why do you look at her and don't meow?

u/habibisanam 13h ago

u/SignificantCry22 12h ago

Brcause she speaks fluent cat and I’m still stuck on the tutorial 😂

u/Special_KC 12h ago

My cat does this and I do respond! We have entire conversations but I still have no idea what we talked about.

My wife says the same thing about me, funnily enough..

u/ElectricosSuenos 12h ago

Seriously, omg, it's like I never said anything 1000 times after husband stumbles into the same argument. Again.

Your cat was talking about how much she loves you, and she thinks you were telling her how much you love her back 😊😻

u/Dwayne420 11h ago

My little girl Aziza has quite the vocabulary. She's very specific which meow or sound she uses and over the years I've paid close attention and have learned they mean or refer to. She just turned 8 this past June ❤️

u/Dehner1 11h ago

My old boy Kenzo is quite the same. He has very distinct sounds (and volumes) to tell me what he wants. I've never had such a talkative cat before (and such a healthy one, he just turned 14 this year and shows no bigger signs of age)

u/EmbarrassedHabit1899 10h ago

This cat is stunning

u/lvl100shiny 1h ago

I feel like I’ve met your cat before

u/ElectricosSuenos 11h ago

Yeah.

Like "Go in the kitchen and feed me genius. Faster!"

u/gjk-ger 10h ago

I dont believe that cat said that!

She never would call him genius.

u/ElectricosSuenos 10h ago

That's just what my one cat mostly says to me, so it's the first thing I came up with.

When she rants Meow! at me in the kitchen, even if I've literally already got her food out, it sounds like "Now! Now! Now! Right Now! Now! NOW!"

u/Pudacat 5h ago

Mine would have. She was really sarcastic.

u/MissFabulina 11h ago

I had an Aziza...sadly she died last year. She had sooooo many different meows. I always knew exactly what she was saying (or what she wanted, more like). I had her from the literal day she was born (I had rescued her mother - she was a trojan cat!) and she made to 15.5 years and it definitely wasn't long enough.

Cherish your Ziza-girlie. That was one of my girl's many nicknames. Keep on conversating with her!

u/kykid87 9h ago

Asking the real questions

u/purrlfect 13h ago

She's saying hello, also the slow blink means "I love you"

u/Due-Trick-372 13h ago

100% was a slow blink ❤️

u/rom_sk 12h ago

People say this. But I think it actually means “I own you.”

u/Confident-Leg107 12h ago

It can be two things

u/digglerjdirk 12h ago

Si, ¿por qué no los dos?

u/MechanicLoose2634 11h ago

“I love owning you”

u/Fast-Top-5071 3h ago

It's more like a "I think I trust you not to do something startling but I'm not sure."

u/Kalmer1 1h ago

Isn't that the same for cats anyways

u/JustifytheMean 11h ago

More like "I know you can't/won't kill me when I blink". It's a sign of trust not love.

u/Fast-Top-5071 3h ago

I don't know where the "slow blink means love" came from. It doesn't mean that. You will often see them slow blink after a scuffle with another cat in the household. It's more like "I think you probably won't smack me now." Deescalation wince.

u/Terrible_Toy_Breaker 14h ago

Sounds like a standard “sup?”

u/0018andrew 13h ago

Pur company would like to hire you as cat to human and human to cat translator. We can't offer much but you can choose from the following list: cardboard boxes, blankets and a scratching pole. :D

Edit: I mean Our company... okay it stays pur.

u/lalakingmalibog 12h ago

How do I apply to Pur Company? Are there any job openings?

u/Cyrano_Knows 11h ago

I have to warn you. This company doesn't like original thinkers.

They like to do their thinking inside the box.

u/0018andrew 11h ago

We are very flexiable. For example, for orange postions, 1 think/week is enough.

u/0018andrew 11h ago

You have to go in front of our company door, and when we open, just don't come in.

u/notwithagoat 13h ago

Scratch the cardboard box option. The manager needs a new one.

u/Terrible_Toy_Breaker 12h ago

I like blankets.

u/humbugonastick 12h ago

You could add an r

u/AwwwMangos 11h ago

I hope there’s a generous Pur Diem included?

u/yeathatsmebro Tuxedo 11h ago

Yes. Meowxpert here. Cats learnt to meow like this thanks to us, humans. They vocalize like this especially with humans, since most of inter-cat language is through behavior more than it is through vocalization. This meowing and slow blinking tells me that they say they love you.

