Discussion / ചർച്ച Does colours represent any emotions in malayalam?
I have seen in English, certain colours represent an emotion. For example, blue is the colour of sadness, red is for warnings, etc.
Does these meanings remain same in malayalam? Or in malayalam is there an entirely different emotional representations for colours? Or is this not even a thing in malayalam?

Other / മറ്റുള്ളവ This has been bugging me for a while..
This is the album art of Aksomaniac's 'Amsham'/'അംശം'. What's bugging me is that the Anusvaaram/അനുസ്വാരം (ം) should be placed horizontally right after the letter it is paired with. When it is written under the letter it becomes the ഉ sound (ു- കാരം). The way it is actually written now is read Amshu/അംശു.
Just a small rant. Bye.

Discussion / ചർച്ച Why do we tend to pronounce ശ്ര and ശ്രീ as സ്ര and സ്രീ in names? Even though that pronunciation is incorrect, why aren't people eager to correct it like they do with other pronunciation errors?
We tend to pronounce
ശ്രീ ലക്ഷ്മി as സ്രീ ലക്ഷ്മി
ശ്രേയ→ സ്രേയ
ശ്രുതി→സ്രുതി
ശ്രാവൺ→സ്രാവൺ
etc..
I feel weird to pronounce people's names starting with ശ്ര correctly because others tend to pronounce it as സ്ര.
I think there are also some words in Malayalam starting with ശ്ര which we mispronounce as സ്ര, but I can't remember right now.
For people having confusion reading this-
We don't pronounce ശരത്ത് as സരത്ത് or ശാലിനി as സാലിനി but for ശ്ര we mispronounce

Help / സഹായിക്കുക Need helping verifying AI generated translation
Hi all,
I’m going to start working on a theological comic: is this translation accurate? (If this post violates any rules, I apologize in advance and I’ll remove it) thank you! :)
Let the seventh day hallow the Holy One,
ഏഴാം ദിവസത്തെ പരിശുദ്ധനായി ആചരിക്കുവിൻ,
Who halloweth the Sabbath, and gave rest to all that live.
ശബ്ബത്തിനെ വിശുദ്ധീകരിക്കുകയും സകല ജീവികൾക്കും വിശ്രമം നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തവനെ.
The Blessed One Who wearied not
ക്ഷീണിക്കാത്ത അനുഗ്രഹീതൻ
has care for mankind, and has care for the beasts.
മനുഷ്യരെയും മൃഗങ്ങളെയും കരുതുന്നു.
When Freedom fell under the yoke,
സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നുകത്തിനടിയിൽ വീണപ്പോൾ,
He came to the Birth and became bond to make it free:
അതു സ്വതന്ത്രമാക്കുവാൻ അവൻ ജന്മം ഏറ്റു ദാസനായി.
He was smitten on the face by servants in the judgment hall;
ന്യായവിധി മന്ദിരത്തിൽ സേവകരാൽ അവൻ മുഖത്തടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു;
He broke the yoke that was on the free, as Lord.
സ്വതന്ത്രന്മാരുടെമേലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന നുകം കർത്താവായി അവൻ തകർത്തു.

Resources / ഭാഷാസഹായികൾ My trip across Kerala inspired me to add Malayalam to my open-source language-learning app
galleryI travelled across Kerala last month and tried to learn as much Malayalam as I could along the way.
A couple of years ago, I built a free and open-source language-learning app for myself because Duolingo did not offer Kannada, Malayalam, or most other Indian languages. I wanted something that made learning a language feel more like playing a game.
After my Kerala trip, I decided to add proper Malayalam support to the platform.
I am still very much a beginner, and I know that building a course is not the same as truly understanding a language. Malayalam is one of the languages I genuinely want to learn, even if it takes me years. For now, the course will need corrections, better explanations, more natural examples, and continued review from people who actually speak the language.
That is why I am sharing it here. I would really appreciate honest feedback on the course, especially if you notice incorrect translations, unnatural sentences, pronunciation issues, or anything important that is missing.
You can try the app here:
Varnamala is free and open source. I currently fund the entire project myself, including its development, hosting, and infrastructure costs.
If any native Malayalam speakers, teachers, or language enthusiasts would like to help review and improve the learning material, you can apply here:
I have attached a few screenshots so you can see what the app looks like before trying it.
Please be direct with the feedback. I would rather find and fix the problems than let learners practise something incorrect.

Help / സഹായിക്കുക Meaning of 'കാലത്തെപ്പണി'; source: Kovilan's Short Story.
The phrase occurs in: "'കാലത്തെപ്പണി' കഴിഞ്ഞ് അമ്മ തിരിച്ചുവന്നിട്ടും അപ്പച്ചൻ മൂടിപ്പുതച്ച് മുക്കിൽ കിടക്കുകയായിരുന്നു."
Does this refer to someone getting their morning chores (washing oneself etc.) done? Or does this refer to a specific kind of work that, say, a Dalit peasant/maid would do early in the morning?
The scare-quotes makes it look like the former, but
Is anyone aware of a social aspect of life (Dalit, peasant/working-class, poor, probably Thrissur in 1950s–70s) that makes it a specific kind of work that, say, a Dalit peasant/maid would do early in the morning??
edit: The story hints that it is some sort of the latter, because the mother is given some meal after the morning work.

Resources / ഭാഷാസഹായികൾ I built an English ↔ Malayalam translator focused on a better, simpler experience
Hey everyone 👋
I’ve been working on an English ↔ Malayalam Translator and recently released a new build.
There are already many translation apps available, so I wanted to focus on something different: making the everyday translation experience simple, clean and easy to use.
Some of the things I’ve focused on:
- Clean, modern UI
- English ↔ Malayalam translation
- Voice translation
- Camera & image translation
- Pronunciation support
- Saved & recent translations
- Currently ad-free
The main idea is simple: you shouldn't have to deal with a cluttered interface or annoying interruptions just to translate a sentence.
I'm especially interested in feedback from Malayalam speakers and people learning English.
What feature would make you use an English–Malayalam translator every day?
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cc.htpl.english_malayalam
I'd really appreciate honest feedback—especially about the UI and overall experience.

Discussion / ചർച്ച Do these malayalam words have any European origin?
I can't help but notice the uncanny resemblances between these malayalam and English words. Are they related etymologically?
1) Captain - Kapithaan
2) Cash - Kaash (money)
3) Eight - Ettu
4) Sack - Chaak
5) Almirah- alamara
6) Sahib (hindi?) - Saayip
7) Madam - madamma 😂
