Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

Upvotes

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Upvotes

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering English Seeking: Russian Offering: English

Upvotes

As title says I'm looking for friends who speak Russian, I'm 22, male, I work internationally and currently I'm residing throughout Europe, to give you a good idea of my timesone. I'm American so I speak English and I'm pretty good at Spanish as that's my family background.

I enjoy foreign languages as I am currently learning Russian, I like drinking a lot of tea and trying to cook many different foods from many different countries, speaking of all over the world I travel a lot I've been to almost every continent and I love animals like monkeys, raccoons, red pandas and my favorite animal is the cat ofc.

I really enjoy the gym but I mostly do a lot of running and hiking outdoors because Germany has a lot of beautiful trails, sometimes I like to stay at home and play games on steam (would be happy to add some of y'all and play some day)

Music is also a big part of my life, my mom introduced me to basically all of my favorite artists that I still listen to this day, I'm from Chicago Illinois.

I really don't let conversations die when I'm close to someone, I don't ghost people, if I don't want to talk I'm upfront about it and I very rarely don't want to talk at all so it'd be cool to make some friends here.

Offering Mandarin offering Chinese Mandarin || seeking Arabic and friends

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm a 25-year-old man from China, and I've recently become really interested in the Arabic language and Middle Eastern culture. I want to learn Arabic properly, and more than that, I'd love to make some real friends from the Middle East.

So if you're a native Arabic speaker from any Middle Eastern country — I'd be truly happy to talk to you! I'm a very friendly, open and easy-going person, always excited to meet new people. We can do a language exchange, share our cultures, or just chat about daily life — whatever you prefer. And of course, I'd be glad to help you with Chinese in return!

By the way, it's not just me — we are a group of Chinese friends who share the same interest. We're all warm-hearted, friendly people curious about the Arabic-speaking world, so you'd be getting to know a whole friendly group, not just one person.

If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to reach out anytime. Looking forward to connecting with you!

Other Offering : Korean / Seeking : Hindi

Upvotes

Hello. I have recently started studying Hindi. However, Hindi is very different from my native language, Korean, so I find many parts of it difficult. I’m looking for someone who can help me with Hindi.

I would like to ask you questions that come up while I’m studying, and you can answer them for me. In return, I can help you with your Korean. Our language exchange would mainly work by answering each other’s questions.

If you’re interested, please let me know. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Vietnamese 🇻🇳 | Seeking: English 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇦🇺

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm a native Vietnamese speaker, and I'd be happy to help someone who is learning Vietnamese — completely free. 😊

I can help you practice everyday Vietnamese, pronunciation, natural expressions, and learn more about Vietnamese culture and daily life.

In return, I'd love to improve my spoken English. I'm especially interested in having regular conversations rather than just exchanging messages.

Maybe we could have a 30–45 minute video call once or twice a week:
🇻🇳 15–20 minutes Vietnamese
🇬🇧 15–20 minutes English

We can talk about everyday life, travel, food, culture, running, or whatever we find interesting.

I'm not a professional Vietnamese teacher, but I'm a native speaker, patient, friendly, and happy to help.

I'd especially enjoy meeting someone who wants to make a genuine international friendship while helping each other learn.

If you're interested, feel free to send me a DM. 😊.
my email: tranchithong@gmail.com.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Offering Spanish Offering: Spanish/English Seeking: Japanese 🇯🇵

Upvotes

Hi! I’m a 30-year-old woman from Argentina, and I’m looking for someone to chat with and/or talk about everyday things, and to make new friends. I really like anime, films and TV series of all kinds

I’ve been studying Japanese since 2020, although my progress has been a bit slow; I’m working my way up from N4 to N3. I’m looking for someone with whom I can practise speaking Japanese more freely, and in return I can offer both Spanish (both standard and Argentine) and English, which is my second language. It’s not perfect, but I get by quite well.

Cheers!!

Offering Korean [SEEKING] Japanese // [OFFERING] Korean

Upvotes

こんにちは、初めまして!

I'm 21F native Korean living in Mexico (I spent most of my life in Korea, so no worries about my Korean skill lol)

I'm currently looking for partners to practice Japanese with long-term. My Japanese is quite basic, and I know only basic Kanji, but I am definitely interested in developing it and being able to speak it fluently some day. I am also quite fluent in English, so I hope that works as well in case we have a minor problem in communicating.

My ideal language partners would be the ONLY natives around my age (18—30)! I don't mind any form of communication, whether it's by text, voice message, or phone call, though I would rather keep it mainly through text due to lousy Japanese issues, hahaha. While we're having conversations, I'd appreciate it if you could correct my messages and suggest more natural alternatives whenever necessary. I'll be happy to do the same for you 🙏
Off topic, I'm not looking for love interests, only, perhaps, friendship 🤭

I will also help you with Korean: vocabulary, grammar (as much as I can explain), and pronunciation—anything you're looking for.
I'm teaching Korean where I live, so I believe that could be an advantage? 😂

As for the platform, I'd prefer to keep our conversations off Reddit, as I find its interface a bit inconvenient to use.
I do have LINE, but I don't mine any others, such as Instagram, Discord, etc.
But please feel free to send DMs to discuss which one to continue with! When DMing me, I would appreciate it if you could include a brief self-introduction of yourself, such as your likes, whether you are currently learning Korean, your goal, or anything else! I won't respond to any effortless messages that only contain "hello" or "hi."

