Upvotes

Hello r/nova we are 10 years deep into the hole-in-the-wall list! Thank you to everyone for contributing every pick and recommendation for the list and participating each year.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to update the map or list since I am getting married this year, but I'll for sure get everything updated before the next year. Anyways time to give the community your best recs and new discoveries for restaurants in the area.

The rules are simple:

šŸ“ Give us the restaurant name and location

🚫 No chains allowed!

šŸ‘ "+1" if you love the recommendation

šŸ‘Ž "-1" if you think it's whack

4 year old attacked by dog. Animal control is not help. How do I proceed? NSFW

Post image
Upvotes

My 4 year old was calmly walking on the sidewalk when a german shepherd & its owner (walking with retractable leash) was coming towards him on the same sidewalk in the opposite direction. As they passed, their dog lunged at my son in an unprovoked attack. Unfortunately, I was walking too far behind him to intervene, but he immediately started wailing & running towards me. Police & EMS were called & they advised he be checked out at the ER due to several puncture wounds & 1 small laceration. He was transported to the hospital & checked out/treated.

Now, here is our dilemma. We reported this incident to animal control & an officer came out. This dog has attacked another dog a year prior (documented with animal control) & many neighbors have come forward with stories about these dogs being aggressive. The officer basically said our sons wound is not severe enough to register the dog as a "dangerous dog." He said the bites are "minor scratches." Please see photo. Do these look like minor scratches? There are 4 puncture wounds that broke the skin & 1 laceration.

We had just moved into our dream gated community. We Moved so our children can play outside freely without us having to worry as much. Now my son refuses to play outside in fear of getting attacked. Our end goal is that this dog be reuired to have a proper 6ft leash & is muzzled when it is being walked in the community. Not asking for them to rehome or put the dog down. I'm in shock as to how aggressive dogs are protected. Does anyone have any experience on this matter & how we should proceed?

We are located in Prince William County in VA.

Flock camera misuse in Alexandria

Upvotes

According to his article, "The Alexandria Times uncovered more than 50 instances of Alexandria police officers improperly labeling the reasons for their searches on Flock"

"The Times verified that at least 81 of the cameras were stationed in the city or on its immediate border – a figure higher than the Alexandria Police Department’s previously disclosed 61 Flock Safety cameras and the Sheriff’s Office’s two."

FH FURR... the worst

Upvotes

This company came to my house the guy walked around with a laptop and looked at this and that . Then he went outside and looked at my unit . Then put some notes in his computer and proceeded to tell me it would be between 30 and $40,000 to replace my air conditioning . That it needed to be replaced . Or if I did want it fixed it would be about $12,000 . I called a small locally owned HVAC company the next day and they came out and fixed it for $250

22 dogs on euthanasia list for Weds 9/9— please foster or adopt!

Upvotes

šŸ†˜There are 22 amazing dogs still left on the euthanasia list for the Prince George County animal shelter this week. We have about 24 hours left to match them with Foster’s adopters and to get rescues to tag and pull. šŸ†˜

āž”ļøFor those unfamiliar with this process, each week the Prince Georges County animal shelter puts out a list of dogs that have a week to be fostered or adopted or they will be put to sleep the following Wednesday morning when the shelter opens due to shelter overcrowding. It is devastating and the pace is relentless.

šŸ™If you think you could possibly adopt a dog or Foster to save a life or if you have any connections with rescues, that might be willing to pull in a single dog, please reach out and comment below or message me. We are racing against time at this moment. šŸ’”

ā°The shelter is open tomorrow (Tuesday 9/8) from 11 to 7 PM. Please arrive at least two hours before close of business to ensure you can save a dog!

Other Tyson's Corner Mall is Packed

Upvotes

I've not been to the mall for a long time. Today when I went there, I was surprised at how busy it is. I spend like 10 minutes to find a parking spot and it is absolutely packed inside.

Dulles Mall is so depressing to visit now

Upvotes

10 years ago the place would still be pretty busy on the weekends. Now anytime the place just feels like a ghost town with many empty fronts and that doesn't even include the buildings outside the mall. Just depressing to visit now.

Just almost hit someone WALKING on 395.

Upvotes

I was headed home from DC on 395 south in the left lane when the car in front of me braked and swerved suddenly. I was pretty far back from them so I couldn’t see why they did that until my headlights shined on a MAN WALKING all over the place. I braked and changed lanes in time. In hindsight, I should have slowed down and turned on my hazards to warn the cars behind me but it all happened so fast.

