Advice Wear deodorant and change your diaper.
I posted this in the Tampa sub, but should go to all of Florida.
I went to Tampa comic con. That was my first and last comic con. You all smell TERRIBLE. That is all.

I mean they are certainly more main stream then ever, but comic cons do tend to attract a demographic who doesn't always have the best hygiene.

The part that's probably the most sad is, these people are very grown adults in their 30s and up. I get being a 14 year old, getting absolutely boddied on hormones going through puberty, and being a little weird so you may not bathe often or wear deodorant but you grow out of that. I was a stinky anime video game nerd when I was in school, during the era of being bullied for liking that stuff so it was a bit harder, but you grow up and fix that.

I'd like to add: this is very similar in Kpop spaces. It's even worse when we don't have assigned spots for GA so we've been queuing at one point or another since 8am-10am for a 7pm show. I remember well when the artist, while on stage, took time to ask everyone to please shower and/or put on deodorant before the "send off" session after the concert. K-Pop is largely populated and supported by females. What's almost as offensive is many of these people are with someone else or in a group!
I went to an after party that was held in a room in a convention center. I was smacked in the face by the stench of body odor as soon as I walked in. And the room wasn't even that crowded! I ended up leaving for that reason. There was plenty of time to change clothes/freshen up after the concert. The number of times I've wanted to offer a breath mint to the person next to me, breathing out funkdafied toxic gasses from their pie hole is staggering.

Old Spice smells disgusting. Samples should always be scent-free. Nobody wants to smell 30 varieties of anti-perspirant and other perfumes in the same queue or room.
The problem isn’t just anti-perspirant. Bacteria live on body hair. Everybody should be waxing their pits or at minimum shaving. Waxing is best because bacteria live on the hair under the skin. No home = no smell.

I once recognized a student from the college I worked at, at a con, by his smell.
Not even kidding.
He would run around campus in a faded Deadpool zentai and he was rank.
I will give him some grace. Polyester magnifies body odor. I'm sure someone here knows the science behind it. I don't.
But if you wash yourself and your zentai the smell would be minimal. His was not.
I saw another faded Deadpool at comic con and then smelled him.
I instantly guessed it was him and I was right.

I've been to several cons and, for the most part, they honestly don't smell that bad.
I emphasize the word "most" because god damn... there's always at least one person who shows up and single-handedly proves every stereotype about convention hygiene completely right.
Edit: I literally cosplay as fully helmeted characters (I.e. Spartans from Halo, Helldivers, Guardsmen from 40K, etc), and even through all the helmet padding, fans, and layers of costume, I can still smell some of these people.
Like holy shit. If your body odor is penetrating cosplay armor, we have a problem.

A lot of cons now have rules like 4,2,1 - four hours of sleep, two meals, one shower a day required. Obviously they aren’t in people’s rooms but the same folks who forget hygiene often do like rules and it helps a little I think.

Being in Florida adds to this. Costumes and hot humid weather are disastrous combinations. A lot of cosplays are made amazingly well but not in the sense of like modern clothes that don’t make you sweat as much. On top of the occasional weeb being immune to their smell and you have the perfect combo for a smelly convention. It’s a tragedy they don’t host them in the “colder” months.

I was going to say I was at San Diego comic con this year and it wasn’t really an issue. I even went with my friend who is pregnant, and her sense of smell is crazy strong right now - she was okay.
But then, it’s wasn’t 95F and 90% humidity at the one went attended.
There’s no way we could’ve worn the costumes we wore to a Tampa event, we would’ve smelled like death-swamp. I mean, I couldn’t even walk through the target parking lot and into the store when I was living in the Tampa area without my whole back and front wet with sweat. It’s a losing battle there unless your costume is scant, haha.

Honestly, most nerds I know stopped going to these kind of events because it seems like more people hop on the Stankonia Express every year. I damn near passed out the last time I went in a card shop on a game night. Sad state of affairs.

