Duolingo Style AI Tabla App (Update)

Upvotes

Hey All,

We appreciate the support for our Idea. We are currently less than 10 days away from launch (Expected to be September 15th, 2026). Here is an Interest form that you can fill out to claim early registration.

Info about the App:
The app is designed to help younger students practice, and has curriculum curated by Tabla professionals, and a Duolingo Style learning path.
Moreover, the app's main attraction is an AI accuracy checker, which I can explain in the comments below.

This is within the MyTablaTeacher app, So let me make a few things clear:

This app is not a substitute for live Tabla teachers. The AI feedback will never match a real Tabla teacher. The app is meant to be an add on for teachers, so they can encourage practice for their students. The app also contains a Teacher studio where they can post curriculum easily for larger classes.

Looking for guidance regarding purchase

Upvotes

I’ve been trying to buy a tabla set for a while now with very little success. I bought a set off eBay and couldn’t get the na stroke to give me any sound whatsoever. It just seemed dead. Today I tried another Facebook marketplace seller and had the same result. On the bass tabla I’m able to get some resonance, but on the treble tabla on the na stroke I just can’t get any sound. I’m not using the traditional dayan bayan terminology because I’m left-handed. I’m a percussion player and I play drums dhol and congas so I think I know what I’m doing. I took tabla lessons at school when I was a kid. There’s a borderline possibility that there’s something wrong with my technique. But I’d like to be able to try a tabla before buying it because if I can’t get any sound out of it, it’s just going to be a decoration in my house. I’m looking for guidance from this group. Also, I’m in the Boston area so if there’s a place where I can try out a set before buying, ideally under someone’s guidance, that would be ideal. I was thinking of going to a gurdwara and talking to a ragi to try out their set, but that’s going to be a last resort if nothing else pans out. Thanks.

Bayan Question/Modulation

was wondering if my bayan sounds proper. I feel like I can bend properly but anytime I do a ghisa the louder noise is my palm sliding versus the actual modulation of the beat.

I have a copper dagga around 4kg & I use talc powder pretty regularly. I’ve also tried orienting the drum at different angles so wrist is closer to siyahi but still deal w the same problem

Any tips?

Online and Offline Tabla Classes at Varanasi!

Upvotes

Hello! I’m Mohit Bhaduri, a Tabla artist and teacher from Varanasi, India.

I am the disciple of Prof Pravin Uddhav Ji ( Disciple of Padmashri Suresh Talwalkar Ji) and Pt. Bholanath Mishra Ji (Disciple of Padmabhushan Samta Prasad Ji)

I’m associated with Aradhana School of Performing Arts, where we offer personalised online classes in Indian Classical Music. Our Tabla training is rooted in the Banaras Gharana, while we also introduce students to the distinctive styles and compositions of five other major Tabla Gharanas.

The classes are suitable for both beginners and serious learners, with a focus on developing proper technique, rhythm, repertoire, and a deeper understanding of the tradition—not simply learning compositions by imitation.

We offer one-to-one online Tabla lessons making traditional Indian classical music training accessible to students internationally.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn Tabla or explore Indian classical rhythm under systematic guidance, I’d be happy to speak with you and understand your musical interests and goals. You’re also welcome to ask me anything about the classes before deciding.

I am attaching our website and youtube channel for you to look 😊

How do you all maintain your tabla notes? Looking for some suggestions.

Upvotes

My boys, who are 10 and 12 years old, recently started learning tabla. They are the first ones in our family to learn it, so we are completely new to this.

They get handwritten notes from their teacher and copy them into a notebook. Unfortunately, the notebook is now falling apart, and I’m having a hard time figuring out the best way to preserve and organize all of their notes.

I asked my boys to organize the material themselves, and they have currently grouped it into categories such as Laggis, Teentaal, Deepchandi, and Kharwa. However, I really don’t understand tabla well enough to know whether these are the right categories or how the material should be organized.

I’m looking for suggestions from other tabla students, parents, or teachers:

  • What is the best way to organize and preserve handwritten tabla notes?
  • Should we use separate notebooks for different taals or types of exercises?
  • How should categories such as Laggis, Teentaal, Deepchandi, and Kharwa be organized?
  • Would a binder with dividers be better than a notebook?
  • Is there a good system for keeping track of what they have learned and what they are currently practicing?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have no background in tabla, so I’m looking for a simple system that two 10-year-olds can actually maintain themselves.

Delhi — looking for a tabla player to join our band as a fourth member

We're three right now: vocals/rap, guitar, bass. We write original Hindi rapcore — rap vocals over heavy guitar, closer to rock than to hip-hop.

We're not looking for tabla laid on top of finished songs. We want it as a fourth voice, in the room while we're writing, and we're curious what happens when it goes through pedals and effects instead of staying clean and classical.

We've got rough recordings. They're not public yet — DM me and I'll send them over, and you can tell me straight if it's your thing.

Duolingo Style Tabla App

Upvotes

Quick question for the community, would people be interested in an app that has a duolingo structure for practice? The app is designed to help younger students practice, and has curriculum curated by Tabla professionals.
Moreover, the app will have an AI accuracy checker, which I can explain in the comments below.

This is within the MyTablaTeacher app, and Reddit keeps taking down these posts. So let me make a few things clear:

This app is not a substitute for live Tabla teachers. The AI feedback will never match a real Tabla teacher. The app is meant to be an add on for teachers, so they can encourage practice for their students. The app also contains a Teacher studio where they can post curriculum easily for larger classes.

Please send dms for further questions. Updates will come from social platforms like reddit, as well as our instagram, which is MyTablaTeacher.

What is the correct method for Riyaz?

Upvotes

I am 56yrs old male and started learning tabla when I was 45 yrs old. I learned it for 7 yrs. I passed 5 exams conducted by Gandharva Mahavidyalaya with distinction. So I consider myself as a mid tier tabla player amongst the amateurs.
I learned it online from the scratch. I spend 1 hr daily for Riyaz. But I am still unhappy about the speed and clarity. I was not told how to Riyaz correctly.
After spending few years I came to know that It should be done at a slow tempo. But I am not yet clear about at how much speed I should start , for how much time should I continue with the same speed? How much and when to increase the speed etc. can anyone shed the light on the correct method of the Riyaz?

Dayan Identification/ head replacement tips

Upvotes

Hello! Recieved this rather unplayable dayan from a friend, the head (wood diameter) is approximately 13.4 cm, overall about 22cm tall, and appears to be made of sheesham.

The gattas have a pronounced red stripe on them, and I hope that can help someone identify or give some info on an origin perhaps!

I plan to learn re-heading on this drum so I am more comfortable when I do my own heads in the future, tips for this or good places to source from would be appreciated as well! Thank you for reading 🙂
