அரசியல் / Political To all those saying Kamal Hassan didn't say anything wrong

When a sanghi says Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages don't you get pissed? Appo avangallukkum apdi daane irukum?

There's no conclusive proof that Kannada came out of Tamil. At best what we can say is they both came out of a common ancestor but Tamil retains more of the ancestral language. That doesn't in any way mean Kannada came out of Tamil!

He was just like those North Indian chauvinist who think everything came out of Sanskrit's ass. Don't become the chauvinists you're resisting :)

This kind of language argument is similar to two groups of monkeys fighting over which banana is tastier.

All the bananas taste the same. You just eat the one that grows in your locality.

u/PossibilityWarm23 Jun 03 '25

What a beautiful analogy!

u/sportyankz Jun 03 '25

This! Sooner they stop fighting with another, united they will be! Only uneducated morons care about mine and yours.

Unless they force us to eat the Banana. Either to or not to eat is an individual decision.

u/sportyankz Jun 04 '25

Stop trying to put woke bs to this too now.

u/Creative-Paper1007 Jun 03 '25

Some bananas like Chinese or japanese are so fked you have try real hard to eat them if you are not a native

u/AmphibianMiserable81 Jun 03 '25

Lol, yeah, kinda acquired taste

u/ramksr Jun 03 '25

Metaphoric bananas always taste the same. Hence, the point that there is no point in arguing which one.

South Indian Mangoes are the sweetest. (now let's fight on that one)

It's amazing to see how fast we digress from the topic and devolve into foolish brawls.

Not on you oliver, I'm just stating a generic observation among all of us.

tamilians are made believe on trivial things to fight and all, this is a true method fought and succeeded in kerala to undermine majority believers; in Kerala it was communism for a starter.

but basically they wants to split based on caste and the big winner here is church;

i’m not tamil, but i can underline the winner would be the church and church only.

u/kuttydinosaur Jun 03 '25

There's no religious angle to this. Don't bring in one and reveal your agenda!

u/krizvipin Jun 04 '25 edited Jun 04 '25

as mentioned there is no reason behind diverting relatively tolerant population on to the brink of chaos on the basis of religion and caste along with terms like , north south divide, cutting south, hindi imposition, hindu hate???

can you tell me who stands to win??? who won in Kerala though the table has been changed, that some other religion is converting their girls ??

English Came from German, all English knows this and they don't give two fucks about it. If Kannada came from Tamil, who gives a fuck? Or Tamil came from Korean, who gives a fuck.

Finally some much needed sanity in Tamizh subs...

If A coming into B's House and A telling B is A's kid, it's already OFFENSIVE.

Given, A has always publicly abhored B's real Parent C, Now A Coming into B's House & saying C is not your Parent da' & We A are You B's real Parent da... it's BRUTALLY OFFENSIVE and adding salt to the earlier wound.

KH essentially did the later.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

See the number of downvotes to this post, before you draw a conclusion about sanity or rationality. Haha!

u/Proud_Bandicoot5235 Coimbatore - கோயம்புத்தூர் Jun 03 '25

Crowd is NOT always right, neither in the EVMs nor even if/when I'm UPvoted.

lol

u/Doc_Occc Jun 04 '25

What is C here?

u/Elegant_Working8215 Jun 04 '25

I’m completely confused 😵‍💫. Could we use the actual language names instead? It’s hard to keep track while juggling three different placeholders.

u/SwordfishLive5561 Jun 04 '25

Umm, not relevant. But, neither C nor A are the real parents of B. Tamil and Kannada evolved from the same ancestors. Which makes A and B siblings?🥸

u/Proud_Bandicoot5235 Coimbatore - கோயம்புத்தூர் Jun 04 '25

But B strongly believes C is their ancestry, just like how A is militantly adamant that it has no lineage to C.