Tell them you love them back! And pet the king/queen.

u/AppleNo7287 9h ago

Our neighbour's cat moved to us for a couple of years after they got a baby, and he learnt to up nod together with the "sup" meow. Because we greeted him like that, and how he does the same to us, that's adorable.

u/Due-Reflection-1835 13h ago

I love this sub. "Why is my cat doing cat things? Is my cat a cat?"

u/ElectricosSuenos 13h ago

🎯🎯😅😅

Lots of divergents afoot, one of my cats is similarily living a different reality and I try to make it fun.

u/Lurkylurkness 11h ago

And is that a nipple? Is that a cat nipple?

u/StoicSunbro 10h ago

u/ThatOneShotBruh 9h ago

Rat balls and cat nipples are truly the kryptonite of Reddit.

u/rogerworkman623 34m ago

“My cat keeps rubbing her face on my furniture and purring. Should I take him to the vet?”

u/ShakeWeak2666 13h ago

u/JagYouAreNot 13h ago

Stop looking at me.

u/Anthonywithdrum 12h ago

Then why are you still listening.

u/Substantial_Bake_728 11h ago

With your thoughts!

u/Individual_Handle556 13h ago

u/Gho5tWr1ter 13h ago

It’s been ages since I saw Pepe-le-Pew.

u/Maximum_Fly_6628 10h ago

Yeah he's serving 35 to life for 120 counts of sexual assault.

u/Miserable-Try-7471 11h ago

Aww, poor Pe Pe. I loved that cartoon!!

u/Lulapops 10h ago

Me too, he was my favourite Looney Toon :(. Trust me to like the sex pest.

u/doegrey 11h ago

Oops. Maybe I do a version of this at times. I don’t hold them down and they’re free to move at any time but have I turned into Pepe le Pew? 🙈

u/Suicidalsidekick 7h ago

This is stolen from They Can Talk.

u/baconstreet 13h ago

Because it is your leader. And shame on you for not meowing first.

u/SignificantIsopod797 13h ago

Pet the damn cat

u/YourMothersButtox 13h ago

Because he’s baby.

u/ElectricosSuenos 13h ago

She talks to you because she sees you talking. She's trying to join casual sound communication you've modeled in your human-ness.

In studies, they found cats aren't often verbal with each other unless they're PISSED. So NOT casual sound comms, more like I'ma slash you if you dare comms.

Talk back to her, see what she says.

u/SpaceDelay424 10h ago

I love videos of cats with GoPros etc wandering around interacting with each other. Meowing really does seem like something they mostly do with humans. It’s really funny to think they’re just trying to copy us lol

u/ElectricosSuenos 10h ago edited 10h ago

Exactly. So cute. They wanna talk to us 🥰🥰 even tho it's not their first communication choice

u/WTWIV 10h ago

And get our attention too, my girl will look back and give a little meow when I stop petting her like she’s saying “hey, can you keep doing that please?” Lol

u/niko_blanco 2h ago

And it gets even better:

Some researchers suggest that domestic cats have developed meows to resemble the acoustic characteristics of a crying baby, possibly because humans are particularly sensitive to these sounds and are therefore more likely to respond to them.

Manipulative little bastards.

u/MSCOTTGARAND 13h ago

Why do you say a greeting to those you care about?

u/eucldian 13h ago

Requires treats. It is always the answer

u/mad-i-moody 13h ago

“Sup”

u/nvrseriousseriously 13h ago

He’s talking. You talk. Say “hi!….love you!” And carry on from there.

u/RichFoot2073 13h ago

Do you always stare when greeted?

u/PikaBooSquirrel 13h ago

Because she can't speak English

u/Computers_and_cats 13h ago

Clearly loves you.

u/HistoricalSpring891 13h ago

its asking politely for you to pet it

u/shes_a_sleuth 13h ago

Bc he loves you

u/BuckManscape 13h ago

Time for a snack, bald food monkey!

u/Leucurus 12h ago

u/Helpful_Record_9135 13h ago

He’s saying goodmorning!!

u/Thebeardedgoatlady 13h ago

“I love you and I would like you to know it.”

u/itailu 13h ago

It’s called communication

u/ArachnidMuted8408 13h ago

You should be worried if it meowed at you and looked

u/Wizardphizl420 13h ago

She is saying , Whats up? Kind of

u/A3W__ 13h ago

She meows in lowercase

u/dmcloren 13h ago

Awww, she's so pretty. Dilute tortie?