I have no idea how he could have gotten that far on the highway. This was right before exit 4 for Seminary Road. I called 911 and they said they received multiple calls but the police were having a hard time finding him.

I really hope the man did not get hurt and is able to get the help he needs.

Please be careful and take care while driving. The highways here have become something else.

Rant Should I get a bike bell as a human pedestrian with no bike?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Scenario above happened this evening in Arlington. I may be in the wrong here, and I’m open to feedback.

I have shoulder checked a handful of people in Nova after running here 15 years (never pregnant women, never children, never the blind, never the elderly, never the stroller, never the disabled, never anyone smaller than me, never anyone less privileged than me).

I often run in mulch, dog excrement, dirt, puddles, roads, bike lanes, gravel, to avoid the above exact scenario. I run nearly every day. The fact that I have shoulder checked <5 individuals who behave as the above - groups not moving aside for anyone running walking or biking towards them or behind them - should demonstrate this is not the typical treatment I bestow upon fellow Novans.

I am considering a bike bell to ring at groups who are on a crash course with me. Has any walker/runner in nova done this? It seems rude, but is it as rude as running my shoulder into someone?

We have 80 Flock cameras in Arlington - whose Al facial recognition error has put a grandmother in jail for 6mo, a women spent some days in solitary because her license plate was misread, a veteran was tracked 526 times in Norfolk without being suspected of anything

Upvotes

these stories are outcomes from the use of Flock cameras that happened in other places (sources at the end).

There are other 10 cases of people being, held at gunpoint, being put on a hotlist where one day they’ll just surround you at a parking lot, pull you over, and detain you multiple times. cases from Wikipedia only. Technology failures, lack of transparency from Flock and abuse by users on innocent people with access to your ā€œwork upā€ profile:

Flock knows : license plate, Car make and model, color, bumper stickers, roof racks, decals, visible damage, GPS location and direction of travel

They use Police data: arrest records, dispatch logs

They buy:

  • SCommercial data broker data they buy: you family members, SSN, emails, phone numbers, relatives and associates
  • All available social media tied to you

Theyre being integrated with Leonardo’s SignalTraceĀ Ā to map who you are with, and where you go, over time.

  • Your phones
  • smartwatch, smart rings
  • earbuds
  • fitness trackers
  • Your car’s infotainment system
  • car Bluetooth.

This tells them what devices you and your car have, where else they appear, when and how often like

  • any Visits to health clinicsĀ
  • ProtestsĀ
  • Houses of worship etc

Arlington participates in a multi-agency data sharing that can share with the FBI, DHS, and CBP.

You don't have to be a suspect to be tracked

It doesn't stay inside your police department

ICE has tapped into this nationwide camera network, per data obtained by 404 Media. (404 Media). so to meet monthly arrest quotas they use Flock and have made wrongful arrests.

Leaked searches weren't "find this stolen car." They searched instead for ā€œpeople who visited three or more retail locations in three daysā€. People who drove through a given neighborhood in a given window.

Arlington County announced it was incorporating Flock Safety technology to support investigations. (Arlington County). It spent aboutĀ $125,000Ā in FY 2026 to buy and install cameras. In its FY 2027 budget proposal, Arlington PD: "Non-personnel increases primarily due to adjustments to the annual expense for funding for camera enforcement technology ($319,390), contracted parking enforcement services ($460,291) [...] These increases are partially offset by the removal of FY 2026 one-time funding for maintenance for the legacy vehicle license plate readers ($125,000)ā€ p. 422-423

The camera budget increased alongside withĀ cuts of:

  • cut a school crossing guard
  • cut 8 parking enforcement staffersĀ (from 17, a 47% cut or essentially half)
  • cut 2 police captainsĀ (from 13).

Traffic??

Upvotes

I am sitting here on Labor Day evening still astounded at the day's experience with traffic. We travelled from Manassas to Silver Spring (outer) to see family and ..........I have never seen such light traffic on 495. Slow downs we usually see every single time.....nada. This was midday, so I thought okay, people are late leaving the beaches so when we come home later, it will be hell. Nope. Best traffic I have EVER encountered on this route. Any input? Any ideas? I pictured thousands of people trapped on the Bay Bridge due to something. But I can find no news of any problems. I will remember this day forever. LOL.

Are people really like this?!

Upvotes

My neighbor threatened to call the cops on me because I parked too close to the intersection (both side streets in Falls Church City, one doesn’t allow parking as it’s an emergency route). I moved our cars to the side street because we have contractors coming tomorrow. Could you not have asked politely? I did move the car but damn you ruined my whole evening. After I jumped the damn car because it wouldn’t start!

