Moderator Post Attention WLU Students: Mental Health Resources Available

Upvotes

Hello students,

There has been a concerning increase in the frequency of posts and comments regarding fears, depression, loneliness, and other concerns relating to mental health and wellbeing.

We are aware that it is a very stressful time especially with midterms ongoing so the moderator team would like to ensure that all students are aware of the resources available to Laurier students on the student wellness centre website. There are a variety of services available meant to cater to you and your needs. These services are available to all students and should be taken advantage of. These services also include counselling, which is covered by your student insurance and the student services fees that you have already paid for.

Below are some other resources for students in need of urgent help:

- Good2talk.ca (Call 1-866-925-5454 or Text GOOD2TALKON to 686868) for 24/7 support
- Kids Help Phone (Call 1-800-668-6868 or Text 686868)

- The Suicide Crisis Helpline (Call or text 988)
- Call here 24/7 anytime Call Here 24/7 anytime [1-844-437-3247](tel:1-844-437-3247)
- Call Laurier's Special Constable Service 519-885-3333

- Emergency Services (Call 911)

This post is being made purely for informational purposes. We want to foster a safe and inclusive environment both online and on campus. However, many first year students (and upper years) are not aware of the professional help that is available to them.

Please take care of yourselves and reach out to your friends who you know are struggling or not in a good mental space.

Moderator Post WLU & UW Student Housing Community

Upvotes

Hi WLU!

This subreddit is often filled with housing related questions and advertisements. We want to keep this community less like a rent space bulletin board and more so a place where students can socialize and help one another.

However, we know how important it is to find roommates and housing near campus. So the mods team has launched r/RentInWaterloo, a dedicated subreddit for UW and WLU students to find roommates, housing, sublets, and lease takeovers in Waterloo.

The goal is to keep housing posts centralized, student-only, and scam-aware, instead of flooding both r/uwaterloo and r/wlu.

If you’re currently looking for housing (or will be soon), feel free to check it out or post. Hope this helps!

Discussion First day here and already got called a slur…

Upvotes

So I was walking alone down the street at night after hanging out with some friends and when I pass this group of people, some guy says smth akin to “Hey, look at this- (insert Chinese slur here; I’m not Chinese)”.

Granted, he seemed drunk and was with a group of friends (maybe he was trying to be funny for them?) but it still pissed me off. I wanted to confront the guy but ended up ignoring them since I didn’t want to start anything especially since I was alone.

Anyways, great way to start the school year! (😬)

fr though is this to be expected here or did I just get hella unlucky?

I feel so lonely at university

Upvotes

I feel really sad and lonely at university. I’m a first year who recently moved in and I’ve only been here for about four days, but I already feel like I messed things up for myself. On the first night, there was an event in my residence but I was with my family so I missed it. Now it feels like everyone has suddenly found someone and I missed my chance to integrate into friend groups. I didn’t really have many good friends in high school and felt very isolated back then, so I was really hoping university would be a fresh start for me. Instead, I feel like I’m missing out on so much and becoming even more isolated. People are nice enough to say hi and introduce themselves, and I have done that too, but everything just feels so cliquey right now. I don’t know how I’m supposed to get past the “hi, nice to meet you, what’s your major?” stage and actually make friends. Whenever I try to talk to people more, it feels like I’m inconveniencing them or forcing myself into something. I don’t want to invite myself into friend groups or make people feel like they're obligated to include me if that makes sense. It feels like I’m just sitting around watching the university experience I wanted happen around me and happen for other people instead of actually getting to experience it myself. I’ve tried convincing myself that it's fine being independent and that it doesn’t matter if I don’t have friends right now because I’ll eventually make some. I’ve been going to events and places by myself but it doesn’t really seem to be going anywhere. It just feels humiliating walking around alone and seeing everyone else have friends and people to go places with, especially because I really do want that social connection. There's times where I also end up hearing about events that I would've loved to go to but end up missing out because I don't have anyone to go with. I don’t want to keep missing out on things simply because I don’t have anyone to go with, and I don’t want to have to experience everything by myself because it just feels sad and lonely. I don’t know if it’s just FOMO, but it’s gotten to the point where I’m becoming so anxious and stressed out about going out that there's now times I’ve been skipping meals just so I have an excuse not to leave my room. I haven’t had dinner for two days now. I tried going to the dining hall this morning, but it was packed and everyone seemed to already be sitting with their friends. I didn’t want to feel like a nuisance by trying to insert myself into a group or invite myself somewhere, so I just left and didn’t eat breakfast either. I’m not asking for some huge friend group or anything like that. I understand that maybe the idea I had of university in my head was unrealistic, but I just want one person I can do things with. I want someone I can go to the dining hall with, go to an event with, sit around and talk to, or literally just do anything with without feeling like I’m bothering them or that they’d rather be somewhere else. I just don’t understand why it seems so easy for other people. I see people who have already found their groups and are constantly going places together, and it’s really hard to watch because I really am trying. I’ve been going to things by myself, introducing myself to people, and putting myself out there even though it’s really uncomfortable for me, and I still feel like I’m getting nowhere. I really hate it and don’t like it here. I know it’s only been four days and I’m probably getting ahead of myself. I’m hoping things will get better once classes start but I’m really scared that university is just going to end up being like high school all over again.

