miscellaneous [loved trope] The original character is much stronger than the violent parody
Superman and Homelander (Dc comics and The boys) even in the comics the best Homelander can do is throw a jet with one hand. meanwhile Superman can lift infinite weight and fly out of black holes.
Barney and Buddy (Buddy the unicorn and Barney the dinosaur) basically buddy is a demonic entirety that exists inside his TV and preys on people to brain wash them and make them part of his show, he can die by getting stabbed or burned. Barney can create stars and has literal imagination as his power.
•
u/TheMattInTheBox 18h ago
We powerscaling Barney now
•
u/PJ-The-Awesome 18h ago
In my experience, people in power-scaling tend to depict characters from media meant for very young audiences as essentially gods.
Examples include Word Girl from the series of the same name and Sportacus from Lazy Town.
•
u/cam312 18h ago
Okay but Word Girl almost having her own Invincible Train Scene and Sportacus lifting a pyramid is valid
•
u/Recompense40 17h ago
Yeah, it's not so much that 'if kid cartoon then = godlike', like, nobody's saying Arthur from Arthur is out there throwing hands with Goku (Unless Goku got roped into teaching a karate class or something that could be a fun crossover)
But in a kid's show they'll do something like have a mime throw a lasso around the moon to pull it closer to earth, and that shit is like catnip to powerscalers.
•
•
u/TheDreamIsEternal 11h ago
Also, the more cartoony, the more batshit crazy they can be thanks to the power of gags. Like how Arale can easily defeat Super Saiyan God Blue Vegeta and crack the planet in two with a single punch just because it's funny.
•
u/Recompense40 11h ago
One Punch Man, the beloved son of powerscaling, gets most of his power from Toonforce.
The joke is that he shouldn't be that strong but he is. You see, he did 100 pushups every day. That's a lot of pushups. He was very disciplined.
That's why he can split the sky with a punch.
•
u/TheDreamIsEternal 10h ago
To this day I still can't believe that people try to powerscale Saitama. Any "Who would win" debate that involves him automatically must have him as the winner, because that's the joke, he wins every fight with one punch.
→ More replies (1)•
u/Recompense40 10h ago
YES!
"But that's the joke" I say as I hear someone say it's stupid for Saitama to punch out some 5-dimensional horror worked up in the depths of the SCP wiki.
•
u/Lemonbubblepie 10h ago
Obv not all kids show character are broken …but word girl is legit fighter in her own right
•

u/star75legacy 18h ago
Bro Sportacus built a pyramid just to eat an apple, he was crazy.
•
u/Far-Profit-47 17h ago
Correction
He LIFTED the pyramid and threw the apple to the moon, different things