There's a merit in the former, while the later is sheer naivete borne out of a superlative hate to it's own roots.

u/SwordfishLive5561 Jun 04 '25

To its own root? Care to explain more that?

u/bustingbuster1 Jun 03 '25

When a sanghi says all languages are born from sanskrit.. we don't go out in the streets and protest or make a ruckus. We (or maybe just I) sense some ignorance, and when there's no conclusive proof, chalk it up as one man's opinion. Which is a protected right by our constitution.

u/CowEntire5174 Jun 06 '25

As a Kannadiga, I agree. If some Tamil minister had said those words, protests would have been justifiable. Kamal Hassan though, for all his achievements, is just a film star and his words don't mean much.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25 edited Jun 03 '25

Guys he’s just an actor trying to create controversy to promote the movie.

I don’t think the actual people care. It’s just people trying to escalate an issue to promote themselves.

KH is trying to promote his movie.

The people from KN are trying make this issue so they can leverage it for more power.

OP is trying to get karma and engagement.

And everyone will forget about it in a week.

u/captainmilitia Jun 06 '25

Given the reviews of the movie, It sure is a controversy to promote the movie.

u/captainmilitia Jun 06 '25

whataboutism just puts us in the same scale as those who are saying hindi is our national language.

u/kasarediff Jun 03 '25

The people who are debating are missing the point.
The carelessness of many recent North Indian immigrants into Bangalore and their insensitivity to local culture is the real cause of the backlash.
What Kamal Hassan is creating is this image that Tamils are also equally insensitive (not true). This is about optics. Apologizing and supporting Kannada could have won him more support across South. He missed the point.
He’s busy trying to be right. Even if right, he’ll create further resentment and Tamil insensitivity next.

u/witty_dessert_eater Jun 06 '25

This.. Rn we are actually seeing tamils and hindis as the same except tamils wanna push away hindis too that's it.. Even after kaveri protests idt people were that divided but the fact that tamils are saying kannadigas to understand KH was right is creating even ruckus..

u/Elegant_Working8215 Jun 04 '25

“Even if right”? The issue is—he’s not right in the first place. Personally, I don’t even think an apology is necessary. What he should do is issue a simple clarification, like most politicians do when they’ve misspoken. Something along the lines of “we’re all born of the same mother” would have been enough to calm things down. But instead, with one reckless and unnecessary statement, he’s jeopardized the unity that existed—especially between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu—against the imposition of Hindi. And this goes beyond just language. It weakens the much larger fight against delimitation, which, if unchecked, will severely cripple South India’s political bargaining power. It was an irresponsible move with serious consequences.

u/More_Letterhead1442 Jun 03 '25

Let me give you my perspective. Whatever kamal said if you look at it in isolation, factually it's debatable... If you look at it contextually, he was only endearing to shivanna, almost saying we are brothers.

This was a passing statement made in an event. People with an ounce of common sense or sanity will ignore it, cos it's not worth anyones time. Kamal besides being popular weilds no power holds no office... When the honorable home minister made a similar statement regarding kannada and other Indian languages were born out of sanskrit i didn't see this kind of outrage.

But as 3rd generation tamil living in bangalore, let me tell you something , there is a small pocket of kannadigas who simply can't stand us, they always wait for something to be upset about . Even if kamal had said kannada and tamil are brothers they would have outraged over who is the elder brother.
And look at all the political outfits getting involved in this, there is a larger agenda at play. They don't want to see South indians be United. They know there's a historical animosity between us, and making full use of it to blow things out of proportion.

u/kuttydinosaur Jun 03 '25

KH doubled down and said "won't apologize if I'm right" like he holds a PhD in linguistics, while even actual linguistics and dravidiologists either don't think Kannada was born out of Tamil or are at best divided on the issue. He had a chance to back down. He chose not to. Let's not give him the benefit of "taken out of context".

u/More_Letterhead1442 Jun 03 '25

Of course he won't apologize, when people deliberately take things out of context and misinterpret with sole purpose of bullying and play politics at his expense.. I always thought he is going to apologize, so glad he didn't give in to these bullies...