u/Money-Type-176 13h ago

Because you are part of his or her pride. You should do it back or do it before they do it. I do that with my Gary and we go back and forth a few times😹🐈‍⬛😸🐈‍⬛😸

u/Swim-Unlucky 12h ago

Talking to you

u/HoopaDunka 11h ago

It’s the cats friendly way of saying: what the fuck are you looking at?  Give me pets or give me food!

u/phuktup3 10h ago

Slow blinks, your cat trusts you

u/Accomplished_Hour320 8h ago

Calling you a bitch 😂

Edit it’s just a joke

u/Aggravating_Anybody 6h ago

The soft meow paired with the super soft eyes makes me think they are saying “love you!”

u/dragonfliesloveme 13h ago

sounds like cat is greeting you

u/Indy2561 13h ago

Just reminding you of your extraordinary luck of gazing upon his masterpiece 😽

u/Additional-Leg-4680 12h ago

I'd be more concerned if he looked at you and said "hello David"

u/plasticrat 12h ago

That's a pat me please.

u/doegrey 11h ago edited 7h ago

“Hi!” Then “I love you” with that slowblink.

u/Key-Influence-3192 10h ago

“Why aren’t you at work?”

u/strangebru 10h ago

If your cat makes the same meow at you all of the time, that's the name your cat calls you.

u/Stupid-Clumsy-Bitch 7h ago

Just saying hi

u/FewRecognition1788 6h ago

She's just saying "Hey."

You should say hey back. It's polite.

u/rythejdmguy 5h ago

Little guy probably wonders why you look at him and make noise with your mouth too

u/Halldank 2h ago

Why does a cat cat?

u/Howard_Cosine 13h ago

"Dear, Reddit. Why is my cat being a cat and doing totally normal cat things? TIA!"

u/Haunting_Green_1786 13h ago

'cause you are meow-able

u/PlentyCoyote3344 13h ago

Just sayin Howdy! And look how content and relaxed those pretty green Kitty eyes are! ❤️

u/TangeloThick2780 12h ago

Its literally the equivalent to you looking at her and say hi

u/qawsedrf12 12h ago

You better meow back

u/Kusanagi_M89 12h ago

Translation: Sup brah? You good?

u/Status-Vermicelli624 11h ago

hes talking to you bro.

u/Maybel_Hodges 11h ago edited 10h ago

Looks liked my soul kitty who passed. 🥺

u/Dreams-Designer 11h ago

Because it’s awkward to just stare at someone and NOT say “Hi ,” or “what’s up !” 🤷🏻‍♀️😹

u/Miserable-Try-7471 11h ago

Just saying hi.

u/nertaperpalous 10h ago

She wants a kiss.

u/Fletch1375 10h ago

She’s saying hi. Say it back.

u/Riyeko 10h ago

Sup.

u/InquiriusRex 9h ago

She's just asking how your day is going. Don't ignore her, that's rude.

u/mechanical_marten American Shorthair 9h ago

Trying to see what kind of meow gets your attention. You are their safe space judging by those purrs.

u/frogfeen 9h ago

“i love you”

u/thatvillainjay 9h ago

My cat would to come find me, get in my way, look at me and meow, then leave.

u/JackOfAllMemes 8h ago

My cat will yell in the kitchen until I call him. He knows exactly where I am and doesn't have any cognitive problems

u/Glum-Geologist8929 9h ago

That looks like a classic, "What's up?". I'd respond with a head rub & complement.

u/Sea-Breadfruit-2867 8h ago

They love you <3

u/thezombiejedi Tortoiseshell 8h ago

Your kitty looks like my late baby Suede 🥹💕

u/thezombiejedi Tortoiseshell 8h ago

Here he is in his younger years 🙂

u/dystopiam 8h ago

he loves you

u/LePhildo 5h ago

Because he or she loves you. I can hear the purrs. ❤️

u/su1try1obster 5h ago

They’re telling you about their day!!

u/ClimateOutrageous399 13h ago

My cat also sometimes meows at me when i look at him, no idea what it means but its cool

u/Vega10000 13h ago

Your insolence from the other day

u/pixiedei 13h ago

wants pets and attention and loves you

u/shauna_haywood 13h ago

Just saying hi

u/Zealousideal_Ad9652 13h ago

Hes saying massage my foot

u/Jpp9977 13h ago

Awe c'mon, you don't engage in Kitty convos?

u/posco12 13h ago

I read that cats that slowly close their eyes in front of you have complete trust in them. (Also read you can do it to them and they understand its meaning).