Thanks for your time and attention!

P.S., I will possibly be using a translator for Japanese if I'm not familiar with some certain vocabulary or grammar rules, as I am still in the process of learning them. But please don't consider that like I am not eager to learn the language well. I am noting down every single word and grammar rule that I don't know so that I can keep track of them and study afterwards.

  • Please do NOT DM me if you are NOT a Japanese native speaker who was RAISED in Japan. I am mentioning it specifically because many people who are not natives have sent me private messages, and it frustrates me quite much.
  • I WON'T respond to any messages that go against my post. What do I mean? Those people who didn't read this post thoroughly. I know that it's long, but I consider it important so that we do not waste time. So, I won't reply to any messages or questions, such as inquiries about my Japanese level or a short message without self-introduction.

Offering Russian Offering: Russian (Native) | Seeking: English (Native)

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm Aleksandr, a 45-year-old engineering geologist from Russia. My English is at an intermediate (B1–B2) level, and I'm looking for a serious native English speaker for weekly voice calls. Serious replies only - no language collectors, please.

In exchange, I offer real, conversational Russian. We can talk about everyday life, culture, humor, food, or even geology if you're curious. I'm not a teacher, but I can help you sound more natural and understand real Russian - not just textbook phrases.

Please DM me if you're a native English speaker who is serious about regular practice. I'm in UTC+4, but I'm flexible with time zones.

Offering English Offering: English (American) | Seeking: French, German, Russian, Korean, or Mandarin

Upvotes

Hello,

I'm a native English speaker from the US, looking to learn French, German, Russian, Korean, or Mandarin. I've studied a little bit from each language but a beginner in all of them.

I don't know which one I'd like to become conversational in, I'm just looking for the right language partner.

I prefer to text/voice messaging on whatsapp, but open to try another app. I'm not really interested in doing calls or facetiming, not until we get to know each other and have become comfortable with one another.

I don't mind helping someone who is brand new to English, since I'm basically new in the languages that I'm seeking.

We can talk about anything and converse in both languages so we can both get something out of it.

I was thinking maybe when sending voice messages, we speak in both languages, for example:

Me: Do you understand?

Comprenez-vous?

You: Oui, Je comprends.

Yes, I understand.

Or, we could use a combination of texts and voice messages to help with translation.

I'm looking for a longtime language partner and maybe we can become friends. So, if you're going to message me for a few days and then become a stranger, don't bother replying. Serious, long-term partners only.

P.S. I may be interested in learning another language not listed, I'm not necessarily focused on the actual language but finding the right person to teach and learn from.

Offering Russian Offering: Russian (n), English (C1+) || Seeking: Turkish, Romanian

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm a native Russian speaker. I also speak English at a near-native level (C1+). Happy to help with either.

What I'm looking for:

Turkish: mine is around B1, I use Turkish for work, so I can read and handle written correspondence reasonably well, but my speaking lags behind. I want conversation practice to close that gap, plus help sounding natural.

Romanian: currently at around A0+. I currently live in Moldova. A lot of the times I understand it more then I'd expect. That's probably because I have a background in learning Italian. Anyway, I am at the beginner stage. I want to be able introduce myself and manage simple everyday exchanges. Looking for someone patient enough to start slow, and I'd like to get to a level where I can work in Romanian.

A bit about me: I work in international trade, and I'm moving toward film production. I have a background in theatre, so cinema, storytelling, and how films get made are topics I love. Other stuff: tango, hiking, meditation, video editing.

I'm comfortable with text and voice notes. Calls are an option if we get along and can fit it in our schedules. I am ready to commit to something regular.

If Russian (or English) is on your list, send me a message!

Offering English Offering English ; Seeking: Punjabi

Upvotes

Hi, I’m (25F) Canadian English speaking - looking for a friend to help me learn conversational Punjabi.

I don’t have anyone to talk to in Punjabi day-to-day so it has been hard to pick up speaking the language, I only really know a few words/phrases right now.

I’m mainly looking for someone that has a general understanding of written/verbal English, and wants to practice their speaking/pronunciation of English.

DM me if you’re interested! I’d love to connect :)

**Preferably a woman

Offering English Offering: English 🇺🇸 (Native) | Seeking: Dutch 🇳🇱

Upvotes

Hello, I'm 25M and from the US, and I've approximately reached the low C1 level in Dutch speaking/writing. I'd like to practice with a native speaker, ideally from the Netherlands, to help prepare for a C1 test and to sound more natural. I'm happy to help with English at any level. My particular subjects of interest are classic/arthouse film from around the globe, European languages, engineering/computer science, literature/philosophy/Christianity, and Dutch culture in the workplace/universities/life in general. If some of these subjects are interesting to you, please send me a DM with a little introduction. Thanks!

Bedankt!