Now he has decided not to release in karnataka as they wanted... So it shd die down.... Watch this is going to get bigger... It was never about love for language... These fringe groups wanted mileage by bullying... But this has only up the ante..

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

things out of context and misinterpret

Please, stop playing this out of context and misinterpret games. It's not that only you understand tamil and nobody else.

u/no_frills_yo Jun 03 '25

Let's ask KH, his views on which came first - chicken or egg?

The fact that the media and audience is taking a non expert's views on a topic they're not qualified to answer shows our low IQ society.

For the sake of argument, let's say kannada originated from Tamil. Why does it matter? Why do people take pride in things they had no part in ?

Do we go around boasting, my granddad is older than your granddad ? Who cares, they're both old.

u/NoTeaHere Jun 03 '25

Naatla evlo Prachana iruku. Idhu oru prachanai ah?! What does it matter which language originated from where. In Rome, you be a Roman. Simple. If you move to a different city or country - you have to speak that language and adapt to that culture. How does it matter what language originated from where? Illa namba enna time travel machine eh vechutu poi Indha origin point ah edachum panna porom ah!

Don’t give him importance. Any publicity is publicity - he is trying to be in the limelight to promote his movie.

u/Nefola Jun 03 '25

If someone said english is the mother of all indian languages, would you be angry? You'd just be confused, befuddled, laugh, sigh and move on.

Because you know it's retardation speaking.

People just saw an opportunity to bitch and moan, no use preaching logic to people who just want to set the world on fire.

u/flaneurthistoo Jun 03 '25

And the rest of the world sits by watching the show wondering when India will stop its stupid language flex wars? Yawn 🥱

u/bssgopi Jun 03 '25

Athellam sari...

All I understand is that he wanted to share that he loves Kannada people because we are similar. He just exaggerated it to the extent that brought some kind of hierarchy into this discussion that offended them.

How would you now encourage brotherhood with the Kannada people without offending them?

u/Jazzlike_Math_970 Jun 04 '25

By not being the wannabe supreme Dravidian. We all are sister languages who evolved from the Proto Dravidian language. Of course we know that tamil was born before kannada but that doesn't mean kannada is derived out of tamil. If you are factually right there is no need to worry about anything. This whole logic what KH used was that we all should be united but we will be the dominant language. And the love KH expressed to Shivanna was on the pretext of this kannada's derivation from tamil.

u/Low_Fix1000 Jun 05 '25

If he wanted only Love then he could have said " Tamil is born from Kannada"...why the opposite?

u/Kind_Development2580 Jun 04 '25

That statement whether fact or not wasn't required. It is a sensitive time with a lot happening with the language issue in karnataka. Kamal needs to differentiate between a political rally and a movie promotion.

u/Kiruku_puluthi Jun 03 '25 edited Jun 03 '25

Unoda analogy eruma saani vida kevalama iruku...

That common ancestry is also tamil, current Tamil isn't the only thing to compare with .

He is dealing with the high court itself. Even court couldn't counter his statement , it just annoyed for stirring the sentiments.

Just like classical chinese ,traditional chinese, present day chinese , there are certain version of tamil.

Just coz the terms doesn't sound like today tamil for you, you don't have dictate which and whats!

u/VeryRareHuman Jun 03 '25

Tamil or any dravida language do not originate from Sanskrit, so anger is justified. But Kannada evolved from old Tamil. So what's the justification for the righteous anger?

