I’m Hungarian and one thing that’s interesting about the Hungarian Diaspora in the United States is how people cling to their regionalism and assume that Hungary is the same Hungary that their great grand parents left a long time ago. I’ve heard people from other European countries say the same thing about their diaspora. Is this a similar case in the United States for Latinos? I noticed that the Latino communities are very different depending on what part of the United States. Whether they are a Mexican from Texas a Puerto Rican from Pennsylvania a Guatemalan from New York a Cuban from Florida Venezuelan from Salt Lake city a Peruvian from New Jersey Brazilian from Massachusetts or a Paraguayan from Minnesota.

In Costa Rica we call them muertos hahaha 😂

I haven't found an answer that actually makes sense

Like in the US we have like “the Karen” (who is a mean often somewhat prosperous suburban lady), or like the metalhead (I am pretty sure metalheads are universal at this point), the suburban home depot dad (he wears cargo shorts and is obsessed with barbecue and his lawn), or like the sort of vaguely artsy new age crystal lady who wears like… purple shawls. They’re sort of stock characters, but also will tend to resemble many actual people you might meet. I’m less interested in mean spirited ones and more in like “oh yeah that type of guy!” Where it’s mostly affectionate and sometimes people use it as a self description

I want to know if this is a general feeling in the region or just something that is being perceived here: This week I came across a post from a chilenian talking about a supposed conflict with us about the strait of Magallanes. This surprised me because I had seen no mention of this anywhere, not in the news, not in social media, yet when I did some digging it seemed to be something huge that was being replicated by media outlets there as a big problem.

This reminded me a few weeks ago when scrolling I casually encountered a video about the massive manifestations happening in Bolivia, with people saying nobody was even interviewing them anymore. This was even more shocking because I remember clearly how in 2019 every media was following the story and informing.

It feels as if every country was being told a different version of the same story, then kept in a bubble without clear communication with the others and left to stew. It feels so incredibly bizarre and dystopic, especially on the era of the internet and social media.

I have talked to several girls from other countries (Mexican, Dominican, Venezuelan) who say that Americans wih Latino roots are very dry. They don't say "my love", "baby" or other words of affection. It may be a very individual situation or a generalization. Either I wanted to ask you to hear from what those who have experience interacting or even dating Americans say.

I always thought it was a chupete but then I heard that it could be call a chupón in some places/countries. Now I’m confused lol

I've been to the same psych ward twice in Montevideo, the first for two weeks and the other one for a month.

The place had rooms for two people, there was a sort of patio (don't know how to say this in english) where everyone would spend the day.

The activities to do were few, you could play cards, dominos or ask the staff for stuff to exercise with.

Meals were pretty shitty except when a person would be on their last day, where we would eat lasagna.

I've only seen violence once, where a partner tried to escape jumping a fence and the staff had to tackle him down and inject some sort of tranquilizer.

The last time was a few months ago and now I'm stable, hope I never have to go back there or any other psychiatric institution.

Some piece of decoration, a particular way to store or arrange things, the use of some colors... it doesn't have to be an especific object.

When you talk to Mexicans about the lands they lost to the USA you can have a productive or interesting conversation without anger or resentment. Despite these lands being the economic backbone of the usa and filled with abundant resources. For example California and Texas have the largest state economies in the USA and territories from the Mexican cessation account for more than 40% of the USA GDP.

I have never seen a Mexican politician try to use Mexico’s lost lands to distract Mexicans from bad economic issues or political scandals the way i’ve seen other Latin Americans politicians do. I’ve never seen Mexicans of the Mexican government express revanchism or irredentism or politicize lost lands like several other Latin American countries for example Argie with the Malvinas/Falklands, Bolivia with their pacific coastline that Chile took, enezuela with Esequibo, and Guatamala claiming half of Belize, Peru with Tarapaca, and sometimes Paraguay with Matto Grosso and some parts of Argentina.

Edit: I’m not trying to be disrespectful. I’m just explaining a phenomenon that exists. We Europeans are guilty of this too.

Hey all

I've been travelling to a number of countries in the world, and one continent that I've always wanted to visit is South America. It's an amazing and beautiful continent. However, I've read that many have high crime rate. If you can't speak spanish and you're not careful, it's easy to get into scary situations.

I do eventually want to visit more South American countries but what would be the best one for someone coming for the first time? I guess one handicap of mine is that I can't speak spanish other than some simple phrases. Would be grateful for any information and advice

LATAM hasn't had any monarchies or monarchic led colonies/territories since the 19th century with the Brazilian Empire, Spanish Cuba and Puerto Rico and the Second Mexican Empire.

And now monarchies have been completely removed from the region (unless you consider Belize part of LATAM) so why was this the case? Why does everyone right now reject monarchy in the region?

From what I know they share/consume culture from the Rio de La Plata region and Uruguai and ARG are super LGBT friendly.

In the USA, flock cameras are hated due to the AI vehicle tracking of everyday citizens, thus causing a concern in privacy.

I’m curious to see how Latin Americans feel about this

I particularly don't agree to call Europeans “Latinos”.

Is that being Latin is much more about "languages derived from Latin" and yes it has become a culture..

I used to have couple of Latin contacts I have met them in dating or friendship app. I lost all the contacts bcs of some mobile corrupt those friends are super super cool. Both men and women of different ages I like to meet more latins.

My question is in the title but for more context, my partner (Enby) and I (TransMasc) want to move somewhere in Latin America but neither one of us knows where we could move and we are very obviously not cis or straight.

Any information we find is geared towards tourists, not folks looking to stay.

My partner is in the Jewelry making/Metal working career and I'm in the medical field so neither of us will have trouble finding work.

What countries are actually safe to live long term when one is LGBTQ+?

So I have a coworker that lived in a Latam country for 3 years and he said in his view that people were on average much happier than they were in the US and that they enjoyed their lives more.

So it got me thinking that there probably is a better work/life/social balance in other places.

Anyway, I’d personally say that in the US the general feeling among young people is very much a sense of “yeah we’re absolutely f^cked and life sucks”

There’s the impression among everyone that things used to be better in the past and nobody I’ve ever talked to has ever expressed the opinion that things are actually improving.

So I’m just wondering if there’s also the general feeling in Latam of “yeah we’re absolutely f^cked and everything’s getting worse”

Or if people feel satisfied with the direction of things and there’s the impression that things are improving and getting better.

Spanish is ok for basic stuff (directions, ordering, buying stuff, greetings, etc) but looking forward to practicing by immersion. But can’t ask this question fluently in Spanish. I have been to a few nearby Latin American paises before.

I plan to do a mix of the beach, city, volcanos/mountains, and something else.
Looking for a good loop around the country. Arriving around 8pm and leaving around the same time so would appreciate suggestions on how to best utilize the time.

I found them very similar, because the left wing from those two are conservative compared to anywhere else in the world and Latin America itself.

I learned this phrase from a Cuban who sort of implied it as a specifically Cuban phrase, but from further reading it seems to be far more common. Is it used in your countries?