The crying is usually wanting attention with petting, face and back rubbing etc. can just be their talk to a human big cat. Mine does it all the time.

u/BerylToby 13h ago

Just yapping. He’s also squinting his eyes at you so it’s a friendly conversation.

u/Lothloris 13h ago

Just asking why you want

u/Reasonable-Tripe-815 12h ago

hey what's up? you want something?

u/pedrojdm2021 12h ago

She likes your presence.

u/Bottled_Void 12h ago

Anything else would be suspicious.

u/Unique-Chain5626 12h ago

Wazzaaaaap

u/UnusualClient2099 12h ago

How dare you question it!

u/Haunting-Molasses-56 12h ago

A love call… call back

u/TheFriendYouGet 12h ago

He/she has opinions!

u/ebf255 12h ago

Because they look at you and think “meow”

u/UnholyShroud696 12h ago

Because love.

u/jillshiva 12h ago

she will blow up in 25 minutes </3

u/UnderstandingBig9090 12h ago

Think of it as a "hi, whatcha doing????"

u/AeonsSeen 11h ago

Just acknowledging your existence, like "sup".

u/count-brass 11h ago

I look at my cat and say “Cat,” or one of the other half dozen names. I think it’s about the same thing back.

u/BrokenHope23 11h ago

looks like a simple "hi you, what's going on?"

Cats can't speak like humans, but they try. Most of a cat's communication is nonverbal; ear movements, posture, blinking/slow blinking, etc. that other animals can pick up on but we don't really fully understand yet. We've made some headway like how slow blinking means love and how some ear movements can tell us pleased/displeased but there are still exceptions as each cat communicates differently.

I'd say your cat is interested in engaging and open to having an adventure with you. Whether playing around the house, petting, going for a walk with a harness outside, etc. who knows what your guy's routine is but they seem open to you

u/ChenLung 11h ago

"sup"

u/Aquafoot 11h ago

The small furry one has opinions. They must be shared.

u/AgressiveSocks 11h ago

She’s like, “what up fools? You need something?”

u/Electrical_Ad4115 11h ago

I truly hope that you reciprocate with the slow blink and meow back

u/iehdbx 11h ago

Talk with her!! Have a chat sesh!

u/Sad_Run5667 11h ago

Aww sweet girl! She’s sayin, “Hey. What’s up?”

u/rollingSleepyPanda 11h ago

Hi, mommy!

u/bananaisnthere 11h ago

What is the cat supposed to do

u/MrWoodTang 10h ago

Just making chats

u/davidc538 10h ago

Meow back

u/zorgimusprime 10h ago

Hes saying "whats up"

u/Sunkern_ing 9h ago

We had a cat that never meowed normally but would meow if you made eye contact/talk to her directly. She was an angel.

u/InsaneJane42 9h ago

Either saying hi or asking for pets. I have cats that do both

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 9h ago

They have opinions 🤷‍♂️

u/boomboy8511 8h ago

I read somewhere that cats started meowing after domestication to get their humans attention and that a cats meow is meant only for humans.

I know it's not true but it's a nice thought and after reading it I respond to any meow I hear in my home lol.

u/chastity_doll 8h ago

Meow. Meow meow meow.

u/Shieldlegacyknight 4h ago

When people just stare at me without saying anything I say what. Same concept.

u/Sufficient_Topic1589 4h ago

My boy does that. He’s like oh hey bro. High pitched meows and short like that mean they like you

u/cyankitten 3h ago

Her blink means I love you!

u/Weary-Feedback-3387 2h ago

It's telling you to go f### off

u/cclancaster13 2h ago

Y'all really be coming onto this sub all the time asking: "Why does my cat, cat?"

u/AuraMaster7 2h ago

Because it is a cat.

u/Psianth 11h ago

Fun fact; adult cats don’t typically meow at other cats, only at humans. It’s specifically for humans, as a greeting, or to draw your attention to something. If they’re doing it and not also walking you over to something that needs a human’s attention, it’s just a hello.

u/montycantsin777 5h ago

probs detests you

u/DontTreadOnTrees 4h ago

Because you looked at her

u/PocketFullOfRondos 3h ago

Saying hey.

u/lemeneurdeloups 46m ago

“Hey good lookin’

Whatcha got cookin’ … for dinner?

By the way, WHEN IS IT BEING SERVED?”

u/rogerworkman623 35m ago

“Hey”

u/T3hSpoon 14m ago

Kitty wants scratches. Please comply.

u/NachosOnMars 13h ago

Would you prefer if she/he barks at you instead?

u/TheRealJFranco 13h ago

Not as clever as you thought.

→ More replies (1)

u/borderlander_ 13h ago

You woke me up. Now help me back to sleep