u/Jazzlike_Math_970 Jun 04 '25

Wtf are you into. Old tamil was derived from proto Dravidian language which is extinct. This is the same language from which kannada is also derived from. Tamil and kannada hold a sister like bond coz kannada was born AFTER tamil, not FROM it

u/Background-Roof-6824 Jun 03 '25

The biggest betrayal to tamil was naming old Tamil as proto Dravidian. If you see the words of proto Dravidian they are tamil words. The so called common ancestor was the oldest form of Tamil. I'm really looking forward to seeing inscriptions of the that proto Dravidian. Kannada as it stands today is an independent language. But the research does reveal that it has branched off of old Tamil (aka so-called prD) almost two millennia back and new language got created. So kannada is likely to have branched off of old Tamil and eventually became a language of its own with some of its own vocabulary while still retaining many old Tamil words. Of course sanskrit/prakrit influence was there. Technically tamil didn't give birth to kannada. So it's wrong (to some it maybe offensive) to say that. Kannada's roots had tamil as well as other including probably it's natively formed words. For tamil and tamilnadu, thanks to its geographical location and strong kingdoms (till 13th century AD) there were less invasions and importantly other people migrations compared to Karnataka or Andhra regions. Thus less cultural/linguistic mixes in TN. Kannada itself is a very old language. But old Tamil = Proto Dravidian. Some people have agendas to prove otherwise at all costs which is disheartening.

Thanks KH. You have successfully rekindled the enmity again between the two states.

u/Bubbly-Raccoon3758 Jun 04 '25

labeling everything as tamil by tamil fanatics doesn't make it tamil, the proto dravidan and the tamil you speak today as way too different to be even compared properly. You would probably find more similialry with languages from neighbouring states than with proto dravidan. Not to mention all south indian lanaguges are from proto dravidan, tamilans have just not evolved the root languages as well as the people from other states did making it most similar to it, this gives them the incorrect assumption that they made proto dravidan and is the root of south indian lanagues, the very fact that tamilans wasn't able to evolve the language as much as others show that they weren't the one who originally developed or evolved it.

u/Background-Roof-6824 Jun 05 '25

How do you know? Oldest literature is still tamil. Still intelligible. We use same words. Only the sentence formation changes and evolves as in any language. This is common for any language. In fact, tamil is very intelligBle compared to other ancient language. Clearly you don't have any idea of what you are talking about. How many books you have read on proto Dravidian and linguistic history? Have you seen comparison of proto Dravidian words and other south indian languages? All i see is hate on tamil and prevent tamil getting the recognition and history it deserves. I urge to approach this with open mind and set aside the hatred for tamil. And lastly your last statement is the absolute rubbish. What do you mean by evolve? Evolve as in literature or language? If it's former you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If it's latter, then buddy not evolving in terms of sounds , alphabets shows the antiquity of the language and primitiveness. By primitive I mean old.

Dude you have zero knowledge on what you are talking about. Only hatred for tamil and you are hell bent on proving tamil is not a old language and with baseless points and zero proof.

u/captainmilitia Jun 06 '25

I think it’s important to differentiate between linguistic continuity and linguistic dominance. Tamil definitely has the oldest surviving body of literature among the Dravidian languages, and that’s a huge cultural achievement but that doesn’t automatically make old Tamil synonymous with Proto-Dravidian. That’s a linguistic stretch.

Proto-Dravidian is a reconstructed language, not something that exists in inscriptions or direct texts. It’s a hypothetical common ancestor inferred from similarities across all Dravidian languages, not just Tamil. Many root words reconstructed in Proto-Dravidian also show up in Kannada, Telugu, and even Brahui not because they branched from Tamil, but because they share a deeper common root. That’s how language families work man!

If Tamil appears closer to the reconstructed Proto-Dravidian, it may be due to relatively conservative linguistic evolution, not proof that it is Proto-Dravidian. That doesn’t make Tamil less rich or significant it just places it properly within a wider linguistic context.

Also, Change doesn’t mean loss of value. Kannada and Telugu evolved with heavy influence from Prakrit, Sanskrit, and native innovation this isn’t a failure to preserve roots, it’s part of dynamic linguistic evolution.

