Currently on Windows 11 I use high contrast mode and larger default font sizes to because I'm low vision. Is there a combination of Linux distro and front end UI(KDE,Gnome,etc) which allows me to recreate this out of the box in the base settings? If not how hard would it be to recreate for myself?

Hello there! So, I’m in the process of designing/creating a whole theme/idea. I am planning to switch from Windows to Linux as I just cannot stand Windows anymore.

My question is, say I want to pop out a discord chat or any kind of social texting app, is there a way to make it pop out but also have a custom theme (I’m an artist so I’ve been working on making custom everything for my future Linux experience including a bootloader animated icon and other such things!)

For example, the kind of customization I am looking to go for is similar to how in a twitch stream, the chat can have custom bubbles and such on a background or some form of pre made box? I want to create something like that.

I am perfectly fine if it involves coding as well (I have basic coding knowledge from my grade 10 coding class (HTML, and Python and Java), as well as in University I delved further into game development coding such as what ifs and if nots etc etc, plus more in depth coding. Therefore I would not be scared to get into such a thing (would honestly be a fun after work project)

The breech should be fixed now but is it possible to check for any DDoS malware installed on the server or some other malicious software? What are the recommended steps now short of reinstalling everything?

Hey everybody.

Basically, the title says it all. I am planning on having a dual-boot on my main PC (linux distro main and just in case windows, because of work), and I was wondering which distro is good for video editing using DaVinci Resolve but also for playing some games from time to time (RDR2, BG3, Manor Lords).

I know that distros have problems with audio in general (if this isn't outdated info), so I am wondering if there is a good distro that is somewhat easy to use. I am familiar with Linux, and I can get around tech in general, but I am not a pro at it.

When I bought my laptop more than a year ago it came with Windows. Which I never even activated. I installed Debian 13 immediately. Works like a charm!

Now I've gotten a notification from the Debian Update UI about Secure Boot DBX configuration and Secure Boot Database Configuration. Which surprised me because I update everything through apt and it doesn't find these two.

Clicking on them revealed:

Now why would I get Windows UEFI updates on Debian? I've checked with gparted and there isn't even a Windows partition. There is no Windows option in UEFI either. Only some 16 MB Microsoft Reserve Partition that doesn't even have a file system, mount point, or label.

My software repos are all Debian (and Steam).

What the hell happened here? Can I ignore them? Can that MS crap ruin something in my UEFI if it does get installed?

Hi. Awesome community here. Im running an older pc setup, with a nvida 1660ti gfx card, lasr year october till recently I have started experiencing issues with linux crashing. Hyprland was seg faulting and i couldnt fix it. I recently switched to cachyos and had a similar issue and switched to x11 but I notice im still getting browser crashes. Im currently on latest nvidia proprietary driver iirc 610 something on doing sone research that version of drivers are unstable and I should be on 590 drivers. Like with windows I thought its always best to be on latest drivers? How do you avoid your os builds from breaking? I do enjoy the journey of learning. Looking for interesting books to read and stuff to check out.

As from some older posts of mine, I've made a large move to Linux over the last year, but currently my "main" external drive with data is a 2TB SSD with:

* Whole drive encrypted with BitLocker

* NTFS partition

* A VeraCrypt exFAT volume within the NTFS partition

The drive mounts fine in Linux, BitLocker decrypts, NTFS is mounted, exFAT volume mounts in VeraCrypt.

Since the move, I came across lots of issues when working with data in the NTFS partition: all fine until some file operation goes bad or some other issue that causes the computer to force-shutdown and that causes the NTFS partition to need repairing - which most times requires me to boot into Windows to run chkdsk.

So I want to move most things to ext4 (and apparently ext4 can be accessed in Windows via this Paragon software (I'm using Linux 95% of the time but would need to access main data sets in Windows still, but occasionally).

So I'm considering moving that VeraCrypt exFAT volume somewhere else, and reduce the NTFS partition and create an ext4 partition. But now both would be under BitLocker drive encryption.

I believe it should work - even if the resizing takes long.

When I boot I notice via my mic on discord and system tray it doesn't open. I open autostart to see that it failed.

Normally it'd boot no problem

I am using the flatpak version (normally flatpak my last choice but it has some features others don't for easyeffects)

Hello! Going through and checking apps before switching to mint cinnamon but noticed that wallpaper engine (which I love) isn’t doable… so is there a way around this?

I heard of something called plasma that has some live wallpaper support but… Linux mint has cinnamon… could I just… install mint cinnamon, install plasma desktop, uninstall cinnamon for a best of both worlds?