u/johnchurchill 15h ago
Is there a vid you can link showing this? Not that I need proof but I'd like to see it.
•
u/Far-Profit-47 15h ago
Couldn’t find it by itself so here’s a video that shows them with some calcs on top
•
u/Green-eyed-Psycho77 16h ago
Because characters with that kinda audience aren’t bound by thing like logic. Your 3 year old doesn’t care how Barney works, they’re just mystified by the big Dino doing whatever.
•
•
u/Thumb_Wrasslin 16h ago
Partially because they aren't bound by logic, only whatever mystifies a child and brings them joy, thus getting them some wild feats.
But I personally suspect it's also because people don't like imagining such characters losing, especially not against the more violent and evil characters they get put against in either spite matchups or the rare serious ones.
•
u/sock-bucket 15h ago edited 14h ago
It's also just because it's funny, at least for me. Taking obvious gags at face value and as serious as possible, imagining them less like a joke and what if they really happened. The only power scaler that actually matters is the writer, and OBVIOUSLY if SpongeBob and Goku fought officially SpongeBob would get reduced to atoms. But it's funny to see an episode of spongebob where he tilts the entire universe as a gag and compare him to Goku shaking the universe with a punch lol.
Kinda funny to take it at face value and a feat that took an entire lifetime of experience and power getting reduced to an in universe gag that takes zero effort from a fucking sea sponge lol
•
u/Thumb_Wrasslin 14h ago
Also very true. Just look at Death Battle's SpongeBob vs Aquaman. SpongeBob held the fastest calculated speed feat for a long while in a show where they discuss the flash. It's hilarious.
•
u/sock-bucket 14h ago
Yeaaaah like, it's kindve an inside joke with the gag power scaling, at least for the most part. Sure, some people truly get serious about it but at least for the majority it's kinda just a meme to take it seriously and have these debates.
I'm a meme power scaler sometimes but like, at the end of the day it's just for goofs and friendly discussion. No, I don't actually care if bugs bunny is the most powerful thing in the universe apparently. Toon force is like a power scaling meme and essentially means nothing. But it's just the fact that you CAN scale these characters to absurd lengths is what makes it kinda fun.
•
u/GammaFan 17h ago
I mean, have you seen Sportacus do pushups? He’s pretty impressive to do all this for real
•
u/Fenrir_Carbon 14h ago
It's basically a routine he did when he was younger in competitions, he can do it all the way through and he's something like 50 when he filmed Lazytown.
I know people with that level of cardio and strength but not flexibility too, and to be doing it at that age is crazy
→ More replies (2)•
u/Gene-Shaughts 17h ago
Honestly never heard of those. My association with the trope is Shaggy being basically a stand-in for Goku power-wise and Garfield being an eldritch horror.
•
u/BufferUnderpants 16h ago
It comes from extrapolating from the fact that a toon can walk off a piano falling on them from 10 stories high, or shrug off a bundle of dynamite stick going off right next to them. Or even crazier, actually get turned to dust and reconstitute themselves immediately after.
If you take them out of their setting where those are visual gags, it means they're actually indestructible.
•
u/Gene-Shaughts 15h ago
Oh yeah, ToonForce is well established, I know. It’s what folks ascribe metafiction to is pretty random.
•

•
u/Lost_house_keys 16h ago
Barney vs Kirby. Make it happen powerscalers.
•

Kirby is friendship and Barney is imagination
Is basically two positive energies clashing and feeding into one another

Also applied to the comic “defenders of earth” in which Godzilla faces Zilla again but this time Zilla holds his own with hit and run tactics. With the end of the story having Zilla becoming more respected despite Godzilla still being stronger in every way.
•
u/stumpychubbins 17h ago
Doesn’t the guy who released Zilla say something afterwards to the effect of "he’s useless!"
•
u/Narrow-Incident8480 16h ago
•
u/Cavaquillo 15h ago
It’s a decent monster movie but fails to carry the spirit of what actually makes a Godzilla movie in the first place.
•
u/ItsNotKevinDurant35 14h ago
it's (unintentionally?) a pretty good remake of Beast From 20,000 Fathoms ironically, down to certain shots being incredibly similar which makes it more of a sibling to Godzilla than anything
•
u/DidHeJustGoThere 14h ago
It's a mixed bag. If the title had only been different, it would be a decent kaiju film, but utterly forgettable. However by attempting to call it Godzilla, Zilla obtained a notoriety that persisted and spun off into his own, much more memorable kaiju.

u/FishWithLegsAndArms 15h ago
If you haven't seen a Godzilla movie before, it's fine. But the problem is it's not Godzilla.
•
u/ctomkat 12h ago
Is this the 2000 American Godzilla movie with Mathew Broderick?
•
u/Elmoulmo 11h ago
Yes, Zilla is the fan name for that particular Godzilla movie version of Godzilla.
•
u/Cavaquillo 15h ago
Hell yeah fuck Zilla. Only redeeming quality of that movie is the cartoon sequel series.