So yeah, let’s celebrate Tamil’s antiquity, but let’s not rewrite linguistic history in the process.

u/Doubledoor Jun 03 '25

Kamal needs to shut the fuck up for once in his life. Fucking puludhi will say anything to create controversy during his movie launches and milk it.

u/AncientOnnu Jun 03 '25

u/vidvizharbuk Jun 03 '25

Does any country(ies) claim every day thr neighbouring country language came from theirs? Which is oldest language or religion? One cannot deny all southern (& rest of India) native kingdoms built Hindu temples only.

u/jerCSY Jun 03 '25

But what if Kamal Haasan said that Kannada came from Sanskrit instead, would the reaction be the same as now? 🤣

u/Opening_Hat6086 Jun 03 '25

u/wanderrur Jun 03 '25

a few fringe groups will always take things "out of context" and will get their sentiments hurt for politics and this group is across the spectrum, if you keep validating and apologising to these fringe groups, they will keep coming after you.

i'm sure majority of the Kannada people understand the context and they don't really care as much.

Sanghis will fuel this fire it helps them to switch the language debate from Kannada vs Hindi to Kannada vs Tamil and also it's a Congress govt so it helps their politics to project them as savior.

Question is not about whether Kamal is right or wrong. It is about Kannadigas blackmailing by banning Thug Life. This issue is not something to do with tit for tat. How many rubbish statements we hear from North? Do we ban all Bollywood films?

Hindi is the national language and Sankrit the mother of all languages is something propagated by someone everyday which is factually and constitutionally wrong. Do you see everyone getting riled up for that?

u/thegoodearthquake Jun 04 '25

All this language war is to divide the people. India is growing finally faster compared to before no matter how much people hate the current government. But the opposition and outside forces want to derail that using freebies, caste wars and language divisions (north/south)

u/No_Challenge853 Jun 04 '25

While I completely agree with you. It’s sad to see native people of Karnataka favouring Hindi to Kannada at many instances! They have to fight against the common enemy (Hindi) and not people who speak their sister language (Tamil)

u/slutforbadammilk Jun 04 '25

lol a sanghi’s comment isn’t met with this much protest or scrutiny because freedom of speech isn’t equal. you’re only allowed to speak your mind and have opinions as long as they’re considered valid in the eyes of the oppressor group.

u/arun_xd Jun 04 '25

The reality is not only tamil ancient it exists throughout the continent. For now, tamil nadu is the only state which holds the name of tamilian in future even i don't know tamil nadu will exist because of the Dravidian government. The thing is Kannada is not from tamil then trying to say is to save their language. Even if it's not, it contains the base of tamil. Sanskrit is also another term many languages contain but tamil has the existence to live now . Please don't encourage privatisation and Dravidian strategies because no country thinks a shit but tamilnadu use as the loophole to get votes.

I am 17M , I have not have much knowledge but my words are emotion's Also the one thing periyar guy lived in the state written is tamil can't use for begging like that. Before the world seeks tamil as a diamond but know they see as a one of side southern language people used to speak rather than the language introduced to live beings (may not understandable)

Please use 2026 as a good chance to vote a new people not a Dravidian who use periyar as a kind to appreciate but he is the man writing tamil as shit and make people belive as he correct

u/Current_Education659 Jun 04 '25

Idk about that, Tamil came from Sanskrit's ass is a scientific fact proven by NASA in 10th century itself.

Tamil predates every other Indian language and I am not even a Tamil

u/resurrect_1988 Jun 04 '25

It needs to be seen with the context. Sanghis say Sanskrit is mother of all languages so you better learn Sanskrit. Kamal said you and me are equal because Kannada is born out of Tamil. If he said so you better learn Tamil, then it is wrong. It needs to be debated at the intellectual stage and anyone can argue differently but definitely not picking up a single line and persuading him to apologize. This is how science evolves, one put forth a theory another one take it up discard unwanted and improvise it until it shape into theory of relativity or origin of species. All those things came when churches are powerful enough to steer the state against it. It is ridiculous to let it happen at this time. This country needs more scientific temper.