I have a driveway but when things happen (like needing a new roof) those folks need the space. I’ll admit to not knowing how far I should be from the intersection but he said 8 feet and, surprisingly, it’s actually 20 feet. So he was also violating the law he threatened me with because one of his cars was also on the street within that limit??!

This probably seems super trivial but (a) I’ve lived here 12 years and occasionally parked on that side street for contractor access and no one has come at me like that, and (b) I know he can’t know this but I’m caring for a husband that’s terminally ill and already had a super hard day, week, several months and that is just not how you approach someone, especially a neighbor.

Anyway, I shouldn’t be as shook up as I am but it was unnecessarily aggressive. Just suggest I should move like for real. My therapist will help talk me down tomorrow I guess 😭 everything seems a little extra when you’re already doing the most.

Please be kind to each other! And neighbor, if you happen to read this, just say hi and feel free to pat my big dumb dog when I’m walking him by your house. He may be huge but he’s friendly and soft and has never met a stranger.

Rant Occoquan appreciation post

Upvotes

I grew up in NW DC and just never felt like it was anything special. For some reason, even in my early 20's (I'm 27 now for anyone wondering), city life and I just never got along. Maybe it's that I rushed through all the museums and landmarks as a kid and lost interest completely after the 20th time. You can really only walk around Georgetown so many times.

As soon as I got my first car, I spent most of my time wandering around smaller towns in MD and VA (and occasionally, PA and WV). Personal favorites include Chincoteague, Harper's Ferry, Great Falls and Occoquan. I stumbled on Occoquan when I was 19 and just absolutely loved how gorgeous it was. I'd come back occasionally over time until the stars aligned and I found myself in a position to buy a nice place in town. I've now been living here over a year and I'm still in love with the place.

I really like the fresh air, seeing the entire night's sky when I look up, walking around town (especially the pier) at night, being able to walk down and kayak whenever I want, the crazy range of cuisines (and genuinely amazing restaurants and cafes). The neighbors are quiet and everyone's really nice. While I don't think anyone else my age lives here and socializing hasn't been the easiest thing, it's worth it. I just can't see myself living anywhere else, at least for a really long time.

Metro Losing an item on the Metro

Upvotes

Has anyone here ever successfully recovered an item they lost on the Metro? I was given a special family ring by my mom over the weekend and I’m pretty sure it fell out of my purse at some point last night on my round trip from Pentagon City to Mt. Vernon Square. I’m upset and I know my mom would be heartbroken if it turns out to be permanently lost. I filled out a report with WMATA, but I’m cynical that someone would just keep it and try to sell it if they found it.

Rant The Meadows Condominium Summer pool, putting it on blast....

Upvotes

.....and not for praise but condemnation. This pool fucking sucks ass. I've been here for years and the pool has always been chill and nice. But this year it was a fucking disgrace.

There are these groups of teen boys who act like complete savages. It's one thing to rough house and goof off. It's completely different to cuss and use racial slurs (generally as a white man I feel like I have no room to tell young men of color that they cannot take ownership of that nefarious word, but these young men are not black and they were not using it in a way of showing brotherhood) and generally have no self regulation and self awareness.

Today my family and I were going to attend the pool for some relaxation for the last day of the season. But as usual this summer those teens were going the extra mile to being a pain in the ass. They eventually turned on one of my sons friends and grabbed him , said "Fresh meat!"

That's when I had to step in. "Yo! The kid said stop, so fucking stop!" They tried to talk back, but I shut it down "you stupid fucks dunce?! Jesus Christ!?"

They stopped immediately and calmed down for like 10 minutes. But the air was still thick with awkwardness, could cut it with a knife.

But they started acting up again. Then one of the boys was having his friends rough up one of the others in their group...."catch that n-word! Catch that n-word!" At that point I looked at my wife and she knew. We either leave or I do something heavily illegal. So I rounded my two young children and Wife up and we left. I told my son if I ever catch him using that word it would be his ass in a sling.

Several times they have been reported and confronted by other parents. The life guards don't do anything. They just scratch their balls and watch shit on their phones while sitting on their asses. Our security team are completely worthless, I honestly do not know why we spend money on them. The only way to solve this is to issue week bans. You act up, yellow card. You get a second yellow card, red card banned for the season. The only solution to young teens is setting rules, test the boundaries get the fine.

Rant done.