If someone knows another app or something that would be cool too. Just trying to get live wallpapers is all

been having this problem for months now, since i installed linux. audio defaults to my headphone port instead of the speaker port in the back. when i first moved to linux, it was coming through the speaker port just fine, but for some reason, it switched to the headphone port. i'd heard of people having issues with that when dual booting with windows, but for one, i don't dual boot, i'm completely on linux mint, and for two, the change happened while my pc was on.

now, i seen one post on another site saying to use a command to install some other audio program and use it to tell my pc that the headphone port wasn't connected. that worked, but stopped once i rebooted my pc, so it didn't fix the core of the problem.

i want to be able to use the headphone port still as sometimes i play horror games where audio is a big part of the gameplay such as older fnaf and phasmophobia. so disabling the port outright isn't something i'd prefer to do, and if the cause is another issue, then disabling the port wouldn't be a fix, it'd be a bandaid.

how do i fix this?

I was installing Ubuntu on my Dell using a bootable USB, but my laptop shut down during the installation because the battery died. Now it’s stuck on the Ubuntu loading screen.
I tried pressing F12 and saw an option called “8GB Partition,” but I’m not sure what it is or whether I should select it.
How can I fix this and boot from the USB safely?

Guys idk what happened when I formatted my computer today. I use 2 ssd sata 3 (256gb each) , one nvme m2 1tb and a HD 1TB . I have a good computer ryzen 5700x , 3060ti … but this time when I formatted my Linux (Ubuntu 26lts ) is getting too long to start IDK what can I do.
When it was with windows it was about 30 secs for completely start. I installed the Ubuntu in one of the SSD , the HD is for data and my M2 for softwares and things at all. Did I make something wrong?

I want to make it usable again but I don't think it can run windows this would be my first time doing something like this

First one was an old backup drive I was using. No longer need that stuff so I formatted it. It was originally formatted as EXT4 and it only took a few minutes.

This 2nd one is taking a lot longer though. Probably due to it being an NTFS format originally. I'm formatting it as EXT4 as well and it's been going 20 minutes so far. I've been reading about how long these things can take. Up to 25 hours? I have a fan on the heard drive, I just don't know if my external drive connector will function that long. Maybe I should throw a fan on it as well?

EDIT: Oh. And now it's done. WHEW! I was getting worried there. This 2nd one took twice or maybe 3x as long as the first one did. Now I have a 3TB to look at and maybe format.

I want to move from Windows to Linux. I mostly use my PC for gaming. I have a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. Which distros should I choose from as a noob who is into gaming and where can I find a step by step how to guide to get away from Windows?

Is there a way to sceenshare a headless x11/Wayland session to my android tablet, so that it can act like an external monitor? (with native scaling) Do you know of any program that can do that.

Preferably an app that can connect via USB and has touch/stylus support.

tldr: read title

I’m looking to completely drop Windows and switch my personal desktop to Linux.

Let's begin with some of my background…

I have used Arch Linux as my laptop OS during university (~5 years).

I'm currently working as an SRE and also manage my own homelab, so I'm very comfortable with linux, terminal and sysadmin tasks in general.

I'm not looking to spend endless hours tinkering or fixing breakage anymore. It was very fun to do it back then when I was in college but now I want something reliable. Maybe not that "just works" but like I said, not endless hours checking why something got broken.

Now… My concerns and use cases…

One of my main concerns is that I have a RTX 4070  (though I might switch to AMD eventually… in the future… probably not soon).

I do some creative work: OBS streaming, video editing in DaVinci Resolve, and digital art (Krita, Aseprite, I use a Huion tablet, canvas 3gen, I don't remember the exact model right now). Future plans include Godot. And I know that these tools are available and work on linux, but should be easy to access/update on the distro.

gaming, basically just steam. I have a steamdeck and most of my games run on linux. So it should be configurable almost like a steamdeck or at least similar… in this area I'm pretty new so I don't know what to look at aside from proton. But I am willing to learn. (so maybe here is the only area willing to spend some time on it)

All my Dev work is handled on my work laptop, so my personal rig is purely for creative work and gaming.

I have these 3 distros that I'm considering:

1. openSUSE Tumbleweed: Currently my top candidate. Rolling releases like Arch, but snapshot integrations (Snapper/Btrfs) sound like a great safety net.

2. Fedora Workstation: Reliable, up-to-date, but slightly slower update cadence than rolling.

3. Arch Linux: Familiar, but I'm wary of maintenance fatigue.

openSUSE Tumbleweed seems to hit the sweet spot for me right now, but I'd love to hear your experiences… Especially regarding Wayland + NVIDIA stability on modern kernels, streaming/editing setups, or any other distro suggestions and feel free to ask whatever information I'm probably missing.