Tamil is the parent language of all Dravidian languages is truth.

Sanskrit is the parent of all Indian languages including Dravidian languages is propaganda.

If you're offended by first you're an idiot.

If you're not offended by the second, again you're an idiot.

u/HolySanguinary Jun 05 '25

This is just a ploy by Kamal to divert attention during elections. During the previous election Kamal gave a speech that the first terrorists in Independant India was a Hindu in muslims area and now he is creating a controversy by raising language issues. As long as he divides votes Kamal is happy, he does not care if people get injured or killed due to the hatred he is stirring.

u/Former_Reference_919 Jun 05 '25

I agree with what you're trying to say

But saying tamil came from Sanskrit is factually wrong in so many levels

Whereas Kannada did come from tamil . This is not wrong

u/pbshk Jun 05 '25

He didn't say anything wrong, it is just etymology. Please never compare unnatural Sanskrit grooming to Tamil protectionism. People can Sanskrit as dev bhasha, no one ever claimed such sort in Tamil, hell we don't even claim we are superior to Kannada/Malayalam/Telugu or any other language that has Tamil origin.

Kamal just said we are brothers thru language, something to that effect.

u/highlyradioactive Jun 05 '25

Tamil is mother of Kannada, I have said this to many Kannadigas no one’s feeling got affected. Because it is proved, And Sanskrit is sister of Tamil both originated more or less at same time. If Sanskrit is proven to be mother of Tamil, I’ll accept it and not wine about it like senseless idiot

u/livendead Jun 05 '25

Absolutely. Pride can be there but not while trivialising or belittling others and claiming we are “older” and “ancient”. Yes, Tamil is old and thriving still. So what? This false sense of ethnocentric / jingoistic pride is stupid.

u/PrimaryPassenger7248 Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

Previously I thought whatever language you want to speake speak it is your choice, Learn enough language of place if you are living outside in any other state that you can understand and make others understand what you mean

But hell naah these telugu people they went a step ahead and poked there finger in arse, So now I too have hard stance

Sanskrit is father of tamil and telugu and all other mallu pallu languages

u/Available-Home-4598 Jun 05 '25

Let me burn you guys ....You know what every other post in this sub is either sanghis do this or North do that .....but the subs of Northern States doesn't even give a damn to Tamilians . Now you can downvote me 😂

Damn, if anything, this controversy only proved that the self proclaimed Tamil leftists aren't as rational and pragmatic as they claim to be.

A lot of my friends are leftists and the Kamal glaze was Insane.

When the Karnataka High court asked Kamal to apologise and he refused to do it, my friends literally started posting insta stories, "Sorry kekka avaru yenna savarkar nu nenaicheengala da" 🤡

These same chuds would seethe hard if some senior BJP politician like Amit Shah or Subramanian Swami made remarks like how Tamil was born from Sanskrit or Hindi lol.

Like bro Tamil leftists ain't shit. They are as tribalistic as the rightoids. It's just that they have the loudest noise in Tamil cyberspace and have a, "holier-than-thou" attitude.

There was another Tamil leftist influencer who said that Kannadigas should go search for evidence if Kannada was born out of Tamil 🤡🙏🏾

Mf, the onus of proof is always on the one who makes the claim. It's KH who's supposed to show proof instead, the goofy ahh old man went, "we will leave this debate to historians and linguists". The. Why did you have to make such a controversial statement in the first place? 😭🙏🏾Just to stir up confusion and ethnic tensions for the sake of cheap ass marketing for your mid ass film?

As a celebrity, he's supposed to know that his comments have real world impacts. There's no guarantee that a few hooligans who vandalize Tamil owned shops during the peak of Kaveri water dispute wouldn't mind using this as a casus belli to harass Tamils in Karnataka again?

I'm pretty sure if a right wing politician made a sensitive comment along communal lines, which would have potential to create real world impact, leftists would unanimously ask him to apologise.

