Tamil and malayalam have much difference. I'm not sure if learning one will help you with the other

Written malayalam and formal malayalam spoken in news channels is easy to understand than written Tamil because of heavy Sanskrit word usage in Malayalam. In Tamil the more they start using pure Tamil words the more difficult it is to understand unless you learn.
Spoken Tamil in movies , TV interviews is a lot more easier to understand than spoken Malayalam in movies.
It doesn't make much difference which language you start with

If you concentrate on the script, knowing two of Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi, will help learning the third one easily
You have to choose, based on what language you communicate with people around you on a daily basis. This will help your learning to be quicker

What chances do you have, in talking to people in Tamil/ Malayalam. You have to choose the language with higher chance. If chance of both are same, do head or tail (choosing one over the other doesn't make any difference)

Tamizh in the sense pure tamizh matches with malayalam more than modern tamizh
