t. I can't even play a 720p video smoothly (which hurts even more because my internet is capped), let alone run heavy 3D stuff like Three.js to stress test the card.

Look, I know my card (GTX 750 Ti) is from 2013 and far from powerful, but it still gets the job done! On Windows, resolution works flawlessly out of the box with zero issues. This is specifically a Linux/xrandr problem with my drivers—xrandr just straight-up rejects every custom mode unless I purge the drivers.

So I need the real sweaty, touch-no-grass, non-showering Linux gods in here—the absolute wizards who live and breathe Linux—to fix this cursed bullsh*t for me. I swear I hate Linux so much right now, but I keep coming back because I love it, only for xrandr to slap me across the face and tell me to go crawling back to Windows like a dog.

All I want is to hit 1600x1200 just like I seamlessly do on Windows, so I can finally throw Windows into the absolute trash bin where it belongs. I swear to God I'll stop showering like a true Linux neckbeard if someone helps me fix this cursed resolution once and for all.

Intel AX201 gets hard blocked after S3/deep sleep resume on HP 14s-dq1xxx

Upvotes

Hey! I'm having a weird Wi-Fi issue on an HP 14s-dq1xxx laptop with an Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201.

I'm running Ubuntu with kernel 7.0.0-30-generic. I've also tested 7.0.0-29. BIOS is F.36 and the Wi-Fi card is an Intel AX201 (PCI 00:14.3), using the iwlwifi driver.

Wi-Fi works perfectly after boot, but after deep sleep (S3) it becomes hard blocked. rfkill shows "Soft blocked: no" and "Hard blocked: yes".

The kernel log during resume shows:

ACPI: EC: EC stopped

ACPI: PM: Low-level resume complete

ACPI: EC: EC started

ACPI: PM: Restoring platform NVS memory

ACPI: PM: Waking up from system sleep state S3

iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: reporting RF_KILL (radio disabled)

iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: RF_KILL bit toggled to disable radio

I've tried rfkill unblock all, unloading/reloading iwlwifi, unloading iwlwifi before suspend and reloading it after, iwlwifi power_save=0, forcing PCI runtime PM on, pcie_aspm=off, ec_no_wakeup, different kernels, updating linux-firmware, and resetting BIOS to defaults. None of these fixed it.

s2idle works correctly, but I want to use deep/S3 sleep because s2idle keeps the fan running.

Windows on the same laptop can suspend/resume and Wi-Fi works normally.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Could this be an ACPI/EC, iwlwifi, kernel, or HP firmware issue? I'm willing to test kernel patches or modify the Linux driver if someone knows what to try.

Wallpaper clips when using 3 finger swipe up gesture

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I recently got rid of windows on my laptop and installed ubuntu 26.04. I've been a linux user in the past so I'm fairly comfortable with it. I set up my Gnome taskbar thingie to be a dock instead, however there's one thing that's bothering me more than it should lol and it's how the wallpaper cuts and reappears whenever I do a 3 finger swipe up to see my open apps. Does anyone how to fix it, or mitigate it while allowing me to keep the taskbar as a dock?

Thanks in advance

Edit: typo in ubuntu version

Heyyo people, how do you create a fake monitor?

Upvotes

I don't know what it is called exactly but i wanna use my phone as a second monitor, now on windows it is a trivial task just download spacedesk and call it a day. but on ubuntu it is quite different. i tried using deskreen and other apps like it and although they do work, they only mirror display and i want to extend it. now to do that i think i need a virtual display adapter but i have no idea how to do that unfortunately. So, how do I do that? sorry for the inconvenience.
