Just because it originated in AAVE doesn't mean that its proliferation now isn't because of the self censoring of TikTok and YouTube creators. Which explains why people are "mispronouncing" it because they've never heard it from AAVE speaker.

Made you laugh that hard eh? That’s depressing. Yes. It’s both. Pronouncing it that way is AAVE. The uptick in seeing it is thanks to TikTok and how they censor. It’s not the only word that got the TikTok treatment.

This is why it became insanely popular in the past 4 ish years through TikTok’s explosion. Always been around. Grew because of TikTok.