The more and more I see it, it only becomes obvious that Tamil leftists aren't any better.

Kamal said it for two purposes.

  1. To keep his Political ambition relevant. He is now going to Rajya Sabha by championing one of DMK's causes - language politics.

  2. To get traction for his movie which may otherwise just bomb without publicity. Why? Mani Ratnam lost his shine, Trisha is not the best actress or dancer, STR has his own stupid battles to fight, Kamal in my opinion didn't do any good after Anbe Sivam. With all reputed stars with no talent/skill/interest in films, Kamal (and his studio) needs controversy. Without it he will face huge losses.

Good luck with him. I'm not gonna watch Thug Life.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

You know what the say about opinions.

u/vanitti Jun 03 '25

Cine people look for ways to make their films the talking point. May there there is not enough market in K'nataka for his films and hopes to earn more from TN by backlash

that makes zero sense but ok

u/jxxpm Jun 03 '25

Like those quotes that Kylie Jenner and the like post on Instagram… sounds nice to hear, but when you break it down to its core, there’s nothing there.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

As a Punjabi staying in Bengal, who speaks fluent Bengali. I wish we Indians would stop this stupid language war. All our languages are beautiful, but we can use English to bridge the gap.

u/Vegji Jun 03 '25

Yes both can be wrong. I'm against both. And kamal hassan should apologize. Hes been going around and I also feel there's some very slight propaganda about Tamil leading the Dravidian movement which I find weird. I find it weird we r in some group, I have no clue who Tamilians are as a community that I can just start to call myself Dravidian brothers. We speak Dravidian languages. And I for one speak konkani which is not a Dravidian languages but has heavy kannada influence. Sounds not at all inclusive, cause I do speak kannada(I'm from blr).

I'm against imposition pls make it clear. But kamal hassan should apologize. Let alone apologise, this dude doesn't even want to say he's wrong. Hes sowing the seeds unnecessarily. I also disagree that sanskrit is the mother of all languages. If u want at max u can say there is sanskrit influence, but yeah it's not the mother of father.

It's not about intention. The apology is not about intention it's about the future consequence it can lead to.

u/berrycatd Jun 03 '25

Tamil retains the Tamil identity. Dravida is Tamil.

u/wmwmwm-x Jun 03 '25

He was right. I think it’s high time Kannada people realize where their language is coming from. It’s a derivative of Tamil. Not sure why it’s confusing.

Paythikaringla Ella kannada passunge.

u/murali1003 Jun 03 '25

There is no proof it deviated from Tamil. You can say Malayalam deviated from Tamil and there is no proof for other Dravidian languages.

u/wmwmwm-x Jun 03 '25

Literally most of South Indian languages came out of Tamil. The way I see it is - most of North Indian languages came from Arabic/persian whereas South Indian languages came from Tamil. With the exception of Telugu that got mixed too much with Prakrit.

u/cryogenic-goat Jun 03 '25

The way you see it doesn't mean shit.

There are qualified linguists who have published their peer reviewed research on this. Their consensus is that Kannada was not derived from Tamil and unless you have conclusive evidence to disprove that, stfu.

u/murali1003 Jun 03 '25

If Tamil has earliest written record doesn't mean other south languages came from Tamil. The difference and time-line go beyond it. Linguist  call it proto Dravidian language, which has its origin fro. Iranian farmers. Northern IE languages didn't come from Arabic or Persian.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

North Indian languages didn't come from Arabic/ persian. Wth are you even saying?

u/wmwmwm-x Jun 03 '25

Eh, they sure did. Hear of Prakrit, Farsi, Persian?