Honestly most complains about injustice’s changes to the characters are kinda addressed in the very story with the originals constantly criticizing and beating the clearly broken or messed up elseworld variants that should in no way be better than them
Baffling how the takeaway from many was evil superman when it ends with normal Superman defeating him
•
u/AlertWar2945-2 17h ago
I like Superman beating characters like Ultraman, since the explanation they give is since Ultraman would just immediately kill his enemies he ended up being a lot less experienced at fighting.
Superman keeping his villains around allowed them to grow and continually challenge him throughout the years, as well as having trusted colleagues he could train with.
•
u/Far-Profit-47 17h ago
Also correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Injustice supe also very unhealthy due to the stress and dictator work? If I’m not wrong he even has eyebags
•
u/AlertWar2945-2 17h ago
I believe so but its also been awhile since I played the game or looked at the comics. He definitely wasn't in the best mental headspace, especially towards the end of the Injustice game.
•
u/A-Sadistick-Stick 17h ago
Really hate how in the movie adaptation they had injustice Superman overpower his Earth 1 counterpart.
•
u/greencrusader13 17h ago
That movie was so bad in so many ways.
•
u/Inevitable-Charge76 16h ago
The most I can say about that movie is that they got Steven Universe’s voice actor to voice Damian Wayne.
•
•
•
u/4LeggedGod 10h ago
The fact that they took years of comics and condensed it into such a short movie would have gasted my flabber but these are also the brainiacs that canceled Young Justice twice.
•
u/TheDreamIsEternal 11h ago
Absolute fucking bullshit how Flash was killed. The fastest man alive and yet couldn't dodge a saw?
•
u/thepineapple2397 2h ago
Injustice would be a great way to end the Snyderverse, but only if it's Cavill and Corenswet; and it would also introduce multiverse shenanigans to Gunns DCU too early so maybe not yet
•
u/Putrid-Fun-6431 17h ago
Funny little tidbit about Homelander: His Comic Version is actually WEAKER than the TV Version
His two best feats in the comics where chucking that jet, and screaming so loud ears popped. The nuke thing? Never shown. Speed? Just comparisons
You remember how him and Maeve absolutely screwed the plane rescue? Well in the comics, the Whole Seven got on it, fucked it up even worse, and then one of them died
•
u/Valuable_Victory_271 14h ago
I mean he does take Maeves sword to the head with no damage and then punches her head clean off
He is also more aloof in the comics and not as frenetic as in the show but Anthony Starr does a great job
•
u/Putrid-Fun-6431 11h ago
That is true, however (To my knowledge) Maeve (Comic) has fuck all in the ways of relevant feats, but thank you for pointing it out
•
u/Valuable_Victory_271 11h ago edited 11h ago
Yeah a big part of that scene was that her sword, which i think was real (someone else said it was a prop) and she is still a supe, still didnt matter against Homelander and her trying to attack him was a futile effort.
I guess we dont actually see Homelanders death in the comics but enough other supes just got gunned down so a minigun probably would have taken him down too
•
u/GrungeGorrilla 11h ago
The next panel points out that it's a prop sword so that's not even a feat
•
•
u/BigJimBeef 15h ago
The comics scene that stands out is when he takes his clothes off to murderize that room full of SWAT guys.

u/Thestohrohyah 17h ago

u/TruthEnvironmental24 16h ago
They parodied… a parody? It feels like so many writers are just stuck in an infinite loop of parodying Superman and his parodies.
•
•
u/Rabdomtroll69 15h ago
He's not even a parody hes just a reference and background easter egg. Literally zero information about him besides the name
•
u/Thestohrohyah 16h ago
I mean. At the end of the day a parody can still turn into an interesting and memorable take on the base formula, meaning that it will inspire people in its own way. I can't think of any others but I'm sure other parodies also gained such a big life away from what they were parodising that they became their own phenomenon.

A chapter of the kkk made a parody of Mr. Rodgers in the form of a audio tape played over the phone. He took them to court sueing them and shutting it down. He also sued ice cube a few years later for sampling the theme to his show in one of ice cubes songs.

•

I can respect that, I just wish parents would learn stuff about the movies they take their kids to see. Hearing about toddlers being exposed to that kind of stuff really took the wind out of my sails
•
u/Gnoll_level_antics 10h ago
I agree. It's entirely the parents' fault though. There's not a single version of the cinema presentation art that isn't creepy in some way, and without the big R rating symbol on it. They saw a mascot, and decided it was for kids, even if it was artistically obscured by TV static indicated that maybe it's not what it seems.
I don't know, man, as someone who has worked in many customer service positions, I've come to learn that every single mother fucker than walks through the door has a room temperature IQ. They would drink dish soap if there wasn't a label telling them not to.
•
u/CommercialEstate4422 6h ago
I always think of customers as having negative IQ. Unless someone can do something vaguely intelligent, like knowing their orders or cleaning up their own FUCKING mess, then theyre all the product of 22 generations of inbreeding.