I love festivals and the energy and camaraderie but I literally pack a small bag of small dollar store sticks of deodorant, dude wipes, baby wipes and a couple feminine hygiene products and I always have people remember me for hooking them up every time I go back to the couple festivals I like. “It’s the BO guy!”

I understand that this is a common problem associated with conventions but anecdotally when I went to Megacon years and years ago almost everyone seemed pretty hygienic - but it was ONE GUY that stank up the entire room for one of the panels, and everyone knew who it was but there was no policy at the time banning him since he wasn't intoxicated or aggressive or whatever.
Don't be that guy.

I helped a friend sell corsets in her booth during some of the comic-cons in Florida. I only did it a few times and couldn't stand the smell and had to bow out. It's pretty awful.

I went to a con in Miami years ago, and on the second floor of the space they had the DDR machines next to a place selling food, and the mix of BO and other smells with whatever food they were selling was one of the worst smells I have ever experienced.
Yes, let's give less hygienic overweight people in costumes an excuse to exercise next to food, on a floor where the AC was losing to the body heat of DDR machines and players. Swamps smell better.

I went to comic cons at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles in the 1980s. The hotel was demolished long ago, but I still remember the smell of the mostly male crowd. It was pungent. Rank. Some things, apparently, never change.

Every con I've ever been to has been the same story. I hated getting in line. I would see the same person wearing the same cosplay for multiple days and the spell just got worse. Then I would see that same person at a different con or in the same cosplay same smell.

Didn’t read all of the comments but….being at home most of the time, connecting with others mainly via internet…if I am not in social situations, then my social norms aren’t being tested. Plus some people deal with horrible mental health condition conditions that make it hard for them to connect with individuals in face to face situations. That also contributes to poor self self-care.

My husband is a professional stunt man, and often performed at mega con etc.
He said after performances people would come to take a picture with him and he would have to decline or rush out because he didn’t want the smell getting into his costumes for the day…

I've never understood deodorant, people should just properly wash themselves.
I feel like it'd be even grosser if someone didn't wash themselves and just put deodorant on to mask the fact that they smell like shit, it's like if someone farted next to you but reassured you that the smell is just this fresh bag of popcorn they've got.
But then if you do properly wash yourself, why do you need an additional pleasant under-arm specific scent?

just reading your post mad me gag!!! brought back a recent exposure to a smell i never thought was possible for a living human to emanate. thank God it was in an open air setting, in line to pay for gas. he even overpowered the gas!!! people……my eyes started to water and it was all i could do to not throw up on the spot!! the poor cashier was trapped in the booth, behind plexiglass and had the same reaction!!! I couldn’t even speak to tell him to stay home with that nastiness. There’s no excuse I don’t care no excuse for that.!!!!

I go to conventions in Miami and Orlando. I’ve also been to DragonCon. Doesn’t seem any different to me from other conventions, concerts etc.
It’s not like the whole place smells like human funk. Easy fix: move. But that’s just me. Unless you’re hanging around with a bunch of stinky friends. 🤣
But that’s just me. Then again. It doesn’t bug me as much. It’s sort of part of the experience… so, I’m definitely biased. I get what you’re saying…

No one is saying drown yourself in perfume. Taking a speed stick and making 1 or 2 passes in your pits will not kill you. You can't even smell it but it will prevent BO. You know, normal human body functions. But also you need to shower.
I hope you don't say "I don't like showering."

It’s the weather dumbass! A couple years ago I was at a hopping club in Buckhead (Atlanta). The same time of year. It smelled like straight up ass at 10 pm! Fancy interiors and $20 drinks don’t change the weather. Maybe you should return to where you’re from?! We’ll both be happier!!! And, Florida will be a happier state.

I have never smelled anything, or experienced a texture of air, quite like the check-in hall at Dragon Con the one time I went. I'm talking compared to athletic facilities and farms. Bless them and their dedication and enthusiasm and creativity and love, but oh my god the sense experience was not for me.