Karnataka 1 - Tamilnadu 0 🤣🤣🤣

u/tylerdurden_3040 Jun 03 '25

This is not a war between two states, it is just a man and his ego

u/Possible-Hour-5191 Jun 03 '25

Kannadigas have definitely scored 1 over dravidas

u/tylerdurden_3040 Jun 03 '25

Not a big fan of these pro Kannada activists - they are doing more harm than good. But they have all the rights to get pissed off in this case.

u/Possible-Hour-5191 Jun 03 '25

So you are a big fan of Tamil activists then... 🤣🤣🤣

u/your-Fun-Pass Jun 03 '25

It's amusing how we get offended by each and everything. Shows how unproductive we all are.

KH is no one other than an actor. His words don't mean anything yet from people to courts getting rattled.

u/coldmiddlefinger Jun 03 '25

Dai mayiru. Tamil is the mother of all South Indian languages. We Tamils don’t give a fuck if their ass burns for saying the truth.

u/Academic-Ad5737 Jun 03 '25

There's is a possibility that Proto Tamil Kannada is just an older version of Old Tamil. Kamal could be right. More research is required. Also why are Kannadigas hiding Halegannada. Worried that the striking similarities will show?

u/Thunk_Truck Jun 03 '25

If more research is required, do it and then speak, until then don't endorse these non sensical statements uttered to divert public attention from issues like ED raids on binomis

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

there is no such research. it is evident from your comment that you are simply bullshitting without having any clue about linguistics. if 'proto tamil kannada' is simply old tamil, than it is by definition NOT old tamil. proto tamil kannada, by definition, is the ancestor of tamil and kannada. hence it cannot be tamil. that is basic, basic, linguistics that a 5th grader could understand.

u/TresLeche789 Jun 03 '25

Thank you. Feels good to see some common sense here.

u/cryogenic-goat Jun 03 '25

There's is a possibility that Proto Tamil Kannada is just an older version of Old Tamil

Do you seriously think linguists haven't accounted for that possibility?

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

Linguistics has Proto Tamil Malayalam as a classification but we all know there was only Tamil and Mlayalam branched off from it similarly there is a possibility that proto Tamil kannada is just older version of Tamil.

u/Thunk_Truck Jun 03 '25

Malayalam claim is valid as Chera Nadu was part of Tamilakam and it has valid backing and there are historical accounts of how Malayalam was formed by Nambhoodaris

No such claim is there for Kannada or Telugu, infact it can very well be vice versa, Kannadigas can simply claim they migrated to South to Tamilakam and Tamil is a older version of kannada

And Kingdoms have always migrated from North to TN, be it the Velirs of Sangam Age who came from Dwaraka, Ganga Dynasty of Karnataka who were the Kalapirar, Vijayanagar kingdoms and many more

u/cryogenic-goat Jun 03 '25

Just because "we all know" something doesn't mean it's a fact. Not sure what your point is.

Linguists have classified it that way for a reason.

u/RoundThought3878 Jun 03 '25

In my opinion, intentions with which that statement was said needs to be scrutinised to determine if it was meant as an insult or just an ignorant mistake made while trying to foster kinship.

Actors are no linguists, no need to take their words as facts. But making an issue out of a well intended statement and trying to frame is as disrespect and then demanding an apology is all way out of line.

"mother language of all languages"

I'm sorry that our education system let you down. As someone who studied about Lemuria kandam in school and actually believed it, I empathize with you and don't even blame you at this point. But I hope you learn to think critically

Sanskrit is not the mother of any Indian language. Even Hindi didn’t come from Sanskrit. Check the tree in this wikipedia page.

Sanghis get butt hurt because of psychological problems. You cannot change the facts to please them.

Hindi very much belongs to same Lang family of Sanskrit offshoots. (Even by your wiki page too)

u/Kambar Jun 04 '25

The screenshot you put is correct. Because it refers to Indo Aryan which is great great grand mother of Sanskrit.

Dei, unakku elutha padikla theriyuma?

u/Bubbly-Raccoon3758 Jun 04 '25

Kamal hassan was worse because Sanskrit was much much more culturally and linguistically influential than tamil when you look at the scale of how much it influenced in south asian subcontinent and outside it.
