Missing McArthur Center and shopping malls

Thumbnail
Upvotes

It seems this area is so limited now and lacking being able to go shop for clothes and have the family and friends experience. Grab food together while out. Now its imo so difficult mainly having to shop online. Family in other states are so fortunate to still have malls and lots of places to go shop and try on clothes. Now I panic when something comes up suddenly and have to rely online!

Failed

Didn't know him well but connected after he asked for help on here 3 weeks ago. Helped him with the ride he needed, then messaged him a few times and reminded him to take care of himself. When someone says they are going to take the last decision, believe them please. I think I held onto the hope he might not go through with it. I now realize that if he had been someone close I would have reacted very differently and checked on him every day. Instead, I let weeks go by. He did what he said he would. I sensed he was a good person from the little insights he gave of his views on the shit show this country is turning into. He was obsessed with current events and probably too smart for his own good. When he had to give up his animals he had nothing to live for. Depression is a silent disease and mental health is not a priority in this country. He had no mental space left to fight, navigate bureaucracy and get help. I should have held his hand a little longer. I was unsure of boundaries and of finding myself involved in more than I could manage and ended up failing as a human being.

If life brings a similar complicated situation your way, please don't fail like I did and "hope" things get better for them. I don't know that he would have eventually found the will to keep fighting. I'll stay with that doubt and my own sense of failure. I should not have quantified my help according to whether the circumstances were too complicated and how that could affect me, even in terms of my own mental help. I should have tried and get others to help him as well but I didn't. I held on to the hope he wouldn't get to the extreme and I found out today. In hindsight it was incredibly coward and inhumane on my part. Don't make this same mistake. Act however awkward you feel extending a hand, however complicated things seem in this day and age when we all have our guard up an worry about boundaries and self-preservation. I will carry this guilt forever and want to avoid others feeling this way. I am so sorry.

moving Moving from California

Upvotes

Sorry if these questions gets asked alot.

I’m a new grad considering a job offer at the newport news shipyard, and move from LA to Newport News, Norfolk, or Hampton.

What would be the best area for commute, safety, and things to do? Looking for an apartment or studio for around 1k/month or less. Planning on staying for 1-1.5yrs. Currently have been looking at the Deer Park and Kempsville areas

How does DMV inspection work here? Is it better if I bring my car from socal, or look for a beater here?
I’m concerned about rust.

What’s the best local gym chain here, Onelife fitness? Are there any synthetic running tracks open to the public, maybe high school or community college stadiums?

Thanks for the help

Reasons why I love Norfolk and why military folks who complain about being stationed here can suck it

Upvotes

Was away for about a week and dropped my neck pillow outside on the street on the way out. I didn’t realize until I got in the Uber that it had fallen out.

Now I either have a stalker or people around me are just very nice and caring overall but I came back to the same travel pillow sitting outside on the staircase of my apartment complex a week later. Someone must have seen me drop it and even though they didn’t have to do that (I expected it to be thrown away), someone went out of their way to come in and left the pillow out for someone who may be living in the building nearby.

It’s these random acts of kindness, even silent, that make me love this city. I suffer from depression and it’s not always easy to talk to neighbors, but they look out for you here. It made me think about all those military guys complaining about being sent to Norfolk — yeah, we’re not a wealthy city, but if we’re such a dump, have you ever thought the problem is you? I’ve lived in California and Hawaii and although great places, the people here are some of the kindest and most genuine you will meet.

So for any more military folks complaining about not being sent to the more glamorous places — well, maybe the higher ups just thought you weren’t good enough for those places anyway 😂 water your lawn where you plant it and it will grow. This is a great town and I say this having just gotten back from NYC — the sidewalks are clean and the streets are nice and quiet. Yes there’s always room for improvement, but I found myself wishing to come back home for sooner for some peace and quiet.

Side note: the people who do get stationed here that I’ve met are sometimes obnoxious and arrogant. They have a chip on their shoulder about getting stationed here. Apologies to the ones who are here and just doing their thing and being nice. We appreciate your service.

Fordite from old truck plant?

Post image
Upvotes

I know the Norfolk truck plant was shut down 20 years ago or so. But is there any way of finding Fordite from that plant?

I have a coworker who worked there back in the day and he said he would just pick up chunks of it over by the painting area and give it to people.

I figure since it was a truck plant there would probably be a few interesting chunks floating around.

I have a good friend who is an artist and I want to give her a unique gift from here.

The Old Dominion University community gathered outside Rollins Hall on Friday to honor Lt. Col. Brandon A. Shah, who was killed six months ago shielding his students during a shooting at Constant Hall.

The ceremony formally renamed the Army ROTC Annex as the Lieutenant Colonel Brandon A. Shah Wing and unveiled a seven-foot granite memorial statue marking his life and service.

Military leaders remembered Shah as a decorated combat pilot and dedicated alumnus who expanded ODU's Monarch Battalion enrollment.

Looking for LGBTQ-friendly CPA recommendations

Upvotes

Hi! I’m looking for recommendations for a CPA who works with small businesses and can assist with taxes, business administration, and ongoing tax planning. My business is based in Virginia, and I have business/residency considerations involving both Virginia and North Carolina, so familiarity with both states and some remote availability are important.

I’d especially like to support someone who is LGBTQ themselves and/or genuinely supportive of LGBTQ individuals and causes, with a preference for a minority-owned practice if possible. I’d much rather find someone through a personal recommendation than choose blindly online.

Any recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

housing Downtown rental rates are unhinged

Been here for a few years. Got notice that my rent is going up $250/month this fall. For what? Because the mall closed? Because biblical floods happen 3x as often now? Would love some insight into the market lmao

For the first time since 2000, the Battleship Wisconsin will move

The Battleship Wisconsin will be inaccessible to the public for three days next week as it undergoes repairs.

The historic ship will be moved about 5 feet away from the downtown Norfolk pier it’s been docked at for the last 25 years to allow crews to replace its marine fender, according to Nauticus, the maritime center which operates the venerable 82-year-old battleship as a museum. The repairs will be completed from Sept. 8-11.

As part of the project, crews will remove the pedestrian bridge leading to the ship and release the massive chains that secure it to the pier.

Nauticus is encouraging the public to use this period as a unique opportunity to see the downtown staple in a new light.

“This is a rare opportunity to see the Battleship Wisconsin in a way we haven’t experienced since she arrived at Nauticus more than 25 years ago,” said Stephen Kirkland, Executive Director of Nauticus. “Moving a ship of this size — even just a few feet — is an impressive undertaking, and this important maintenance work will help us continue to safely care for the Wisconsin and preserve the experience for generations to come.”

Apartment advice

Upvotes

I am currently living in an apartment with persistent cigarette smoke and weed smoke issues. It seems as though the previous tenants were smokers and the entire place smells faintly of smoke. When I leave, my clothes and belongings have a lingering smoke smell. My entire life is being disturbed by the constant worry of this smell and I am in a high level profession where smelling like smoke is unacceptable. I have asthma and this apartment issue is causing me severe issues. I have communicated with the apartment countless times about this issue and still nothing. I am struggling a lot with this issue. What can I do?

This is truly affecting my mental health and work performance. I have tried everything, air purifiers, candles, oil lamps, everything. Please help me. Hint: it’s a nausbaum apartment…