Batman and Azrael/Az-Bats.
Azrael was basically created to be a violent parody of Batman to prove the point to the readers that a violent Batman isn't what they actually want.
Bruce comes back from having his back broken, humiliates Jean-Paul Valley, and takes the cowl back in the end. Because Jean-Paul was a shitty Batman.
•
u/notheretoargu3 13h ago
And he didn’t even fight him to do it, because Bruce knew that fighting Jean-Paul would strengthen his resolve and delusions. He literally just crawled through a space too tight for the Azrael-Batman to fit through. He kept the helm on, then Bruce struck a loose board, unleashing sunlight onto the night vision Jean-Paul had activated, forcing him to remove it. They talked it out and Bruce resumed the mantle.
•
u/UnoriginalTitleNo998 10h ago
Huh. I always assumed Azrael was because DC wanted things to be more dark and edgy. Side note but I think it's WILD that he's canonically half gorilla
•
u/Neveronlyadream 10h ago
If I recall, they've talked about it and it was partially a stunt like the Death of Superman arc and partially because of the Image stuff and readers complaining that Batman with his no kill rule and not using guns was lame and not 90s and extreme.
So they created Azrael to fill that role with his badass armor and pouches and then immediately had him go off the rails to show what a giant asshole he was and to prove the point that no one should want an extreme 90s Batman.
I can't find it anymore, but there was an interview with Denny O'Neil talking about how it was an intentional deconstruction of the idea.

•
u/NothingWaste7654 18h ago
Stab him in the brain. And that he could handle the Hulk
•
u/Shed_Some_Skin 18h ago
Lobo has survived that and worse. He can canonically regenerate from a drop of blood (and every drop of blood used to make a new Lobo until he got nerfed) and got banned from the afterlife for being a pain in the ass
•
•
u/notheretoargu3 13h ago
Surviving wasn’t a factor. The way the rules worked during that (and the other fights), incapacitating the opponent, even for a moment, was enough to declare victory. Stabbing Lobo in the head and knocking him out would count.

u/Dark_Stalker28 18h ago edited 13h ago
Nier- The Shadow Lord is the much stronger original compared to the protagonist, who's a clone who accidentally became a person, the shadowlord being the hope for humanity and even shutting down the protag'ss magic in the final fight, he mostly loses giving up hope of saving his sister.
While the protagonist pretty much exterminates humanity and a large portion of the game is him dehumanizing them with typical protagonist tropes turned on its head.

•
•
u/QuyanRonnie 14h ago
… for clarity, who are you saying ‘was’ “the hope for humanity”? From the phrasing, it sounds like this is an inversion of the post trope.
•
u/Dark_Stalker28 13h ago edited 13h ago
Being the best hope, refers to the shadowlord, vs the protagonist his violent clone.
Humans literally live off him. Human transferred to shadow bodies (hence the shadowlord title) to escape a disease from another world's evil god. They had clones to go back to after waiting it out, the clones accidentally became sentient and the project was sabotaged anyway, he however was a perfect subject and can help other stay sane. If the human dies or loses themselves the clone dies too so it was a lose lose situation for them. Some have merged back by the game but not enough to sustain humanity, so in Nier Automata the protag is remembered as the destroyer.

Beyond Sonic.exe, a good 9/10 creepypasta characters based on pre-existing series. The most recent one that made rounds was 'Chimera' from a pokemon creepypasta, Hypno's Lullaby (reboot): A Hex Maniac infected with a parasite who took advantage of a trainer lacking her pokemon, and infecting her too. Most meme'd on how the situation would be dramatically different even if she just had a level 5 starter. Even a starter, stage 1, or similar could deal with the Hex Maniac easily. Let alone the insect she infects with (having 150 in speed, but only 10 in every other stat iirc). Really sucks they allegedly started harassing the creator afterwards. They were in on the joke of how badly Chimera would get no-diff'd in more typical circumstances and never denied it. Was a shame.