Upvotes

Hi! i’m going into my second year of History and I’m wondering what advice upper year students have! I generally did pretty well first year will mostly 80s with the exception being one failed course but i’m retaking it in the winter. Discussion Plz help: first yr bba student

Upvotes

I love about 6 hrs away from WLU and moved in for the first time on Friday. I don’t drink or enjoy partying and wasn’t really aware WLU was a party school until I got here. I feel like I don’t fit in with the environment well and am considering withdrawing and moving closer to home. It feels dumb withdrawing this early but idk if I will ever fit in with my program and I may always feel lonely . It’s intimidating seeing people already partying/being in big groups so early while I still feel new and homesick. Will it get better or should I look at other unis?

Does anyone want to be friends lol

Upvotes

It's a bit of a shot in the dark, but I haven’t been able to make many friends, and I’m about to start my third year. So, if anyone, especially if you're a girl (I am too), wants to be friends and hang out on campus during the first day, shoot me a DM.

Some things about me:
-I love going to the movies, I try to go at least once a week or every two weeks!! + they have arcades
-I live in KW so if we get along we can eventually have fun Christmas sleepovers lol
-I’m apart of many fandoms
-I play a few instruments

Tips for 2nd year bba

Upvotes

Any upper years lurking in this subreddit, do y’all have any advice on how to do well on many of the 2nd year bba courses, mainly when it comes to the more math focused subjects? I’m not really good at math and I barely passed MA129 so any advice would be appreciated.

Discussion Going into second year BBA + Fin Math Dual Degree

Upvotes

I’m looking for some advice from upper year or graduates of BBA + Fin Math.

I’m about to start my second year in this program, and I have to say I am a very anxious person. In terms of how I found first year to be I’d say that things went smooth enough in terms of GPA doing very well in classes like MA103 and certain business classes but finding some struggle in MA120 as proofs and math theory are completely new for me. Maybe I’m just venting at this point but i feel it’s important that I share how I feel. At this point in time I don’t want to drop to just BBA however I’m extremely stressed about what lies ahead. I’m definitely someone who works very hard in my classes but I wouldn’t say I’m actually that smart as things come slower to me than lots of others.

I guess i’m trying to get a picture of if anyone who’s done this already and succeeded ever felt the way I am currently feeling and what they did to overcome this stress or at least realize they are capable of doing it as I constantly see nothing but people explaining the path ahead as nothing but death.

Thanks!

Anyone down for some sidequests this fall!

Upvotes

I'm a UW student, and a few of us built a weekly mystery side quest box for students.

I posted about this 4 months ago, and we're running it back this term!

Update: we added a mature student option so the regular student and mature student crowds stay separate. We also updated the events flow and updated a bunch of other stuff hehe.

A bit more about what this is:

Think Timeleft or 222, but students only and totally free.

Every week you get surprise side quests like:

  • farmers market runs
  • art/clay activities
  • standup comedy
  • escape rooms
  • hiking
  • random little adventures around KW

You can go with friends, or sign up solo and get matched with other students who also wanna get out more this fall.

We have 300 Laurier/Waterloo students already onboard and we would genuinely love to have more Laurier students try it out this term!!

Sidenote: this whole thing is a passion project run by 4 Waterloo students, we are always open to any feedback!!

Check it out here: https://sonder.click/

Question Move in WCH

Upvotes

My move-in day was Sept 4, but I had just gotten back from vacation, so I only picked up my keys and brought some clothes.
I now have the rest of my stuff (mini fridge, chair, rug, bedsheets, etc.). Can I bring everything in tomorrow, Sept 7? And can my parents come inside to help me carry it to my room?
I’m in WCH. Thanks!
